BEEs
DIVERSITY & IMPORTANCE There are over 20,000 species of bee in the world and that’s only the ones that have been described, there are likely thousands more that await discovery and/or description. In this talk Dr. Laurence Packer discussed the taxonomic, ecological and behavioural diversity of bees and outlined their importance for our food and environmental monitoring. There was a quick book signing at the end of the discussion where many people lined up to get their books signed by Dr. Laurence Packer. After the discussion, outside you could borrow a bat signal that attracted bats to you. It was almost scary because you couldn’t see them only hear them as they flew around your head.

RECIPE
BEAT THE HEAT WITH TRENDY
COCKTAIL POPS Are you looking for the perfect way to capture an island feeling, embrace warmer temperatures and cool down internal temperatures? Then you can look forward to creative variations on iced, slushed, and solid classic frozen and blended cocktails trending in the coming months. This includes the latest, chicest addition to any drink menu - the cocktail popsicle. Elevate the traditional piña colada by blending fresh pineapple, coconut cream and limes and serving it in an unexpected way. You can eat these frozen pops alone, or add one to a cocktail recipe for a funky, conversation-starting beverage. Bold ginger beer and dark rum round out the delicious flavours in this grown-up piña colada.

CRAZY KITTY...
the strange behaviour of cats and what it means
M
eowing at 4 am, urinating on the bed, hiding in closets, lack of self-grooming, increased aggression….what do these behaviours mean? Cats are mysterious creatures and attempts to understand the underlying motive behind their behaviour can be a frustrating endeavour. However, many behaviour changes can be indicative of an underlying medical issue and should not go ignored. Cats have evolved to hide signs of illness and often won’t show obvious clinical signs until later stages of disease. As a result, even subtle changes in your cat’s behaviour should be investigated. Here are a few things to consider when observing your cat at home: INAPPROPRIATE URINATION Most owners agree that urination outside the litterbox is the most aggravating behaviour that cats exhibit. While many people may attribute such behaviour to cats being “spiteful”, it is important to rule out underlying medical causes. Urinary tract infections and bladder stones can cause cats to urinate more frequently and they may not make it to the litterbox in time. Additionally, certain illnesses such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism, cause cats to produce larger volumes of urine which can lead to them to urinate elsewhere if the litterbox has already been used. Always ensure there are a sufficient number of litter boxes (the general rule is one litter box per cat in a household PLUS one extra) and that they are cleaned on a regular basis. CHANGES IN APPETITE Although it is generally recognized that a reduced appetite is a concern (and can be caused by various medical ailments such as dental disease, kidney disease and cancer), an increased appetite is of equal concern. Diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism are two feline illnesses characterized by a voracious appetite, usually with concurrent weight loss. Bloodwork can help differentiate these conditions from a cat that is simply overeating.
INCREASED THIRST More time spent at the water bowl or having to fill up the water bowl more frequently are clues that a cat is consuming more water. Diabetes mellitus, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism are the most common illnesses that cause increased water consumption. Your cat should have access to fresh water at all times. And if he/she is drinking more, the volume of urine produced will also be increased so you need to ensure adequate litter box hygiene. REDUCED ACTIVITY Cats generally become more sedentary as they get older but reduced activity levels should not simply be attributed to age. Cats that aren’t feeling well tend to hide which should alert owners to potential illness. Pain due to arthritis can affect the mobility of cats leading to reduced activity levels. INCREASED VOCALIZATION Vocalizing in cats may simply be an attention-seeking behaviour (for example, to demand food) but could also be a sign of something more serious such as hyperthyroidism. Reduced senses, such as blindness or hearing loss, and cognitive dysfunction in aging pets (comparable to senility in humans) can also be associated with increased vocalization. Any of the above changes in your cat’s behaviour should prompt a visit to your veterinarian where further diagnostics such as bloodwork and urine testing may be warranted to rule out an underlying medical cause. Cats are not capable of verbally telling us how they are feeling, so we must rely on changes in their behaviour to try and decipher these furry mysteries.

TRACKING BIRDS & BUTTERFLIES ACROSS BORDERS
On July 27th, the High Park Nature Centre hosted an information run by Dr. Ryan Norris. Each year, billions of migratory organisms on our planet commute vast distances between their temperate breeding grounds and tropical overwintering habitats. Using a variety of tracking technologies, Dr. Ryan Norris first shared with us how we’ve uncovered some of these incredible migrations, including record-breaking, non-stop oceanic flights by songbirds weighing less than a couple of loonies. Second, using our research on the iconic monarch butterfly, Dr. Ryan Norris showed us why tracking migratory animals over the course of their annual cycle is fundamental for understanding the effects of environment change and developing successful conservation plans.
