I

f you’re going to have a hand in your landscaping, whether it be planting your own gardens, hedges, trees or tackling your own deck, patio or water feature. Having a plan on paper, a design or list of what needs to be done and in what order is the best way to troubleshoot problems ahead of time. Potential problems like making sure a particularly vital sequence of actions are done in order, no tasks get forgotten and everything gets budgeted for. On large complex landscaping projects, working with a Professional contractor is a great way to go, they should always have a Designer to help put your thoughts and wants into a comprehensive plan. Creating the landscape drawings is how you can see into the future to the finished landscape, it will allow you to cost things

out accurately within your budget and develop a schedule (work back plan) to implement. There is an often overlooked benefit of having a design or plan for smaller landscape jobs, this is the most frequent mistake most people and a lot of specialised landscaping pros make. Every Professional shows up to your home and sees the potential of their specific application. For example, swimming pool company “X” sees how best to get the biggest pool the easiest way into your backyard. Good General Contractors and Landscape Designers have the knowledge to guide and steer hardscape and softscape selections, which Professionals to get and even where to buy materials for your DIY pieces. I have designed landscapes and supplied material direct from professional/industry wholesalers for clients on a tight budget who then install everything themselves.

Before you meet with a General Contractor or Designer to start your project..

BRAINSTORM IDEAS. You should include a list of “must-haves” as well your dreams. The “if money and time were no object” what would you want stuff? Look through magazines and online resources; there are many places to go online for great photos and ideas. You can then narrow down what kind of features and gardens

would you want to have? Notice what kinds of design themes you are attracted to, and why (i.e.

If you’re tech savvy you can use free software like Google SketchUp, or for a more old school approach use graph paper. Use the graph lines to approximate sizes and distances accurately so your drawing is more or less accurate to real life.

DECIDE ON YOUR SCHEDULE. There are some elements that need to be done first and some that make sense to be done in a particular order. If you're not sure, this is where a Pro can help with an inexpensive consult. If you’re working with a designer, they will be able to create a schedule for you. This is particularly important for larger projects that will be installed over more than a season. You may decide to plant gardens with a small patio and follow up with a pergola or other larger features in following years. Having a plan gives you specific goals and even timelines to follow. It also helps you budget accordingly and if you’re relying on professionals to do some of the work, there is clear communication on what is expected from them. This is invaluable if you’re getting

quotes from a few different contractors, if they all see the same plan, they will be quoting the same scope of work.

DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET. You as the Home Owner and project manager need to determine what overall budget you can afford and feel comfortable spending. Call around for quotes and put all the feedback into a spreadsheet so it’s in one place, easy to manage and prices are easy to compare. When contractors show up to quote or proceed with work, make sure you have agreements in place and preferably a signed contract with the scope of work clearly identified. Never pay the full amount upfront, but it’s not unusual for down payments and deposits up to 50%. As part of your contract include a payment schedule, depending on the scope of work you may need to put a deposit and pay several times throughout as work progresses, just make sure you holdback 25-30% until the work is completed to your satisfaction. This doesn’t apply to material suppliers who get paid upfront before or upon delivery. Always try to minimize risk and protect yourself, with that said, if you’re working with Professionals nothing is worse for Business Owners than having clients that makes excuses to not pay on time or with less than the agreed amount.

2. Stir unsalted butter, creamed honey and packed brown sugar in a large saucepan set over medium-high. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in oats, puffed-rice cereal, chopped pretzels and flax seeds until combined.

3. Scrape into a greased 8” x 8” baking dish.

Smooth top, then sprinkle with chocolate chips. Refrigerate until firm, about 30 min.

Cut into bars. Let stand at room temperature 5 minutes before serving.

DECLUTTER THE GARAGE IN FIVE EASY STEPS

(NC) After living in a home for a number of years, chances are your garage has accumulated some clutter. Perhaps you want to organize things but don’t know where to start.

2. Designate space on the driveway or within the garage itself for four categories: Items you will donate; those you will sell; treasures to keep; and, items you will toss.

“A home’s garage is a key selling feature, so there’s good reason to keep it functional and appealing,” says Alan Stewart, broker-manager with Royal LePage Sussex in Vancouver. “Although clearing it out can seem daunting, with the right approach you’ll accomplish tremendous change within a short period of time.”

3. Methodically decide what to keep. Consider when you last used the item and the likelihood that you will need it later. For any broken things, ask what the chances are of getting around to fixing it. Lastly, consider if the cost of replacing an item would be greater than the value of the space it will occupy if kept.

Follow these five steps to a clutter-free garage: 1. Set aside a time to tackle the job and be sure to enlist some help. Many hands make light work, as the adage goes. And, if everyone is on board at a designated time, you have a starting point for your much-needed garage cleanup.

4. Dispose of items and hazardous materials.

Ask neighbours or friends if they have use for materials you intend to toss. Donate items that are in good repair to charity. Lastly, check with your municipality for solid-and hazardous-waste disposal programs.

5. Temporary storage. If you have exciting new plans for your garage space, you may need to create temporary storage for those items you choose to keep. Consider moving items into the space usually occupied by the car, or perhaps some items can be temporarily moved indoors. Renting a driveway storage container is another option and may buy you the time you need to create your dream garage.

(NC) It may not come as a surprise that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to helping keep your heart healthy.

However, what many Canadians may not know is that there are simple and fun ways to help improve heart health. In celebration of World Heart Day on Tuesday, September 29th, registered dietitian Gina Sunderland shares some tips to help kick-start a healthy lifestyle: Get active: The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends that adults should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in sessions of 10 minutes or more.

Staying active can help reduce your risk of heart disease, as well as improve mental health and wellbeing by reducing stress.

Set milestones: Set short-term milestones to help achieve long-team goals, for example running a kilometre without stopping, or doing 10 sit-ups. Once you reach your goal, celebrate and then set another. Before you know it, you’ll be entering that road race or doing more crunches than you thought possible.

Eat a green salad everyday: Mix and match ingredients you have available for your salad.

Try adding leftover grilled chicken, cherry tomatoes, roasted red peppers, toasted nuts, or even a can of beans (drained and rinsed first).

Shake the salt: By eating less salt, you can help reduce blood pressure, and therefore the risk of heart disease and stroke. Help control your salt intake by cooking from scratch at home.

Make substitutions in your daily diet: Heart-healthy eating at home can start with making simple substitutions and additions to the meals your family already loves to eat. For example, cooking and baking with a soft, non-hydrogenated margarine, like Becel margarine, is a great option when it comes to eating with your heart in mind. In fact, soft, non-hydrogenated margarine has 80 per cent less saturated fat than butter and can be substituted on a 1:1 ratio for butter in any recipe.

Conceal wall stains with primer Have your kids made artwork of your walls, or has your leaky roof caused a water-damaged mess? Tough wall stains like these can be hard to get rid of, but are easily sealed by applying a high-quality, stain-blocking primer. To cleanse and polish your fridge, begin by emptying the contents of your fridge and throwing out, recycling or composting any food that is expired or beginning to smell.

Next, pull out any removable drawers or shelving and place them in the sink. Using a damp, soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge, wipe down these pieces, the interior of your fridge and the door

with a multi-purpose cleaner. Or, mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one quart of hot water for a natural soap alternative.

Don’t forget the seams of the shelves and rubber door seal.

If your fridge requires an extra-deep cleaning, unplug it while you work to avoid wasting energy. Before putting all of your food back into the fridge, wipe down the exterior of each jar or container with a damp cloth. Repeat this process every two or three months for the best results.

Make grout lines shine Tile surfaces are prone to dirt and debris, especially in bathrooms or high-traffic areas. To keep tile looking fresh and new, grab an old toothbrush or electric toothbrush for a deeper scrub.

Before you start, wash the surface with water then mix two parts baking soda with one part water. Scrub the resulting paste into the cracks and crevices, then douse with water again. If the grout lines are stained, spray a mixture of equal parts vinegar

and warm water onto the area and brush. After a final rinse, the grime will be gone.

Prevent a moldy washing machine If you own a front-loading washing machine, you’ve probably noticed the unpleasant smell that can linger after completing a load of laundry. Despite being more energy-efficient, these machines have a tendency to hold odors and harbor mold. To clean and prevent grimy buildup, try this: instead of detergent, cycle two cups of vinegar and a quarter-cup of baking soda on a hot setting. When it’s done, use a clean sponge to scrub down the inside. Finally, rinse with a plain-water cycle, and you’ll see (and smell) the results.
