5 facts every parent needs to know ahead of marijuana legalization With the federal government intending to legalize cannabis in Canada soon, many parents are wondering what this means for kids, especially for their teens. If you're worried about the coming changes or simply want to start a conversation with your child about marijuana, here are five facts to know and share. Legal weed is only for adults Access will be restricted to anyone under the age of 18. This means no one can sell or provide cannabis to youth.

Drug impaired driving is illegal Driving under the influence of any drug, including marijuana, is illegal and dangerous. But a whopping 24 per cent of young adults believe it's safe to drive a vehicle only a couple of hours or less after using marijuana. This isn't true, and neither is the myth that driving after using cannabis is safer than drunk driving.

— it only worsens driving performance. Many car crashes involving teenagers are caused by inexperience and poor judgment. When these factors are combined with alcohol, cannabis or other drugs, the results can be tragic.
Kids shouldn't accept rides from friends who are high According to the most recent Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey, 15 percent of students in grades seven to 12 reported being a passenger in a motor vehicle driven by someone who had used cannabis in the previous two hours. COZY UP TO FALL WITH FLAVOURFUL COMFORT FOODS It's easy to see why so many top chefs prefer cooking with natural gas. Stoves and grills powered by natural gas allow you to cook with more even, direct and precise heat. Here's a delicious recipe for a kofta, a tasty Middle Eastern dish, simliar to meatloaf or a meatball, from renowned chef Rob Rainford.
Beef and Veal Kofta Ingredients: • 3/4 lb (375 g) ground beef • 1/4 lb (125 g) ground veal • 1 large onion, finely grated • 1/4 cup (60 mL) finely chopped fresh parsley • 1 egg • 1 tbsp (15 mL) extra virgin olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, finely grated • 1 tbsp (15 mL) ground allspice • 1 1/2 tsp (7.5 mL) kosher salt • 2 tsp (10 mL) freshly cracked black pepper • Canola oil for greasing Directions: 1. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl until well combined. 2. Place mixture in a non-reactive bowl
and refrigerate for 24 hours. 3. Take mixture out of the bag and form into eight even-sized portions shaped like mini footballs. Run a skewer widthwise through each kofta. 4. Preheat your natural gas grill to medium-high. Oil the grate with canola oil. 5. Place koftas on the hot grill. Make sure to sear them well before you try to turn them and turn carefully or they will break apart. 6. Grill until a meat thermometer registers an internal temperature of 150 to 160°F (65 to 71°C). 7. Remove from skewers and serve in pita bread Find more delicious recipes online at enbridgegas.com/cookingwithgas. www.newscanada.ca

Selecting the right countertop for your home
When replacing your countertop, you need to consider both your individual style and your budget before choosing a surface. To help you with your project, Rose DiFonzo, kitchen and installs expert at The Home Depot shares a few helpful insights.
DID YOU KNOW: Building large appliances, such as a stove or dishwasher, into your kitchen island can create a bulky look and interfere with your daily foot traffic. The 3 most used areas of your kitchen (fridge, stove, and sink) should form a triangle – this is referred to as the work triangle. The most efficient work triangles do not have regular traffic flow going through them. If the traffic flow of your kitchen goes through your work triangle, consider re-designing your kitchen for a more efficient space.

Lasting durability If your last countertop took a beating and you are not looking to make the same mistakes, invest in Silestone, a combination of natural quartz, raw minerals and resin. This extraordinarily resilient, non-porous work surface is completely maintenance-free, and holds up against staining, scratching and scorching and requires no sealing or polishing. Classic elegance For centuries, granite has been the material of choice for builders and sculptors alike. This stone comes in a wide range of natural colours and is resistant to heat, scratches and stains. Its rich veining and unique specks mean that each countertop features its own one-of-a-kind pattern, making it no surprise why many think granite is the perfect kitchen countertop material. Versatile design For the aspiring interior designer, Corian countertops offer homeowners the option to use in both horizontal and vertical applications. The sky's the limit, allowing you to cut, mould, rout or carve to suit all your design
needs. With an expansive selection of colours, this is also stain-resistant surface. Greener footprint If you prefer eco-friendly alternatives when shopping, look no further than ECO. It's an original product manufactured from 75 per cent recycled materials such as mirror, glass and porcelain — even 94 per cent of the water used in its manufacturing process is re-used. Embrace this scratch-resistant, easy-to-maintain surface while reducing landfill waste. Lasting performance For the chef on the move, your work surface needs to be virtually indestructible. Consider Dekton countertops, which are created by simulating the metamorphic change that natural stone undergoes when subjected to high temperatures and pressure over thousands of years. As a result, this sophisticated blend of the raw materials holds up under extreme temperatures and refuses to scorch or crack. Budget conscious If you are looking for a cost-effective way to give your kitchen an update, laminate countertops are the material for you. With the widest selection offered, you can choose from a myriad of colours, patterns, textures and finishes, making this the perfect option to satisfy all kitchen styles. Laminate countertops also offer a DIY option, so you can save money on installation. www.newscanada.ca
3 WAYS TO EARN VOLUNTEER HOURS FOR HIGH SCHOOL Did you know that every Ontario student in secondary school must complete at least 40 hours of community service to graduate? Many other provinces have similar stipulations. Help your child start off this school year right by getting ahead of their community service requirements with these three rewarding ways to volunteer.
Become a literacy tutor If your child excels in their English and language courses, check out some afterschool programs offering ESL courses. They may be eligible to help some younger children with their reading and writing skills. Work at a soup kitchen Many churches and community centres run soup kitchens and drop-in meal programs. Your child will get a chance to interact and engage with a variety of people with unique perspectives and life experiences.
with a message that interests them and see if there are any openings for students. If human and women's rights are important concerns, check out Toronto-based charity Beautiful World Canada. COOK WITH SEASONAL PRODUCE THIS FALL HARVEST When food is in season the colours are brighter, the textures are richer and the taste is a lot better. But there are a bunch of other benefits to eating in season that you might not realize. Since food is easier to grow when it's in season, those cost-savings are passed down to consumers. Produce picked and eaten at its peak generally has more nutrients, vitamins and minerals. You'll also be supporting local farmers and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, as food grown locally doesn't have to travel as far. When cooking your local produce, keep in mind that you need to consume some fat in order to take advantage of fat-soluble micronutrients that exist in the diet. Soft, non-hydrogenated margarine like Becel with Avocado Oil, provides a plant-based source of good omega-3 polyunsaturated fat. It is made with the goodness of avocado and balanced with the great taste of margarine. Try this simple recipe and see how easy it is to pack your diet with local food.
Lemon-Herb Grilled Tofu and Vegetable Kabobs Ingredients • 1/4 cup (60mL) Becel with Avocado Oil margarine, melted • 2 tbsp (15mL) lemon juice • 2 tsp (5mL) chopped fresh rosemary leaves • 1 large clove (15mL) garlic, finely chopped • 1 tsp (2 mL) lemon peel, finely grated • 1/2 tsp (1 mL) salt • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) ground black pepper • 1 package (350 g) extra-firm tofu, drained, patted dry and cut into 16 chunks • 1 large red, green or yellow bell pepper, cut into 12 chunks • 12 small cremini mushrooms, trimmed • 1 medium zucchini, cut into 12 rounds • 12 pieces sweet onion (about 1/4 medium onion) Directions 1. Combine margarine, lemon juice, rosemary, garlic, lemon peel, salt and pepper in large bowl. Add tofu and vegetables and toss to coat. Cover and marinate in refrigerator for at least one hour. 2. Alternately thread tofu and vegetables on four skewers (about 12 inches or 30 cm long). If using wooden skewers, soak in water at least 30 minutes prior to use. 3. Grill or broil kabobs, turning several times and brushing with any remaining marinade, until vegetables are tender and tofu is lightly browned and heated through, about 10 minutes. Kids are never too young to learn about financial literacy Children are never too young to learn basic financial skills. The earlier you start, and the more you teach them, the easier it will be for them to navigate the complexities of personal finance as they grow up. While some schools are now adding financial literacy into the curriculum, there's an important role for parents to play in teaching kids how to manage their money. Here are some ways you can help your kids become financially literate. Nothing in life is free How many times have your kids asked for a new toy, with no understanding of the cost? Even young children can be taught the concept that things cost money. Let them know how much the item they're asking for costs, and compare it to the costs of other items. It won't register right away, but it will introduce the idea and give them something to think about.
An allowance A great way to start teaching your children about money is to start giving them some. Help them set a savings goal. Is there a special toy they want? How much does it cost, and how much do they need to save to buy it? The allowance doesn't have to be a lot––even a small amount will help teach them the value of saving. Earning their allowance You can take this one step further, and create a special list of chores. You may want your kids to pick up their toys, do their homework, or bring their dishes to the kitchen without any specific reward, but for larger chores, consider letting them earn a token amount that they can put towards their savings.
Open a bank account Now that your child is learning how to value money and save, it's probably time for them to open a bank account. Start getting them more familiar with words like compound interest! Give a little (or a lot) An important lesson in life is learning that there are people who need a hand up. Now that your child is saving, don't forget to talk to them about charity, and why giving to others is just as important as saving responsibly. Talk to them about charities you support and why. Habitat for Humanity Canada is a great example, because they don't offer a handout, but a hand up. It's a smart investment too — for every $1 you donate, there are $4 in benefits to the community. www.newscanada.ca

SHOULD YOU FOREGO THE HOME INSPECTION? There are many important decisions to make when selling or buying a home, but few are as crucial as the home inspection process. You can protect your finances and create a less stressful, more rewarding real estate experience when you make an informed choice. “It is important to understand what home inspections typically cover,” recommends Norm Jensen of Royal LePage Network Realty Corp. “A home inspection has implications for pricing considerations and negotiations. As a seller, you can use an inspection to identify problems that can be repaired before you list your home. As a buyer, you can include needed repairs to amend the purchase agreement.” Here are key guidelines to help along the way: 1. A home inspection is a visual assessment and report based on what is observed on a certain day. As such, a home inspector cannot see or find everything. For example, they may not be able to inspect certain areas concealed by snow.
inspection and that having one is not a warranty or guarantee. 3. There is no such thing as a perfect house. Don't be concerned if the inspection reveals some problems. Use this information as part of your negotiations, or as a seller, have an advance inspection and take care of necessary repairs before you list the home. 4. As a buyer, you are paying for an objective opinion on the home. A good agent uses good home inspectors. It is important to know that your report is as comprehensive as possible. 5. In competitive markets, buyers often feel pressured to waive the home inspection as a condition of purchase. As a result, costly repairs that have not been budgeted for can arise after the sale is complete. It is always best to get a home inspection and an agent can help navigate the process and answer your questions. More information is available at www. royallepage.ca. www.newscanada.ca
