BLOOR BY THE PARK BIA & AREA

“There are still Hydro poles from when Bloor Street was once a Provincial highway and a partial facade from the Bloordale movie theatre still exists , but the original Bloor streetcar line and nearby Mineral Baths of High Park are no longer there.” Circa late 50’s - early 60’s, Bloor between Dundas West and Keele was bustling with independent family businesses, a major bread factory (ToastMaster Bread), and a prominent car dealership (Church Ford). After a large discount store named Towers (on Dundas W just south of Bloor), and the new Bloor subway line in 66, the thriving commercial atmosphere transformed. Walk by pedestrian traffic dwindled and within a few years most of the family businesses closed down. Bloor between Dundas W and Keele became a sort of “ghost town” and stayed that way until the 1980s. In 1987, a number of proactive businesses combined their efforts to establish a BIA.

Named Bloor by the Park BIA in honour of it’s charming adjacent Toronto landmark, The Board of Members set about getting new street signage, planters, banners, and hosted promotions. New businesses were attracted to the area and pedestrian traffic recouped, thanks to this dedicated group of volunteers.

Five years ago, the BIA launched an annual indoor fall festival, Toast to Autumn, which recently received a TABIA award of excellence. This community event unites friends, families and colleagues for a day of live music, food, art, children's activities and more. Today the BIA continues to fluctuate as intensification from local condominium developments create more commercial demand. Modern, trendy businesses are steadily flowing into this main street neighbourhood. The BIA has also benefited from development by way of Section 37 - in partnership with the City, Bloor by the Park will be increasing pedestrian sidewalk lighting to enhance community safety. These new lampposts will also be fitted for wifi capability, a first of its kind in Toronto!

Despite the area's challenges, Bloor by the Park is destined to become a major hub in the City of Toronto. Presently there are a bevy of restaurants and bars, health care options, and nearby grocery stores. There are two TTC stations and Metrolinx GO and UP are within walking distance. Because the district is situated by High Park it is a perfect balance between nature's tranquility and a thriving urban lifestyle.

CANDLELIGHT WALK FOR

EARTH HOUR by Karyn Klaire Koski, an Earth Hour Leader

On Saturday March 25th two Village walks started at the beginning of Earth Hour; one group walked west along Queen Street in Parkdale and the other headed south down Roncesvalles Avenue. Half an hour later they met up at the intersection of King, Queen, Roncesvalles and The Queensway. They then gathered near the Pedestrian Foot bridge in Beaty Boulevard Parkette. Shout outs were heard by organizers with brief addresses by MPP Cheri Di Novo and MP Arif Virani. All along the way, walkers saluted participating businesses that chose to dim down and serve by candlelight. The weather was mild and the event was well attended. The crowd dispersed by the end of the now decade old, symbolic hour. This year the Parkdale | Roncesvalles Earth Hour Event was co promoted by Greenest City, the Parkdale Village BIA, the Roncesvalles Village BIA, RoncyWorks, and Climate Action Canada. Organizers used the gathering to kickstart a deeper commitment to local action by announcing the founding of Green14, a green neighbours group for Ward 14. We used to drink Valpolicella quite a few years back and recently came across one you mentioned on one of your shows Negrar Ripasso, which we very much enjoyed. I’d like to know a little more about this wine and the region. Thank you Wine Ladies! - Jackie

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Jackie, Vino from Veneto... love the wines, love the region! Valpolicella is a wine that comes from the region of Veneto, located in the north east of Italy, home of the “big gun” Amarone and Romeo and Juliet!

The methodology of “ripasso” is an ancient wine making technique used for centuries in Valpolicella wineries, which gives the wine more structure, body and fuller flavour. How? Ripasso” literally means “re-passed”. After the fermentation process when producing an Amarone (which uses grapes that have been dried for several months.) the same skins of those dried grapes are then used for the production of Valpolicella Ripasso. These dried grape skins add body, character, complexity and a boost of alcohol strength. The Negrar Ripasso Valpolicella Classico is dark ruby red in colour, is seductive in the nose with lush blackberry and black licorice notes and a hint of spice Full bodied, velvety smooth, rich and with a good finish.

When a Valpolicella is classified as a Classico and done in the ripasso method, the wine reaches new heights in flavour, texture, body and aromatics! The designation of “classico” requires the grapes to come from the original Valpolicella production zone which was later adjusted in 1968. The great majority of grapes used are the same as for Amarone, the Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella varietals although small percentages of a few others are permitted.

Negrar is a cooperative winery founded in 1933 and located in the Classico area of Valpolicella. With 210 farmers/ partners producing typical grapes for Vapolicella on a surface of 530 hectares, they are one of the major producers of Amarone, Valpolicella and Ripasso wines.

Most of us have seen or eaten (or tried to make) cauliflower pizza crusts, mostly yielding unsuccessful results. They don’t taste great and definitely do not resemble pizza at all. You can stop at this one! You will most likely fool the pizza lovers at your table. It even picks up like pizza! You can make this completely gluten-free if you swap the spelt flour for a gluten-free flour such as chickpea flour, gluten-free oat flour or an all-purpose gluten-free flour.

• 1 small cauliflower, florets only, 4 finely riced level cups* • 1/2 cup (60gm) spelt flour (or any flour you like) • 1/2 cup (40gm) almond meal/flour • 1 egg, beaten • 1/2 tsp garlic powder • 1 tsp kosher salt • 1/2 cup (60-65gm) finely grated mozzarella cheese • 2 tbsp olive oil

Preheat oven to 500˚F and place the oven rack on the second from the lowest position. Heat a cast iron flat top sheet or a cookie sheet (lined with foil if you wish) in the oven as it preheats. STE P 02

Measure 4 cups of riced cauliflower* in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 4 minutes, stopping halfway to toss. When cool enough to handle, squeeze the liquid out of the cauliflower using paper towels. Allow the cauliflower to cool a little before adding the egg and cheese.

Add the two flours, salt, garlic powder and stir well. Add the egg and cheese and work the dough with your hands so that it is all evenly distributed.

*to “rice” the cauliflower, place the florets in the food processor fitted with the steel blade. Pulse the cauliflower until it resembles rice.

Carefully remove the sheet from the oven, place it down on a heatproof surface. Brush the sheet with the olive oil. Spread the cauliflower mixture in a large oval, making a lip, like a “pizza crust edge.” I will spread it as much as I can with my hands (it is hot), then sometimes put a piece of parchment on top of the flattened cauliflower and using a rolling pin, roll over the parchment to make even thinner, then make a nice raised edge.

heryl Antao-Xavier’s book of poetry Bruised But Unbroken takes us on a deep, soul searching journey through the ups and downs of life. As she reflects on her journey, at times heart-wrenching, we can’t help but reflect on ours. A thorough reading takes us away from the petty details of our lives and into our common humanity as men and women, parents, immigrants, Canadians, and people. From the many tributes to her adopted Canada and into distant cultures, we recognize our childhoods, our failures and successes in this contemporary and timely collection. Bruised but Unbroken is a revised version to encompass more of the Unbroken element, less on the Bruised, and according to AntaoXavier, written for bruised spirits trying to survive and move on. The book does that with themes of growth, nature, belonging, sadness, overcoming, and finally acceptance and love. It’s sprinkled throughout with Haiku and photos, and divided into sections of War and Peace, Vignettes of Life and Mind Shift.

Antao-Xavier, a Canadian by choice for twenty five years, describes herself as a learner with the goal of discovering new voices, new material and inspiration. Her publishing company In Our Words Inc. looks for diverse voices and new material. She’s helped many writers publish their debut work of poetry, fiction and playwriting. Her message to would-be poets is to let the expression come through. Show your experience and let the reader make up their own mind about it. Don’t hit the reader over the head with the message. On Saturday March 4th, Children from the City of Toronto’s Keele Community Centre’s 18 Week Theatre Program, performed at Bishop Morocco, for proud parents and adoring fans. Faby Bet Payumo, the community recreation programmer at Keele Community Centre declared the event a success and intends the to continue such programs in the future. Over 50 Students from various dance, voice and cheerleading programs appeared in the Disney adaptation that was written by Musical Theatre Director, Dakota Randall. The Show Must Drag On was a charity event held on March 23rd at El Convento Rico on 750 College Street, Toronto. The event was put on by 15 special events management students of George Brown College who must plan and execute a public event as their final class assignment for Event Operations II in the fourth semester of the program. All the money collected from this event went to two charities, one being the George Brown Scholarship Fund, and the second was a team choice charity, which went to Egal. Egal is a Canadian based charity that is trying to end the violence and discrimination towards the LGBTQ community and helps to promote all human rights.

The team started planning this event close to the end on last November and came out with an event like no other that the event management program of George Brown has ever seen. We invited 4 drag queens that are connected with Matteo Cassano's Icons. These performers have been in the business for 10 years to 25 years. Along with these lovely performers, our team opened the stage to two queens a little newer to the spot light. The theme of the event, 'Women of the Ages', was reflected in all the performances using iconic women from all ages to be celebrated through dance, music, and fashion.

All across Canada, dozens of community gardening groups select a late Winter Saturday to host seed exchanges. This popular, not for profit tradition is an opportunity to promote heirloom varieties of edible native and pollinator plants. Long time hosts, Parkdale’s Greenest City - a charitable organization dedicated to creating innovative projects that promote health, support community action, and enhance social and environmental justice - welcomed a large crowd of seed bartering seekers on March 4th at the Bonar - Parkdale Presbyterian Church Hall.

The spring clock is

‘TICK’ING! It wasn’t long ago that springtime for Toronto pet owners meant it was time to protect their furry family members from warm weather pests like fleas, heartworm and intestinal parasites. Now, the list includes ticks, which have gradually been spreading northeast across North America and are being found in ever increasing numbers in our city.

WHAT A R E T IC K S ? Ticks are 8-legged external parasites that belong to the same family as spiders. There are several species found in Southern Ontario, and their life cycle includes blood-feeding nymphs (no bigger than the head of a pin) and larger, more easily detected adults.

WHY S H O U L D W E P ROTEC T O U R P ETS ? Aside from the obvious ‘creepy’ factor, one tick species of concern from a public and animal health perspective is the black-legged ‘deer tick’. In some parts of the city black-legged ticks have been found that are infected with Borellia burgdorferi bacterium, otherwise known as Lyme disease. At Dundas West Animal Hospital, we have certainly seen cases in dogs that were acquired either in Toronto or surrounding areas like cottage country. Symptoms of Lyme disease in dogs can include fever, lethargy, joint pain or stiffness, and weakness. Though less common, some infections can result in nephritis, or inflammation and damage to kidneys. Fortunately, there are treatments available that can do a good job of warding off ticks and even prevent them from latching on to our 4-legged companions. Lyme disease can also be treated with antibiotics if it is detected early. If you find a tick on your pet, it is important to talk to your veterinarian about a simple blood screening test to rule out exposure to Lyme. Cats are less susceptible to infection but cases have been reported, so this is one more reason to keep your cat indoors for their protection against the many dangers of outdoor adventure.

WHE N A R E O U R P E T S ( A ND U S) AT R ISK ? Ticks can survive for incredibly long periods in cold temperatures, and they will start ‘questing’ for a blood meal at any time when

temperatures are above 4° Celsius. Questing refers to the tick’s ability to reach out and grab onto any moving object passing by. It then uses its mouthpiece to burrow into the ‘host’ for a blood meal. So even though we have typically recommended that clients start tick prevention around the middle of March, this past winter has seen temperatures higher than 4 degrees during every month and it is probably time to think about using year-round protection.

WHERE ARE T I CKS MOST ACT I VE? Researchers at the University of Guelph are seeking to better understand what factors are contributing to the spread of the blacklegged tick and Lyme disease in Ontario. Dr. Katie Clow, a veterinarian and principal researcher working on the project, notes that these ticks spend most of their lives in leaf litter on forest floors. Also, since ticks only feed once per life stage, the highest risk times are spring to early summer, when adults and nymphs are questing for a blood meal, and then again in the fall as nymphs mature. As Dr. Clow says, “Even though ticks pose a risk, it’s still important to enjoy nature with your pet! Stick to marked trails, and keep your dog out of the brush where the ticks wait for a host. Then make sure to do a good tick check on yourself and your dog when you get home”. The longer an infected tick is attached and feeding, the greater the chance of Lyme disease being passed on. Having a once-yearly Lyme screening test performed by your veterinarian and considering a tick preventative are other good strategies to make sure your beloved companion stays healthy, since the small nymphs can be particularly hard to find amongst all that fur. So, now you are armed with knowledge and you can make sure your dog is ready to enjoy the warm temperatures and delights of spring!
