Looking back over the past three years, we have so much to be proud of and we’ve only just begun. For the fourteenth straight year, Mississauga retains its Triple-A credit rating. It’s an important part of our value proposition to attract and retain foreign-direct investment opportunities. We held a series of city-wide initiatives to strengthen professional networks for entrepreneurs, business owners and ambitious youth. We’re on track to get construction underway in 2018 to build the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. The 20 kilometer - 22 stop LRT - will connect GO Train stations from Port Credit and Cooksville. Mississauga’s growing residential and employment population reinforces our bigger efforts to bring about all-day, two-way, GO Train service on the Milton and Kitchener lines with our Missing Link plan. We’ve built Lean into the City of Mississauga’s DNA. Budget 2018 projected savings of nearly $3 million of taxpayers’ hard-earned money. This means a savings of nearly $52 million over the past decade. Making Room for the Middle is our bold new housing strategy to increase the supply of housing for middle income earners. During the 2017 Mayor’s City-Wide Food Drive, we raised $225,409 and collected 265,611 pounds of food. In closing, let me wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Warmest Regards,
Bonnie Crombie, MBA, ICD.D, Mayor, City of Mississauga

CHILDHOOD AMNESIA:
WHAT WILL YOUR CHILDREN REMEMBER?
W
e have all experienced “Do you remember when you were little…” questions and although you know it was part of your life, you are at a loss to recall the actual memory. What will your children remember?
Psychologists have been interested in the phenomenon known as childhood amnesia for decades. Researchers have surmised that 7 year olds recall 60% of their earlier childhood events but at age 7 or 8 they remember less than 40%. Researchers, like Professor of Psychology at Emory University Patricia Bauer, say is the onset of childhood amnesia. Memories that persist are those that carry a lot of emotion, or have structure and context. For example, children rarely remember what gift they received for Christmas on any given year, unless it was a new pet of course, but they remember if they were upset because a parent was injured and required a visit to the hospital. Why? Because of the strong emotion of fear for the parent, the story of how the parent was injured, what the hospital looked like and the detail surrounding the injury itself.
Parents can help a child retain positive memories through awareness in building context, shape and structure of the story. For example, give the gift of karate training and they will forever remember that Christmas. They will remember putting on the uniform and white belt right away and they will remember being excited about going to class. Opening a gift that will last a lifetime, with the memory of receiving it, is priceless.

Mayor Bonnie Crombie stated, “Being named a member of Legends Row is the highest honour a citizen of Mississauga can achieve.” For the following people, this award is just one of many achievements in their lifetime. Dr. Ruth Hussey was the driving force behind the 14-year-long public campaign that eventually resulted in the acquisition of Rattray Marsh in the mid 1970’s and saved it from being developed.
03
n Saturday, November 4th, the Erin Mills Town Centre was filled with many amazing Mississauga residents and their supporters. This year, seven Mississauga residents were inducted to the Mississauga Legends Row Walk of Fame. The list of special citizens includes; Dr. Ruth Hussey (1915-1984), John Wood (1950-2013), Gary Clipperton, George Stroumboulopoulos, Robert J. Sawyer, Willson McTavish and our former Mayor, Hazel McCallion. Alongside these legends were Mayor Bonnie Crombie, Master of Ceremonies Jake Dheer as well as Ron Duquette, President and Founding Director of Mississauga Legends Row. The Ceremony also featured an inspiring live performance by local band “From Far & Wide.” There is so much for Mississauga to be proud of and this event illuminated the many great people who have demonstrated global, national and local success in a variety of fields.
John Wood was a three time Olympian; the first Canadian to win an Olympic medal on Canadian soil and the first Mississaugan to win an Olympic medal. He trained out of the Mississauga Canoe Club and is credited with inspiring other athletes and kickstarting Canada’s run of success in the sport of canoe/kayak after his podium appearance. 12 • C O M M U N I T Y C A P T U R E D . Gary Clipperton is very active within Streetsville. First, he founded and directed the Streetsville based charity choral group, JUSTUS, which performed throughout Mississauga, Canada and abroad for 40 years. He also served his community as founding director of the Bread ‘n Honey Festival, as well as helping create the Meadowvale Theatre, among many other endeavors. George Stroumboulopoulos is a broadcast veteran in television and radio. In fact, he is one of the most trusted and respected broadcasters in Canada. George is also a passionate advocate of many social and environmental issues worldwide and has been an active supporter of numerous causes throughout his successful career. Robert J. Sawyer is one of Canada’s most prolific authors and has been called the Dean of Canadian science fiction. He is one of only eight writers in history (and the only Canadian) to win all three of the science-fiction field’s top honours for best novel of the year.
08
Among his many contributions to the Arts in Mississauga, Willson McTavish was the Founding Chair of the Mississauga Arts Council, President of the Mississauga Symphony and the visionary of the Living Arts Centre, spending five years of research and writing reports for City Council in order to get this important community project off the ground. Hazel McCallion is the longest serving mayor in the city’s history, having served for 36 years at the time of her retirement in 2014. Her supporters gave her the nickname “Hurricane Hazel” because of her outspoken political style. Hazel guided the new City of Mississauga through an unprecedented period of growth and prosperity. Her life is historic and her legacy legendary.

by famous works of art and they are displayed and sold at the Streetsville Tearoom. The gorgeous teapot paintings are sold for thirty dollars apiece. All funds go to children in need.
November has been a busy month at Streetsville Secondary School, especially for the school’s sports teams. This month, the Senior girls and both the junior and senior Boys rugby teams won the Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) championship. The teams went head to head with different schools across the Region of Peel, and came out on top! It was quite a nail biter as the SSS Senior boys volleyball team competed for the ROPSSAA championship. Everyone was on the edge of their seats, but after a nerve-wracking five sets, Streetsville triumphed. They went on to the Ontario championship where they made it to the quarter finals. The school could not be prouder of the accomplishments of all of their teams.
In order to raise money, and awareness, for men’s health, the Tiger Leadership Council, has done a variety of things around the school. They have done a great deal, including selling Movember themed homemade buttons. The buttons are being sold for fifty cents each, and all the proceeds will be going to the Movember Foundation.
HIGH SCHOOL
In November Streetsville also has anti-bullying week. Some uplifting anti bullying videos were shown school-wide to raise awareness. Candy grams were also being sold as a way to unite the students, and give them a way to show their friends that they care. On top of all this, students were encouraged to stop by the cafeteria and join in on some friendship-bracelet-making fun! Streetsville also invited Kevin Vowles from the White Ribbon Campaign Jeff Perera from the national Speakers Board who will both address health relationships. For any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the school at 905-826-1195, or visit the website at www.streetsvillesecondary.com. This month, the school also hosted an indigenous elder from U of T guest speaker. He came in to share an assortment of stories, as well as Indigenous history. His expression of Indigenous belief systems was riveting, and the students were highly engaged. The school is thrilled that he took time to come and speak to the staff and students. On November 10, the school came together to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought and continue to fight for our freedom. It was a beautiful and touching ceremony. This Remembrance Day assembly really put life into perspective, and reminded everyone to stop and take a moment to reflect on everything that has been done to make Canada the wonderful country that it is. LVLUP Athletics
LvlUP has some suggestions to keep you motivated, spend family time, as well as head outdoors during this festive season. Many public rinks across town have free skating hours, so why not lace-up and take the whole family out on the ice. Pack some hot chocolate to stay warm, and continue the outdoor activity with a nice hike on open trails. Whether you celebrate it or not, there are many local Christmas markets to visit. These are great areas for the kids as they cater to them with various activities, as well as great places to find those last minute gifts. Many community and fitness centres such as LvlUP, will be open with special holiday hours. These are great places for everyone to have fun and move together. Need something a little closer to home? Have a stroll around your neighbourhood and see all the beautiful decorations.
HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES the family h t i w
eeping the family entertained during the holidays can seem like a tedious task. Two weeks of no school or the “normal” routine to keep everyone busy can make things challenging. There are a few local and In-Home activities, which can help you survive and stay balanced throughout the holiday season, without throwing your healthy habits out the window.

If you would rather remain indoors during this time of year, why not dust off some old board games or cozy up with the family by the fireplace to watch some classic holiday shows or movies. There are tons of healthy recipes for baking some festive treats, as well as many creative ways to build a gingerbread house without punishing your waistline. Designing personal handcrafted decorations are all great ways to have everyone work together and spend some quality family time. Be safe this holiday season and let’s all be grateful for the time we share together, whether it be with family, friends or co-workers.
