On Friday, December 1, Downtown Grimsby hosted a very successful Shop Downtown Grimsby event. All the merchants were open, inviting shoppers to drop by for some Christmas cheer as well as great holiday gift ideas and special offers. The beautiful voices of the carollers strolling along the streets and Santa popping in and out of the businesses, made it picture perfect. Hot apple cider and cookies were handed out to keep the shoppers warm while they shopped.

PROFILE
WITH EVA LOWISZ WHO ARE YOU?
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST JOY OR SATISFACTION?
NAME: Eva Lowisz
There are many things that bring me joy and satisfaction. My family and friends definitely bring me the greatest joy. They have all had a part of creating who I am today. It’s never a dull moment. My greatest satisfaction would be my work. As Co-owner and Hair Stylist at Couture Hair Design, Stoney Creek and Couture Rockwood, I stay very busy. It gives me the ability to change someone’s looks, view of themselves and attitude. The best feeling in the world is seeing a client looking and feeling great while knowing their hair is well taken care of. There is no other feeling like it!
BIRTHPLACE: Toronto WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Grimsby CAREER: Owner & Operator of Salon Chain, Couture Hair Design
WHAT WOULD YOU DEEM YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? My greatest achievement is starting and operating my own salon chain. I have two locations. Due to the fact that I operate this, I was able to help a client who had stage 4 cancer. We buzzed her hair off and took good care of her hair and appearance throughout her treatments. She survived and is now on the road to recovery.
10 • C O M M U N I T Y C A P T U R E D . C A
HOW ARE YOU GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? My salon sponsors local sports teams. On an average, we sponsor two to three teams per year. I have also spent many hours volunteering cutting and styling hair at Trillium Hospital in Mississauga and have spent time volunteering at animal shelters.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? The best advice I have been given would have to be from my mother. She always told me if something doesn’t work, do it differently and never give up on your dreams. She taught me that life is not just black and white, there are many roads you can take and it’s up to me to choose which one I want to take a chance on. It may not always be the right one, but it will get me to where I want to get to.
IF YOU COULD POSSESS ONE SUPER-HUMAN POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? If I had super human powers I would hope to have the power of teleportation. I would travel all around the world and study different hair styles and trends and bring them back to our city.
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? I try to find inspiration in everything around me. I admire young successful people and really look up to them. I always aspire to be better or learn something new. I learned from my Mother to always have an open mind. She is the biggest inspiration in my life and a little lady with a huge heart! I owe her for who I am.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE VACATION SPOT? I love London, England. I love the culture, the social life, the fashion and the hair.
WHAT DOES THE WORD COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU? The word ‘community’ means a sense of belonging. It’s the feeling of togetherness and safety from the people around you. It’s like-minded people that come from different places and opinions, coming together for a certain cause. It’s your neighbours and friends and your home away from home.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ACTORS? I love Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME? My favourite movie of all time is “Two of A Kind” starring Mary Kate and Ashley Olson.
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT VERY FEW PEOPLE WOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU? One thing that very few people know about me is that I am a huge animal lover. We have a 14-year-old dog, Ozzy, and a 6-year-old cat, Brooklyn. I find animals fascinating. I love that they all have their own little personalities. Something else others don’t know about me is that my friend and I made a video and applied to be on Amazing Race Canada.

& FOOD OF THE WORLD
Photos by: Erika Elvarenga & Nicole Buist
Kevin and Julia Garratt spoke to the congregation of Lakemount Worship Centre on November 5th. They were missionaries in China since 1984. In August 2014, they were detained and wrongfully accused of stealing Chinese military secrets. Julia Garratt was released on bail in February 2015 and returned to Canada, but Kevin Garratt remained in detention for over 19 months. He was released and deported in September 2016 and together they now call this time their ‘two-year bonus.’ They shared their story of staying full of faith. It was an exciting night at our Foods of the World Celebration where over 22 countries were represented. Lunar Swamy, from The Dalit Freedom network, shared about the work they are doing in India.

But most importantly, they MUST have an endless supply of tennis balls! This guy LOVES to play fetch!! He also enjoys lots of belly rubs. Niko is truly an amazing dog! 15TH ANNUAL
PILGRIMAGE
TWO FAMILIES, ONE WORLD
O
n Sunday, October 29th Blessed Trinity had their 15th Annual Pilgrimage. This sacred walk consisted of mass and 10 km walk through downtown Grimsby. Each year this event occurs on the last Sunday of October and the money raised goes towards efforts to aid the community of Las Pajas, Dominican Republic. The students, parents and teachers of Blessed Trinity gather together, with the local elementary feeder schools and many residents, in solidarity to raise awareness for the third world and help our brothers and sisters of Las Pajas. The day began with a well-attended mass consisting of Blessed Trinity students, faculty, elementary school students, and residents from the Grimsby community. Mass was celebrated with Bishop Bergie and Father Ronald Angervil. We were very fortunate to have the Bishop at this year’s pilgrimage; he provided many words of wisdom and gave an uplifting homily. The mass was beautiful with the help from the Pilgrimage Committee, our Chaplaincy Leader Michelle Davis, Blessed Trinity’s choir, technology group and Sky Pilots.
and sausages, and Tim Hortons who provided baked goods and hot chocolate. These contributions are always a hit! We are very grateful to receive generous donations for the Blessed Trinity Pilgrimage each year. Throughout the past 15 years the money raised by Blessed Trinity went towards cement floors in many homes of the bateys, where the locals of Las Pajas reside. Additionally, because of the countless donations a water tower was constructed to provide everyone residing in the bateys with safe and clean water. Furthermore, a livestock and farming project is now in place, educating the people of Las Pajas on how to properly grow and maintain sustainable resources. This initiative provides individuals with funding to obtain scholarships so residents of Las Pajas can go back to their community and help their families. Over the past 15 years, Blessed Trinity has raised over $400,000 and we will continue to support our extended family in Las Pajas to provide them with an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. I am very fortunate to have been able to participate in this pilgrimage for my past four years at Blessed Trinity. This truly is a great experience that allows each individual an opportunity to support another community that has become a part of Blessed Trinity’s family. There was an impressive turnout this year, with over 400 participants. Each year we see a greater community involvement and we are thankful for another successful pilgrimage. Mr. Zaroda, the principal at Blessed Trinity is proud to announce that - “The elementary feeder schools helped raise $3000 and your Thunder raised $20,000. Thank you to the staff, students and parents for your commitment and support for those who are less fortunate in Las Pajas.”
The morning continued with a 10 km walk through downtown Grimsby. During this walk, a student representative from Blessed Trinity and each elementary school carried their schools’ cross. This is always a great way to include each part of Blessed Trinity’s family of schools. Each participant was able to rest and snack at the halfway point thanks to Piller’s who donated hot dogs Article by: Emma Holloway, Blessed Trinity Catholic SS COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA •

School Life GRIMSBY
SECONDARY SCHOOL During December, our classes participate in the Grimsby Benevolent Fund (GBF) hamper program. Classes adopt a family and shop to provide food and gifts for each member of the family. Each year, our students look forward to generously supporting others to ensure they have food and gifts for their family celebrations. Our winter concert showcases the musical talents of our students and is a highlight of the season, Student Council plans spirit week activities which will culminate with a talent show and basketball game against the Niagara Regional Police basketball team. In the new year, we will be on the move. In March, a group will head north for a wilderness, leadership adventure at Camp Pathfinder. Our music department will cruise the Mediterranean in April. Our students have the opportunity to see another part of the world and perform for international audiences. And in May, students have the opportunity to visit New York City and explore the wide variety of culinary options that can be found there. “The importance of studying French in the Canadian context cannot be overemphasized. French is not only one of Canada’s two official languages, but is also widely used throughout the world with respect to business, culture, and international diplomacy. The ability to communicate in French gives students many advantages, both in Canada and internationally, and helps them gain a better understanding and appreciation of Frenchspeaking societies.” Ministry of Education (Ontario) The French Immersion program at the DSBN is open to all students who are entering Grade 1. It provides students with opportunities to develop proficiency in Canada’s two official languages and to learn about another culture. Children benefit from learning in two languages - their thinking and reasoning skills improve, and English language skills are developed. Central French Immersion Public School is where it all begins. Grade 1 entry to French Immersion welcomes the young Stingrays to Central providing an outstanding education for all students. Innovative programs that meet the needs of all students combined with many extra-curricular opportunities that encourage the development of excellence, integrity and respect ensure that all Central F.I. students are off to a great start. At the end of grade 8 these students move from Stingrays to Eagles at Grimsby Secondary School. For many years Grimsby Secondary School has been the school for the Extended French program in the west end of the District School Board of Niagara. The program is well established and staffed with teachers who are experts in their fields. In September, our grade 9 and 10 students will be in the French Immersion program. Many of you are already wondering “What’s the difference? I already thought it was French Immersion.” The distinction is in the number of hours of French instruction students have already received and will continue to receive at GSS. Students entering a French Immersion program will have received a minimum of 3800 hours of French instruction, or equivalent in their elementary school. Our students from Central F.I. Public School will continue their studies in French at GSS. In grades 9 and 10 they take Science, Geography and History in French as well as a French Immersion class each year. They also have the opportunity to study Drama in French in grade 9, Civics and Careers in grade 10 or Phys. Ed. in grade 10. In grades 11 and 12, courses that are offered in French include Psychology, Anthropology and Sociology, Law and Biology as well as the French Immersion classes. The certificate of French Immersion Studies is awarded by the District
16 • C O M M U N I T Y C A P T U R E D . C A
School Board of Niagara at graduation. Given the variety of course offerings, students have flexibility in how they complete the requirements for the certificate. The French Immersion Certificate provides evidence of a student’s degree of involvement in the French Immersion program. This certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the Senior French Immersion courses offered at GSS. It is important for students applying to study at a French or bilingual post-secondary institute, as well as for students intending to enter a workforce where French can be used for communicating. This excellent program prepares our students to continue studying in English or French at university or college. Many go on to universities like McGill and the University of Ottawa, receiving scholarships and bursaries, for post-secondary opportunities. When our graduates return to visit they are delighted to say that they have been well-prepared academically, socially and emotionally for what comes next!

EDEN
HIGH SCHOOL Eden High School offers a high quality education and a spiritual life component. Many of our families value this extra-curricular program, however, Eden is open to all students in grades 9 – 12 in the Niagara Region. The Spiritual Life Centre (SLC) at Eden High School is a unique component of life at Eden. We hit the ground running with 265 students participating in three grade retreats up in beautiful Muskoka during September. Retreats help set the tone for the year, building community, making new friends and reconnecting with old ones. Our leadership-training track, Epereia (Greek for influence), is in its third year with 16 students beginning a yearlong journey of growing in Christ-like leadership. Each morning, at the First 25, we offer an opportunity for students to be equipped to engage their world from a biblical perspective. In the SLC the doors are always open. We strive to be a safe place for all students. All students considering Eden were welcome at our Open House on Nov. 30th. However, if you missed this you can learn more about Eden from our website eden.dsbn.org. Find the application by hovering over the Guidance Tab then clicking on the Course Selection Process tab. Here you will find Course Selection sheets for all future Eden students. Please contact Guidance if you have any questions about applying to Eden. Private tours can be arranged upon request by calling the school at (905) 646-9884. You can also follow Principal Burns on Twitter or Instagram at edenprincipal. The calendar of events for students this fall has been full with Student Council initiatives. Bake sales have abounded thanks to our hardworking Fundraising Committee. Busloads of students enjoyed an evening at Canada’s Wonderland for Halloween Haunt as well as Eden’s first Halloween dance with a haunted hallway included! The Eden community came together to support their football team ‘Under the Lights’ in a game against Grimsby and had the opportunity to appreciate many talented students at a Coffeehouse this November.
In November, Eden Business Teacher, Holly Etherington, brought 37 Business students to compete at DECA Regionals. This was our third year competing in the Business and Leadership competition recognized worldwide. DECA is a business case competition with the purpose of preparing future leaders and young entrepreneurs for careers and education in marketing, finance, hospitality, management, and other business areas. This is a great opportunity for students to develop presentation skills, critical thinking and meet like-minded business students in Southern Ontario. #DECAismysport #Limitless Guidance has been busy this fall doing grade 12 presentations in classrooms about researching for post-secondary schools and programs. Mrs. Beaudoin and Mrs. Schellenberg spoke about how to use the electronic info website for University research and ontariocolleges.ca website to search for college programs. Students asked valuable questions such as, “Is university better than college for job prospects?” The answer to this question varies. Although universities are doing a great job educating our students, colleges have come a long way in terms of options and pathways that lead to a degree programs. Students should also consider how they learn when making a decision about post-secondary education and research both systems to make informed decisions. Athletically our Flyers have been very successful. The following students went to OFSAA Cross Country based on these results in SOSSA: Owen Lockyer, 1st, Amy Baggs and Carter McMaster, 4th, Olivia Morey 4th and Joseph Nokeo, 3rd. Junior Girls basketball played in the SOSSA championship. Junior Boys volleyball won the SOSSA championship and the senior boys volleyball won 14 straight SOSSA championships!

ATHLETICS Our Bucs athletes are representing well both in our community and in our school. Tryouts are now completed for girls volleyball and boys basketball, hockey & swimming. These seasons will begin the first week of December and we are looking forward to more success from all of these teams. The wrestling team is off to a great start in their first tournament hosted by Eden S.S. The Bucs brought home 2 medals. Geet Chahil won a silver medal and Samantha Adams brought home the bronze in their respective categories. Next up for the Bucs wrestling team is the Blessed Trinity Tournament. Over the past weekend, BDSS was represented by two of our outstanding field hockey players at the U.S. National Field Hockey Showcase. Alex McDonald and Jessica Tillmanns were selected to attend the showcase in Florida with the A&C Field Hockey Club where their outstanding skills garnered attention from many Colleges and Universities. Last but certainly not least, we must highlight the outstanding efforts of Kieran Lupish. Kieran is a grade 9 student at BDSS who travelled to Sofia, Bulgaria for his first International Trampoline Gymnastics Competition. Up against the world’s best, Kieran finished 4th place in the DMT event. An outstanding result for his first time on the world stage. We see big things in the future for Kieran, and are so proud of his accomplishments!
SOCKTOBER Socktober continues into December. BDSS students are supporting the Socktober initiative from Community Care of West Niagara. Community members are encouraged to donate new, warm, cozy socks for children, women and men to the donation bin in the BDSS office, or to Community Care of West Niagara directly. This organization works tirelessly to support families in our community – something BDSS values very much.

School Life BLESSED TRINITY
SECONDARY SCHOOL R E C R E AT I O N A N D H E A LT H Y A CT I V E L I V I N G LEADERSHIP COURSE John Maxwell once said, “Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others,” (Maxwell). PLH4M or Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership is a new course at Blessed Trinity. This course is running for the first time, and counts for both university and college applications. This Grade 12 course is taught by Mrs. Schweitzer and focuses on the beneficial aspects of being physically active and developing strong leadership skills. Through this course, students learn organization skills, as well as how to encourage other students to get active. The purpose of this course is to teach students the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and to prepare them for college and university programs that focus on recreation and leisure management. One of the areas that this course focuses on is effectively organizing, running, and leading intramural sports. The class is split small groups, a sport is given and for one week the group is responsible for organizing a tournament. So far, the Grade 12 class has successfully run sports such as, volleyball, handball and basketball. Each tournament is run solely by the designated leaders for that week and responsibilities include: creating sign-up sheets for teams; promoting the event; creating the draw sheet for the tournament and assigning their other classmates with jobs. So far, each sport has had remarkable turn-outs with regards to student and staff participation. Sports to look forward to in the upcoming weeks include pickleball, dodgeball, and badminton.
