None of us in the Roncesvalles neighbourhood could fail to be moved by the refugee crisis. In true Canadian spirit we think globally and act locally making a difference one family at a time. So we're aiming to sponsor a refugee family in our west end Toronto neighbourhood. We urge you to join us by donating, volunteering, attending our fundraising events or contributing in other ways. Our group now includes 40 neighbours and friends. We are meeting regularly to discuss our sponsorship application, fundraising, and the many things the newcomers will need to begin their new life in Canada. Our goal was to raise $50,000. WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE 01

While Roncesvalles Refugee Relief waits for their two sponsored families to arrive, we are assisting many refugee families who have arrived in Canada during the past year. Some of the newcomer families RRR has been working with have expressed a need for warm winter clothing. A Winter Clothing Drive for Roncy was held Thursday, November 10 from 10am-2pm at Roncesvalles United Church, formerly Emmanuel Howard Park United Church. Thank you everyone who donated coats, jackets, sweaters, snowsuits, snow pants, toques, hats, scarves, mittens, gloves and boots and warms clothes in all sizes. The basement was filled with all your contributions.

Upstairs a light lunch was served thanks to the many contributions from friends and neighbours of veggies, fruit, sandwiches, cheese, crackers and yummy sweets.

SHARE YOUR LIGHT On Wednesday, November 23rd, St. Joseph’s Health Centre held their annual Share Your Light Festival. Guests were entertained by performances by local children’s choirs and dance groups, a strolling magician and a juggler with a unicycle, the Toy Soldier stiltman was photobombing photos! There was hot food and festive treats, hot chocolate from The Second Cup to help keep you warm. A crafts table for kids where they could explain What St. Joe’s Means to Me and free pictures with Santa. It was a special night where everyone came together to share our light by lighting up St. Joe’s to celebrate the season. Thank you to the generous sponsors Cineplex Media, Bank of Montreal and Honorary Patron Salah Bachir.

TRADITIONAL CHEESECAKE

Try something new, with this creamy and delicious no-bake cheesecake recipe. This tropically-inspired spin on a traditional cheesecake features a richly flavoured toasted coconut crust, topped with a creamy avocado and zesty lime cream cheese blend.

“It's a gorgeous shade of lime green that contrasts beautifully with the garnish of red raspberries,” says Tom Filippou, executive chef for President's Choice cooking school. “This velvety dessert has the perfect amount of texture and will leave guests stunned once they learn the key ingredient.”

AVOCADO LIME + COCONUT NO-BAKE

CHEESECAKE Makes: 12 Servings

INGREDIENTS • 3/4 cup (175 mL) shredded sweetened coconut • 3/4 cup (175 mL) graham cracker crumbs

Toast coconut in dry frying pan over low heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently until golden and fragrant. Set aside to cool. STE P 03

Stir together coconut, graham crumbs, and butter. Press onto bottom of prepared pan. Chill 15 minutes.

Bring cauliflower from white tablecloth restaurants to your decorated table this holiday season. This rich comfort dish is perfect for entertaining and you can find all the ingredients you'll need to make it at your local Walmart Supercentre.

CAULIFLOWER GRATIN Serves: 8

INGREDIENTS • 1 large cauliflower, cut into florets (about 8 cups) • 1/4 cup plus 1 tbsp (75 mL) butter, divided • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 cup (60 mL) flour • 1 tsp (5 mL) mustard powder • 2 cups (500 mL) milk • 1 cup (250 mL) Swiss cheese, grated • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt • Pepper to taste • 1/3 cup (80 mL) panko breadcrumbs

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). STE P 02

Boil cauliflower in a large pot of salted water until tender-crisp, about 5 to 6 minutes. Drain and set aside. STE P 03

Melt 1/4 cup (60mL) butter in skillet over medium. Add garlic and cook 2 minutes. Whisk in flour and mustard powder and cook 1 minute. Whisk in milk and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. Stir in cheese and salt and cook until melted, about 1 minute. Season with fresh pepper. Add cauliflower and toss to coat. STE P 04

Pour skillet contents into 2 L baking dish and bake, covered, until the cheese mixture is bubbling at the sides of the dish; about 40 minutes. STE P 05

KEEP ON SMILING... Dental Disease in Pets

It is often said that a good smile changes everything, and the same is true for our furry friends. Dental disease is one of the most common diseases seen in adult dogs and cats, especially older patients. Dental disease can lead to severe pain for our pets and is often overlooked. It cannot be overstated that having a healthy mouth is key to maintaining a healthy, pain-free life for your pet. Certain breeds, particularly those with shorter mouths (brachycephalic breeds), such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, Himalayans and Persians can be more predisposed to developing dental issues because of crowding of their teeth. Certain signs that can indicate dental disease include decreased appetite, weight loss, drooling, or pets may lose interest in eating dry food. In most instances, however, the discomfort caused by dental disease can go undetected for years. THERE ARE SOME BASIC TECHNIQUES THAT CAN BE USED TO HELP MAINTAIN A HEALTHY MOUTH FOR YOUR PET: Brushing teeth: dogs and cats accumulate plaque and tartar on their teeth just like humans, and daily brushing can help limit the buildup. Although this may seem like a daunting challenge, in most cases it can be quite easily made into a routine that is enjoyable for your pet. Ideally brushing should be done for a few minutes every day, with a pet toothbrush or cloth. Generally only the outside of the teeth need to be brushed. It is important to only use pet toothpaste, as human toothpaste can be toxic to pets. Remember to always keep it positive, such as by giving your pet their favourite treat afterwards. Dental diets and ‘mouth washes’: there are numerous dental diets and water additive products that can help to limit dental disease in your pet. It is important to discuss these products with your veterinarian, as some products will work more effectively than others.

Promoting chewing: chewing can help prevent dental disease, and there are various treats and toys that can be used for this purpose. These include ‘Greenies’ chews, nylabones, dentabones. Rawhide treats can also be used, however caution needs to be taken to avoid choking. It is not recommended to offer bones, antlers, or tennis balls as these can lead to abrasions on the teeth (other types of balls such as road hockey balls are ok). PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANING: Despite our best efforts to minimize dental disease, in some cases your pet may require a professional dental cleaning through your veterinary clinic. This procedure may also be recommended by your veterinarian as a preventative measure. Remember that a healthy mouth is a happy pet, so let’s do our best to keep our pets smiling!

EKRAN POLISH FILM FESTIVAL 01

November 7th was opening night of the 8th annual Polish Film Festival which featured a docudrama by director Janusz Zaorski at the Revue Cinema. This film was a great introduction to Polish cinema which used fragments from almost 50 Polish films, arranged chronologically, to tell the story of contemporary Poland and some of the most memorable moments in Poland’s history. The film was followed by an interesting and informative Q&A session with director Janusz Zaorski. Afterwards, all were welcome for a reception at the Fantail Bakery-Cafe where guests mixed and mingled with directors and film gurus. The week long festival was organized by Ekran Polish Film Association which is a grassroots non-profit organization founded in Toronto by a group of individuals who are passionate about showcasing new media arts and films with both a Polish and multicultural focus.

02 Trans Glams Headline at Charity Auction

Raising funds for Women healing from mental health diagnoses. Every year the board of directors for George Herman House fundraiser for simple creature comforts like; nutritious food, new linens and freshly painted walls, because government funding is not enough. GHH is a unique transitional home for women who have left hospitalization and are in need of re-establishing life skills before they go on to independent living. Although understaffed, devoted program leaders oversee ten female residents as they participate in their own healthy meal preparation and housekeeping. Currently, seven board of directors aim to keep the modest facility running compassionately and financially stable.

07 Four of George Herman House’s Board of Directors Reside in the Parkdale/High Park area.

Previously a psychiatric nurse, realtor Marige K, RoncyWork’s Karyn Klaire Koski, second generation board of director’s member Sonia Shields who is a TV post production supervisor and Culture Link’s Lisa Randall all live locally. Lubna Khalid a coordinator from Women Speak Out, lawyer Karen DeBortoli and Executive Post Producer, Julia Marsh also make up the current team of volunteered directors. Together the ladies obtained $10,000 worth of donated items for auction, booked Drag Performers; Matteo Cassano’s Icons and co hosted the well attended event at the Gladstone Hotel. The three hour gathering coincided with GHH’s forty year milestone. Money raised goes towards supporting a holistic, healing environment that help the women move beyond the “coffee & cigarette” culture often associated with marginalized people. & CRAFTS MARKET On Saturday November 19th, Roncesvalles United Church held its annual Christmas Arts and Crafts Market. This extremely impressive, well organized, one-of–a-kind event had over 120 vendors selling their own work. It was a perfect place to find special gifts for the special people in your life. Mrs. Claus and her helper elves were on hand to help and the sanctuary was filled with beautiful live music. The church was beautifully decorated for this festive event.
