Carroll Baker performed as part of the opening night gala on October 4th 1997, and it is fitting that Canada’s “First Lady of County Music” returns to the stage at River Run Centre on October 4th to help mark 20 years of world-class entertainment.

The Miijidaa Family Series features music, magical theatre and acrobats starting with the Mini Pop Kids. Take a magical journey with B -The Underwater Bubble Show, The Peking Acrobats and Scrap Arts Music round off the series.

When it comes to music, the Richardson GMP Music Series serves up a variety of acts including one of Canada’s finest jazz singers Emilie-Claire Barlow. Also included are the Sons of Serendip, Tartan Terrors, The Cowboy Junkies, Gord Bamford, an unforgettable double bill with Digging Roots and Dione Taylor.

Canadian music icon Tom Cochrane with Red Rider will be coming in March and Kim Mitchell closes the series.

GUELPH'S OWN DYNAMIC DUO FOR FINANCIAL PLANNING

KEN WHITE OF GUELPH FINANCIAL & PETER CURTIS OF DISABILITY TAX RESULTS, PARTNER TOGETHER TO CREATE AWARENESS AND HELP CHANGE PEOPLE'S LIVES Ken White and Peter Curtis’ partnership stemmed from two people who started in the workforce in manufacturing, then at varying points in their lives, discovered their passion, and knew immediately that they wanted to pursue careers where they can help others.

When Peter began in manufacturing, he was elected for WSIB and Safety responsibilities. Peter enjoyed being able to care for people’s well-being, and because of this decided to go back to school where he graduated as a paralegal with honours in 2010. After a year of practicing civil law, Peter began to learn about the Disability Tax Credit and he was able to use his knowledge and passion around it to have a real emotional and financial impact on families who truly need it. Peter has found this so fulfilling in such a way that he has made it his focus. Peter is not only uncovering financial benefits for his clients, but because of his community awareness and connections, he is able to assist in educating people about all kinds of services available to people with special needs that they would otherwise not know about. Peter is changing lives by helping making daily challenges achievable, providing peace of mind, and opening the eyes of our community to services that are available but often overlooked.

Ken uncovered a passion for financial planning in 1992 when meeting with his own planner. As he learned and discovered ways to help himself and his family, he immediately knew that teaching others how to do the same was what he wanted to do. Since 2012, Ken began focusing on families with special needs, and the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). When you are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, the RDSP becomes an option to potentially take advantage of generous Government Bonds and Grants, and do so as an exempt asset to your Disability Benefits. Ken is meticulous when it comes to ensuring that you receive all the Bonds and Grants you are eligible for, and it is his greatest pleasure to be able to reconnect with his clients, and give them the news that their funds have come in. He refers to that moment as life changing for the people he helps, and when you see him talk about RDSPs, you can see it has become so emotionally rewarding for him to be able to help these families.

Peter and Ken started off their careers in similar places, and both made a change later in life to follow their passion- to both, it is a passion of helping others. They met through the Parkwood Gardens Neighborhood Group, and knew that by working together, they could reach more families in need. Continuing to work with groups such as Canadian Mental Health Association, Lakeside Hope House, Live and Learn, the March of Dimes and others, has allowed them to get in front of more families who don’t always know these advantages are there for them, or how to access them. Their love of community and the well-being of those in their community is what drives Peter and Ken to continue to be passionate about educating and serving those looking for help. They look forward to being able to help you, and those who are important to you.

ZEHRS AWARNESS BRINGS

BIG BUCKS FOR EPILEPSY SOUTH CENTRAL ONTARIO What began as a small fundraiser at a single Zehrs store in Guelph back in 2012 has grown to raise awareness and funds across the province of Ontario. This year, all forty-two Zehrs stores in Ontario joined together to support local epilepsy support centres in their fundraising and awareness efforts for the month of March.

On Thursday, May 18th, representatives from participating epilepsy agencies from across Ontario met at the Guelph location to receive a cheque for $47.936.24! They were met by enthusiastic Zehrs employees in purple shirts, beaming with pride for their wonderful efforts. With six epilepsy agencies benefiting from this initiative, funds will go directly back to the community, supporting essential epilepsy support and education programming.

The idea that became Givesome was born in Namibia (Africa) in 2002 when one of the founders, Jay Whitelaw, got to see first hand that there’s more to giving than spending a little money and getting a tax receipt. A friend of his who was living in poverty received some basic necessities for his home, and the entire community came together to celebrate the fact that people on the other side of the world who they would never meet would take care of one of their own. This started Jay on a journey to find a way to let givers see the impact of their giving.

Now, in 2017, Givesome is a not-for-profit created to show people the difference they make when they give. They highlight local and global charitable projects on their app and provide users the opportunity to fund those projects for $2, $5 or $10, keeping 0% of that money. The best part is that once a project is completed, video footage provided by the charity partners is sent back to everyone who supported that project. For as little as $2, givers can meet tangible needs and then see the direct impact of every donation.

By providing people the opportunity to engage with the stories of projects that resonate with them and see the result of their generosity, Givesome aims to increase the number of people who give to charity, meaning more good work gets done. By sharing statistics, giving trends and insights with charities, Givesome will help them better communicate with their donors, providing their supporters with a better giving experience.

Through partnerships with like-minded companies Givesome is able to offer donors the assurance that their dollars are going directly to the projects, not to Givesome’s administration. BONITA SILVER

ARTISTS DECOR

Bonita Silver is a self taught artisan whose inspiration came to her at the age of 16 while studying art in Kitchener. By practicing her art, Bonita's own constructivism techniques and interpretations emerged under the great umbrella of Art Deco.

Being a geometrical artisan in Art Deco, Bonita researched the Art Deco Constructivism Era, which began in the early 1900's in The Netherlands, with great interest. She began the process of establishing a collection featuring her works in this form of artistry.

Bonita first began her collection designs in the pen and ink medium, but over the years started to experiement with colour. Using oils, acrylics and leaf on everything from canvas to usable art forms, including fabrics, Bonita has now accommodated her designs on many scales.

It is Bonita's hope that by resurrecting this art form she can ensure that this artistry will once again become established as a reigning art form and therby helping her goal of becoming the leading Art Deco Constructivist Artisan in North America.

Scott Dunn has personally ridden 13,000km in over 6 years while researching Ebikes. This included repairing, learning from his mistakes and becoming very familiar with Ebikes and Chinese Ebikes in general.

What he learned is while there appear to be many Ebike companies out there, in fact there are only a small quantity of actual manufacturers with a lot of re-branding. In addition, Scott found out that the technical information on these Ebikes that was available through their North American distributers was pretty much next to nothing. Scott discovered that what he wanted and what he got were not always the same, which resulted in additional costs to make the Ebike suitable to ride in all Canadian seasons.

CANADIAN MEAL CANADA I50 TO CELEBRATE

Canada's 150th birthday is a time to celebrate all things Canadian. Being Canadian brings on thoughts of salmon swimming upstream to spawn, peameal bacon sizzling in a pan, beavertails on Ottawa's Rideau Canal, and tapping maple trees for fresh syrup when the cold winter starts to break.

Sifto is celebrating its 150th anniversary along with Canada's milestone birthday. Sifto commissioned leading Canadian gastro chef Mike Shedden to create a perfect Canadian dish of salt-cured maple Canadian Atlantic salmon. This dish is best served cold on top of a dill crème fraîche with fried capers on French bread.

SESQUICENTENNIAL

DIRECTIONS

MAPLE SALMON

Mix all dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl until completely combined.

SALT CURED

Coat salmon in cure, and reserve 40% of mixture.

Serves: 25 1oz slices

INGREDIENTS

Lay salmon skin side down on a baking sheet with half of remaining cure underneath.

• 1 kg Atlantic Salmon, skin on • 1 kg Sifto Table Salt • 1/2 kg Granulated Sugar • 2 Oranges, zested • 250 g Cracked and Roasted Black Pepper • 1/4 cup Smoked Paprika • 3/4 cup Real Maple Syrup Best served on French bread with dill crème fraîche and fried capers.

Mix in maple syrup to remaining cure and coat exposed salmon in wet cure.

Wrap tightly in cellophane and leave in refrigerator for three days.

STE P 06

Flip salmon once every 24 hours for best results.
