I always love this time of year because it offers so many opportunities to connect and spend time with family and friends. It’s a chance to get back to what’s really important – time with loved ones. 2017 was a year full of “#guelphproud” moments. We celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday and Guelph’s 190th birthday in fine style. Guelph raked in a number of new accolades – including being named the most attractive city in Canada for real estate investment, one of the top ten cities in the country for newcomers, and one of Canada’s best cities for foreign direct investment. I cut the ribbon on many new and expanded businesses this year – and witnessed first-hand the pride on the faces of business owners and employees. And I did a happy dance at the announcement that Guelph will not only get two-way, all-day GO train service, but also a station stop on a highspeed rail line between Toronto and London. As Mayor, I get the chance to celebrate a lot of special “#guelphproud” moments with the people of this city. Community Captured Guelph is all about sharing those moments. I hope you will be inspired by the pages of this magazine to check out a festival or event you’ve never attended before, or get involved with a group or cause in our city. As I walk through the streets every mid-December, I can't help but notice that something is different from the rest of the year. It's not just the snowflakes, coloured lights and Christmas carols. People behave differently. They're more likely to say hi to strangers, to smile warmly, to give to charity. There's an extra measure of warmth and goodwill that comes alive during the holidays but settles in for a long hibernation from January to November. So what's at the root of this upwelling of goodwill we see this time of year? The primary factor, I believe, is "othercentredness." This time of year we’re thinking of others, giving to others, and getting together to make new memories with old friends, colleagues, and family. Our focus shifts from the things we do to the people we care about. But soon, the seasons change. We get back into the routines of our "real lives", and we often lose sight of the happiness we felt just a short time ago. Some people seem to be immune to this change of season. They know how to keep the momentum of joy through the whole year. You can probably think of someone who is always cheerful, even in the dark days of February. They have a presence you can feel, and being around them is like a breath of fresh air.
What’s different about them? How can we become more like that? A mentor of mine once said that there are two types of people in the world: thermometers and thermostats. A thermometer reflects the temperature of its environment, but a thermostat changes it. Similarly, some people reflect the mood of the environment around them, while others intentionally set that mood. So who are these people that carry joy within themselves 12 months a year? They are the ones who look after others, who volunteer, and take pleasure in helping. They are generous, not because they were born that way, but because they practice generosity all year long. So what should we do about this? Enjoy the season. Revel in the good times. Be generous. Enjoy your family. When 2018 hits and we start getting back to life as usual, just remember to include some other-focused activities into your routine, like giving, volunteering, and expressing love to those around you. Don’t be sad when Christmas is over; be happy because you can take the best part of it with you. The happiness that follows you is the happiness you give away.

PLAYING AMONGST SUMMER MOUNTAINS by Mark Whoachickie, illustrated by Sam Phippen
Mark Whoachickie is a father, friend, and most recently the storyteller of his first children’s book, Playing Amongst Summer Mountains. As an avid outdoorsman, he hopes that those who read this, and other books in the Playing Amongst Summer Mountains series, will be inspired to enjoy our wonderful surroundings with their family and friends. When he was writing Playing Amongst Summer Mountains he asked his daughter Hannah who was the best artist she knew at John McCrae school. Without hesitation she said Sam Phippen. Sam Phippen is a 16 year old artist and illustrator living in Guelph. Sam is the latest in four generations of artists in his family, and the illustrations in Playing Amongst Summer Mountains is Sam’s first professional artistic opportunity and the beginning of his creative career. They both intend to continue the series and are already hard at work putting together the sequel.

GUELPH MERCURY RISING by Phil Andrews
Although the sun may has set on the Guelph Mercury, the venerable daily newspaper that graced Guelph's homes and streets for 149 years before closing, the spirits of those that wrote for it live on in a new book. Guelph Mercury Rising, a collection of short story fiction written by former Guelph Mercury journalists was featured at indigo at Stone Road Mall. Phil Andrews, who served as the Managing Editor of the Guelph Mercury from September 2005 to its close in January of 2016, is the editor, and one of the authors, of Guelph Mercury Rising. "Once we put the word out we got a really incredible response," Andrews said. "This idea captured the muse for many people." In the wake of the Mercury closing the Guelph Mercury Alumni Writers Group was formed. Guelph Mercury Rising will feature around 20 short stories written by members of that group, people that worked there over the last 30 years. It's been published by Guelph's Vocamus Press. Sales of the book benefit Action Read Community Literacy Centre - a charity that had been supported by the daily newspaper.
THE STONE CHURCHES OF DOWNTOWN GUELPH by Robert White
“I’ve spent much of career photographing news events”says Robert White, an award-winning journalist/photographer.“ At a local photo club I take part in, the members were challenged to move outside their photographic comfort zones. So I began taking photos of Guelph’s downtown churches.” The challenge resulted in The Stone Churches of Downtown Guelph, a photo-essay book which portrays, in black and white, the best in 19th century church architecture. “Downtown churches - and in some cases - church architecture are fast disappearing from the Canadian landscape,” says White. “But as buildings age and congregations dwindle, difficult decisions will need to be made and - as has happened elsewhere - buildings are converted or razed. The Stone Churches of Downtown Guelph is my small part in preserving both the religious and architectural history of Guelph’s city centre,” says White.
