& WILD BIRDS The Riverwood Conservancy held their Annual Hot Chocolate & Wild Birds event on January 3rd and 4th, at the MacEwan Field Station. This free family fun activity delighted both young and old. Even with freezing temperatures the Chickadees came to feed out of your open palm filled with special bird seeds. Guests were treated to hot chocolate to warm up after their walk then they made bird treats with popcorn, cranberries, carrots and apples, which were hung on the trees outside.

MORPHOLOGY
On Sunday, January 14, the doors of the Lakeview Water Treatment Plant were open for a very unique and special exhibit, capturing constructed coastal wetlands through the work of eleven local photographers. The show documents the initial stages of the newly created wetlands in Lakeview. This revitalization project is the realized dream of visionary Ward 1 Councillor, Jim Tovey, who said, “It is the first ecosystem that has ever been built in Lake Ontario in the GTA ever.” This not to be missed exhibit will be on display at Mississauga’s Great Hall in March.

JIM TOVEY Jim Tovey will be remembered as Ward One Councillor, 2008 President and Founder of the Lakeview Ratepayers Association, 2009 Citizen of the Year, 2012 Queen’s Jubilee Medal recipient, defender of the Great Lakes, musician, carpenter, politician, champion of the artistic community, small business and the environment. In describing Jim these words come to mind: Visionary, Creative, Passionate, Determined, Curious, Approachable and Humble. Who won’t remember Jim saying, “Ward Onederful,” “How cool is that?” and “We’ll see.” We will always picture Jim, iPad in hand, passionately describing his vision of the Lakeview waterfront redevelopment. Jim’s impact on our community will live on for generations to come. Indeed a great man.

JURIED SHOW OF FINE ARTS January 11th was the opening reception for VAM40, which featured works by 40 emerging and established artists that live and work in Ontario. This year, the jury had to review 160 submissions from artists across Ontario and selected 40 finalists, which highlighted a wide range of creative expression. The Art Gallery of Mississauga and Visual Arts Mississauga collaborated to present this annual exhibition.

On January 15th, the official Grand Opening of the Active Adult Centre of Mississauga was held in the morning, at the Centre’s new location in the Central Parkway Mall. The former Passport Office space has been beautifully transformed into a dynamic and vibrant place for seniors to attend all sorts of programs from zumba, yoga, fitness to jewellery making, music classes and an Internet Café just to name a few.

elf named Leilah (Naoomi Rapace) who intends to use its powers to resurrect the Dark Lord, who will cause death and destruction and enslave anyone who survives. Now it's up to Ward and Jakoby to figure out what to do with the ancient relic, which isn’t easy when there's no one they can trust.
BY BRANDON REID etflix's newest and most expensive movie to date, Bright, takes place in an alternate Los Angeles where orcs, elves, fairies and humans all co-exist and have co-existed since the beginning of time. Now if this makes you think that this will be an in-depth epic like Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, your expectations will be crushed. Think more contained old school buddy-cop film mixed with fairytale situations and that's exactly what Bright is. But be warned, this isn't your kids fairytale. There's coarse language, blood, violence, brief nudity and did I mention coarse language? Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch, Suicide Squad) with a screenplay by Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein) Bright follows Officer Scott Ward (Will Smith) and his partner, Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton) who is the first orc police officer and hated by both orcs and humans, as they embark on a routine patrol only to run into a quiet, scared elf named Tikka (Lucy Fry) who is in possession of a magic wand; an ancient relic that is very rare and can only be touched by a select few that are called “brights.” If someone other than a bright touches the wand, they pretty much go boom. We soon find out that the wand belongs to a more powerful dark

The effects are well done, the action is solid, the humour between Will Smith and Joel Edgerton is fantastic and the story leaves enough unanswered questions to leave you wanting more (did somebody say sequel?). Not the best movie of 2017 by any means but if you were as disappointed with Suicide Squad as I was, David Ayer totally redeems himself with Bright.

On Saturday January 27th, The Princess Ball was held at Le Treport Wedding and Convention Centre. It was a magical afternoon for the whole family, as little Princesses and Princes dressed up and attended a real royal ball. There was a selfie booth, all sorts of craft tables, face painting, special royal treats, a magic show, story time and the Fairy Tale Princesses sang and danceed with everyone. The afternoon provided an opportunity to make a difference for those living with Cystic Fibrosis.

nergetic, loud, never understated and always funny, Canadian comedian Nathan Macintosh, is quickly becoming one of the names to know in comedy. Most recently making his network television debut on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on CBS, Conan on TBS, making a guest appearance on season 7 of Mr. D and Just For Laughs All Access, 2017 was no doubt a great year for the comedian from Halifax. I think when I was about 10 years old. My mom would always watch stand-up when I was growing up. She loved Rodney Dangerfield, George Carlin and Sam Kinison, so I saw them at a young age and thought it was the coolest thing ever. As I got older, I was writing jokes at the back of class getting in trouble. When you know you want to be a comedian, chemistry doesn’t matter.
Honestly, I love living in New York. I always kind of wanted to be here while growing up in Halifax. New York, for some reason, seemed like a really cool city. I could have never moved from Halifax directly to New York though. Living in Toronto scared me! The Subway was horrifying. I’ve been in New York for around 6 years now and I still love it. It’s a weird place though, one day a Chihuahua was left on my doorstep and I kind of just adopted it.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW COMEDIAN JUST STARTING OUT? A good piece of advice someone gave me years ago was you can always get something too early, but you can never get something too late. That really made sense to me. Also, really focus on what it is you’re doing and not worry about what other comedians are doing.
WHAT PREPARATION GOES INTO AN APPEARANCE ON THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT AND ALSO CONAN? The whole experience is pretty stressful, actually. Prior to the appearance, you were constantly going over the set with the bookers of the show. For The Late Show, I ran the set five times that week in New York with the Booker and we would always go over the material. He told me what words could stay or go. Then the night before being on the show, you don’t sleep really. I was up super early looking over what I was going to say, making sure I had it down and just drinking coffee. I was so tired but needed to stay awake.
HOW DID BEING A BARISTA AT STARBUCKS PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR COMEDIC CAREER? I actually worked at the Starbucks at Queen and John across from MuchMusic (MUCH), in Toronto, for years. Every day I was trying to make customers laugh, put a smile on their face. I ended up getting on this show that MuchMusic was doing called ‘Celebrity Siblings.’ I played Justin Timberlake’s little brother. The joke was that he was broke and yelling at his famous brother for never helping him. It was me on Spadina squeegeeing windows saying “Justin, how could you let this happen to me!” 20 • C O M M U N I T Y C A P T U R E D . C A
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIG BREAK? When I was 21, I was in this contest where new comedians who had been doing stand-up for 2 years or less competed. They took five of us and put us all on the Comedy Network and the winner got $5,000 and a chance to do a short film with the Comedy Network. I won that, which was amazing. That was the first cool thing that happened that made me feel like I was going in the right direction.
WHO ARE YOUR COMEDIC HEROES? Definitely Sam Kinison. His early stuff is so cool. He was such a unique character, nobody was doing what he was doing. Then there’s George Carlin, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle. I do shows at the Comedy Cellar in New York and I’ve been there when Dave Chappelle performed and he was in the room when I performed, which was literally the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN STORE FOR 2018? I will be traveling a lot more than I have before. I’ll be going to China to do some shows, which I’m really excited about. I’m also looking to do a cartoon. I have a few ideas that I want to try out.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT CANADA? Canada is a lot more chill, a lot calmer than the U.S. Every time I land in Canada, I have a sense of relief. After living in America for a while now, Canada seems like a vacation. I’d like to one day have a house in Nova Scotia. I’d like to end up where I started, one day.
