TASTE THE SEASON WITH THESE ON-THE-GO TREATS Holiday baking wouldn't be complete without everyone's favourite, gingerbread. Not only are these delicious muffins high in fibre, they're dairy-free and gluten-free. Made with pulses — crops that include dry beans, dry peas, lentils, and chickpeas — this staple is low in fat and high in protein, fibre, and complex carbohydrates. First, make the brown rice flour blend, an essential ingredient in the gingerbread muffins that can also be used in other recipes. Brown Rice Flour Blend Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) brown rice flour • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) potato starch • 1 cup (250 mL) tapioca flour (also called tapioca starch) Directions: 1. Blend thoroughly. Store tightly closed in dark, dry place.
Gingerbread Muffins Prep time: 10 minutes Bake time: 20 to 35 minutes Makes: 12 Muffins
Ingredients: • 1 cup (250 mL) brown rice flour blend • 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda • 2 tsp (10 mL) ground ginger • 1 tsp (5 mL) cinnamon • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) ground cloves • 1 tsp (5 mL) xanthan gum • 1/2 tsp (2 ML) table salt • 1 cup (250 mL) lentil or bean purée • 2 large eggs, room temperature • 2/3 cup (150 mL) packed brown sugar • 1/3 cup (75 mL) canola oil • 1/3 cup (75 mL) molasses (not blackstrap) • 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract • 1 tsp (5 mL) apple cider vinegar Directions: 1. Place rack in middle of oven. Preheat oven to 350ºF (180ºC). Generously grease standard 12-cup non-stick muffin pan or line with paper liners. 2. Rinse and drain a 15 ounce can of pulses, then discard the liquid; yields about 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) pulses. 3. Place the pulses in a food processor, add 1/4 cup (50 mL) hot water and purée, scraping down sides of bowl frequently, until mixture has the consistency of canned
pumpkin; about 3 minutes. If needed, add additional water, 15 mL (1 tablespoon) at a time, to reach this consistency. 4. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together rice flour blend, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, xanthan gum, and salt until well blended. Add lentil purée, eggs, brown sugar, oil, molasses, vanilla, and vinegar and beat with an electric mixer on low speed until blended. Divide batter evenly in muffin pan. 5. Bake until toothpick inserted into centre of muffin comes out clean, about 20 to 25 minutes. Cool muffins in pan for 10 minutes on wire rack. Remove from pan and cool completely on wire rack. TheRainMakerTeam made it rain on Martin Street in King City
W
e were called in on October 21, 2016 to assess 68 Martin Street. This home was an average 3 bedroom, 4 level side split with a two car garage on the north side of the road. It had a lot size of 78 feet by 128 feet for a total lot square footage of 10,146. The previous three sales on the south side of the road during the last month had much larger lots (35% larger lot square footage). Two of the homes were side splits and one was a two storey home with two car garage. We jointly came to the conclusion that we were of lesser value as the other properties sold from $1,250,000 to $1,280,000. Due to the lot square footage being at least 35% smaller, our sellers wished to maximize their sale price as quickly as possible. O u r s t at e - of - t h e - a r t marketing plan went into effect. We listed at $1,188,000 and were to be on the market for November 3, 2016. The 'Just Listed' flyers were ordered
and distributed to all of King Township by November 2, 2016. Our technical team went to work on social media. In addition, we advertised the home in one of the major papers in King Township and Vaughan in the November 3, 2016 issue. Due to extraordinar y circumstances we were only able to show the home on Sunday November 7, 2016 to six prospective buyers. During the listing we welcomed offers at anytime because holding offers can be high risk wherein to create a frenzy, you must be priced well below market. It begs the question whether you are really getting the highest price! You would not reach your target market that would qualify for a higher sale price. The Monday after we listed it rained on the owners of 68 Martin Street. We had four offers and sold firm for $1,301,000! The sellers were ecstatic (and in shock). 9 TRICKS FOR NEVER LOSING YOUR LUGGAGE Don't let a lost or delayed suitcase put a damper on your holidays — use these tips from the Canadian Transportation Agency to help keep you and your precious belongings from parting ways. 1. Stand out. Brightly coloured baggage with unique prints and patterns will help your bag stand out in a crowd and prevent someone else from mistakenly picking it up as their own. Plain black is the most common colour, so avoid this if you can. You can also save by decorating your existing suitcase with stickers, fabric, or tape. 2. Label wisely. Always include your contact information and your destination contact information inside each piece of baggage. This helps identify baggage if any outside tag was damaged or lost. 6
KING LIVING
3. Make a list of items in your bag. This will come in handy in case you need to make a claim for lost items. If your bags are delayed, keep all receipts for necessary purchases. 4. Update your airline tags. Before leaving for the airport, remove any old airline tags. When you receive a new one, be sure the airport code matches your destination. 5. Pack lightly. The best way to avoid losing your luggage is to not check in any at all — pack lightly and efficiently and fit everything into your carry-on. 6. Have a backup plan. If you're travelling with someone or are checking more than one bag, divide up your contents. This way, if one gets lost, you won't automatically lose all your stuff.
7. Take pictures. If your luggage does go missing, this will help provide a record of what it looked like on the outside and the contents inside. This will come in handy when an airline staff member is helping you find it, or if you need to file a complaint or insurance claim. 8. Go the smart route. Invest in a tracking device that you can place inside your luggage and connect and track with your smartphone. 9. Fly direct. Minimize your chances of a delayed flight or a luggage transfer between connections separating you from your goods whenever possible. Opt for the direct route instead — the extra cost may save you grief at the carousel. www.newscanada.ca
SNOW BIRDS, KEEP YOUR NEST SAFE FROM UNWANTED VISITORS The winter months often see the flight of Canadian snow bird vacationers down south. While leaving your snow-covered home for a beach and tan may be appealing, your empty home may seem like an open invitation for prying eyes and unwanted guests. Fortunately, the tips below can help you keep your home safe while you're off chasing the sun.
Don't disclose that your home is empty Be sure not to disclose the dates of your trip on social media or leave voicemail messages that reveal that you'll be away. Providers like belairdirect can help you assess if you have the right coverage ahead of your trip, letting you shift your focus to sun protection.
Set up some “traps” to foil intruders Put away the thumb tacks — there are some simple “traps” you can put in place to keep your home secure. Install a safety bar on patios or place a stick in between a sliding door to prevent it from opening. Set the ultimate trap by activating your home alarm system.
Create the impression your home is holiday headquarters While you don't have to stage a bustling holiday party, you can do simple things to protect yourself. Install a timer to turn lights on and off at different times and ask a neighbour or relative to shovel your driveway, move your vehicle, and collect your mail. The appearance that you are home is a great detractor.
Be proactive Be sure to put away any outdoor items that could be used to break into your home, turn off water, drain all systems and appliances, and unplug electrical devices. Above all else, make sure you're properly insured. Providers like belairdirect can help you get a coverage quote in a fraction of the time it takes to hit the airport. www.newscanada.ca

ACTOR ADRIAN GRENIER VISITS KING CITY ANIMAL SHELTER
E
very Sunday, Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary, a private dog and horse rescue located in King City, hosts a public open house where visitors can tour the sanctuary grounds and interact with adoptable dogs who are searching for homes. These open houses draw hundreds of guests each week, and are the driving force behind nearly 800 adoptions in the past two years. This Sunday, visitors to the one-of-a-kind sanctuary were in for a surprise when Entourage actor Adrian Grenier stopped by to see the rescue, and, of course,
“If you want a dog, adopt a stray. Helping to rehabilitate animals who are the most in need is one of the most rewarding experiences." hang out with some dogs. “We have always admired Adrian Grenier
Adrian’s passion for rescue animals, and it was an honour to have him visit our sanctuary so that we could speak about the work that we are doing to create a more positive shelter experience for dogs and humans alike.” said Danielle Eden,
co-owner of Dog Tales Rescue. Adrian took the time to meet all 80 dogs what currently call Dog Tales home, however he was particularly drawn to the dogs who had been in the shelter the longest - dogs like

FIND THE PERFECT LITTLE BLACK DRESS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE Every woman needs that quintessential LBD (little black dress) that fits her impeccably and can come to her rescue in a pinch. Exude style and feel comfortable at whatever holiday soirée you have planned by simply narrowing in on the ideal dress for your shape. With a packed holiday season approaching, use these tips to help you choose a flawless LBD before the closet crunch is here. Apple-shaped? Choose a drop-waist If you're heavier in the middle and above the waist, then you're apple-shaped. Get glam with a Jessica Bodré dress with tie waist. Its drop-waist moves attention downwards to draw the eye away from your top.
Pear-shaped? Try a v-neck with empire waist Choose a v-neck and empire waist to draw attention upwards and create a balanced silhouette. The v-neck will elongate your upper body and the flare will move the eye away from your midsection. Hourglass figure? Pick a shift dress You're an hourglass shape if your bust and hips are well-balanced with a defined waist. A shift dress is simple but embodies a timeless understated glam. Fitted and fabulous, a collared dress will hug your curves in all the right places and the detailed neckline adds a touch of playfulness. 7 ELEMENTS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR HOME RENOVATION CONTRACT
“A
verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written on.” While historians disagree on who came up with this timeless quote, its accuracy isn't questioned. That's why when you hire someone to work on your home, you need a written contract. A contract can be a simple one-page document or a “contract package” of many pages, depending on the size and complexity of your project. But there are common elements that should be included in any contract.
products to be used, including brand, name/number, colour, and dimensions; the contractor's responsibilities spelled out in detail; and the homeowner's responsibilities. Complex projects require longer descriptions, and details can be added as attachments that are part of the contract. Project schedule For simple projects, a start and completion date. For larger projects, a detailed timeline that lays out significant project milestones — for example,

Larger projects may require one or more progress payments, tied to completion of specific project milestones. Contractor's insurance and workers' compensation The contract should include a Certificate of Insurance showing the contractor is covered if they cause damage to your home or to neighbouring properties, or injury to you or third parties. Most contractors are required to have Workers' Compensation coverage — this should be also noted in the contract with a Letter of Clearance attached. Warranty A contract should spell out the warranty provided, specifying

ECO-FRIENDLY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS FOR A GREENER 2017 Every year, resolutions are set with high expectations — whether it's to read more, or the all-too-familiar go to the gym — only to be broken a few weeks later. This year, change up your standby resolutions and set one to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Not only will you better yourself, you'll improve the environment now and for future generations. Check out these simple changes you can make to your daily habits: 1. Use reusable bags and containers for grocery shopping, packing lunches, and storing leftovers. 2. Choose products that are returnable, reusable, or refillable over single-use items. 3. Avoid individually wrapped items and single-serve containers. Instead, look for
large containers of items or buy from bulk bins whenever practical. 4. Properly dispose of products such as tires, batteries, and paint. Check with your local municipality on what can be recycled in your community. 5. Purchase items that are made from recycled materials, including recycled paper and products designed from recycled tire rubber. HOW TO GIFT THE PERFECT BOTTLE OF WINE FOR THE HOLIDAYS A bottle of good wine often makes the perfect present for a holiday host. But gifting wine can sometimes be a bit intimidating. “Many of us just want to enjoy a good glass of wine without thinking about it. So sometimes keeping it simple might be the best way to find the perfect present,” advises Jane Masters, who is one of the world's 354 masters of wine and tastes and handpicks wines for Opimian, Canada's largest wine community. For Masters, the most important thing about buying wine for someone else is to find out what wine styles they like. Does your friend tend to drink red wine more than white, or are they a fan of rosé? Do they like wines from a particular country, like France or Australia? Or are they fans of a specific grape variety, like Chardonnay, 14
