TRIPLE BILL

JAWS VIEWING

There is always something exciting happening at Hugh’s Room! Monday August 29th was no exception. There was an intimate crowd who came to hear the duo The Mayhemingways as they started the evening with their Fuzz Folk music followed by Hillsburn and then Brock Zeman finished off the night of the Triple Bill.

The Friends of Sorauren Park held their second movie night of the summer on Saturday, August 27. This movie night featured the 1975 classic, JAWS, and was shown at Sorauren Avenue Park's big outdoor screen at the Town Square. Neighbours gathered with their blankets and lawn chairs and could purchase snacks including popcorn. September's movie will be a children's film and the public can vote on which one they'd like to see!

THE TRAGICALLY HIP IN SORAUREN PARK

The Friends of Sorauren Park in association with CBC Music, brought the Canadian musical event of the year to the Sorauren Park Town Square, by presenting The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration On Saturday, August 20. The live concert from Kingston, Ontario was shown on the park's giant outdoor screen for everyone and anyone to enjoy. The concert was the band's final performance of their cross-Canada Man Machine Poem Tour and possibly the band's last ever. Excitement was in the air at Sorauren Park as over 1,500 people of all ages brought their blankets, chairs, snacks and dancing shoes to celebrate one of Canada's most loved musical acts. MP Arif Virani also spoke with extreme excitement in his voice and wished everyone a great time. As the night sky fell upon the square and the stars began to appear, the moment came when The Tragically Hip took the stage and the enormous crowd erupted in applause. Every song was met with applause as if the band was actually playing in the park. Singing and dancing soon ensued throughout the park's audience as the band powered through hit after hit to the delight of all in the square. It was truly a magical and memorable night to see a little bit of Canadian history being made. Photo Credits to: Shane Jeffery

MICHAEL

CONTINUES TO TRAIN... Written by MICHAEL LEWIS, Snap Fitness Member

M

ichael Lewis came into Snap Fitness on Roncesvalles in October, 2013. He was set up for a consultation with Trainer Jason. Anxious at never having been to a gym in his life, Michael started training with Jason twice a week. In June of this year Michael completed his 200th session, at the age of 71!

Why did he come in, and why did he keep going? Two reasons: his wife Janice encouraged him to go to the gym because she feels making an effort to keep in shape as an older person is important. Furthermore, in his opinion he was extremely fortunate to meet a Trainer who made the gym a welcoming space. According to Michael, Jason was such an interesting, fun, and engaging person that he makes the hour-long sessions a pleasure. "As well, he's a great Trainer who considered my age and fitness background (walking only) when designing a programme that suits. I think it's quite likely that if I had been introduced to any other Trainer, I would have given up long ago."

Michael has noticed a positive change to his energy levels and confidence, has better balance, and has been able to maintain and even gain physical strength. "It's working with clients like Michael that really keeps me going," says Jason. "I enjoy getting to know my clients because it's one of the best ways to really understand what they're looking to achieve, and how I can help." Jason has employed a range of techniques with Michael, including both machines and free weights, core exercises, stretching, and rubber-band work. torontohighpark@snapfitness.com

Making Your cat’s next veterinary visit as stress free as possible

I

f we are all in agreement that annual check ups are a great way to keep our pets healthy then why is it that dog owners are twice as likely to bring their pets to the vet versus cat owners?

The answer is simple; cats tend to be territorial by nature, like to have control of their environment and are very sensitive to sounds and smells, all of which can make a visit to the vet very stressful for them and their owner. Here are a few tips that might make any vet visit more tolerable for both you and your cat. BOOKING AN APPOINTMENT: Ask your veterinarian if they are a “Cat Friendly” Clinic; http://www.catvets.com/cat-owners/find-vets-and-practices This accreditation shows that these animal hospitals have protocols in place to help make your pet’s visit to the vet as stress free as possible. You might also want to enquire if you clinic has “cat only” hours or if there are quieter times that might work better for your cat? Given that many Toronto dog owners bring their pets to the vet in the Spring for seasonal blood testing, cat owners might want to avoid booking annual exams during this time if their pet is not comfortable around dogs. Finally, if when you arrive at the clinic, the waiting room is quite loud and busy you might want to ask a receptionist to allow you to go directly into a quiet exam room and wait for your appointment to start in there. GETTING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT: Always bring your cat in an “approved” cat carrier. Believe it or not we’ve had animals show up at the clinic in milk crates, Rubbermaid containers, and even jerry-rigged cardboard beer cases. I can assure you, these are no match for a determined cat! We once had a client walk in with her cat in her hands. As she was trying to enter the clinic the cat panicked and leapt from her arms running across Dundas Street. Luckily, my staff quickly sprang into action and stopped traffic on the street until the cat was safely returned to her owner but this scenario could have ended much worse. I would also recommend a carrier that opens from the top as this makes it easier to get the cat in and out of the carrier as opposed to front loading carriers.

We always recommend leaving the carrier out in the cat’s home environment for a few days prior to the visit. It would also be a good idea to bring the carrier out randomly on occasion when at home so it is not just associated with vet visits. Rubbing a soft cloth on your cat’s face and then rubbing it over the carrier will also help reassure him that this is a safe place. You can also consider spraying a synthetic calming pheromone such as Feliway (available at most veterinary offices) inside the carrier at least 15 minutes prior to the visit. Hopefully, these tips should help you avoid the “cat wrangling rodeo” that often ensues as you try to place your cat in their carrier. TAKING THE EDGE OFF: If your cat gets extremely stressed at the vet’s office then you might want to consider some natural alternatives to help take the edge off. Products such as Rescue Remedy and/or tryptophan based nutraceuticals can be quite effective at decreasing your cat’s stress levels if given prior to the visit. For more extreme cases, you may want to discuss with your veterinarian the possibility of giving a mild sedative prior to your visit in order to make the appointment go as smooth as possible. Hopefully, these few tips will make your next visit to the veterinarian less stressful for your cat and yourself.

HAWK HILL IN HIGH PARK

02

03

Have you been to Hawk Hill in High Park? Did you know it is a perfect spot to see the migrating birds as they fly right over your head. Tim Mccarthy a member of the Toronto Ornithological Club, along with a dozen or so hard-core stalwart Hawk Watchers started the RaptorWatch which began September 1st and goes until the end of November. They meet every day around 9:30 in the morning and will be there until mid-afternoon. Tim said “anyone who does not go to Hawk Hill at High Park in mid- to late September is missing one of Nature’s most amazing spectacles. There are numerous migrating raptors to see over the two-three month autumn count period, but none are as numerous and spectacular as the Broad-winged Hawks because they move at once in kettles of up to 300 birds on a good day.” Hope to see you there!
