COMMIT TO YOUR FIT
Strategies for a More Fit 2018 Here are some research based tips or starting the year off well. Know That Exercise=Increased Productivity
You may be concerned about taking time from your day to workout. Knowing that you will gain an increase in productivity post workout will help you justify the time. According to Harvard Business Review “our mental firepower is directly linked to our physical regime”. Exercise helps to improve concentration, enhance creativity, and boost memory. A study at Leeds University found that on days people exercise “their experience at work changes”. They are in a better mood and happier when they get home. Stop Viewing Fitness as a Luxury and Invest in Yourself Start off by setting a “mastery goal”. This means deciding to become the best you can be at a single task. It also means focusing on learning and developing competence. Choose something you want to develop proficiency in such as increasing your strength or playing a sport. Hire a Coach or Trainer, buy yourself some new equipment and clothing, or take lessons. You will gain a feeling of accomplishment as you continuously improve performance. People who focus on learning are less likely to procrastinate or give up.
Of course Fitness Pros always say to schedule your workout. The real trick is to commit to what you scheduled. Really commit and protect your workout time. And know that everything else in life will seem easier once you have exercised. You will be calmer, happier and more focused. At the start of each week block out your exercise time and pick the top three activities you are going to prioritize. If you are a morning person get your workout in before you start the day. Get Organized Sometimes it’s the little things that can make the difference. Like getting your gear together in advance. If you’re going to the gym on Monday and Wednesday, you’ll need 2 tops, 2 bottoms, 2 pairs of socks and shoes. Get everything in your bag ready and place at your door or under your desk at work. A pro tip: pack protein bars in case you get hungry after work or on your way home. Plan For Peak Energy If you’re not someone who bounds out of bed in the morning, you’re not likely to feel excited about an early morning workout. So figure out when you’re most likely to be in an exercise frame of mind. Maybe midday is your sweet spot. Or you enjoy working off the stress of the day after work. Be intentional about your schedule. Understand when you’re at your best. It will make it fun for you to keep coming back. Work Out With a Friend or Make Friends at your Gym Having workout buddies can be huge for motivation. It not only keeps you accountable for showing up, but it’s more fun. Research shows that when there is a sense of community at a gym people are more likely to be consistent. Even If Time is Limited, Still Go Time is often the reason why people skip exercise. Left to the end of the day and with so much else to do it seems to get neglected. Think about prioritizing your activity and making sure you grab time. And even if you are short on time just focus on higher payoff workouts. You can get a lot done in a short amount of time. The key is to stay focused and maintain a high intensity throughout the session. Check in with a Snap Fitness Trainer on how to do this. torontohighpark@snapfitness.com

PROFILE
WITH SARAH DOUCETTE WHO ARE YOU?
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST JOY OR SATISFACTION?
NAME: Sarah Doucette
On the personal side of my life, my family brings me my greatest joy. I love spending time with our children, as they grow up and spread their wings. They are very supportive when it comes to the hours I work, which often includes evenings and weekends. My garden brings me so much satisfaction when it comes to watching the spring bulbs. Plants and vegetables grow throughout the year and this is also my relaxation. On the work side of my life, my greatest joy is being able to help people with whatever their concern is, no matter how big or small it may seem. My greatest satisfaction is completing a project, which residents and I have worked on together.
BIRTHPLACE: Winchester, England WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Swansea CAREER: Toronto City Councillor for Ward 13
WHAT WOULD YOU DEEM YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? My greatest achievement is being elected Toronto City Councillor for Ward 13.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND PETS:
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT VERY FEW PEOPLE WOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU?
This year my husband and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. We have two wonderful children who are 27 and 22. Right now we have two recuse cats in our family, Bonnie and Clyde.
When I was young one of my first jobs was pumping gas for the boats in Yarmouth Harbor on the Isle of Wight, helping my brother who was the Harbor Master.
8 • COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU DO FOR FUN? I make my own jams and jellies with produce grown in my garden.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? You can get more with honey than with vinegar.
IF YOU COULD POSSESS ONE SUPER-HUMAN POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? One thing I learned early on as a Councillor is there are never enough hours in the day! I would love the ability to stretch time to allow for a couple more activities (or even just a good night’s sleep!)
WHAT DOES THE WORD COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU? When neighbours/friends/organizations/faiths come together to listen, respect, collaborate, support, work together and watch out for each other on projects, issues or in time of need.
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? My mother, who passed away in 2006, inspires much of who I am and what I do. My parents divorced when I was 5 and my brother and I lived with our mother in a loving home. She worked outside of the home, was there when anyone asked for help, always put others before herself. She brought us up equally, being able to cook, mow the lawn, repair the car, sew on buttons, but most important, to be independent and stick to our values.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE VACATION SPOT? Sometimes my back garden but I also love visiting my family in England.
IF THE WHOLE COMMUNITY WERE LISTENING, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM? Be kinder to one another. We can accomplish a lot when we are willing to listen and work together.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME? My favourite movie is Forest Gump.
WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? Guess I can’t say politicians? My family and friends, the cats, British comedies, and sometimes just life in general.
