SPRUCE UP YOUR YARD FOR FALL
C
hunky sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes and multi-coloured leaves — some things are simply quintessentially fall. Others like giving your home an outdoor face-lift may not necessarily be top of mind, but rich fall colours open up a realm of possibilities for creative yard decorations. Not just for the summer and holiday seasons, outdoor décor help create a warm and welcoming exterior. Drawing inspiration from the season is the best place to start. A simple harvest wreath made from leaves, berries and twigs uses the gorgeous reds, oranges and browns of autumn. Accent it with a burlap bow for arustic touch. If you want to add some farmhouse charm, repurpose household items to breathe new life into them. The opportunities are
endless — an old door that used to have windows on it is the perfect way to display fall blooms in hanging flower pots. A chair missing its seat can act as a rustic flower pot stand. An old set of shelves is ideal for showing off vintage watering cans. And if you don't have these hanging around, you can always pop by a local used furniture outlet, like Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which has been raising funds to invest in local communities for 25 years. For added pops of colour, place pots of burgundy chrysanthemums, purple asters or ornamental cabbage along your walkway. Flowers always freshen things up, especially when the temperature starts to drop. Create a country aesthetic by placing decorative gourds and pumpkins in between the flowers. These will transition well into
late autumn, and you can even repurpose the pumpkin for carving a jack-o-lantern on Halloween. www.newscanada.ca

MAKE GORDON RAMSAY'S GARDEN FRESH SALAD TONIGHT
A
s we make the most of these last lazy summer days, salad remains a refreshing and healthy meal choice. Chef Gordon Ramsay shares his recipe for a beautiful salad made using the Philips Airfryer. If you can't find cauliflower in all three colours, simply use a single one — the results will be less colourful but just as delicious.
Air-Fried Vegetable Salad with Chimichurri Vinaigrette Ingredients: • 1/2 head white cauliflower, cut into small bite-size florets • 1/2 head yellow cauliflower, cut into small bite-size florets • 1/2 head purple cauliflower, cut into small bite-size florets • 3 small red beets, peeled and cut into 1/4 inch (6 mm) wedges • Extra virgin olive oil for drizzling • 1 head frisée, torn into bite-size pieces • 2 cups (4 oz/125 g) baby arugula • 6 breakfast radishes, thinly sliced • 1 small bunch mint, thinly slivered
For the vinaigrette: • 1 bunch fresh cilantro • 1 bunch fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1/2 bunch fresh chives • 1 garlic clove • 1 shallot, chopped • 1/4 cup (2 fl. oz/60 ml) red wine vinegar • Juice of 1 lemon, plus more as needed • Pinch of red pepper flakes • 1/2 cup (4 fl. oz/125 ml) extra virgin olive oil • Salt and freshly ground pepper 1. Preheat the Philips Airfryer to 360°F (182°C). Place the cauliflower florets in three separate bowls, one for each colour. Put the beets in a separate bowl. Season the cauliflower and beets with salt and pepper and drizzle all the vegetables lightly with olive oil. Toss to coat.
2. Arrange the white cauliflower in a single layer in the fry basket and insert into the Airfryer. Cook for 8 minutes, stirring the cauliflower once halfway through. Transfer to a baking sheet to let cool. Repeat with yellow and purple cauliflower. 3. Arrange the beets in a single layer in the fry basket and insert into the air fryer. Cook for 12 to 14 minutes until fork-tender, turning once halfway through. Transfer to a baking sheet to let cool. 4

4. Coarsely chop the cilantro, parsley, and chives and place in a blender. Add the garlic, shallot, vinegar, lemon juice, and red pepper flakes. Turn the blender on high speed and, with the motor running, slowly add the olive oil. Purée until the mixture is smooth and emulsified. Season to taste with salt and pepper and add more lemon juice if desired. 5. To assemble the salad, in a large serving bowl toss together the cauliflower and beets. Add the vinaigrette to taste and toss to coat the vegetables. Add the frisée and arugula,
drizzle with a little more dressing and toss again to coat. Garnish with the radishes and mint and serve immediately. Tip: You won't need all of the dressing, but leftovers will keep in the refrigerator for a few days. Use it to dress your favourite salad or as a dip for crudités. TEACH YOUR KIDS VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS WITH CHORES The “chore gap” that sees children doing fewer household chores than their parents may be negatively affecting their social development, according to Alyson Schafer, therapist and parenting expert. She points to a recent survey conducted by Whirlpool Canada where 59 per cent of adults said children today spend less time doing chores than they did when they were kids as evidence of this trend. But Schafer believes that household tasks teach youngsters valuable life skills. “These contributions make children feel valued and help them build skills for when they set up their own home,” she explains. Experts suggest that if parents assign kids age-appropriate tasks early, helping out becomes a normal part of family life. Because older children tend to do better with chores that aren't time-sensitive, they can do the dusting or vacuuming rather than something
like setting the table. Children like to have some sense of control, so Schafer suggests letting kids pick from a list of jobs. Parents can also let a child's natural interest guide which tasks they take on; the budding chef, for example, can help with dinner and meal prep. While a little elbow grease is good for kids, new technologies make it easier than ever for them to help. For example, the Load & Go bulk dispenser on some Whirlpool washing machines holds detergent for multiple loads and automatically dispenses the correct amount of detergent based on the load and cycle. Parents don't have to worry about spills and messes — just stuff those clothes in and hit a button, something any kid can manage. So next time you're inclined to let your children skip chores, remember that insisting the work get done can be another way of showing them how much you care.

IN THE MARKET FOR A CONDO? HERE'S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
A
mazing amenities, security, and convenience — all are great reasons for choosing a condo. But what many people don't know is that just as condos have risen in popularity and price, so have the warranty protections for buyers. In fact, condo buyers are amongst the best protected home buyers in the province. Here are five things you should know about your rights and protections as a new condo buyer. Builders must be qualified Before a new residential condominium can break ground, the developer is subject to strict registration requirements from Tarion, the administrator of Ontario's new home warranty program. In addition to ensuring financial and technical competence, staff meet with builders before registration is granted to ensure they have an experienced team in place, including architects, engineers, and lawyers with previous condo building experience. Deposits are kept in trust and delays are compensated Once the builder is registered, the sales centre goes up and buyers can put down deposits. If the project fails to go through, deposits are protected by trust requirements under the Condominium Act. As an additional measure of protection, Tarion covers deposits for up to $20,000 per unit. Buyers are also entitled to compensation if delivery of their unit is delayed beyond what is specified in the purchase agreement or if the date has not been properly extended.
You can change your mind There is a 10-day cooling off period once you sign an Agreement of Purchase and Sale. This provides buyers with an opportunity to cancel the contract and receive a deposit refund. The construction process is inspected During construction, two kinds of inspections occur. City building inspectors make sure condominiums are up to code at various stages, and builders are required to engage an independent professional such as an architect or engineer to provide ongoing reporting at certain stages of construction. This process outlines what needs to be inspected, who can conduct the inspections, and how often reports must be completed.
Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® reported 8,965 condo apartment sales between the beginning of April and end of June. This result represented an increase of 17.4 per cent in comparison to the same period in 2015. The average selling price of a condominium apartment in Q2 2016 was $415,326 – up 7.1 per cent compared to Q2 2015. The MLS® Home Price Index apartment benchmark price was up by a similar 7.9 per cent at the end of June.
New condos come with a warranty Once you take possession, there's a warranty on your unit and a separate warranty for common elements. Together, these warranties provide coverage for a wide range of issues, including unauthorized substitutions, issues with water penetration, violations of the Ontario Building Code, major structural defects, and defects to the electrical, heating, and plumbing systems. 4 TIPS FOR INCREASING THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME
Y
ou know your home is an investment and with the recent rise in property values you may be considering selling in the foreseeable future. Professional stagers are experts at making changes that will appeal to the most general home buyer. But you don't need a pro to achieve this effect in your own home.
Focus on the kitchen More than any other item in your kitchen, cabinets take up the most real estate as they are the largest visual feature. But you don't always need to replace them —simply paint or re-stain the door and drawer fronts. And don't forget about hardware as this simple switch can change your look and pull together the

The power of paint No other home improvement project delivers a higher return on investment than a fresh coat of paint in the perfect colour. Clean and brighter colours inside will give your home a spacious, airy feel while a neutral exterior increases curb appeal. Consider Para Paint's Princess Cut PF 57 or Jo Jo Whitewash PF 17 for indoors; and Humberstone PF 74 for exteriors, a modern option for your trim, garage door or front door.
Cut the clutter Your goal should be to make your home as clean and airy as possible. Remove personal elements and tidy desks and shelves to exude an easy, elegant feel. To truly pull in the highest bids you'll want to make visitors feel as if they can live there and move in right away.

ONE-PAN PASTA AND OTHER COOKING Whether you know your way around the kitchen like a chef or are still perfecting toast, we all face our share of culinary conundrums. Here's a roundup of solutions to some common kitchen calamities: Does your water boil over? Place a spoon across the top of the pot to keep it from boiling over. Is your sauce lacking? Add a pat of butter to make any sauce more decadent. Did you have a plating disaster? Serve your pasta family-style in one big platter and let guests serve themselves. Do you have a disdain for doing the dishes? Try a pasta specifically made for
one-pan cooking like Barilla Pronto. Ready in 10 minutes, it has a perfect al dente texture and leaves fewer dishes to clean. Find more simple and delicious one-pan recipes at www.barilla.ca.

A FESTIVAL FOR DOGS by Veronika Kabarguina photography by Jane Kabarguina

hen it comes to summer festivals the GTA has it all. And now that applies to dogs too! This year, the Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary, located on 19th Sideroad between Dufferin and Old Bathurst, dedicated August 20-21 to our dogs. This was the very first Dog Tales

Festival and dog owners drove up to three hours (for their dogs) to experience the fun. Promises of the festival included live music, surprises, and over 90 related vendors. Boy were those promises delivered. Enter Ray. The guard dog of Hidden Forest Yoga Studio. Arguably the most beautiful dog at the festival. As we walked our shy, giant King Sheppard up the hill and across Dufferin, cars were parked one after the other along 19th Sideroad. We could hear live music, see a Ferris wheel, and smell freshly made kettle corn, and we hadn’t even made it to the front gate yet. Once inside, we encountered every type of dog you could fathom. The real surprise hit us when we entered
the Entertainment Tent. It was an unexpected walk into a fairy tale story. Who knew you could have a floor of hay and chandeliers in the same room and make it look so good? Surprise, surprise is right Dog Tales. More entertainment could be found on the festival grounds where Woof Jocks Stunt Dogs performed and vendors offered up samples of dog treats, showcased their dog shampoos and displayed their dazzling dog collars. Even though there had been show dogs at the event, I counted that our Ray had been called beautiful more than thirty times. I was afraid that we would bring back a cult following with us. Ray certainly had become the ladies’ man he always dreamed of being, thanks to Dog Tales. With this, we didn’t think the day would get any more exciting, but on our way back to the car, we encountered two Chihuahuas who were dressed up and ready to go. Apparently they left a third at home and collectively they are known as The Chihuahua Powers (with over 600 likes on Facebook). I hope they were ready to walk into the biggest festival of their lives. Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary is open Sundays 11-5.
