SOFT WATER VS. HARD WATER:
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? the efficiency of your appliances will plummet. If your water is high on the water hardness scale, you might also notice effects on your personal hygiene. Hard water can leave a feeling of residue on your hands, skin, and hair upon washing. As a result, your hair and skin may feel more dry and brittle. It is up to your water supplier to test water hardness before distributing it to your community. Luckily, you can still combat water hardness by softening your water. Using a water softener can reduce impurities in your water, including calcium and magnesium. What does this mean for you and your home? Cleaner water, appliances, hair, and skin.
WHAT IS SOFT WATER?
WATER IS WATER, RIGHT? NOT QUITE. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF WATER THAT COULD BE IN YOUR HOME: HARD VS. SOFT WATER. That said, there’s a good chance it’s the latter. So, what is the difference between soft water vs. hard water and how does it affect you? Here’s everything you should know about the hardness of water.
WHAT IS HARD WATER? Hard water is the excessive presence of calcium and magnesium - two naturally-occurring minerals in water. The higher amount of these minerals that are present in water, the higher it will rank on the hard water scale. While both essential to everyday health, calcium and magnesium are not essential for water usage. In fact, hardness in water can have detrimental effects on your home. When using water for cleaning purposes, you may notice spots or a film of residue on your dishes, shower, or clothing. Not to mention, you may find particles inside of your appliances like the dishwasher or laundry machine. When hard water is heated, calcium deposits can form. If this builds up, it can greatly damage the performance and lifespan of your appliances. This includes your pipes and even your coffee machine. To make matters worse, your heating costs will skyrocket and

Without calcium and magnesium, soft water can prevent scale buildup around your home including your appliances and pipes. Cucumber salad gets better as it sits. Make this several hours ahead of time and leave it at room temperature. It will last several days in the fridge. I love serving this with grilled meat, chicken, fish or burgers. The flavours are super simple and go with just about everything! Serves 8.
INGREDIENTS • 1 English cucumber • 1/4 cup rice vinegar • 1 tsp sesame oil • 1 tsp honey or sugar • 1/2 tsp kosher salt • 1 tbsp toasted black and white sesame seeds
DIRECTIONS STEP ONE: Using a knife, slicer on a food processor or mandolin, slice the cucumber into 3mm slices. Place slices in a mediumsize mixing bowl. STEP T WO: Drizzle the vinegar and oil over the cucumbers, sprinkle with the honey and salt, mix and toss together very well. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, toss. STEP THREE: Let marinate at room temp for about 30 minutes or longer before serving. Toss again before serving. ◆

The kitchen continues to be one of the best ways to increase a home’s value, but I don’t mean kitchens in their traditional form. A real estate analysis revealed that homes with outdoor kitchens sold for 25% more than expected (source: Zillow, 2017). As modern homes get smaller in square footage, homeowners are increasingly focusing their

attentions on the outdoors to make the most of every inch of their living space - inside and out. Recently, the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) uncovered what’s trending in outdoor kitchen design. Here are some top trends, and how to achieve them.

The NKBA report reveals that the vast majority of homeowners (84%) use professional installers for at least part of their outdoor kitchen installation. 64% of homeowners used a designer, 41% used a landscape or garden architect/specialist, while 10% used an architect. Take a cue, and consider working with an expert from the get-go. A kitchen addition involves many moving parts. Add the outdoor element to an already complicated renovation and you can be sure that there will be lots to think about, from functionality and durability to style.
