Driving to the gym for my regular workout at 6:00 am, I count the number of people I see who are up and about, doing their exercise, before the daily grind takes over. It’s comforting, in a way, to see other dedicated people making the effort to get up early and making it happen. Trust me, it’s not easy!

Sixteen, that’s the number of people I see on my 10 minute, 2.5 mile drive down to the PCH gym, I attend. Those 16 individuals, out of a few thousand that live in the area, wake up early and push themselves to do exercise to be healthy, strong, and better. Sixteen people who make an everyday commitment. Yes, I do see a few new faces from time to time braving the elements of the California winter. But inevitably they drop off after a few days as they experience the harsh reality that wanting and doing are two separate journeys.

I grew up in South Africa, where TV was not allowed into the country for many years. When it was finally introduced, my Dad, the strict, tough guy that he was, forbid a TV in our house. Being a tennis fanatic family, we finally convinced him to hire a TV just so we could watch Wimbledon.

So every year during my entire school career, we had a rented TV for two weeks only, WOW! Being able to see our tennis heroes, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, and Guillermo Vilas live on TV was such a treat! What fun, watching every match blow by blow! Thirty years ago, in 1985, we were spellbound watching Kevin Curren, a South African player, having beaten McEnroe, Connors and Edberg, on his way to the final. Dare to Dream! Finally we had a South African to cheer for, with a huge serve and volley, which on grass is a deadly combo.

He was to play a 17 year old, unseeded German in the final, Boris Becker. Could our country finally have a Wimbledon champion? But as you

tennis fanatics out there know, Becker shocked the world to go all the way in 4 sets, and later winning a further two Wimbledon titles in his career. Damn, he was good!

Watching these champions, I dreamed of becoming a tennis pro. But dreaming and doing are two separate journeys. The dream is free, but the journey is not. No dream ever comes true without paying a price for it. That usually means sacrifices of many kinds, money, time, fun, fear, pain and discomfort. At 12, although I would get to State, I wasn’t ready to give it all up and focus on just one thing.

This month we launched our 46th magazine nationally, TheHomeMag Riverside. Starting a new endeavor is never easy, no matter how many you may have started in the past. Every business or magazine I have started and grown has taken its mental and physical toll on me. It’s a risk which may or may not work out, unless you are totally committed for the long term.

Ultimately what separates the winners from the rest, are the ones that make a concise decision to grow. It’s not an automatic process, and it does not happen by accident. It’s an intentional choice to be the best you can be, regardless of the obstacles that will inevitably appear. If one is too scared to take the challenges and the risks, one can never grow, and this applies to all aspects of our lives.
