DANCE-A-RAMA AT PARKDALE LIBRARY

On Saturday, October 22 from 11am until noon Parkdale Library held a Dance-A-Rama celebrating Library Settlement Partnerships. Over forty people came out to learn dance moves from around the world. HALLOWEEN FEST On Sunday October 30, The St. Joseph’s Health Centre held their annual Toronto West Halloween Fest. The day started with a 1km Costume Parade through the neighbourhood and ended at the main stage where Sharon and Bram entertained with all their favourites. The rain did not dampen anyone’s spirits as young and old sang and danced. There was so much to do such as Halloween arts and crafts and games and many treats to enjoy. It was a fun-filled day with proceeds going towards a kids only ward at St. Joe’s. Thank you one and all for your support!

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

During the holidays, it is easy to veer from a heart healthy diet and lifestyle. This can be made even more challenging when it comes to desserts. After all, who can say no to delicious baked goods from friends and family? When it comes to baking your own treats at home, incorporating a soft, non-hydrogenated margarine can help make cookies soft and chewy. Becel Buttery Taste margarine is made with a blend of oils, including canola and sunflower oils, and contains 80 per cent less saturated fat than butter. This holiday season, try this simple and delicious cookie recipe as your first step towards better-for-you baking:

CRANBERRY CHOCOLATE OATMEAL GRANOLA COOKIE

Prep time: 10 Minutes • Cook time: 25 Minutes • Makes: 84 Cookies

INGREDIENTS

Preheat oven to 375°F (190° C). Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in medium bowl; set aside.

• 2 1/4 cups (550 mL) all-purpose flour • 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt

Beat margarine with sugars in large bowl. Mix eggs and vanilla until blended.

Gradually add in flour mixture; beat just until blended. Add oats, cranberries, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, and mini chips.

• 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract

Drop mixture by the tablespoon on ungreased baking sheets, 2 inches (5 cm) apart. Slightly press each cookie down before baking. Bake 5 to 7 minutes or until edges are golden.

The holidays are a time for celebration, packed with parties and intimate gatherings. Make your next party an event to remember by crafting cocktails in tune with the season. Get creative with the warm spices and seasonal flavours in these delicious recipes.

HOT BUTTERED RYE

CANDY CANE COCKTAIL

Fight cooler temperatures with warmer drinks. This alternative to traditional hot buttered rum combines whisky with hot water and ginger liqueur in a heat-safe glass or mug. Use your Vitamix machine to create a decadent topping made with heavy cream and a touch of maple syrup. Garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Candy canes are only available on store shelves once a year, so take advantage of every chance you get to indulge in them. Perfect as a dessert cocktail, this sweet treat combines vanilla rum, white chocolate liqueur, and peppermint schnapps. Add a shot of each to a cocktail shaker full of ice, shake well, and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a candy cane or crushed candy cane rim.

GINGERBREAD MARTINI Gather some friends at your next holiday party to make gingerbread houses while you sip on gingerbread martinis. Prepare the martini glasses by chilling them in the freezer, then dip the rims in ginger liqueur and crushed ginger snaps. In a martini shaker filled with ice, combine ginger liqueur, vanilla citrus liqueur, coffee-flavoured rum, and a little honey and heavy cream. Shake well and pour. Garnish with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.

SPARKLING CHAMPAGNE SMOOTHIE Nothing says celebration like champagne. For a fun twist on a holiday toast, whip up a quick sparkling champagne smoothie. Combine your favourite fruit - fresh or frozen strawberries and peaches are yummy options - with yogurt and a pinch of nutmeg in your Vitamix machine and blend. something’s in the air

here is nothing a veterinarian dreads more during this time of year – and I am not talking about another US election debate or offensive Trump tweet. Autumn tends to show a disproportionate number of cats that present with urinary issues. Known collectively as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), this condition does not represent a single illness but rather a variety of diseases that affect the bladder and urethra of cats. It is most frequently noted in cats that are middle-aged, overweight, neutered, indoor with restricted access outside, eat a dry kibble diet, exhibit nervous/fearful/aggressive/stressed behaviour and are part of a multi-cat household. Although cats present with similar recognizable symptoms, there are many different underlying causes that require diagnostic testing in order to ensure appropriate treatment. COMMON CLINICAL SIGNS OF FLUTD Cats will show symptoms that include straining to urinate, frequent urination, blood in the urine, over grooming and urination outside the litterbox. If cats become obstructed or ‘blocked’, they will attempt to urinate but produce little or no urine and will often show signs of discomfort such as vocalizing, restlessness, decreased appetite, vomiting and lethargy. CAUSES, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF FLUTD Urinary Stones and Urethral Plugs are a relatively common cause – the two most common types of stones are ‘Struvite’ and ‘Calcium Oxalate’ stones. These are diagnosed via a urinalysis in order to identify underlying inflammation/infection/crystals as well as x-rays that will identify the number/size/location of the stones. Struvite stones are amenable to dissolution via specific urinary diets while Calcium Oxalate stones must be removed surgically. Both urinary stones as well as urethral plugs can cause partial/complete urinary obstruction which is very serious scenario as it is a life-threatening emergency and should receive urgent medical attention. Diagnosis is via physical exam, urinalysis, bloodwork and x-rays. Immediate decompression of the urinary bladder is necessary with a urinary catheter in order to relieve the pressure while hospitalization and IV fluid therapy is necessary in order to stabilize the patient. BACTERIAL INFECTIONS are also a relatively common cause and tend to be seen in older cats. They are diagnosed via urinalysis - often a urine culture & sensitivity is recommended to better determine the specific bacteria causing the infection and furthermore, to specify the most appropriate antibiotic treatment to minimize risks of bacterial resistance. CANCER is something we see less commonly as a cause of FLUTD but older cats are more predisposed. It is usually diagnosed via abdominal

ultrasound and treatment is commonly done through an oncologist. FELINE IDIOPATHIC CYSTITIS (FIC) is the most common cause of FLUTD. As the name implies, no specific underlying cause can be identified in these cases and it is known as a diagnosis of exclusion – only when all other common causes have been ruled out (via urinalysis, x-ray and abdominal ultrasound) can you make the FIC diagnosis. Effective treatments have been elusive but a combination of pain medications, behavioural medications, urinary foods and environmental enrichment have been shown to help. PREVENTION OF FLUTD We recommend that cats that have had previous episodes of urinary stones or plugs to continue on a urinary diet in order to minimize the chances of FLUTD recurrence. A greater proportion of wet food is also encouraged in order to increase moisture and water intake. •

Offer clean, fresh water at all times. Certain cats prefer drinking from glasses, water fountains or from a dripping tap.

Provide an appropriate amount of litterboxes (rule of thumb is # of cats in household + 1)

•

Ensure that litterboxes are cleaned frequently and placed in quiet, safe areas.

•

Minimize changes in the routine and enriching the environment (see https://indoorpet.osu.edu//cats for more information and ideas)

Although FLUTD is a frustrating condition, it is indeed something that can be managed with vigilant monitoring, diagnosis and treatment as well as preventative measures. Wishing you all good luck with your cats as well as the potential influx of Americans if Trump beats the odds.

HALLOWEEN PUMPKIN FUNDRAISER

02 On Saturday October 22 at the Sorauren Park Town Square there were pumpkins everywhere! Not only were there hundreds of pumpkins to choose from there was hot apple cider to keep you warm and face painting for the children. Hosted by The Friends of Sorauren Park and Chander Chaddah this fundraiser has raised close to $20,000.00 over the years, thanks to the generosity of all the neighbours of Roncesvalles Village. 100% of the proceeds donated have gone towards park improvements with this year’s donations going towards a new pizza oven for Sorauren Park.

Clear your gutters, street drains and traffic areas of leaf debris but consider leaving your Autumn leaves in landscaped beds and mulched leaves on lawns. Scientists world wide are urging home owners to adopt a more eco approach to how we can help create sustainable habitats for wee creatures like butterflies and beneficial insects and also, manufacturer our own healthy soil amendments. Left alone in garden areas, leaves decompose with the assistance of little creatures and fungi – eventually the process turns the leafy accumulation into humous rich, earthy leaf mould & compost. Besides, the insulating qualities of any blanketed organic matter, are known to protect and save delicate shrubs and perennials. Toronto winters get cold. Depleting the earth of its own potential goodness is like removing important bacterial flora from our own bodies. It just has to be replaced synthetically – use the real thing! Throughout America, the National Wildlife Federation is campaigning the merits against over meticulous environmental care. We as RoncyWorks members and Roncesvalles area neighbours, ought to recognize such leaf saving benefits by supporting leaf – non collection strategies ourselves because such action plans are pro supportive towards Environmental Protection.

Save your Back, Save a Buck! It goes without saying; less raking reduces the risk of muscular injury. But saving a buck? Imagine never having to purchase fertilizer, bags of garden loam or mulch again. By contributing to your own manufacturing of leaf mould, you will always have an economical abundance of nature’s bounty. That saves you money. Many savvy gardeners are utilizing the benefits of autumn leaves. Some use their lawnmowers or weed wackers to mulch leaves down so that they decompose faster. Left finely chopped on lawns, they deteriorate quickly and tend not to blow around. Some collect surplus leaves in an uncovered bin and wait for the process of time to do its work. Its really quite easy. I personally have raked my leaves onto my landscaped flower beds for years, every spring I note how much better the earth has become. If binned home leaf composting isn’t your thing, rely on The City of Toronto’s leaf collecting system but do it in the Spring after you, your garden and the insects have benefitted. Think of life in forests. No one rakes the accumulation of leaves, yet every spring decomposition has occurred because of the presence of beneficial fungi, insect life and the blanketing of snow. As new growth pushes through the leafy floor, the remainder of fallen leaves provide a rich mulch, that eventually breaks down and that process, is a never ending natural cycle – now take the forest example and apply it to your own garden. It’s simple, easy and free.

SORAUREN PARK

PUMPKIN PARADE

Every Nov. 1, the day after Halloween, the worldfamous Pumpkin Parade takes place at Sorauren Park. With close to 2,000 pumpkins on display in recent years, the Parade is a neighbourhood and even regional highlight of the season. From witches and cats, to politicians and world events, the artful jack-o-lanterns represent the spirit of Halloween and also the spirit of the times. Add your pumpkin to the parade. It starts at dusk, with the busiest times after dinner. There is no competition… but will your pumpkin get noticed? And what will be the dominant theme this year? U.S. election? Olympics? Shirtless prime ministers? Place your lit pumpkins along the inside edge of the path around the park. We are hoping to completely encircle the park this year, and we can do that by not doubling up on both sides of the path. Plus, if we get everyone moving in the same direction around the park (think pleasure skating rink), it should be even more enjoyable.

On Saturday October 22 in Cowan-Masarky Park and event was held by Tree for Me. Participants had already signed up at Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation where they were matched with the right tree to plant on their property. All trees are native to the area and sourced from local seed stock and were free. The workshop was run by Jess and Jess, Master students from the University of Toronto. They showed participants proper tree planting and tree care to grow a healthy and hearty tree.
