CANADA TURNS
I50
WHAT DOES THE LOGO REPRESENT? The logo is composed of a series of diamonds, or “celebratory gems”, arranged in the shape of the iconic maple leaf. The four diamonds at the base represent the four original provinces that formed Confederation in 1867: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Additional diamonds extend out from the base to create nine more points—in total representing the 13 provinces and territories. The Canada 150 logo will become an evocative symbol and an enduring reminder of one of Canada’s proudest moments. The maple leaf motif is recognized at home and abroad as distinctively Canadian, and it fosters feelings of pride, unity and celebration. This unique and colourful design is simple enough to be drawn by children, and versatile enough to appear in color variations. The possible uses of the symbol are as unlimited as the spirit and imagination of the Canadian public.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
CR EAT E D B Y A R I A N A C U V I N F R O M TO R O N TO , the logo was the winning design in a nation-wide competition. Canadian students were invited to create the official Government of Canada’s logo for the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017 through a design contest that was held from December 5, 2014 until January 23, 2015. Ariana was chosen from a field of over 300 eligible entries. By participating in this contest, young Canadians had the opportunity to participate and contribute in an original way to this important milestone in Canadian history. Source: canada.pch.gc.ca

HISTORIC PARKDALE RESIDENT RESPONSIBLE FOR 19TH CENTURY ELECTRICAL REVOLUTION IN TORONTO by Jack Gibney • Parkdale Village Historical Society John Joseph Wright, a prominent Parkdale resident, resided at 14 Gwynne Avenue.
01
When JJ Wright arrived in Canada in 1870, the city of Toronto, (or rather York), was dependent on the steam engine for its power. After attending new technology lectures in Philadelphia - JJ brought his new knowledge home and was instrumental in creating the first ever electrical arcing streetlight, in 1879. He also built the first Canadian-made, electric generator in 1881 which was installed near the northeast corner of Yonge and King streets, it powered twenty arc lamps. JJ, the original founder of the Toronto Electric Light Company, also partnered with financial backer Henry Mill Pellatt, to install an additional 50 arcing street lights to service York Town. The first electric streetcar utilizing an overhead trolley pole is also one of his creations, but sadly he never patented the concept. Eventually the installation of high tension towers brought inex-pensive hydroelectric power from Niagara to Toronto. This revolutionary new source of electrici-ty dramatically reduced the price of power, and out competed operations like his.
02
03
Eventually JJ Wright faded into obscurity after 35 years of electrical pioneering. Wright Avenue in Roncesvalles Village stands in honour of his memory.

In December of 2015, Paris hosted the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference or COP 21 in which, 196 representing countries or territorial parties, agreed upon an international commitment to reduce the effects of climate change. As a result, world wide education regarding strategies has increased in schools, communities and within governing parties. Earth Hour, created a decade ago, pays homage to this cause because it is a global, symbolic gesture to encourage people to power down for an hour, in order to show world wide support for environmental stewardship. The ritual of dimming lights is a nod towards validating climate change. The gathering of people together is a meaningful, peaceful demonstration
o f w i l l i n g n e ss t o co l le c t i ve ly safeguard the planet now, for future generations to enjoy. Besides all that, Earth Hour is actually fun! This year Earth Hour is on Saturday March 25th, 8:30 - 9:30 pm. All across Ontario, communities gather for candlelight walks or enjoy indoor celebrations in the dark, in fact Roncesvalles Village has once again extended an invitation to Parkdale Village to coordinate candlelight walks, so that the two groups meet up at the Roncesvalles Foot Bridge in Beaty Boulevard Parkette. The massing together of supportive communities is a feel good moment, that brings like minded people together. For more information: http://keepitin. wixsite.com/roncy-earth-hour

DELICIOUS DISH RECIPE
CHOCOLATE
BABKA BUNS
SERVING SIZE: Makes 12 NOTE: If I don’t have buttermilk, I mix the milk and lemon juice and let stand for 5 minutes, and voila... buttermilk!
This recipe is a hybrid of cinnamon rolls and a traditional chocolate babka. I love it because I use a “quick bread” method instead of using a traditional yeast dough making this a perfect weekday recipe!
INGREDIENTS • For the Dough • 3/4 cup cottage cheese (4% milk fat) • 1/3 cup buttermilk (or 1/3 cup milk and 1 tsp lemon juice) • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 2 oz (4 tbsp) unsalted butter, melted • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract • 9 oz (2 cups) unbleached all-purpose flour; more for rolling • 1 tbsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp table salt • 1/4 tsp baking soda F O R T H E F I L L I NG
• 3 tbsp (45 grams) unsalted butter, at room temperature • 1/4 cup (50 grams) granulated sugar • 8 ounces (225 grams) semisweet chocolate • Pinch of salt
DIRECTIONS S TEP 01
Heat oven to 350˚F and generously grease a 12-muffin tin. S TEP 02
Mix the Egg Wash ingredients in a small bowl, set aside S TEP 03
Prepare Filling First: If your chocolate is in large bars, roughly chop it. Then, you can let a food processor do the rest of the work, pulsing the chopped chocolate with the salt, sugar until the chocolate is very finely chopped with some parts almost powdery. Add butter and pulse machine until it’s distributed throughout the chocolate. Set mixture aside. Wash and dry the processor well. S TEP 04
Make the Dough: In the food processor, combine the cottage cheese, buttermilk, sugar, melted butter, and vanilla. Process until smooth, about 10 seconds. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda and pulse in short bursts just until the dough clumps together (don’t over process). The dough will be soft and moist. S TEP 05
Scrape the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it with floured hands 4 or 5 times until smooth. With a rolling pin, roll the dough into a 12" x 15" rectangle. S TEP 06
Sprinkle the filling mixture over the the dough and pat gently into the surface.
EG G WA SH
S TEP 07
• 1 egg • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) heavy cream or milk
Starting at a long edge, roll up the dough jelly-roll style. Pinch the seam to seal, and leave the ends open.
CAROLYN COHEN
With a sharp serrated knife, gently saw the roll into 12 equal pieces (I like to cut in half first and cut each half in half again and cut 3 slices for every quarter). Place each piece, cut side up, in the prepared muffin tin. Brush with egg wash.

S TEP 09
Bake until golden brown and firm to the touch, 20-25 minutes. Set the pan on a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes. Run a spatula around the inside of each muffin cup to loosen any sticky bits and then remove buns to a rack to finish cooling.

Help Save Lives and Keep Your Pets Healthy –
SPAY & NEUTER Your Pets !
S
paying and neutering your pets at an early age is
will be more likely to urinate in inappropriate places around
important both for keeping them healthy as well as to help control the pet population. The overpopulation of companion animals, particularly cats, is an ongoing problem in many communities across Canada and leads to unnecessary and avoidable suffering of thousands of animals. In just a few years, one female cat and her offspring can produce hundreds if not thousands of kittens. Every year 180,000 dogs and cats enter Canadian shelters, which is a staggering number. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that between 3-4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the Unites States, mainly as a result of pet overpopulation. Outdoor cats and feral cat populations can also cause devastating effects on local wildlife.
your home, as well as exhibit other unwanted behaviours.
Many health problems can be avoided by early spaying and neutering. For female dogs and cats, it is ideal to spay them before their first ‘heat’, which can typically occur as early as 7 months of age. Spaying before a first heat significantly reduces the risk of developing mammary cancer (similar to breast cancer), which is a life-threatening illness. Spaying at a young age can also significantly reduce the risk of illnesses such as pyometra (a life-threatening infection in the uterus), uterine and ovarian cancers. Neutering male cats before 7 months of age is also strongly recommended. Unneutered male cats after 7 months develop a foul odour in their urine and
Even with these slight variations in the appropriate age, there is clear evidence to show that sterilized pets live longer than intact pets (those that are not spayed or neutered). So let’s all do our part with helping to control the pet population and keeping our pets healthy by spaying and neutering!
The best time to neuter male dogs can vary depending on the size and breed of the dog. For large breed dogs (ie. Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Mastiffs, St. Bernards, etc.), some research indicates a possible increased risk of developing orthopedic abnormalities such as hip dysplasia if neutered at a young age (before 6 months of age). Most veterinarians now recommend waiting until 9-12 months of age to neuter large breed male dogs. There are new and ongoing studies looking at the best time to spay or neuter your pet and it is important to have a discussion with your veterinarian before making a decision.

MULAN Mulan is a beautiful senior cat dumped at a shelter when she needs a loving home the most. She is very affectionate and loves to lay and sleep on your lap while you watch TV. She isn’t very vocal - but when she does meow (usually for food) she has a funny raspy Siamese meow. She is front paw declawed (so
no scratching furniture). Mulan is 13 years old and bloodwork shows the start of kidney disease. She doesn’t need medications now, just a proper diet. She is good with other cats. If you are interested, please contact Team Cat Rescue at info@teamcatrescue.ca. Adoption Fee $75.
