SMARTPHONE/POINT AND SHOOT/DIGITAL SLR. NO MATTER WHAT DEVICE YOU USE TO TAKE PHOTOS, WHAT LOOKS FINE ON THE DEVICE MAY LEAVE YOU DISAPPOINTED WHEN YOU WANT TO MAKE THAT SPECIAL IMAGE INTO AN ENLARGEMENT, A POSTER OR A SCREEN-SAVER. EACH MONTH, THIS COLUMN WILL AIM TO PROVIDE UNDERSTANDABLE, PRACTICAL, LARGELY NON-TECHNICAL ADVICE TO HELP YOU MAKE BETTER PHOTOS.

GO LOW. GO HIGH.

1

Taking photos while standing is natural, but opportunities for better photos may occur when you change elevation.

2

GO LOW Go Low is especially important to get down to the right level for children and pets, for example. Compare photo 1, taken from a standing height, with photo 2, taken while kneeling down to the subject’s eye level. In some settings, getting below the level of the action, such as when performers are on stage, may produce a powerful perspective, as in photo 3.

3 4

GO HIGH Go High should also be considered, as long as it is safe! Everyday opportunities include balconies (photo 4, with special permission from Koerner Hall), benches, grandstands, ladders, steps and staircases. But always remember that your safety is the priority. Some events provide unique elevations for accredited media (photo 5, Estonian Folkdance Festival from a broadcast tower).

PET ADOPTION

GIVE A LOVING ANIMAL A NEW LEASE ON LIFE. All these adorable baby bunnies are Himalayan mix, and will be ready to go home the first week of October! The babies have been very well socialized in foster care and are healthy, funny, vibrant little cuties! With a complete application you can go visit them in foster care to pick out the apple(s) of your eye! Bunnies are highly social and these adorable babies must be adopted in pairs. As well, a single bunny can be adopted to bond with your lonely fixed bunny at home. Bonding a baby and adult bunny is usually more straight forward than bonding two adults. The LCHS will provide instructions to assist you. Adopting a pair of babies is awesome because they are already bonded and all that work is done for you... so adopting a pair is a sweet way to go! There are all sorts of pets in the foster homes, so the babes should be ok with other pets so long as your dog/cat is the gentle/ mature type with low prey drive. Otherwise you could just have a committed bunny room in your house to keep bunny separated. Email smallanimals@lchs.ca to apply to adopt today! There is an adoption fee of $30/bunny and includes spay/neuter once they’re old enough (generally 4-5 months of age). Babies can go home early October.

To meet these bunnies, or any of our other adoptable pets, please visit our shelter. MON to FRI - 9:00 am to 5:00 pm SAT - 10:00 am to 4:00 pm SUN - 11:00 am to 3:00 pm

Winona PEACH FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN STYLE Visitors from far and wide attended the 3-day event that occurred August 25-27, 2017 at Winona Park. Celebrating 50 years is special – so special that our very own Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau dropped in as part of a whirlwind tour of Southern Ontario. The Winona Peach Festival is a unique based festival operated entirely by volunteers. Their motto is “People Working Together for a Better Community.” The Festival is owned and operated by 19 communitybased churches, sports and service organizations that come together for this fundraising extravaganza. Sue London, from Community Captured has given us a look at Behind the Scenes work it takes to make this Festival such a success. A big thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors, organizers and exhibitors.

School Life GRIMSBY

SECONDARY SCHOOL Back to school. A time for new beginnings and fresh starts. An opportunity to set goals and strive for new horizons. Students receive new timetables, staff are planning units and lessons. The halls are abuzz with students and staff sharing with friends and colleagues the adventures of the summer and the hopes and dreams for this school year. We welcome our students new to grade 9 from a variety of elementary schools and the students in grades 10-12 who have joined us from South Lincoln High School. This year we also have many new staff, some from South Lincoln, and some due to retirements and teachers moving to other schools. We also have three teachers taking maternity leaves this year. Congratulations to the Richter, Landon and Drake families on the arrival of their newest family members. Some students took summer school classes or participated in earning online credits. Their records were updated and timetables reviewed to ensure they are taking the courses they need to fulfill their diploma requirements. Many also completed community service hours and recorded them in Hour Republic so that their files are kept up-to-date. Our grade 9 students, senior student mentors and many staff members are excitedly preparing for Camp Eagle. At the end of September they will head north for a three day adventure that will include canoeing and kayaking, high ropes courses, beach volleyball, campfires and a polar bear morning dip in the lake to name a few of the activities. Why Camp Eagle? As part of our Eagles student mentorship program, our new students get to know each other and to make connections with some of our senior students and staff and our senior students continue to develop their leadership skills. Everyone spends time engaging in collaborative, team-building activities. Camp Eagle has become a highlight for many of our students over the past number of years and we look forward to hearing about it when they return. Upon their return, mentorship continues throughout the year with monthly workshops, trainings and events to ensure students have the necessary skills to be as successful as possible. Teams and clubs are starting. The list is extensive and I know that there is something of interest for everyone as a leader or participant. Student Council, Prefects, Students Aware, among other groups have started meeting regularly. The football team has been practicing and their season has begun. There will also be intramural athletics, club meetings and Student Council spirit activities at lunchtime again this year that will be open to everyone. Lots to do and plenty of support to do it. We encourage all students to look for something that interests them and get involved. The co-curricular activities are the times most remembered when you are an adult. Our yearbook is student-produced. The yearbook club meets all year long, takes pictures at events, games, meeting, assemblies, etc. There is also a yearbook class that grade 11 and 12 students can take to have time dedicated on a daily basis to learning all aspects of yearbook production. There is a new classroom shop space for the grade 9 exploring technologies program. This program provides students with an opportunity to work in the design, construction, auto, and manufacturing shops to get an idea of what they would like to pursue in future years.

GSS has offered free, daytime, computer classes to adults for many years, and this year we will also offer free, daytime, ESL classes for interested adults. These classes are open to any adult. Information is available at the Lifetime Learning Centre, 905-646-3737. All are welcome. Talk to any GSS student about their goals, interests and involvement in the school. I am sure they will be happy to share many exciting stories with you about the abundant learning opportunities and the positive impact that GSS is having in their life. I would like to thank the Grimsby community for their continued support of GSS as we begin another exciting year together.

EDEN

HIGH SCHOOL Eden is excited to welcome Sharon Burns as the new Principal of Eden High School. She comes from 15 years in administration and brings with her a wealth of experience from a variety of schools. Most recently, she was Principal of South Lincoln High School in Smithville. Mrs Burns said “I have always felt that it is my responsibility to ensure children receive a quality education within a safe, respectful environment. I am a great believer in the connection between home and school. Working together only enhances your child’s educational experiences.” Because we are such a geographically diverse community, this year Eden will use digital media more than ever as a way to instantly share what we value in our learners. Connect with Principal Burns on Twitter @EdenPrincipal. There you will see her introductory message to both parents and students. You may learn a bit about her professional interests by looking back on her Twitter story during her time as Principal at South Lincoln High School. If you prefer not to use Twitter, our website (www. eden.dsbn.org) will have the Principal’s Twitter account on it for your viewing at any time. Book mark this site as we will update it regularly. Many parents find reading the Morning Announcements useful!

NEXT YEAR WE WELCOME NEW STAFF Annie Mercier-Beaudoin (Guidance) Kerry Rorison (Auto) Tara Colavecchia (EA) Ruth-Anne Sabourin (EA) David Lavictoire (Science) Jennifer Smalldon (Sem 2 English and Social Science) While Eden High School is undergoing an extensive overhaul on its aging heating system, the disruption to learning will be minimal but the school will look a little different. A few classes at a time will be closed for renovations and many ceiling tiles on the first floor are down. This project will continue for the remainder of the school year. Eden has jumped right into the season with great academics, arts, athletics and clubs. It’s going to be a fabulous year for the Flyers.

BEAMSVILLE DISTRICT SECONDARY SCHOOL

BDSS students achieved at extremely high levels in 2016-17, and we expect more of the same through our upcoming school year. All-time highs in credit accumulation (98%), students reaching Provincial standard, and incredibly engaging co-curricular activities. The Rankin Run community fundraiser, amazing tournaments, Camp Buc, tech skills achievements, Trivia Night, sports tournaments, the Turkey Dinner and our production of The Wizard of Oz showed the Bucs spirit is as strong as ever. Thank you to the students, staff, parents, and community members who have made this possible.

BDSS has SHSM programs in Sport, Welding and Manufacturing, Horticulture, and beginning in September, a new SHSM program in Hospitality and Tourism. We have an SHSM link on our webpage (see above) for more information – please call the school if you would like to learn more about the programs, or would like to speak to someone about enrolling your student in one of them.

CAMP BUCCANEER

Communicating with families is a priority for our school. We recognize that paper newsletters are often lost, telephone voice broadcasts can be annoying, and that no one social media platform is preferred by everyone. To better communicate with our parents and families about upcoming school events, student achievements, and important dates, we have set up a number of different BDSS social media accounts. Please connect with us using the platform of your choice – we are very proud of our students, and look forward to sharing their achievements.

Beamsville District Secondary School is pleased to invite our grade 9 students to participate in Camp Buccaneer 2016. Camp Buccaneer will take place from September 20th – 22nd, 2016 at Cave Springs Camp in Vineland, Ontario. The purpose of the camp is to build teamwork, leadership potential, and a sense of community amongst Beamsville students. All grade 9 students are being encouraged to attend the camp and take advantage of a great opportunity to immediately connect with others in their grade, as well as meet many senior students that are BDSS leaders within the school. Located in a beautiful outdoor setting, Beamsville students will take part in activities such as high ropes, archery, hikes, crafts, campfire and many other team building exercises designed to challenge, develop and empower students. For more information and registration forms please contact the main office. See you at Camp!

BACK TO SCHOOL Essentials 0I

GET A BACKPACK

Getting a new backpack is a treat, a fashion statement and a necessity. Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back for comfort. Let your child have a say in what it looks like. Their memories of that year will often depend on if they liked their daily rituals.

02 ORGANIZE WARDROBE Children grow and wardrobe needs change. Donate or trade what isn’t enjoyed or ill fitting and shop for essentials that your child likes, is comfortable in and is durable. Reorganize their closet and dresser. Having easily accessed items helps to make morning rituals a breeze.
