GENERATOR PROJECT: LADIES WINE & CHEESE

Inspired by the East Coast Black out of 2003, Toronto based GeneratorProject.org campaigned through media, for people to come together, power down by forgoing technology and instead - spend face to face time with their neighbours. Generator Project is all about fostering community goodwill. Answering the call to participate and attracted by the phrase of powering down - Roncy’s Earth hour Leader; Karyn Klaire Koski, jumped at the chance to register for the event. She and three other neighbourhood Moms had already been contemplating an event that would introduce women within the confines of Indian Grove, Indian Valley Crescent, Ridout, Indian Road, Howard Park and Parkside Drive. Karyn, who is also a writer/ producer - already had individual friendships with Maria an ER Dr, Fran a College Professor and Katrin a product development strategist, but they as a group, had never really met, despite living just houses away. An email chain was sent out, 50 flyers were distributed door to door and women were asked to tell all the neighbourhood ladies they knew. In total twenty women showed up, most meeting for the very first time on Friday September 23. Each woman brought a treat to the table, a bottle of wine and wore a name tag that stated the year she had moved in. The project brought together women who had lived in the area for years, new comers, mothers with young children and moms with teens of babysitting age. It was a successful evening with many new friendships forged.

CYCLE 4 ST. JOE’S 01

02 On October 2nd, more than 265 riders came out to Cycle 4 St. Joe’s at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre. Together, they raised more than $200,000 to support critical needs at St. Joseph's Health Centre. The many teams of St. Joe's doctors, staff, grateful patients and west-end neighbours persevered through some rain and came out on top, tackling the rolling hills of Milton for the cause. A big thank you to co-lead sponsors Mattamy Homes and Spidertech, route sponsors BLG, CIBC, and Gib-San Pool and Landscape Creations, as well as all of the spirited riders and donors, this year’s Cycle 4 St. Joe’s was a great success!

SAVOURYSWEET APPETIZERS WELCOME GUESTS

Creamy, buttery brie is always a crowd-pleaser. Warming brie helps bring out its flavour, while pairing it with Canadian apples is a great way to combine some of the best that harvest season has to offer. This appetizer recipe has decadent maple-bacon flavouring that is unique enough to serve when entertaining and easy for any host to prepare. All the ingredients can be found at your local Walmart, making this dish a cost-effective appetizer that's sure to please.

BAKED BRIE

WITH MAPLE-BACON APPLES Serves: 6

INGREDIENTS • 1 apple, unpeeled, cored, and cut into thin wedges • 2 slices thick-cut bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

DIRECTIONS STE P 01

Cut apple into thin wedges. Heat a medium frying pan on medium-high. Add bacon and cook 3 to 6 minutes or until crispy. Remove from pan using a slotted spoon. Drain on paper towels. Remove and discard half of fat from pan. STE P 02

Add apples to bacon fat in pan. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook while stirring often, about 6 to 10 minutes or until apples are very soft. Add reserved bacon and 1 tbsp maple syrup.

• 2 tbsp maple syrup, divided

STE P 03

• 350g wheel of brie

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a pie dish with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Place brie on top of foil and poke holes in it with a skewer. Spoon apple mixture on top. Bake until cheese is very soft, about 10 to 15 minutes. Drizzle with remaining maple syrup and sprinkle with chives. Serve immediately with crackers.

• Crackers or sliced bread • Chopped chives (optional)

So, you want to be a vet...

I

f you ask an elementary school classroom of kids what they wish to be when they grow up, you are likely to find a handful who respond “a veterinarian”. While I might be biased, I’d agree it is the best job in the world.

But because the number of people who try to become veterinarians far surpasses the available spots in veterinary colleges, it is not easy to get here. I hope this article will be useful for those of you out there who are thinking of, or who know someone who is thinking of becoming a veterinarian. The following are some tips that may help you. ACADEMICS ARE EVERYTHING Actually, there are many other qualities aside from high grades that will help someone stand out from the crowd during the application process, including good communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. However, without high grades in university, it is simply not possible to gain admission into veterinary school. I would encourage anyone with a strong interest in science and a love for animals, to buckle down in high school and start paving the way for success in university. Check into the application requirements for the Ontario Veterinary College, and be sure to take all of the science and math academiclevel courses in high school. The four-year veterinary program is tough in terms of the volume of material covered, and once you get in, you will need to buckle down more than ever! EXPERIENCE, EXPERIENCE, EXPERIENCE! If you have the marks required to gain an interview for vet school admission, you will need to have a good understanding of what “the job” actually entails. Being a vet is certainly not for everyone, as it can be quite challenging at times. While small animal practice is the most popular choice among veterinary graduates, there are a myriad of job options for veterinarians. There is a need for veterinarians in large animal practice, and there are also specialty areas one can pursue similar to human doctors, including surgery, clinical medicine, ophthalmology, dentistry, dermatology, etc. I would encourage anyone interested in pursuing this profession to gain as many experiences with different veterinarians as possible. While I was sure I wanted to work in small animal practice after volunteering and assisting in several small animal hospitals during high school, it was during my undergraduate degree that I realized there were other

options that might interest me even more over the long term. I have since been pursuing further degrees in epidemiology (the study of disease at the population level) while continuing to thoroughly enjoy working as a small animal veterinarian in my neighbourhood. There are many options for veterinarians in the work force and it will help in the interview process if you have a thorough understanding of the veterinary profession as a whole, as well as the more challenging aspects that veterinarians face in the day-to-day. IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT ACADEMICS AND EXPERIENCE Interacting with lots of people is a huge part of a veterinarian’s work and everyone has to work hard together. The interest and ability to work as a team member is so important in this profession, so do whatever you can to augment these skills. Participating in extra-curricular activities, whether they be sports or arts related, will give you opportunities to work with others on a shared goal or interest. Sometimes these personal pursuits can also lead to alternate career choices and a back-up plan. I am so thankful that my hard work and perseverance paid off, and I “got to be a veterinarian.” Helping such amazing animal patients and their caring owners, and working with a wonderful veterinary team is absolutely the most rewarding profession for me. I am excited about what the future holds for the profession, as veterinarians have such important roles to play in society. So, if you think being a vet might be for you too, volunteer with veterinarians in different fields to explore all the options and make sure it truly is for you as your primary career goal. Then go for it, work hard, and hopefully your dream will come true too.
