As we approach the end of 2016, I would like to publicly thank all my clients who I was able to help this year. You entrusted me with either the sale of your home, purchase of your home, or sometimes both. Each time you chose me as your Realtor®, I was truly & deeply honoured. Each one of you made this year not just a success, but my most successful one in 16 years of real estate and I am forever grateful to you for that. All the early mornings and late nights were worth it every single time if it meant that you were 100% happy. That is my goal every year - to ensure that my clients are 100% happy. You are the reason why I love working in the GTA. To everyone who came out to our fifth annual Photos With Santa event, thank you! It brings joy to my heart seeing all the smiles on the children’s faces. You are the reason why I love living in South Mississauga. To my husband, thank you for your love and support! I can face anything because you are by my side. Merry Christmas to you all, and may you have a bright and prosperous New Year. If there is anything you need, I am just a phone call away.

THE BASKETEERS?

WHO ARE

01

Founded in 2000, by Cheryl Stoneburgh, the original concept was "to support abused women in new beginnings." The shelters that many of us were already supporting said it was fairly easy to find groups willing to buy or sponsor Christmas gifts for children, but the abused women seemed to have been forgotten. We feel by supporting the single women and mothers, they will, in turn, find the strength to create new lives for themselves and their children. That is why our group "The Basketeers" was created. We are a generous group of around 3,500 volunteers with large hearts. We are a grass roots community based organization. We are not a registered charity and we do not issue tax receipts. Every basket donated goes to an abused woman to help them in their new beginning. On Nov 19th, over 400 people dropped off their wrapped baskets. The 2001 Titan’s Hockey Team helped unload cars. It truly was an amazing sight.

MASQUERADE BALL

What an amazing night of surprises The Mississauga Arts Council had on November 24th, to a sold out crowd! Guests were elegantly dressed with some show stopping masks. Delicious Hors d’oeuvres were circulating while a two-time Juno award-winning sax player serenaded guests. The evening combined surprising live music and dance in a comical mystery starring Mayor Bonnie Crombie and spiked with marvelous magic in one twisting entertainment, set around silent and live auctions, capped by dancing to a world DJ. It was truly a uniquely fashionable Red Capet fusion event!

Dear The Wine Ladies, With the holidays around the corner we are looking forward to enjoying at least two, possibly three turkey dinners! We are up for the challenge this year and have offered to host one of the dinners.

ASK

We were wondering what might be a couple of wines that would pair well with the big bird, and our homemade cranberry sauce! We’d like to offer a couple of red and white wine choices. - Selena

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Selena,

One of the great things about this season’s favourite bird is its ability to pair well with an array of different wines. Because the bird is fairly neutral in flavour, it can act like a chameleon, adjusting to how it partners with a wine, depending on how it is prepared, and with what it is served. Our go-to wines are fruit forward with good acidity for the whites, and fruit forward with ample acidity for the reds, along with slightly softer tannins. The big tannic reds that pucker your lips and dry out your palate are best left for the juicy red meat dishes. Specifically to your homemade cranberry sauce, a staple at our dinner table as well, you can never go wrong with a fruity delicious ZINFANDEL or a SHIRAZ. We’ve also been on a “Rhone Valley” kick in the last little while enjoying fabulous, juicy reds such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, or blended wines that include the grape Grenache, becoming increasingly more popular every day. When it comes to the preparation of the bird, while still on the reds, if simply roasted with less powerful or strong tasting spices and stuffing, you could opt for another of our favourites, a lighter bodied PINOT NOIR, juicy with good acid and delectable flavors of cherries and cranberries, or a CRU BEAUJOLAIS, also bright and fruit forward. For your white wines, whether simply prepared or more elaborate, think crisp and fruity with possibly a hint of sweetness.

Our very own cool climate RIESLINGS, with refreshing acidity, either dry or off-dry, spot on, for something a little different Austria’s Gruener Veltliner or an Alsatian Gewurztraminer would work. If you are going to go with the tried and true CHARDONNAY, best stay away from too much oak. SAUVIGNON BLANC is simply a crowd pleaser, definitely aromatic, crisp and dry, surely it too will find a partner dish on the table and most certainly multiple fans of this ever-popular varietal. One final remark, in our humble opinion, a real star, that will bring the party to life and elevate the cornucopia of flavours, is a SPARKLING WINE, elegant and versatile, the perfect partner for this festive holiday meal.

SECONDARY SCHOOL

Students, from around Peel District have applied to the school’s two Regional Programs: International Business and Technology and Graphic and Design Management. We are excited to see so many Grade 8 students, from around the region, show interest in the amazing pathways these two programs offer. Acceptances, into both programs, will occur Thursday, February 9th. We look forward to seeing many of our applicants, at Graydon, in September, 2017. Monday, December 5th, saw many of Graydon’s students start their course selections for the 2017-2018 school year. As always, students are encouraged to be mindful of their pathways, following secondary school, to ensure they meet requirements for possible college, university, apprenticeship and world of work options. If ever in doubt…please talk with any member of the school staff. Our winter sports have started. Students and staff are spending countless hours practices and playing games. Basketball, volleyball and swimming are the major winter sports running at Graydon. Outside of the regularly scheduled games/meets, our students have competed in a number of exhibition tournaments where they’ve demonstrated excellence and determination. It looks like Graydon will have another exciting sports season. The bi-annual Principal’s Reception takes place Thursday, December 15th. Students are honoured for their dedication to equity, inclusion, empathy, understanding and leadership to members of our school community. There will be over 100 students recognized for their contributions. The staff nominates all recipients and presents their nominees these merits. We are very blessed to have such an amazing group of students! During the last week of school, our Student Activity Council, will organize a number of activities to celebrate the holidays occurring over the winter break. As part of our inclusive mind-set, the school will recognize Hanukkah, Kwanza and Christmas (just to name a few). On behalf of the Graydon school community, we would like to wish all those celebrating a holiday, over the winter break, best wishes.

By: Olivia Gigone Ahhhh, finally…. the days of mid-term stress are behind us! All of those grueling weeks of studying have been replaced with anticipation of the first snowfall and the rapidly approaching winter holidays. Lorne Park will be starting December off on a high note - literally with the music class’ Vocal Night on December 1st. This unforgettable night will showcase the voices of our amazingly talented vocal class, lead by Ms. Mattiacci, a teacher new to our school. The following week, on December 6th, S.A.C. will be organizing the White Ribbon Campaign, collecting donations in exchange for a white ribbon pin to be worn in support of the cause. The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement of men and boys working to end male violence against women. It was formed by a group of pro-feminist men in London, Ontario as a response to the École Polytechnique massacre of female students by Marc Lépine in 1989. The campaign was intended to raise awareness about the prevalence of male violence against women, with the white ribbon symbolizing “the idea of men giving up their arms.” Lorne Park is just one school out of the sixty countries participating in the campaign, so as a community let’s make a difference and let our voices be heard. In athletic news, our senior varsity boys volleyball team was named the tier 2 ROPSAA champion this past month, and looking ahead to December we have the varsity boys hockey team, the alpine ski team and the girls volleyball team to look out for! On the evening of December 6th LP will be holding it’s annual football banquet, during which awards will be presented and the players will be congratulated for their hard work this season. For family and friends wanting to attend, tickets cost 25$ each and are available through your player. For the science lovers out there, students have been lucky enough to take part in several field trips this past month, such as a funfilled day at the Ontario Science centre examining the cells which make jellyfish “glow”. Keep in mind that there will be a Science Fair on December 13th, so start brainstorming!

December 15th brings even more musical cheer to Lorne Park with our annual holiday music night, in which all the music students will come together for a night of some good ol’ Christmas tunes. After all, tis’ the season! The following day, December 16th, will keep the holiday cheer going with the Mentor’s Winter Wonderland Dance, an event planned especially for our grade nine students. Tickets will be sold in the weeks prior to the event, offering a fun opportunity to miss a little class and hit the dance floor with your friends! Students are beginning the option selection process in December with Counselors visiting classes and presenting information assemblies on the process of choosing courses for next year. Parents are strongly encouraged to engage with their child in this process reviewing course choices, possible pathways for post secondary and engaging with school staff if there are questions. We are excited to also announce the arrival of the school’s new 3D printer purchased with assistance of support from donors to the legacy fund. This new printer provides students with the opportunity to work with cutting edge tech in a rapidly expanding field. Thank you to all of our legacy donors. And finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for…Presented by S.A.C. … On December 20th Santa is coming to town! Come out to the front foyer at lunch and get your picture taken with Santa and all his helpers! He only comes around once a year so don’t miss out.

Port Credit athletes and the amazing spirited demonstrated by each of them. In the months ahead we have our hockey, volleyball, swimming and boys’ basketball teams continuing and starting.

SC H OOL EVEN TS AN TI-B U LLYIN G WEEK November 21st-25th students and teachers came together to stop bullying. Many school clubs including Leadership and Student Activity Council contributed by making stands in the auditorium hallway educating others about bullying and equality and putting up posters with positive messages around the school.

R EMEMB R AN C E DAY PCSS commemorated Remembrance Day with an assembly with touching performances by the junior drama classes and a reading of In Flanders Field by the student activity council. We ended with a moment of silence and live playing of the Last Post.

Last but not least, December 23rd marks the last day of class before winter break, the day before Christmas Eve, and yes - Lorne Park’s infamous holiday assembly. Mentors, the music students, the drama students, Athletic Council and S.A.C. will all be joining forces to bring you sing-a-longs, holiday skits and everything in between.

FOOD D R IVE - We Scare Hunger #of items 350 Free the Children organized the We Scare Hunger food drive to provide support for struggling community members. All nonperishable food items collected will be donated to The Compass.

Winter is upon us at Lorne Park! Now if only it would snow…
