HOW TO GET YOUR DECK LOOKING NEW With summer on its way, now's the time to start thinking about maintaining the look of your deck. Before you start the process of cleaning and staining, it's important to know the differences between oil and waterbased stains, and which is most suited to your needs.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a stain, says the research and development team at Thompson's WaterSeal, who are experts at deck care.

The first thing to do is determine the type of wood you are working with and what kind of stain base it needs. Some woods, like cedar, have a natural resistance to rotting, so a water-based stain may work better. Weather exposure is another factor to consider — if the wood is going to be in direct exposure to wind, rain and sunlight, an oil-based stain is the best choice.

Oil-based finishes penetrate deeper into the wood, nourishing it and reducing imperfections and scratches. They are also better at preventing water damage and are long lasting. Oil-based finishes are formulated for all exterior wood types, including hardwoods.

There are also benefits to a using waterbased stain, which hide blemishes that might already be on your deck, like scratches and nicks from chairs. These stains also have a less potent odour than the oil-based finishes.

Clean up is easy, simply with soap and water.

The stain types also have some commonalities. Both protect exterior wood from the elements by preventing water damage, resisting mildew and providing UV protection, while extending the life of your exterior wood. Both can enhance your deck's appearance by adding some fresh colour.

Rev. Michael B. Martell Sacred Heart Parish

A 75 Year Birthday Worthy of Note, Celebration, and Appreciation

T

he parishioners of Sacred Heart Church held a seventy-fifth-year Birthday celebration for Reverend, Father Michael B. Martell, on Saturday April 22nd, 2017. At Sacred Heart

Parish Hall.

The Parishioners attended the celebratory mass and then proceed to a very informal gathering and greeting in the parish hall which was filled to capacity. The standing room only attendance of parishioners underlined the admiration, and genuine appreciation of the parishioners for Father Michael.

An exert taken from the Parish Web site provides a short synopsis of Father Michaels background and history as well as some of his accomplishments. I have taken the liberty of copying this exert herein, as it provides incredible insight into FR. Michael’s “Being” and his deep understanding of the Canadian experience for all Canadians regardless of their backgrounds, as well as his deep understanding of worldly issues and religious insights he so willingly shares with his Parishioners.

Fr. Michael was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, the sixth of seven children.

Upon completing high school, he joined the Augustinians in the nearby Monastery and continued his education, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ottawa in 1964. He was sent to the Augustinian International College of Saint Monica Rome for his theological studies.

During this period, he spent his summers in Germany, Austria and, Switzerland. He completed his studies in Rome in 1968 with a Licentiate (Masters) Theology and returned home to be ordained at the Monastery in Nova Scotia on August 3rd, 1968 by the Bishop of Antigonish, William E. Power. His first ten years as a Priest were spent in Racine and Kenosha, Wisconsin. He became Pastor of ST. Rita’s in Racine and Kenosha at the age of 31 . His next assignment was Pastor of St. Augustinian’s in Ottawa from 1978 until 1983 4

when he was elected Prior Provincial of the Canadian Augustinians. In 1984, he moved to King city where he served as Provincial as well as Pastor of Sacred Heart church. He also served for a brief period as Assistant General of the Order in North America, a post he relinquished shortly after moving to British Columbia. Upon completing his eight years as Provincial he was transferred to Sacred heart in Delta B. in 1991 where he served as Pastor until August 1st 2011. Fr Michael has degrees of fluency in Italian, French, and German.” He returned to Sacred Heart in 2011 and continues as Pastor.

This short history helps us to understand Fr. Michaels personality, his underlying appreciation of diversity, and his respect for the individuality of the Parishioners within the church community and the Canadian Experience. Indeed, Fr Michael’s ability to directly acknowledge, and greet people by their first name, underlies his appreciation of the “person”.

Fr. Michael’s ability to express celebratory greetings in numerous languages, on the various religious holy days including Christmas and Easter celebrations never goes unnoticed and again underlies his genuine ability to embrace, and appreciate diversity, as well as a genuine acceptance of people within

the Canadian experience, especially regarding diverse cultures, individual history and background. This embrace of diversity and individuality is foreshadowed and perpetuated by his smile upon meeting and greeting his Parishioners and others in the community.

Perhaps best appreciated by the Parishioners are his sermons. We are certain that all will agree that his sermons are more like” talks” which relate the Gospels teachings to real life issues through appropriate guidance provided by the Gospel. We have yet to meet anyone who does not appreciate and value his sermons. Father Michael retains a sense of humour shy of harsh sarcasm but nevertheless leaving one with a need to “reflect”.

Father gently nudges his Parishioners towards the teachings of the Gospel, community participation and personal growth without being overbearing, or judgemental, which in my opinion, underlies the essence of his “being”.

It was a great party, well deserved and heart warming. We again wish to take this opportunity to express our good wishes, appreciation to Father Michael and express our debt of gratitude to Cape Breton and Nova Scotia, which has provided for the gift of Father Michael to our community.

Your local Garden Centres are ready to help

We've all noticed that Spring has sprung what with the weather being so indecisive. That means gardeners have to get ready for an important time of the year— preparation for the season!

DID YOU KNOW?

With more than 700 native species in Canada, bees are the most common pollinator. Other pollinators include butterflies, moths, wasps, flies, some beetles and hummingbirds.

What better way to prepare than visiting your local garden centres? The three in King Township include Snowball Garden Centre, Bajar, and Black Forest Garden Centre. All of them are family-owned and operated like most businesses in King City.

They each had something interesting to offer but what you probably didn't know was a piece of advice from the latter garden centre. Their advice was to get pollinating kits. There are 3 types: for bees; for butterflies; and for birds. Now more than ever is the time to get them because there has been a monumental decline in natural pollinators.

This is because farms are using chemicals to kill pollinators, however, without pollinators, farmers wouldn't be able to produce quality fruits and vegetables. That's why most of the produce you see in supermarkets are

vibrant and overgrown, leading our children to think that means they're healthy. These pollinating kits come in different sizes and are easy to grow because they are native to this land. Germination has already started so make sure you get those kits now to create a healthy and abundant garden.

Make sure that you don't work too hard though because gardeners often forget about how demanding their passion can be.

Kneeling, digging, lifting, and planting puts gardeners at a high risk for developing neck and lower back pain (as I've found out from years of experience). The guys at the Garden Centre agreed, explaining that they have these same problems.

My advice is simple – use your legs while doing heavy lifting by bending your knees.

This will move the strain from your lower back to the legs, which have the biggest muscles in the body.

So there's some two-pronged advice for gardeners: save your garden and save your body.

into your coverage needs. The size and speed of a boat can vary significantly, and these two factors alone can play a major role. Whether you use the boat for recreational or commercial purposes will have an impact, as will the number of people who own the boat.
