ummer or winter, your backyard can become a studio for bird photography. The key is a feeder near a natural feature, such as a small tree (1). Many birds, including the Baltimore Oriole, will seek a safe perch before flying to the feeder. This is where the most natural-looking photos are possible (2,3). A branch can be attached to the feeder, giving the bird a final perch before the feeder (4). Photos at the feeder are the least appealing (5) but do verify that orioles like grape jelly. The photographer was sitting quietly 10 meters from the feeder. Needless to say, the longer the telephoto lens, the better.

BLOOR WEST STREET FEST BY JASMIN EL-TAHRY

he Bloor West Street Festival was alight with giggles and excitement on July 14th. The all-day event was filled to the brim with fun family activities. Animals both pawed and clawed churned up some cheer; the President’s Choice Super Dogs dog shows and Reptilia Mobile Zoo charmed all. Not a fan of the fur and scales? Well there was plenty more to do: the princess Meet & Greet, the Monkey Movers Gym Bus and face painting were a delight to attend. Grumbling tummies could be quickly quieted by a quick trip to one of the food trucks or vendors. This festival will surely live on as a precious memory for all who attended.

MASTER MECHANIC SUPERHERO DAY BY JOSIE CANDITO

n July 28th, Master Mechanic High Park celebrated Superhero day in full-fashion. They got in-costume and #InMyFeelings. Outside of the shop, there is a mural with the amazing staff dressed as superheroes, as they are truly our daily heroes. The team traded in their coveralls for the capes to dress as the superheroes they portray on the mural! It was a fun-filled day with friends, food, photos and lots of laughs!

ST.JOE’S RECEIVES $10 MILLION DONATION n July 11th, thanks to a transformative $10 million donation by Myron and Berna Garron, St. Joe’s hospital will be able to purchase two new MRI machines and double its testing capacity. Every year, more than 182,000 imaging tests are run at St. Joseph’s Health Centre to support the treatment of the half a million west-end residents the hospital serves. Of these, about 15,000 are MRI tests, performed on a machine that runs 24/7. The hospital celebrated the donation by renaming Our Lady of Mercy Wing to Garron Family Our Lady of Mercy. For more information on St. Joe’s Health Centre visit stjoestoronto.ca and for details on the St. Joe’s Health Centre Foundation go to supportstjoes.ca.

Dear Wine Ladies,

ASK

We are quickly becoming fans of the red wines of Bordeaux and recently heard someone refer to Bordeaux as Claret. Is Claret a kind of wine from Bordeaux or is it from a different region? Also, I have heard the term Meritage from Bordeaux, what is the difference? - Jackie

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Jackie, The term claret is actually a moniker if you will, used mostly by the British for the red wines of Bordeaux, with its origin dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. During this time period the red wines of Bordeaux were generally much lighter in colour and much paler. The word claret comes from the Latin word clarus that means “clear.” These days although not so commonly used claret is used as a general term for the red wines of Bordeaux, as well as red wines made in the Bordeaux style. The grapes permitted to make red Bordeaux are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, either as single varietal wines or any blend of the five. Meritage wines are not from Bordeaux, rather they are wines blended with the traditional noble grape varietals of Bordeaux. The term Meritage, which rhymes with heritage combines “merit” meant to reflect the quality of the grapes, and “heritage” recognizing the centuries-old tradition of blending, long considered being the highest form of the winemaker’s art. Wines labelled Meritage first 12

COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

dennispedersen.com

appeared in the late 1980s after a group of American vintners joined forces to create a name for New World wines blended in the tradition of Bordeaux. In 1988, The Meritage Association was formed issuing licenses strictly to wines meeting specific criteria.

RE CIPE

This is a perfect pass around summer appetizer. The eggplant rounds are a great replacement for the usual baguette bruschetta. You can grill the eggplant well in advance, they do not need to be served warm. You can make the bruschetta toping several hours ahead, just remember, never refrigerate tomatoes! Put it all together last minute. Serves: 10

Ingredients P E R F EC T G R I L L E D EG G P L A N T R O U N D S

• 2 small Eggplants • Sea Salt for sprinkling

Directions

• Olive Oil for brushing on the eggplant

ST E P 0 1 / Grilled Eggplant Rounds: Preheat the grill to med high. ST E P 02 / Slice eggplants in 1/4 1/2 inch rounds, lay out on a large sheet of paper towel. ST E P 03 / Sprinkle with sea salt and

let stand for 20 minutes, the eggplant will sweat. Blot the slices dry with paper towel. ST E P 04 / Brush each slice of

eggplant with olive oil on both sides (don’t miss spots).

ST E P 0 5 / Grill the slices for about 5 minutes per side, the slices should be golden brown on each side and a little crispy, you may need more time. Place the rounds on a platter. ST E P 0 6 / Bruschetta Mixture: Sea-

son the tomatoes with salt and put them in a colander to drain for 5-10 minutes (or longer). Transfer tomatoes to a bowl and fold in remaining ingredients, season with salt and freshly ground pepper. ST E P 07 / Top each round with the

bruschetta mixture.

B R U S C H E T TA M I X T U R E

• 1 box Cherry Tomatoes, each tomato sliced in 8 tiny pieces, chop 1/4 inch dice • Sea Salt to taste • 1 clove Garlic, chopped finely • 1/2 tsp dried Oregano • 1 Green Onion, white and light green part only, chopped fine • 5-6 Basil Leaves, chopped finely • 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Jackie’s Garden at 233 Roncy

GREEN TEAM PROFILE:

JACKIE TASCHEREAU BY RONCESVALLES VILLAGE BIA

ackie Taschereau has been volunteering with RoncyWorks since 2011. She maintains the gardens at 233 and 223 Roncesvalles. Jackie often refers to her involvement with RoncyWorks as gardening in the “Public Realm” and for a good reason. There are many lessons she’s learnt from maintaining a sidewalk garden, including how the physical design of the bed impacts how the public interacts with it. “The slightly raised edge of a planter bed is an irresistible challenge to small children, demanding to be walked along to prove balance skills. This is preceded and followed by hopping on and off the bench.” Another challenge of Jackie’s and her RoncyWorks volunteers is protecting the gardens from doubling as urban landfills. “Probably as much time is spent picking

16

COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

up garbage as is actually spent on gardening.” The litter that Jackie and other gardeners have to deal with often includes “cigarette butts and packs, coffee cups, food containers and remains, wrappers, soda cans and plastic bottles.” Despite these setbacks, Jackie has found the benefits of tending to sidewalk gardens enriching in many ways. “I now have far better knowledge of tough plants that will survive in shade or partial shade.” Another unforeseen benefit of gardening has been meeting people from all walks and a newfound understanding of the importance of public gardens to communities. “I’ve got to talk to all sorts of people on the street, whom I would never otherwise have had conservations with,” said Jackie. “I find myself looking at public plantings all over the city, noticing what works and where there are problems.”
