NEW FEATURES THAT IMPROVE CAR SAFETY Every year, vehicle manufacturers research, design and develop strategies to help make vehicles better—and safer. Take a look at five new vehicle safety features to consider when you're in the market for a new car.

Blind spot monitoring systems visually alert you when a vehicle is traveling in your blind spot. Those alerts become brighter or louder if you signal to change lanes. Some systems even activate the brakes or steering controls to prevent a crash.

a camera near the rearview mirror, keeps track of your vehicle's position in a lane. Any movement to leave the lane unintentionally, including merging without signaling, creates an alert—a sound, steering wheel or seat vibration, and visual cues on the dashboard. Some systems also use light steering or braking to correct a lane departure.

Park Assist and Backover Protection One or both of these systems may soon be required in most new vehicles. Outdoor upgrades that add value to your property

DID YOU KNOW?

Even if your deck is made of pressure-treated lumber, redwood, cedar, or some other durable species, it's at risk the moment the last nail is driven home. Moisture swells the wood while the burning rays from the sun dry and shrink it, causing cracks and warping. Ultraviolet rays also discolor wood and accelerate wear by breaking down wood fibers.

During the warmer months, there's often nothing better than spending a weekend outside working in the garden or fixing up the house. Sharon Grech, Colour & Design Expert at Benjamin Moore, shares some ideas for weekend summer projects that add value to your property. Deck it out A great way to make a fresh statement in your backyard or breathe new life into an aging deck is to give it a colour makeover. Grech recommends Benjamin Moore ARBORCOAT, a premium stain available in several colours and varying opacities, designed to enhance and protect the appearance of decks, siding and outdoor wood furniture. The stain also penetrates into the wood to provide excellent UV protection. “For a modern contemporary look, I love Rustic Taupe or Westcott Navy. For a more classic look, try Leather Saddle Brown,” she says.

Curb appeal The front of your home is the first thing people notice, so keep your front yard looking fresh with budget-friendly landscape projects like adding decorative stepping stones, a small garden or window boxes. Painting your front door is another simple yet impactful project that enhances your property's curb appeal. When choosing front door colours for a dark or brick house, Grech recommends Concord Ivory HC-12 or a classic red like Dutch Tulip to brighten it up and coordinate with bright flowers. If your home is painted in a lighter colour, try a more fashion forward option like Wythe Blue HC-143 and complement with a garden of flowers in simple whites and lots of green. Get your home picture perfect Thinking of selling? The summer is the best time to photograph your home. Even if you're not planning on listing it until later in the year, arrange to take photos now when it's looking its best. Find more information at www.benjaminmoore.ca. www.newscanada.ca

A circle of strength In recent years, giving circles have ignited the philanthropic landscape of North America. By bringing together like-minded individuals with similar ambitions, giving circles provide an opportunity for donors to pool their finances and support their communities with a greater impact. Seneca recently formed its first giving circle, The King Township Women of Influence. United through their affinity for the King community, the group of women is striving to make a difference for the students at Seneca’s King Campus. Kelly Mathews, a visionary leader and one of the first members of the circle is Seneca’s Manager of Community Recreation, Camps and Outdoor Education Centre. “I have several hundred students working with me every summer. I hear about the struggles they face, not just in managing a postsecondary academic workload, but also finding the balance between part-time jobs to fund their education and time to take care of themselves,” said Mathews. “The giving circle has the ability to relieve some of the financial burdens these students face.” The King Township Women of Influence giving circle is also a great opportunity for women to network and build relationships with civic-minded individuals. The diverse group includes business owners, local councillors, philanthropists and senior members of major organizations. “Providing our young people with a postsecondary education at an institution that is part of their community, is

important for keeping our young adults in our community,” said Avia Eek, Councillor, Ward 6, King Township and

Question

When Looking for a new home, should you buy or sell first?

Answer

There is no easy answer to this question as it all depends on your comfort level with risk. There is either the possibility of positive or catastrophic results. In a perfect world and in line with my comfort level of risk, I would suggest buying conditionally on selling your home (with the assumption that market conditions allow it). If this strategy is successful, you will have eliminated any risk and will be in complete control of your destiny. This will depend on the market conditions in your neighbourhood. If you are in a buyers’ market and have a strong negotiator representing your sale, you can input a sellers condition on buying your next home. With this provision, all the risk is eliminated. If you are in a sellers’ market and you want to make the move, it will be very difficult to avoid risk. Please keep in mind that if you are at the top end of the market in your area, when the market changes it will be very quick. If this applies to your market, I would suggest you be very cautious. With any decision in real estate and analysis of your market, contact your local real estate professional who will be able to assess the market conditions. Be informed so that you may make rational choices. It is important to keep in mind this is a huge decision and life changing for you and your family.

5 reasons why your child should get in the game

DID YOU KNOW?

Childhood overweight and obesity has been rising steadily in Canada in recent decades. Between 1978/79 and 2004, the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity among those aged two to 17 years increased from 15 per cent to 26 per cent. ... Currently, 59% of adult Canadians are either overweight or obese.

The lure of screen time can often deter kids from going outside, but enrolling yours in sports or physical activity will help them stay active this summer. Here are some benefits of getting in the game: Maintain good health Did you know that, according to the federal government, only 9 per cent of kids ages five to 17 get the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity? Cardiovascular fitness, strength, improved flexibility and bone density are all developed through exercise. Plus, it helps maintain a healthy body weight and reduces the risk of health problems. Develop self-esteem Not only does getting active help improve overall mental health and well-being, it allows kids to venture beyond their comfort zones and try new things. Playing a sport fosters self-esteem and helps kids develop confidence. Learn resilience Even the best athletes in the world fail, and

learning to overcome setbacks is an important life skill. Sport is a safe place for children to push their limits — it teaches them to set goals and try again if they do not succeed the first time. Make friends Being part of a team allows kids to socialize with their peers. Almost all sports have elements of teamwork, and learning to work together is another valuable life skill. Have a blast Having fun is the most important reason to get your kids in the game this summer. Through play, kids develop a positive association with sport and physical activity, encouraging them to be active for life. For parents worried about the expenses associated with getting kids in the game, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities can help by assisting with the costs of registration, equipment and even transportation. You can support this cause by donating at your local Canadian Tire; 100 per cent of customer donations stay in the community. Fortunately, celebrated Canadian chefs, like Toronto's Cory Vitiello, make it easy with delicious recipes for any kind of family gathering.

Fresh Halibut, Pistachio & Cherry Tomato Fusilli Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 4-6 Ingredients: • 1 pkg. (340 g) Catelli Ancient Grains Fusilli

• 10 oz. Pacific halibut fillet (cut into one-inch cubes) • 1/2 cup (125 mL) pistachios, shelled and chopped • 2 cups (500 mL) cherry tomatoes • 2 handfuls of washed baby arugula • 10 slices pancetta • 12 Brussels sprouts • 1 clove of garlic • 1/4 cup (60 mL) extra virgin olive oil • 1/3 cup (83 mL) flat leaf parsley, chopped • Salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. 2. Slice pancetta into half-inch pieces. Over medium heat, cook pancetta in large sauté pan until it begins to brown and tender. Add garlic, cherry tomatoes and olive oil and cook until tomatoes begin to blister and burst. 3. Add pasta to boiling water and cook fusilli

according to package instructions. 4. Add halibut to pan; lightly season with salt and sauté over medium heat, turning pieces over for 3 to 4 minutes until lightly browned and just cooked. Fish should be flaky and fork tender. 5. Roughly chop pistachios and thinly slice Brussels sprouts, removing root ends. 6. Add pistachios, Brussels sprouts and arugula to sauté pan and stir on medium heat until greens are wilted — no more than 2 minutes. 7. Drain cooked pasta and add to sauté pan; gently stir in chopped parsley and a pinch of salt. Add pepper to taste. Drizzle with olive oil and garnish with extra parsley leaves.
