THREE STRATEGIES FOR RAISING CONFIDENT KIDS We all want the best for our kids, and building their confidence is a great way help them become happy, healthy and successful adults. Try these three strategies recommended by registered early childhood educators, who are trained in child development and plan play-based early learning and care programs. Encourage decision-making Confidence in making small decisions leads to confidence in making bigger ones, so it's important from an early age to allow your child to have some say in their life. Even something as seemingly insignificant as choosing their outfit for the day or occasionally picking the movie
you'll all watch together as a family can go a long way toward helping them learn to trust their instincts. Empower Respond to children's challenging behaviours by working to discover potential causes and stressors, and then reacting warmly and supportively. Try actively listening to your kids, providing them with choices, helping them label emotions, and acknowledging positive behaviours and hard work. “These strategies empower children and respect their competence,” explains Melanie Dixon, director of professional practice at the College of Early Childhood Educators.
Inspire creativity Kids thrive when they use their imaginations, so provide plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery using everyday objects. Go on nature walks or have fun with an easy DIY creative project. Remember that there's no “right” way to play — the most fun and learning happens in just doing things. HELPFUL ONE WEEKEND SPRING CLEANING TIPS Get a head start on decluttering, organizing and simplifying your life with these tasks you can complete in just a couple of days.
Monitor expiry dates Check your medicine cabinet, beauty products and kitchen for expired items.
The one year rule Pick an area in your home — your closet, cupboards or bookcase — and apply the one year rule. If you haven't worn it or used it in any way over the last twelve months, donate or toss it. You can make an exception for souvenirs or sentimental items.
Clean as a team Involve the family to quickly deep clean a room or two, going into all the nooks and crannies that everyday cleaning misses. Get all the doorknobs, handles and light switches, and move furniture and items in back corners to clean accumulated dust.
Organize your entertainment Sort your books, magazines, DVDs, records, and games in a way that makes sense for everyday use. Put those for the kids on lower shelves for easy access, and sell or donate any they (or you) have outgrown.
Go paperless Have you ever gone through paperwork and found a cheque you forgot to cash? Avoid having to tidy up your home office next year by moving to paperless — in banking, shopping and government payments.
If you haven't worn it or used it in any way over the last twelve months, DONATE IT OR TOSS IT. Receive your federal payments — including your pension benefits, the Canada Child Benefit and other tax-related payments such as the GST/HST credit — straight into your bank account by signing up for direct deposit. It's the fastest, safest and greenest way to get your payments. Visit your financial institution or go to directdeposit.gc.ca for more information. www.newscanada.ca

International Women's Day and the fight for EQUALITY International Women's Day is rooted in the struggle for gender equality. Celebrated on March 8, this international event is affiliated with the United Nations, which began recognizing the day in 1970. Its rich history shows just how much women have accomplished — but the battle is not yet over. Girls and women still experience inequality in many areas, especially when it comes to access to education. Over 30 million girls of secondary school age were out of school in 2013. That's 30 million girls who did not have the chance to go to school past grade nine because of poverty and discrimination. Education has the power to change lives and improve the livelihoods of entire communities. But when girls are denied access to schooling, their chance for a better life significantly decreases. Young women who do not finish
secondary school are often forced into early marriage, teen pregnancy, sexual exploitation, and/ or manual labour. But according to the United Nations, if all girls in sub-Saharan Africa and South/West Asia had a secondary school education, the rate of child

Yet a college or university degree is needed more than ever to succeed in the job market. Healthy Foods to reach for to PREVENT COLDS and FLUS One of the easiest ways to keep your immune system strong is eating healthy foods. To prevent you and your family from succumbing to cold and flu season, the Canadian Health Food Association recommends the following foods:
Kimchi The ancient tradition of fermented food has become increasingly popular in Canada — for good reason. This fermented cabbage dish from Korea is not only rich in vitamins C, E and A, carotenoids and antioxidant enzymes, it's also
a healthy whole-food source of probiotics, the good gut bacteria that keep your immune system in check. Kimchi can be an acquired taste, so if you're not sure it's for you, you may want to consider taking a probiotic supplement instead. Garlic Over a third of Canadians say they consume garlic to stay healthy during cold and flu season. That's because this member of the allium family is known to reduce cold symptoms and improve immune cell activity. Garlic is delicious in homemade salad dressings, dips or stir fries, but if you're worried about bad breath, try an odourless supplement instead.
Nuts Whether you add them to your cereal and salads or have them as an afternoon snack, nuts are a good choice for supporting immune function. Cashews and pecans, for example, provide the perfect blend of immuneboosting nutrients, including protein, vitamin E and zinc; while Brazil nuts are high in selenium.
Mushrooms The benefits of reishi mushroom extracts on the immune system are well documented. Available in supplement form, reishi mushrooms have been consumed for thousands of years in Asia as a tea. The process of hot water extraction releases beneficial carbohydrates and fibres that can increase the production of certain white blood cells to help identify and break down invading bugs. And there's nothing more soothing than a hot cup of tea on a cold winter day. Visit chfa.ca to find your local CHFA Member health food store and stock up today. www.newscanada.ca

Question
Is it a good idea to purchase life insurance for my child?
Answer
Great question. It is definitely a good idea to purchase life insurance for your child or children. Here's why:
1. The child can lock in early at a very favorable rate. 2. You are guaranteeing your child's future insurability as there is no certainty with their future
even more a possibility today where mortgage companies are starting to tighten their lending policies. In circumstances where your asking price is below market, are you really capturing your market audience? Instead, you are reaching buyers who will have to stretch their purchase price point to meet your expectations. How high can they go? Our marketing strategy would be to have your home assessed health. Many policies allow you to add a guaranteed insurability option, where you can upgrade their coverage at different points in the future without a medical exam. 3. The policies can build cash value that you can use for any purchase such as school or putting a down payment on a home. Guaranteed growth. Your cash value is able to grow tax deferred as long as you have your policy. Whatever goes on in the markets, your premiums and guaranteed values will not be impacted.

If you go to the market at the buyer's price point, you are allowing the laws of supply and demand to dictate your highest price point. YUMMY and nutritious sweets Two classic Canadian ingredients come together to make this delectable dessert. Don't feel too guilty for indulging — using beans in your baking ups the protein and fibre content and adds important vitamins and minerals you wouldn't normally find in a sweet treat.
Bean & Maple Syrup Bars Ingredients • 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour • 1 cup (250 mL) brown sugar • 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter, cut into pieces, at room temperature • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) white pea beans, soaked and cooked or canned in water; drained and rinsed • 2/3 cup (150 mL) maple syrup • 3 eggs • 1/2 cup (125 mL) brown sugar • 1/2 cup (125 mL) melted butter • 1 cup pecans, chopped • 2 oz (60 g) semi-sweet chocolate (optional) • 24 halved pecans (optional) Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). 2. In a food processor or mixing bowl, combine flour and sugar. Add butter pieces and pulse or cut in until crumbly. Transfer into a greased 9x13” pan and press evenly into bottom. Set aside. 3. Filling: In a food processor or blender, purée beans and maple syrup. When smooth, add the eggs, sugar, and butter and blend well. 4. Sprinkle chopped pecans evenly over base, then pour filling over top. Bake for 30 minutes or until set in the middle and lightly browned. Cool to room temperature.5. In a double boiler, melt chocolate over barely simmering water. Drizzle chocolate over bars in a criss-cross pattern. Refrigerate bars until chocolate has set. Cut into triangles and garnish each one with a pecan half.

HEALTHY SNACKING FOR SPRING BREAK This time of year is perfect for motivating kids to eat right and get moving. But how can parents help create healthy habits? With childhood obesity on the rise, one strategy is getting the required daily servings of fruit and vegetables. Children and teens who eat fruit and vegetables five or more times a day are much less likely to be overweight or obese than those who eat them less often. A food that's great for growing and adult bodies alike is mushrooms. Here are three reasons why:
Essential nutrients Growing kids need a variety of foods to get all the essential nutrients. Fresh mushrooms are a good source of riboflavin, copper, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, niacin and pantothenic acid. They also contribute to daily intakes of folate, thiamin, vitamin B6, iron, magnesium and zinc.
Fresh mushrooms contain significant levels of l-ergothioneine, which acts as an antioxidant in both cooked and raw mushrooms.
Adding antioxidants Fresh mushrooms contain significant levels of l-ergothioneine, which acts as an antioxidant in both cooked and raw mushrooms. Beta-glucans, a type of carbohydrate found in mushrooms, has potential anti-inflammatory activity that may help protect the body against disease.
making them a great choice for keeping hungry kids full without a lot of extra calories. Snacking on a variety of raw veggies, including mushrooms, with a dip means kids get a full serving of this food guide requirement. They'll also be more likely to resist temptation from less nutritious processed snack foods.
Fill up on fruits and vegetables Fresh mushrooms have high water content, are low in fat, and contain some fibre,

HOW TO STOP WINDOW CONDENSATION If beads of water run down the inside of your windows during cold weather, it's not necessarily a sign you've got bad windows. In fact, your windows are probably doing just what they're supposed to do ( keeping outdoor air outside. Wet windows can simply be an indication of two different but related problems. Indoor humidity levels in your house may be too high, or the quality of air inside your home probably isn't what it should be. The solution to both these issues is increased ventilation. Experiment by running exhaust fans and range hoods longer and more often than usual, while also opening a couple of windows an inch or two. As stale, humid air is forced outside, fresh, low-moisture air is drawn indoors. With sufficient ventilation, indoor humidity levels will drop, your windows will dry out, and the quality of air you 14

breathe will improve. The only trouble is heat loss ( you'll be losing precious heated air to the outdoors. Want to have fresh air without raising your heating costs? A ventilation appliance called a heat recovery ventilator is the solution. It draws fresh outdoor air into your home while recovering most of the heat from stale, humid indoor air that it expels outside. A properly installed and operated HRV will solve wintertime window condensation and boost indoor air quality. If you install an HRV, make sure you hire someone who's properly qualified to do this type of specialized work. The Canadian Home Builder's Association can help you connect with a heating and ventilation pro who can solve your condensation problems and boost indoor air quality.
