RIBFEST

On July 14th, Mississauga’s Celebration Square hosted the 13th annual Amacon Mississauga Rotary Ribfest. 14 vendors filled the Square selling BBQ ribs and chicken as well as several other diverse food and non-food vendors. Live entertainment is provided on the main stage, featuring a broad range of musical acts primarily focused on local talent, including Singfest, an amateur singing talent competition that culminates with the finals being held at Ribfest.

All proceeds of the event goes to the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. There are 34,000 Rotary Clubs in over 200 countries and 1.2 million business professionals and community leaders. $700 million was raised to help in eradicating polio where over 2 billion children in 122 countries were immunized. Unfortunately a downpour interrupted the great celebration, although rib lovers didn’t seem to mind and continued on with finding their favourite ribbers. 01: People gather to get a taste of the event’s amazing ribs. 02: Noelle from the Silver Bullet. 03: Vitalia, Liz, Leonie, Cresy & Jen. 04: Veronica & Rénee.

WHEN

is the right time to

DOWNSIZE? Article by: STEPHANIE HEBB

W

hether thinking of our parents or ourselves, at some point everyone asks this question and there is no one answer to it. Fundamentally, it is time to downsize when your present accommodation no longer meets your needs. There may be any of a number of reasons for this. Here are a few common reasons to consider downsizing.

TOO MU C H H O U S E . There comes a time when the house feels too big. For some, it becomes difficult to maintain such a large space, whether it is the physical act of cleaning and keeping the house in good repair or the financial repercussions of paying for space you no longer need. If there are rooms in the home that you no longer use, you might think about moving to a smaller space. Some people decide to forego a second floor and choose to move to a bungalow in which they can age more comfortably.

C L I M AT E C H A N G E . For some, the decision to downsize is based on a desire to travel the world or spend the winters somewhere warm. By downsizing here in Canada, they can afford to spend a few weeks travelling or as “snowbirds” in the South.

I N DULGE A PASSI ON . Some people choose to downsize while making it easier to do something they love. Moving closer to family or friends is a common goal. For others, moving closer to the golf course or the lake where they fish is the key. Sometimes the current home itself doesn’t suit the owner’s passion. By downsizing, it may become possible to have a workshop or garden space or dog run.

FOR T HE MON EY. Of course there may be a financial benefit to downsizing. After years of home ownership, during which the value of the home has risen, selling is a way to unlock the financial equity that has built up. Moving to a less expensive style home or a less expensive area is a way to both put money in the bank and reduce the monthly cost of living.

TOO MUCH ST UFF. Lastly, most of us accumulate way too much stuff in our homes. All that clutter can be physically and mentally draining. Downsizing is a great opportunity for the catharsis of getting rid of things you no longer need! If you are considering downsizing and need a hand, please give me a call at 905-822-6900.

How will I get you top dollar for your home? I’ll put my experience to work for you. • Expert negotiation skills • Extensive background in sales and marketing • Trusted by clients for over 20 years • Deep knowledge of the neighbourhood

HOLT RENFREW OPENS IN STYLE AT SQUARE ONE

A catwalk, cocktails, and complimentary valet parking. Sartorial splendour was teeming at Square One Wednesday evening during an exclusive VIP launch at Holt Renfrew. Anchoring the luxury wing of the downtown Mississauga mall’s south expansion, Holts, as it’s affectionately known, kicked off the event with a fashion show, followed by shopping.

“It’s amazing,” said Melany Haynes of Burlington. “The store’s huge. It’s never-ending. I don’t know where to look first.” The retailer’s 130,000 square-foot location is featuring coveted, luxe designers and ready-to-wear brands such as Helmut Lang, Prada, and Lanvin.

01

Best friends Anthony Ferrari and Rebecca Vona of Woodbridge were all about it. “The fashion show was the highlight of the evening,” said Ferrari, sipping white wine. Ferrari was buying a dark, printed Alexander McQueen scarf. “I think it’s one of the nicest stores I’ve seen,” said Vona. Kristina Pura-Cruz of Mississauga concurs. “Everybody’s dressed up and it’s very luxurious,” she said. “There’s a lot of variety and the whole atmosphere makes it more amplified.” Pura-Cruz was in line waiting for a personalized fashion caricature. An estimated 1,400 people were in attendance.

02

“Some are former customers, some are people who live in the area,” said Holts’ divisional vice-president and general manager Marcus Wyss. “For us, it’s exciting because we’ve launched new services and experiences,” including personal shopping, said Wyss. 10% of Wednesday’s sales will be donated to the Mississauga Arts Council.

YARNIN PORT BLITZ CREDIT Are you wondering what is happening in Port Credit with all the fibre artwork popping up everywhere? It is called Yarn Blitzing and it is curtesy of a group of enthusiastic volunteer who have been knitting, crocheting, and stitching tirelessly to bring some colour to the streetscape with their fun, quirky, whimsical artful creations. Check out the “Sail Pass” on the Credit River Pedestrian Bridge and you will see what I mean. They were knitting on a float in Paint The Town Red parade that was followed by a knitted “car” cozy! The theme is a 70’s retroflower power reflecting Putting on the Blitz as it celebrates the Port Credit BIA’s 40th anniversary. Each creation usually has a theme to match where they are put, such as the tree guard by La Villa Bakery has cookies and bagels.

01: Marie Rose, Sandrina, Bindu, Cheryl, Kate, Cathy, Ina, Jane, Jody, Gail & Susan. 02: Yarn Blitzers in the Paint The Town Red parade. 03: Kate decorating a bicycle with her yarn.

Susan, who is the visionary and fearless leader of the Blitzers invited Community Captured to come and meet this very interesting and diverse group at a secret location. Kate is the oldest in the group and has crocheted many of the bike guards. Sandrina is a newbie. Marie Rose loves doing the pom-poms. Cathy just loves to knit. Bindu is from India and staying for four months. She was involved in holding the Guiness Book of World Records for the largest crocheted (11,148 square metre) blanket in the world. Jane loved putting the car cozy together and making the flowers for the flower wall. Jody works on a Loom and is making loom flowers. She also did the appliqué piece for The Brogue. Ina came to PC 2 years ago from Montreal and has made good friends though this dynamic group. Gail won the Civic Recognition Award for all her knitting contributions to many charities. A few of the missing ladies that evening were Kate, Heather, Agnes, Kathryn, Mary, Michelle, Doreen, Linda, Marney, Sarah, Maria, Valerie, June, Lynn, Oriana, Laurie, Pat and Ellen and BIA staff. Linda at Linda’s Craftique, Martha at Ladybug Harbor and Maria, Port Credit Library. The recurring comments from all these wonderful ladies were that they love the camaraderie and appreciate each others talents. The retailers love and appreciate their unique gifts. The Blitzers usually work at night and in secret so keep an eye out to see where the next unique piece will be!

Dear The Wine Ladies,

ASK

We are finally finished with our kitchen renovations and are ready to purchase some wine glasses for entertaining. The choices of stemware out there are overwhelming. Unfortunately, due to the underestimated costs of the reno (vastly underestimated), the budget for our stemware is somewhat limited. Can you help? - Linda

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Linda,

True enough, selecting the right glass, or best glass for you and your purposes can be a daunting experience, given the many options but it doesn’t have to be. Although there are specific glasses designed for an array of grape varietals, regions and occasions, there are a few basic wine glasses, reasonably priced, that will satisfy most of your needs. The very well known company Riedel, actually 11th generation, whose product is readily found, manufactures some of the finer and finest glasses for both enjoyment and technical purposes. They have in their range, from the uncomplicated beginner series called Overture to the Sommelier Maxi series for the more experienced palate that come in at a range of pricing. To start, a few basic considerations and you can’t go wrong...

THIN IS IN… or ideal for wine enjoyment that is. Opt for glassware that has a fine rim, too thick or patterned takes away from the intimacy of the wine with the wine drinker and the appearance, patterned or coloured stemware limits the view and the potential clarity and brilliance.

BIGGER IS BETTER… to a point.

To the choice selection, begin by deciding on how specific you would like your collection of stemware to be. Given a certain budget, perhaps one great glass for the whites and one for the reds might be a good starting point. It’s always better to start off with a great basic rather than a variety of lesser quality stemware aimed to cover the gamut of varietals, styles, regions etc as discussed above.

Select a glass that has a fairly generous bowl, ample enough to swirl the wine without losing any of the precious contents, ample enough to swirl and enhance the enjoyment of the bouquet, much more available when swirled. And while on the topic, not spilling, fill the glass only about a third full to allow the best of swirling!

We’d recommend you head out to one of the specialty stores and chat up one of the salespeople. They’re often extremely knowledgeable and more than willing to share their expertise and ready to assess your needs according to your budget.

THE SISTER CITY OF MISSISSAUGA...

KARIYA, JAPAN

01 In 1981, two cities from opposite ends of the world created what is now a lasting relationship of friendship and cultural experience. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of this historic event, Mississauga families opened their doors to delegates from our sister city, Kariya, Japan, a city of 145,000 people found between Kyoto and Tokyo, including it’s Mayor, Mayor Takenaka, as they visited our city, many for the first time. The relationship proposal was introduced in the 1950’s as a means of reducing misunderstandings and conflict between nations post World War II. Through the relationship, both cities have gained learning opportunities, cultural and educational exchanges, as well as increased global reputation and trade. Mississauga is host to nearly 100 Japanese companies that contribute to our local economy, strengthening the ever growing bond with the Japanese City. In 1992, Kariya Park opened as a display of our friendship and the celebration of the 11th anniversary. The park is located near the civic centre on Kariya Drive just south of Burnhamthorpe and embodies a piece of Japan here in Canada. The two cities worked closely together to create this peaceful space of serenity in the heart of a busy, bustling city. Featuring a tranquil lake, wonderful cherry blossoms, and many gifts given to us from Kariya, this park showcases our close relationship with our sister city. A year later in 1993, the Mississauga Friendship Association was created to keep strong ties with the twin city. Mayor Takenaka, along with three other delegates arrived on June 29th for five days packed with many activities. We were pleased to

have Mayor Takenaka and his delegates participate in two Canada day celebrations including partaking in Port Credit’s ‘Paint the Town Red’ parade as well as the festivities in Celebration Square. On June 30th, the Mayors of both cities participated in a gift exchange with a hand drum performance by Kim Wheatley from the ‘Mississaugas of the New Credit’. Mayor Bonnie Crombie presented Mayor Takenaka with an Ojibway hand drum created by Canadian artist Destiny Rae. In return, Mayor Takenaka presented Mayor Crombie with a Japanese suit of amour. For the rest of his time in Canada, Mayor Takenaka visited a number of Toyota companies in Mississauga and attended a dinner with Mayor Crombie before leaving on July 4th to go back to Japan. On July 6th, Mississauga residents welcomed 10 delegates from the Kariya International Friendship Association. The group of delegates were made up of men and women of different ages and walks of life making the experience for both groups especially rewarding. Many of the delegates had never been to Canada before, and enjoyed experiencing our food and culture for the first time. They spent their time in Canada exploring what our city has to offer, visiting Niagara Falls for a day, and participating in the Japan Festival on their last day before leaving on July 11th.
