One Natalie Pak People are shouting, And they like shouting. But the sounds in my head Are laughing at me, screaming. Then I wish everything would stop, Everybody would stop. That the enticing whispers should Just stop for once! And my face is burning, And my spine is chilling, And the sounds, And the noises, the shouting And suddenly Everything is quiet. Suddenly, everything is quiet. It’s still, but not exactly still. It’s the kind of quiet Like the sound of embers Crackling in your fireplace, (“My heart burns there, too!”) Or the sound of autumn winds Carrying bold maple leatves. (“You carry me through the night!”) I feel alive for the first time. It’s nice to clear my thoughts And keep myself awfully Focused on just one. One who carries me through the dark, One who makes me choke on rose petals, One who swings a bat to my heart, One who forces butterflies down my throat. Everything is perfect, And it will last Forever. And ever. (I hope.)

Fools Aamna Shehzad Laughing, grinning, smiling fools Talking about happiness as if they have it Talking about dreams as if they have any Living life so peacefully Laughing with each other like they know they will be together forever Not knowing what the world is Claiming to be kind, compassionate, caring But sick and rotten at the core Claiming to know fear, anger, despair The most negative emotion they’ve probably felt is jealousy Taking things for granted Thinking they’re so special They live in their own world In their imaginations They probably don’t even feel grateful Laughing, grinning, smiling fools Talking about love as if they have any

Can You Hear Me? Aamna Shehzad Hello? Can you hear me? I’m right here, beside you! Why are you ignoring me? It’s not like you to act like this Afterall, Hi again! How are you feeling today? I hope that you’re well Just sit down and let me calm your mind It’s my life’s purpose To be a helper, a teacher, a friend You walk with me Talk with me Tell me things React to what I say You put all of your trust in me You rely on me You completely depend on me

It’s not in your nature to ignore me

It’s not in your nature to feel calm without me

So why are you going away now? Are others more important than me? Look at me! You always do! You’re the one who’s always bothering me! Every single second of my life, you keep me at hand! It’s like you’re glued to me! I didn’t want it to be that way

Woops! I’m so sorry for shouting at you like that! I just don’t feel like myself today... I want to help you, teach you, help you reach out to others, It’s not in your nature to stay mad at me for long After all, you need me You can’t go out in the world alone! You’re making my job easier for me too You want to fall into the pit of mindless obsequiousness You want to get lost in the voices of many others You care about what they say about you You wanted to feel accepted, so you let yourself get judged It’s in your nature to want to feel validated

Hey I know this isn’t working out So, I guess it’s bye for now? I hope you’re happy that you’re letting go of me But tell me something, Can you really let go of me? You see, you thought that you could take advantage of me, but it ended up the other way around, even though I had no intention to I trapped you in a void, even though I don’t even know what it is I manipulated you, even though I didn’t know how to It’s in your nature to be easily manipulated But isn’t it funny? You want to leave me But you can’t No matter what you do I will always be with you I will always be staring at you, and you will always be staring at me I will always be by your side and you will always keep me by your side If I die, you can easily replace me, but my influence on you lasts forever It tends to You were my project, and I got an A+ I try restricting your will, and you comply I did my job and you followed my every step willingly You made everything so easier for me So, thank you! I guess I’m done using you Who has the last laugh now? It’s in your nature to give up

Privilege Anonymous as a naive girl who has never worked a job, gone hungry because she had to, or earned a single penny of what she owns, I have struggled to grasp the scope of my privilege – just how terribly wonderful it is. perhaps I still haven’t fully purged myself of a false sense of entitlement. because right now, I should be happy. but instead there’s guilt. it’s so easy to call Asian culture as superficial, to criticize it as far too hung up on mere numbers. but when I fail banknotes flash before my eyes. each and every one of my shortcomings diminishing my parent’s investment. burdened to manifest the figures of my supposed worth.
