CHRIS

CONTINUES TO TRAIN... Written by CHRIS FERGUSON, Snap Fitness Member

I

’ve been at SNAP Fitness in the Junction for four years now, and my photo can’t compare to the shots of chiseled bodies on many fitness websites. But I love this photo: it shows me being active four years after I staggered into the gym reeling from a two year battle with stage IV throat and neck cancer. Intensive radiation, chemo, antibiotics, and radical neck surgery left me a mess: severe weakness, fatigue and weight gain. Thyroid damage created wild hormonal swings. I really needed help to follow my doctors’ advice to push myself back into activity. What SNAP gave me is a great team of trainers with the expertise, experience and enthusiasm to help me work through my illness and injury toward the healthy life I wanted to get back. My SNAP team coached me on stretching, weightlifting and conditioning workouts, moving me steadily toward restored energy and fitness. We tracked metrics to show my progress and maintain momentum towards my goals. I moved from needing help to lift my arms over

my head to lifting with heavy weights. I moved from struggling to walk around the block to enjoying aerobic classes. I dropped 32lb, cutting my body fat by more than half in year two and have kept it off. Restoring my mobility and best of all feeling well is priceless. It’s been hard work. And I’ve loved it all. torontohighpark@snapfitness.com

ANNUAL

FENG SHUI STARS

FOR THE YEAR OF THE FIRE ROOSTER by Karyn Klaire Koski

Just after every Chinese New Year, Feng Shui devotees clean house and go about minor decor changes with the sole intention of harmonizing their home’s energy. Feng Shui, as you may have heard, is a much involved metaphysical study that scrutinizes your house, the land around it and the relationship each of the house’s occupants have to the present time, the age of a building and their own astrological chart. There are truly many layers. Fundamentally, it's about how energy enters a house and reacts to shapes, colours and elements as it meanders along interior pathways and comes to rest on walls and heavy furnishings. Then one sees if that alchemy or reaction is in balance. Feng Shui is not simply about hanging crystals, mirrors or Chinese trinkets and it is not entirely about power and wealth. It’s more like a biorhythm that fluctuates with you, your home and time. There are many resources to help you plot out a natal chart of your home by determining it’s facing direction and taking note of the year your home was built. With that information, a person can identify the ever evolving energies, otherwise known as “Flying Stars”. This particular practice relies on whether the five elements (used to describe energy) generate or are in conflict with each other. Using a compass you can determine which of your rooms are within each of the eight directions. Doors and windows let energy in and its nature is dependent on from what direction it came from.

FENG SHUI

ANNUAL STAR TIPS

FEB 2017 - FEB 2018 East: basic element is wood. This year a wonderful earth energy arrives that can bring good luck and great fortune, encourage it with the colour red. Avoid digging the ground outside. South East: basic element is also wood. This year it will have a fiery, boosting kind of luck that has the potential to bring fame and recognition. South: basic element is fire. An unfortunate arriving earth star can bring misfortune. Place golden round shaped objects to minimize any negative effects. The sound of a chiming clock can also be beneficial. Best not to disturb this direction outdoors by digging or construction work. South West: the area of maternal earthy love will have a chatty, nosy visiter this year. This type of energy can causes gossip, betrayal, and misunderstandings in communication. Round shapes and metal colours can help calm it down. West: metal meets aggressive wood here for the year and the combination can cause conflicts and arguments. Avoid digging, outdoor construction and other loud disturbances. North West: this direction will be challenged by a visiting earth star that can trigger health issues. Adding golden round shaped objects can be very helpful to minimize any negative effects. North: the watery nature of this direction can help boost the annual metal visiting star. There’s opportunity for career success and promotion. North East: a smart and flirty star will arrive to help with creativity and romance. Having a desk here can help in academic studies. You can also enliven the space with upright rooting plants (like bamboo in water) or fresh floral bouquets. PARKDALE:

138 YEARS Just a dozen years after Canada itself was founded, York County’s Village of Parkdale established itself along the boundaries of a previously inhabited, Aboriginal settlement. The hilly plateaued area that still overlooks the shores of Lake Ontario today, was situated perfectly along eventual road and rail lines. To service these routes of travel, an area of commerce was created.

OF HISTORY

by Karyn Klaire Koski

01

As York evolved into Toronto, Parkdale’s early years experienced many stories of railway life, political assertion about independence and an ever-growing presence of exquisite Victorian mansions and places of worship. Without any doubt, the most heritage memorable time was the development of the waterfront. Masses of visitors flocked to Sunnyside Amusement Park, The Canadian National Exhibition and Palais Royal. However, everything changed with the building of the Gardiner Express way in the 50’s. The residential and business areas of Parkdale Village were cut off from access to the waterfront and as a result, the area eventually transformed. In time, most of the grand homes were converted into affordable housing and many long term facilities sprung up in the district. As rental rates were lower than city average, the area was perfect for families just starting out. Additionally, the availability of reasonably priced accommodations attracted thousands of new comers to Canada and as a result, Parkdale has now become a wonderful mix of international cultures.

02

In 1978, Parkdales’ BIA was established. Now decades later, the area benefits from their improvements, proposed urban planning strategies and business boosting campaigns.

Profile: Cheri DiNovo

COMMUNITY

Q&A

Who are you, how did you get to where you are now? I am Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo, Member of Provincial Parliament for Parkdale – High Park – but you can just call me Cheri. I’ve run the gamut to get here – I started out as a child performer, I was a street kid for a while sleeping on the lawn of Queen’s Park, I was an activist, demonstrating in the first ever Pride Parade, I was a business owner, and I was a church Minister. I was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in a by-election in 2006. Last year it was an absolute honour to celebrate my tenth anniversary as your MPP.

Highlight your career (standouts/hurdles) A big highlight has really spanned the last 10 years: I have passed more Private Member’s Bills than any other MPP in Ontario’s record, and have passed more pro-LGBTQ legislation than anyone in Canadian history. I couldn’t have done it without the support of Parkdale-High Park residents. Together we raised the minimum wage to $10, through which over a million Ontarians saw their income increase by 28% over three years. We succeeded in getting Toby’s Act passed, an amendment to the Ontario Human Rights Code to include gender identity and gender expression–the first of its kind in North America. We made history again by banning “Conversion Therapy” for youth (therapy intended to prevent young people from identifying as LGBTQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual or queer] and by championing parental equality for LGBTQ parents. What is a huge highlight is how much people in our community really care about each other. It’s reinforced every day, every year. It inspires me.

What are you doing right now? Good, not happy? Oh, I have lots on the go, of course. There’s loads of work still to be done. This year my team and I will continue to push for social, economic and environmental justice. I’m focusing on a few specific things, like bringing local democratic planning to our city by removing Toronto from the jurisdiction of the Ontario Municipal Board; continuing the fight to repeal breed specific legislation and the Safe Streets Act; and, proclaiming Trans Day of Remembrance in Ontario.

BUT MOST OF THE TIME, I’M FOCUSED ON SOCIAL JUSTICE AND MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE FOR THOSE WHO NEED AN ADVOCATE. 16 • C O M M U N I T Y C A P T U R E D . C A

MPP Cheri DiNovo

Show us your fun side: Cats or Dogs Oh, I have one of each. I won’t choose one or the other will be angry.

Left or right Left! Far, far left!

Coffee or tea Coffee—I have to say that as my son owns a coffee shop in Parkdale.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself

MAINLY, I WANT TO KEEP MAKING A DIFFERENCE. I WANT TO KEEP MAKING THE CHANGES THAT NEED TO BE MADE.

Oh! My guilty pleasure is watching reality TV. It’s so terrible but so great.

Who do you share your life with (family/affiliations) I share my life with my husband, my children, my dog and my cat. I also share my life with my friends, my community, my constituents, and God. It’s a good life.

How do you personally love to live your life? I like to keep busy – I’m always doing a million things – but I try and my family reminds me to, take some time here and there to breathe, take it all in. Yoga has been helpful with that. Traveling also helps, even if it’s somewhere nearby, as long as I’m surrounded by family and friends. But most of the time, I’m focused on social justice and making the world a better place for those who need an advocate.

What are your goals and aspirations? Mainly, I want to keep making a difference. My goal as your MPP is, as always, that I want to make sure I am communicating directly with the community, so I am always up to date on what it is that matters to you. I’ve made sure to have as many lines of communication open as possible, from phone to e-mail to social media. I want to keep hearing from the people of Parkdale – High Park. I want to keep making the changes that need to be made.

What does the word community mean to you?

Cheri with Naomi Klein, Social Activist

Community, to me, means ongoing support of each other. A respect and appreciation for our diversity, and how our differences and similarities are an important and beautiful part of our community as a whole. We take care of each other.

How did you come to this neighbourhood? I’ve lived in Parkdale for over 20 years. I came to Parkdale when I was hired as Minister at the church now known as Roncesvalles United. I love the diversity and character of my neighbourhood; the older buildings and the refurbished ones. I love shopping local; Roncesvalles and West Queen West are so vibrant and interesting and fun. You can’t get a better meal, gift or haircut than you can in our neighbourhood. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Cheri at PRIDE

Who inspires you? • I have to say it again – my community. Local business owners who put their heart and soul into their work. • Young women, who are our future leaders, in my “Girls Government” initiative there are kids who already have such a passion for bettering the world, even at such a young age. • Newcomers who left the country of their birth and are making new lives here as our neighbours and friends. • People living with disadvantages that come to me and advocate for a better society. • Activists, who volunteer their time for charities and causes that matter to them. There is so much good in the world. CC

PUPPY POWER: Preparing for a

I

NEW PUPPY

ntroducing a new puppy into your household can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. Whether you’re considering purchasing a puppy or whether Santa left a four-legged friend under the tree, it is important to do your homework as proper health care and training is essential for a happy and well-adjusted dog. This requires commitment on your part in terms of time and money... and patience too! The following are some areas of pet care to consider before welcoming a new dog into your family: Puppies require a series of routine vaccines in their first few months of life to protect them against potentially serious infectious diseases such as canine distemper virus and parvovirus. At four months of age, your puppy should also be vaccinated for Rabies which is actually required by law in Ontario. There are other non-routine vaccines, such as Leptospirosis and Bordetella, that may be beneficial for your puppy depending on their lifestyle and risk of exposure. Your veterinarian can discuss these ‘non-core’ vaccines with you and devise a vaccine protocol that is tailored to your individual pet.

development, which is particularly important in large breed puppies. While raw diets continue to gain in popularity, these diets should not be fed to your puppy without consulting your veterinarian first. These diets may not contain the adequate nutrition required for a growing puppy and there are potential risks associated with feeding raw diets (for example, bacterial contamination) which is of greater concern in young dogs whose immune systems are still immature.

Intestinal parasites are very common in young puppies. A fecal exam should be done at your first veterinary visit to screen for potential parasites. Prophylactic deworming, either given orally or applied topically, is also recommended for young dogs not only to protect them from parasites but also to protect you and your family as some canine parasites are ‘zoonotic’, meaning they can be transmitted to people.

Proper training is crucial in establishing a good relationship between your family members and your new puppy and this training needs to start early. Dogs thrive on routine and this should be taken into consideration when feeding puppies and when taking them outdoors to eliminate. Puppy socialization classes are recommended for all puppies, not only to provide training tips but also to allow your puppy to socialize with other dogs in a controlled environment. Interacting with other dogs will enable your puppy to learn social cues and appropriate play behaviour.

Pet insurance helps to alleviate some of the financial commitment that comes with caring for a canine companion. There are several pet insurance companies on the market that offer various plans ranging from basic to comprehensive coverage. The earlier that you apply for pet insurance, the less likely there are to be ‘pre-existing conditions’ that may affect future reimbursement for certain injuries or illnesses.

While caring for and training a new puppy can be a lot of work, it is more than worth it! Just be prepared and do not hesitate to contact your local veterinary clinic for advice before bringing the new family member home. There are also many adult dogs that need homes and could be a good fit for your household. Whether they are young or old, congratulations on the newest, and fuzziest, member of your family!

The dietary requirements of puppies differ from those of adult dogs, largely due to a higher metabolic rate, and this needs to be taken into account when selecting a diet for your new puppy. A good quality, puppy kibble is the best diet choice as these diets tend to be higher in calories, to allow for growth in your puppy, and have appropriate calcium and phosphorous levels needed for bone

PET ADOPTION

say hello to LILY

My name is LILY. I’m 3 years old, quiet as a mouse, and a little bit shy. Definitely beats the mean streets, if you know what I’m saying! But I am super affectionate. I am not a fan of other cats. I like to soak up your attention, hang out by myself, and any other furry felines

in my face is just a NO for me. But dogs I can live with. Not necessarily play with but live with. I’m fully vetted and in perfect health! The perfect companion. If you’re interested in meeting me, please email info@teamcatrescue.ca.
