WRITER’S PROFILE
SIX STEPS TO BETTER THINKING
On Sunday, January 21st, University professor Dr. Christopher DiCarlo was at the eBar in downtown Guelph for his book signing of his latest book, “Six Steps to Better Thinking.” This is the latest in a series of books that Dr. CiCarlo has written including “How To Become A Really Good Pain In The A**: A Critical Thinker’s Guide To Asking The Right Questions.” The book signing was a successful event with slightly over 40 people in attendance to discuss Dr. DiCarlo’s latest book. Six Steps to Better Thinking: How to Disagree and Get Along explores the idea that there really are better and worse ways to think about things. The main point to this book is that if people use the Six Steps fairly, they will be better prepared to have meaningful discussions about important issues, how to disagree with another person and still not hate the other person. Dr. DiCarlo believes that, as a culture, we need to re-learn how to disagree and still get along. This requires maturity, diplomacy but above all, fairness. Dr. DiCarlo is convinced that the skills of critical thinking are key to helping us to learn how to survive disagreements without taking it personally or getting emotionally damaged. Dr. DiCarlo is a philosopher, educator and author who often teaches at the University of Toronto. He is also a lifetime member of Humanist Canada and an expert advisor for the Centre for Inquiry Canada.

PROFILE
Lars, Lisa & Brad
WITH LISA RICHARDS WHO ARE YOU?
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?
NAME: Lisa Richards
My parents who have been married for 50 years. They are the definition of strength, love and wisdom. They have always been supportive and strong for me. I lean on them for advice and encouragement and can always count on them to be honest and loving.
BIRTHPLACE: Kitchener WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Guelph CAREER: Media/Broadcasting
WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS? Without a doubt, my two boys, Braeden and Michael, are my greatest achievements.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PETS: I have a pet fish, named Bill.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING THAT VERY FEW PEOPLE WOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU? Most people don’t know that I’m actually very shy and that I get nervous when people stand behind me.
8 • COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA
WHAT BRINGS YOU THE GREATEST JOY OR SATISFACTION? That’s an easy one; being a mom. My two boys are my pride and joy. They have taught me what real love is. They are my world. I cry when they do, I smile when they do, I just don’t eat when they do, does any mom know what hot food is? They have already taught me so much about strength, courage, happiness and love. They fill me up.
WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? This was tough, but I think I’d have to say happy memories. It’s those moments that no one else would get because they are “you had to be there” moments.
WHAT ARE SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT YOU?
WHAT IS YOUR ALL TIME FAVOURITE MOVIE?
- I don’t like peanut butter, coffee or bacon
I have to go with two - Pretty Woman, because that’s the movie that taught me which utensils to use in public and The Replacements, because the underdog sports team gets me every time.
- I am a middle child - I have a large collection of Wonder Woman memorabilia - I wake up every morning at 3:30 am - I’ve been to New Zealand & Samoa - I change into my jammies the second I get home from work - I don’t swear! No really!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE VACATION SPOT? Believe it or not, a cabin in the Smokey Mountains. We have taken several family trips to Tennessee to enjoy the down time. I love the friendly people and that there’s no internet.
IF YOU COULD POSSESS ONE SUPER-HUMAN POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? If I could possess one super human power, it would be the power of bestowal. I would like to be able to give everyone what they needed. Tianna & Lisa
IF THE WHOLE COMMUNITY WERE LISTENING, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM? This is a simple one, I’d want to say thank you. This community has welcomed me in for the last 21 years. It is such an honour to be able to share a small part of someone’s day with them. Knowing someone cared enough to tune in, just to hang out with me is so humbling. I feel like I get to have tea with friends every morning. It’s not a job when you enjoy every second of it.
WHAT DOES COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU? When I think of the word community, four things come to mind - support, acceptance, inclusion and family. These are all things that I have come to love and respect about Guelph. I’ve been asked so many times over the years why have I stayed. First, I ask if they’d prefer I leave. Then I always respond with the same answer, which is because no matter how big this city gets, it still feels like a community to me. I love going to events and having the Mayor stop by to chat and take a selfie (he didn’t tell me to say that). I also love that the Chief of Police knows me by name and it’s not because of a criminal background or how many times I’ve been pulled over (never happens). I love seeing kids that recognize you from being in their school and sharing tea with someone you just met because they know your voice. This city is supportive, it accepts you, if you accept it. I always feel included and part of the family.

MOVIE REVIEW
elf named Leilah (Naoomi Rapace) who intends to use its powers to resurrect the Dark Lord, who will cause death and destruction and enslave anyone who survives. Now it's up to Ward and Jakoby to figure out what to do with the ancient relic, which isn’t easy when there's no one they can trust.
BY BRANDON REID etflix's newest and most expensive movie to date, Bright, takes place in an alternate Los Angeles where orcs, elves, fairies and humans all co-exist and have co-existed since the beginning of time. Now if this makes you think that this will be an in-depth epic like Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, your expectations will be crushed. Think more contained old school buddy-cop film mixed with fairytale situations and that's exactly what Bright is. But be warned, this isn't your kids fairytale. There's coarse language, blood, violence, brief nudity and did I mention coarse language? Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch, Suicide Squad) with a screenplay by Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein) Bright follows Officer Scott Ward (Will Smith) and his partner, Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton) who is the first orc police officer and hated by both orcs and humans, as they embark on a routine patrol only to run into a quiet, scared elf named Tikka (Lucy Fry) who is in possession of a magic wand; an ancient relic that is very rare and can only be touched by a select few that are called “brights.” If someone other than a bright touches the wand, they pretty much go boom. We soon find out that the wand belongs to a more powerful dark
CAPTURINGBETTERPH TOS SMARTPHONE/POINT AND SHOOT/ DIGITAL SLR. NO MATTER WHAT DEVICE YOU USE TO TAKE PHOTOS, WHAT LOOKS FINE ON THE DEVICE MAY LEAVE YOU DISAPPOINTED WHEN YOU WANT TO MAKE THAT SPECIAL IMAGE
The effects are well done, the action is solid, the humour between Will Smith and Joel Edgerton is fantastic and the story leaves enough unanswered questions to leave you wanting more (did somebody say sequel?). Not the best movie of 2017 by any means but if you were as disappointed with Suicide Squad as I was, David Ayer totally redeems himself with Bright.
BRANDON REID - A punk rocking, movie reviewing, podcasting pizza lover who spends most of his time nerding out in one way or another. He wishes he was Batman on a daily basis and enjoys losing himself in a good sci-fi/horror novel, movie or video game. e: redonyoupod@gmail.com • theredonyoupod.podbean.com

FRAMING IN CAMERA
raming a subject in the camera is the deliberate effort by the photographer to include a “frame” for the subject. The photographer includes a frame by backing up or zooming out, but framing can also be done at the editing stage if the image has sufficient size and resolution to allow cropping. A frame brings attention to the subject and adds context. Frames can be naturally occurring (1) or man-made, such as arches or doorways (2). The frame itself can be in silhouette (3). Not all frames have to completely surround the subject (4). Tree branches are common frames for landscapes (5). Unusual frames can provide context for portraits (6).

HARRY POTTER NIGHT
01
@ INDIGO
February 1st, was Harry Potter Night at Indigo, in Stone Road Mall. Fans both young and old showed up. Kids were given a Marauder’s Map, which lead them to 4 different exhibit locations in the store, each with the houses from the Harry Potter School. At the front was Hufflepuff, where volunteers from Party Corner helped create magic wands for kids. Next was Let’s Talk Science, with Ravenclaw, where kids placed small plastic animals in 5 different boxes, representing the different environments they live in. Kids then moved onto Slythern which was represented by Sciensational Sssnakes where kids and adults were introduced to live snakes and allowed to hold and pet them. The last destination was the F.L.A.S.H. Club, with crafts for Gryffindor. After visiting each stop, they received stickers and gave in the Marauder’s Map for a chance to win a draw.

By Matt J. King
JUMP! Article by: Matt J. King “Your turn.” I closed my eyes, trying to focus. I wanted to do this. Heck, it was my idea! But as my hands gripped the gnarly rope, fear gripped my pounding heart. I’ve always been afraid of heights. Sandflies made short work of my bare feet as I hesitated on the sandy riverbank. I needed to jump before they ate me alive. The blue river below babbled gently through the forest. It was peaceful and inviting in its tropical beauty, but the 15-foot drop (hey, don’t judge) between my feet and the water was enough for me to break out in a dizzy sweat. My Belizean buddy had gone first, swinging effortlessly and plunging into the water below. It was my turn, and I wasn’t about to waste time. In a near panic, I made a snap decision and jumped off. I swung far out to the middle of the river, let go, freefell and then... At the moment I expected to feel a splash, pain cut through my left arm like a blunt knife. I dangled, confused, then finally plunged into the frigid waters. “Help!” I spat as I broke the surface. “Get me out of here!” My friend was laughing as he climbed down. He had seen the whole thing- my frantic jump, my freefall, and the twisted rope that wrapped itself around my arm to catch me on the way down.
Certain my arm was broken, I yelled for him to hurry, seeing no humour in my potentially fractured humerus. After some First Aid and a decision that my arm was “probably not” broken, we went back to my friend’s house for some painkillers. As I look back on this event, several years wiser, I’m looking for a lesson to remember when I feel the scar in my tricep. I’m glad I faced my fear, but I wish I had been smarter about it. If I hadn’t jumped in a full terror, I could have been more present, made a better decision about how to hold the rope, and prevented the injury. More broadly then, how do I respond to other fears, challenges and decisions? Do I avoid them, or do I charge on: ready, fire, aim! I’ve learned the value of taking a deep breath to calm my mind before making any decision. Whether it’s making a purchase, cliff jumping, donating to charity, or asking someone out on a date; it’s worth taking a moment to clear my head and ask, “is this right? is it time?” A moment of meditation can make it all clear. My advice to you: don’t let fear hold you back. Be wise, be present, and when you’re ready, jump. Givesome is a free app on Google Play and the App Store. It connects you with charitable projects that you can support for as little as $2. Every time you give, you’ll receive a video within weeks, showing the difference you’ve made. It’s easy, fun, and safer than a Belizean rope swing. Learn more at Givesome.com TM

STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS
05
06
WITH MAYOR CAM GUTHRIE On February 2, Mayor Cam Guthrie gave his 2018 State of The City Address. This was his 4th address and the last one of his current term. The Guelph Chamber of Commerce hosted the event and it was sponsored in part by Bell, whom Mayor Guthrie thanked for their efforts towards Mental health with their #BellLetsTalk day. When Mayor Guthrie took the stage, he discussed how things have progressed while he has been mayor and how each year he used a theme to talk about upcoming initiatives. His first year was about turning “Me” to “We,” 2016 was about a “Job Evaluation” and 2017 was “#GuelphProud.” This year, after being inspired by a gift from an unknown fan of a “Guelph On Board” game, Mayor Guthrie outlined the upcoming changes through the use of a personal version of Guelph Monopoly. Each table had a set of die and everyone played the game. Each roll of the die moved the marker around the board, which had categories that tied into changes. Mayor Guthrie talked about how he has gone to Queen’s Park on behalf of Guelph to ensure that we would be a stop on the Province’s proposed high-speed rail line. Even though when it was first proposed, Guelph was not going to be part of this, Mayor Guthrie convinced them to include Guelph in the service. After thanking everyone who came out, Mayor Guthrie ended the session with a wish that we all continue to make Guelph a better place and for us to continue to make us #GuelphProud.
