The Marques d’Elegance “Life in the Fast Lane” Gala was a one of a kind event held at the prestigious Twenty7 Automobile Club on Saturday, August 26th. It celebrated all things luxurious: delicious food, premium wine & spirits, live music and a chance to see some of the world’s most incredible supercars. The event proceeds went to United Way Halton & Hamilton to help build strong communities and improve lives locally. It truly was a luxury car event like no other.

Following almost 2 years of planning, concept development and execution the Fine Arts Society of Milton's (FASM) mural for the Milton District Hospital is complete, installed and ready to be seen by the public. The massive mural, which is in 3 parts and measures 33ft x 8ft, rests prominently in the new beautifully appointed foyer of the hospital. This labour of love created by 32 of 150 FASM members attests to the Society's mission to bring art to the community. The project was spearheaded by Ursula McDermid, President of FASM, Nancy Cuttle, Sculptor and FASM Director and Tina Newlove, Concept Artist and FASM Director, all of whom worked closely with hospital officials. More than 1000 volunteers hours contributed to the success of this exciting endeavour. The mural is entitled “Milton's Nature Warms the Soul” and depicts the escarpment as a backdrop of the four seasons of Milton in vibrant hues and tones. The meditative quality of this creation fits well into the hospital environment and will bring solace and comfort to patients,visitors and staff. The image will be available in the form of framed prints, bags, mugs and numerous other items for admirers to take home and enjoy. 01 On Saturday, August 19th, RCB Insurance hosted a Customer Appreciation Day at the Milton Mall. A fire truck and police car were there to explore and sound the sirens. Hamburgers and hot dogs were available, as well as lots of RBC trinkets such as Frisbees and bubbles. It was a fun party in the parking lot for the whole family to meet all the wonderful staff at RBC Insurance.

SKILLS DAY On Saturday, August 26th, the Lions Sport Park was a flurry of activity all day for the Soccer Skills Day and BBQ. GIRLS INC.

Girls Inc. of Halton is a non-profit charitable organization, and is the first Canadian affiliate of US-based Girls Inc. (www.girlsinc.org). Girls Inc. of Halton has provided mentoring to over 5,000 girls in Halton since 2002.

All Girls Inc. of Halton programming is research-based and age-appropriate, encouraging girls to master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Our programs develop self-esteem and leadership skills in an environment where similarities and differences between girls are valued, respected and celebrated. This summer, Girls Inc. of Halton expanded our operation by offering programming in French at Du Chêne Primary School in Oakville. We also launched our first ever summer day camp for girls aged 6 to 14, at Our Lady Victory School in Milton. The summer day camp pilot program was a huge success, reaching over 70 girls over four weeks. In order to keep the camp accessible to all girls, the cost to parents for camp ranged from $75 $125/week, with several sponsored spaces available at no cost to parents. Our organization plans to expand this summer camp to other municipalities in Halton for summer 2018.

The Celebration Luncheon, held at Spencer’s at the Waterfront Burlington on Thursday, August 31st marked the end of GIH’s summer fundraising campaign. The luncheon served as a networking session for almost 80 business professionals. The keynote speaker was Dr. Maral Ouzounian, of Toronto’s University Health Network and only female cardiac surgeon on her eight-member team. Professional panelists included Maria Locker, CEO Mompreneur, Karine Morin, Ontario Justice of the Peace, Fareen Samji, Burlington author and entrepreneur and Shopper’s Drug Mart SVP, Theresa Firestone. During the event Theresa Firestone presented Girls Inc. of Halton with a $15,000 donation! First of all, congratulations on your daughter’s up-coming marriage! As for the wine and cheese party, we suggest you go with a small selection of both white and red wines to enjoy with your cheeses.
FOR THE RED On the lighter side, wines made from the Gamay grape or Pinot Noir are always good candidates pairing well with an ample variety of cheeses, from fresh or aged goat’s milk cheeses to the bloomy rind. A full-bodied red wine, a Cabernet or Cabernet blend, Shiraz or even a Port, are good partners for aged Cheddars, Gouda, Gruyère, Pecorino or Manchego. So many cheeses, so many wines!
STARTING WITH THE WHITES A sparkling wine, particularly given the occasion, would serve doubleduty as a versatile wine to pair with a variety of cheeses, as well as offer a celebratory note. Dry sparkling wines pair nicely with double or triple cream cheeses such as Brie and Camembert and also match well with medium intensity blue cheeses such as Gorgonzola Dolce, one of our favorites! Their versatility extends further to hard aged cheeses such as the Parmigiano-Reggiano or Piave. Other white wines to include would be Sauvignon Blanc and/or an Albarino for something a little different, both aromatic, dry and crisp, both great with goat’s milk cheeses.

Compare photo 1, taken from a standing height, with photo 2, taken while kneeling down to the subject’s eye level. In some settings, getting below the level of the action, such as when performers are on stage, may produce a powerful perspective, as in photo 3.

GO HIGH Go High should also be considered, as long as it is safe! Everyday opportunities include balconies (photo 4, with special permission from Koerner Hall), benches, grandstands, ladders, steps and staircases. NORTHERN SHOWDOWN
CAR & TRUCK SHOW Saturday, August 26th, was a beautiful sunny day to spend with friends and family at Country Heritage Park for the Northern Showdown Car & Truck Show. There were many different Food Trucks to choose from, as well as car and clothing vendors. Some games included Car/Truck Limbo and the kids Lego building contest. All funds raised at the show went to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
