A Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you all.

As I sit and write this editorial, Devon is moving into Tier 3 of CV-19 Lock down restrictions. Not the best way to end the year, but in this uncertain time, not surprising.

So we start 2021 with not knowing much regarding the future of our organised rides. Is this a problem?, not in the wider scale of life. In comparison to what other people are dealing with it is somewhat eclipsed. And while what we do may seem small against all of this, it does have a greater resonance.

Newlyweds!

Festive Challenge.

Graham Brodie has created a rather fun 12 Days of Christmas riding challenge. Please see over page the items you will need to find during the festive period. It can be done is a many or as little rides you wish to do. It is not a competition, but merely a motivation to go and explore your local area and burn off some of those extra calories consumed at home.

Huge congratulations to Gavin Fothergill and Annie Seward who got married on 16th December 2020, the same week as Annie’s Birthday.

We are sure they have a continuation of their world travels planned once the CV19 situation is resolved.

We’ve been gathering a bit of money during the year, some donations in lieu of not visiting cafes in the Lockdown, some donations from sale of s/h bikes, and some refunds for event entries which were donated, which meant we were able to give a £500 donation to the Homeless In Teignbridge Support food-bank. It’s an appalling fact that there are now more S e p t / O c t

food-banks in the UK than there are Mc.Donalds outlets!

Hopefully some people will be able to enjoy a happier Christmas thanks to the donation.

In recent years

happy winter cycling for me largely correlates to the warmth in my hands, so on an Audax a couple of years when I spotted somebody riding with Bar Mitts, I knew I just had to try them. So what are they? They are made of insulated neoprene, not dissimilar to insulated overshoes, presumably dry-suit material. They strap and seal to the top and bottom of the bars to create a pocket in which to insert your hand and hold onto the hoods. This creates a sheltered environment in which your hands are buffered from rain, wind and cold. The fabulous thing I have found with them is that you can therefore cycle wearing reasonably light gloves thereby retaining dexterity in the fingers. In cold wet weather I do wear shower proof gloves as well. They will not suit everyone however, and the ability to retain full control of the bike in any situation whilst the hands are on the hoods is essential.

So what are the advantages: 1.Keeping the hands largely dry without creating clammy and damp skin; 2.No need to wear cumbersome and restrictive heavy gloves to keep hands warm; 3.Not having to change in and out of wet weather gloves in showery conditions; Avoiding the struggle with misplaced glove liners; 4.Gloves are dry when returning to the bike after a coffee stop 5.Aero dynamic design so far as head S e p t / O c t

But there are disadvantages to manage too: 1.It is not possible to use the lower bar position and therefore the main brake levers; 2.Putting hands back in the bar mitt requires vigilance, not difficult to do, but possible to get wrong; 3.Restricting handhold positions on the bars can lead to aching hands; 4.The larger surface area of the bar mitt will be caught by strong winds; 5.The mitts do not look cool; 6.When stowed the mitts are a little bulky, I guess similar to a size 13 insulated overshoe.

Overall I have found the bar mitt to be beneficial and desirable to use on colder showery days, and on rides when temperatures fall into the lower single figures

On arrival

at the car park at Blunts, it was nice to see Graham John put in an appearance. Of course, that made Trevor & I outnumbered by three on e-bikes in the end. So after a heavy downpour hiding in the cars, we got underway & soon arrived at Gang, where we all turned left into a Trevor lane complete with flooded water. I had to start showing off by riding fast through the water & getting my feet wet. I noticed Trevor wasn’t far behind when he realised he was missing out on the fun that I was having. At one point I lost direction but Dave came to my rescue, as we all know he is king to route-finding in South East Cornwall. Soon we climbed up to Redgate, then down to Golitha Falls for a wellearned elevenses. I saw Trevor filling his face with a huge piece of fruit cake, closely followed by me with a mincemeat flapjack which puts a whole new meaning on little & often.

Soon back on our bikes & heading up the drainpipe road. Aptly named because of it consistently flood, with today being no exception, as I continued to lead through the puddles. It was good really, because it wasn’t raining and I was managing to stay wet, mind you it was a bit on the cold side. Soon we arrived at Dave’s favourite climb, well it is now he has motor assistance. Now up on Bodmin moor proper, we took in Dozmary pool & Colliford Lake (reservoir). Not to mention all the different kinds of cattle including S e p t / O c t

my favourite highland breed. You know the ones with the shaggy coat & massive horns. Soon we all descended to Treverbyn bridge (Clapper bridge 1412 River Fowey) for a photo opportunity, taken care of by Trevor’s super phone. Rest over, it was on up to the junction where we decided to go over the A38 and take the dryer lane into Liskeard. Graham J mentioned it was a first for him. Within the warmth of The King Doniert pub. Here I even had a beer(Thankyou Dave). I then felt peckish so shared my malt loaf slices with Graham B. Outside whilst mounting our trusty steeds I spotted Dave Byfield of Liskeard CTC talking to Dave N, I wished him a happy Christmas & a safe New Year. Now it was over the usual route back to Blunts and to the finish on what turned out to be, on the whole, a dry day - all though a bit on the chilly side. Mind Dave & Graham B were warm in their new jackets, although Graham is sending his back because it has got a bump in the front.

The Sunday

ride again became the Saturday, due to the weather, it was still very cold but mainly dry. Plympton was the start and I had only a rough idea how to get up to Lee Moor from the start, then Trevor jumped into the breach and led us on an interesting route of back lanes that led to the cross roads near the Moorland Hotel, Wotter.

From here I was back to the front taking the road over Cadover bridge and then taking a right along a high scenic road and down to Sheepstor, it was here John, not feeling to well decided to make his way back to Yelverton and to his car. We rode around Burrator reservoir before going up a steep climb and across the Princetown road to Sampford Spiney, there David left S e p t / O c t

us to make his way back home for warmth and footy!Â

After a pleasant stop it was the last leg of the journey back to Plympton going along the Drakes Trail, with Trevor parting company with Graham J. and myself at Clearbrook, and we made our way back to Plympton with 41 miles covered, and for Trevor having rode in from Ivybridge, 51 miles, on a cold but a good day’s ride.

Due to the virus, there was no Pubs or cafes open so the advice was to bring a flask and nibbles but as we headed towards Drakes Trail, Trevor suggested going to Morrisons in Tavistock which I thought was a good idea with beans on toast in my mind!

It was early July.

Many of us had been out cycling alone, with one companion and or taking part in the excellent Ispysolation competition.

Although it has been correctly said that we are a Cycling Club and not a drinking one, pubs do offer great opportunities to meet up and chat in a convivial atmosphere after an enjoyable and usually challenging ride.

Finally there was the go ahead to ride in groups albeit a maximum of six. Would the excellent weather hold? How would pubs deal with an influx of cyclists? What would the locals think?

To start with the plan was to choose pubs with large beer gardens to maximise social distancing. Booking ahead gave the pubs notice.

The Teign House Inn didn’t disappoint.

Well organised with table service and good weather made this a great place to recommence the rides programme and arrive at after a challenging ride up and around the Teign Valley. It was also a good opportunity to reconnect with fellow club members whom we hadn’t seen for a while save for a fleeting glimpse in passing each other on individual rides.

A ride to the Coombe Cellars followed but there was disappointment as we spun down to the pub ready to sit close to the S e p t / O c t

water and watch a setting sun over the Teign only to be told that we had to sit inside as there was no outside service.

After that the trip to the Union Inn at Denbury showed how a village green could be put to good use with well spaced tables to enable social distancing.

The Tinpickle and Rhum at Haytor provided our first evening of drizzle and sadly obscured our view across Dartmoor.

From then on the evenings became chillier although dry and slowly but surely we moved inside the pubs as the weeks progressed. Here by nature of the differing characteristics and facilities that pubs offered, there were often challenges in suitable social distancing. Face coverings became the norm when out of our seats and checking in with the NHS app became second nature.

“So far so good we thought” as October approached. Then discussions with the friendly new landlords of the recently reopened Rising Sun confirmed what we had thought. Closing time was moving to 10pm. How would we cope? Simple; we moved forward the start time of all following rides by 30 minutes and there was no problem!

Despite the worsening weather the numbers on all rides were good even requiring pubs to be creative with the groupings on occasions. We saw quite a few stressed faces on those working in pubs. After all their livelihoods were at stake. It is important to recognise how |

hard most tried to make us welcome even if their understanding of the rules seemed no better than ours!

We may have been away during Lockdown 1 but what has remained are the quiet lanes, and the gorgeous views across the moor and coast. The owls, bats and other nocturnal wildlife have continued to function as normal. No doubt they will still be around to welcome us as we come out of Lockdown 2!

ROUTE: CARLISLE TO HOLM MOOR NATIONAL PARK: PEAK DISTRICT DISTANCE: 113.2km ASSENT: 2247m

Day 6

of the 10 National Parks Ride and we reach The Peak District.

After a sweeping run down the valley we zig zagged across the Pennines from Broughton to our coffee stop at Colne, then the fabulous mountain road to Hebdon Bridge. Some pretty monumental ascents for loaded bikes, but rewarding and such a pleasure to see the purple array of flowering heather.

of cyclists on a parallel dead end road, we checked it out, and yes there was an underpass requiring steep and rough navigation.

Afternoon tea in Marsden to fortify us for the lumpy road to Holmfirth. Supper and a couple of beers at the pub, then up the 300m to a tucked away camping spot on Holm Moor.

Probably the toughest day yet.

Lunch in the park, then tow path departure, but then the ups and downs began. Route 68 is tough, mercilessly so. Not long hills, but never level, and plenty steeply so.

The crossing of the M62 was closed, with non to helpful cycling signage ‘please find another route’. It was a huge detour, off the moor and back up again to the next crossing, then Richard spotted a couple S e p t / O c t

Camp spot on Holm Moor good, low cloud not so. Packed and departed damp, but not cold.

Undulations along the western rim of the Peak District were noticeable, but not as wearing as yesterday.

Mega breakfast stop in Castleton, then inevitable climbing returned until Munsell Head. Stopped for the ubiquitous view, then down following errant route track, escape plan involved 2 stone Stiles, narrow bridge and steep climb forl our laden and bulky bikes. Thence we found the tunnel, opened since my last visit, and providing a far more desirous route The trail was fab, lit + paved tunnels, bridges and limestone gorges. Sad to hear that it is due to be compulsorily purchased for freight / limestone quarrying.

We disharged onto A6 (not nice) as my intended route was a vertiginous bridleway. Soon back into a testing climb to Cowdale.

Main road transitions on the hills around Buxton, I’d forgotten quite how busy they are with lorries and trucks, then down toward Congleton. Camp site 1 - closed, 2 - full, 3 - no tents due to Covid. Helped by a local in the hostelry for evening food we were directed to a peaceful recreation ground for the night.

So we are out of The Peak District and The Pennines, pretty much half way on distance and time with 5 out of 10 Parks visited!

ROUTE: MACCLESFIELD TO CLOCAENOG FOREST NATIONAL PARK: TRANSITON DAY DISTANCE: 139.5km ASSENT: 1518m

An early

getaway, even by our standards, arriving in Macclesfield at 5.50am. This meant our road put to Jodrel Bank was quiet.

After so many hilly days it was a revelation to feel the ease of propulsion on the gently rolling / mostly flat roads of Cheshire.

An early lunch stop at just under 60 miles at Hope Church, chance to dry damp kit, even christened the bowl to wash the spare shorts. Hope Churchyards grass cutters were on duty in the guise of 5 sheep, they were not very effective though, we understand this being due to lockdown restrictions!

Thenceforth the hills started, first past Mole, then up into the busier and more dramatic Clynwidian range. Chatted with S e p t / O c t

hill climbing specialist and her husband at the top, then off into the bery pleasant Ruthin for tea and shopping.

All slowed down now, 80 miles in and awaiting pitching hour, so leisurely was the pace as we headad to the Red Lion at Cyffylliog for an excellent curry, then to the Clocaenog Forest for the nights wild camp amongst the drone of the alien-like turbines.

Today was basically an earned rest day arising from extra distance covered yesterday, but first we had a morning amble to the west coast of Wales.

The night had seemed wet, but roads dry, apparently therefore more dripping from trees above than precipitation. Falling leaves on to the tent was however a bit eerie overnight.

Good route through the forest and over the B-road hump of Mynydd Poeth and the 12 mile A5 blast into Betws-y-coed.

We stopped at only open coffee vendor at our early hour. The lad serving had no idea when breakfast buttie would be available so we made do with other, only to find 10-minutes later that sausage and bacon butties were out!

Over the pass the passing through Capel Curig as cloud base rose and offered views. Met some camping cyclists from Sheffield on one of our view stops on the descent, then down to Beddgelert for coffee.

Rain came on as we hit the low lands, completely missing our turn so re-tracing to friend Paul’s isolated home. Great to meet up again and take car ride to visit Portmerion, and later to the pub.

Good day, and relatively restful with our 45 miles consigned to the morning.

Comeuppance day. We’d enjoyed 9 dry days with barely any traffic, welcome day 10.

We bade farewell to Paul and headed out to the coast at Penhyndeuraeth, then on to Harlech. Things were looking good, traffic ok, bright and dry.

As we headed south so the sky turned increasingly dark, and then a thick rain hit, and for half an hour we were pressure washed. I discovered the new bar bag and it’s waterproof outer is largely porous, the puddle that formed saturated the maps amongst other less important things.

We failed to dry out in the Barmouth Coffee Shop but rain did completely stop allowing us a few well aired miles

On approach to Machynlleth we were caught by the edge of a shower so nipped into a bus shelter. Fortuitous as an intense period of rain began. We sat it out. Machynlleth for lunch, but thereafter the rain never really stopped, and the A487 that formed much of our route was unpleasantly busy.

Afternoon tea in Aberystwyth came with chips.

We made Aberaeron at 83 miles before 6pm, but failed to find any vacancies, so have resorted to tents once more, now with the tune of heavy rain on the canvas.

TED’s Topics No. 45

Topic: The Plea for Safer Cycling.

I was minded

to write this short piece because a very good friend of mine has been involved in a very serious road accident, and somewhat unusually, no other vehicle was involved. And this sort of thing seems to be happening uncomfortably often. If I can prevent someone else from suffering similarly, by writing this piece, then I’ll be well pleased. I have to say at this point, I don’t know what happened, but what I do know is that a downhill descent, and high speed, were involved. I’m always bothered when cyclists part company from their bikes at any time, and particularly at high speeds because the outcomes are often then not very good, as in this unfortunate case. There can be unpredictable things like deer running amok (yes that happens) or a mechanical breakage, but also there are some basic principles that must be S e p t / O c t

adhered to if you want to keep yourself safe. And I thought it might be good, to discuss a couple of them here.

So the first thing to reiterate is: “Never lose your respect for something that could kill you, and that includes your bike”.

What I mean by this, is don’t be taken in by the bicycle’s innocuous looks. And never either take it for granted, or become blasé and over-familiar with it. Don’t ride it if you are pre-occupied, or unwell. Never be pressured by others to ride faster than a speed you’re comfortable with. But do service your bike properly, learn to ride it properly (and by this, a measure could be: do you know how to counter-steer and weight it properly – if you don’t know what I’m talking about a) you can’t ride |

“Never lose your respect for something that could kill you, and that includes your bike”. it properly, and b) you need to read an earlier article in this series), and know your limits.

I’ve learned a lot from motorcycle training, and I am genuinely concerned by the lack of truly skilled riding of bicycles, even among those who ride regularly. Practice is not enough. It’s too easy to practice in the wrong habits, and not to move your skills forward in any way. If you ride badly and regularly, practice won’t make you a good skilled rider. Conversely, if you ride well, have taken appropriate instruction, are consistently self-critical of your own skillset, then practice is likely to improve your riding, your speed, and your safety levels. On our very busy roads now only the very highest skills will keep you safe.

And the second thing to say is: “Know your abilities, and always ride within them” It’s much better to practice emergency stopping, counter-steering, controlled sliding, delicate control and so forth, in controlled conditions, knowing that you can do them for real when the worst happens. And, take it from me, the worst will happen. All cyclists with even a basic skillset should have a clear understanding of how quickly they can stop their bikes in a variety of conditions. do this stuff, have adopted an ethos of continual improvement, and truly want to keep yourself safe, you know what you need to do then, don’t you ?

So here I make a plea, for my friend’s sake: ride with skill, commit to continual improvement, get instruction and raise your game. No more bicycle accidents please………

For the final Classic Corner of 2020 I thought I would feature my 1959 Frejus “Tour De France” – another deep green machine!

A classic Italian builder, this Frejus won the best preserved bicycle at one of the Eroica Britannica events, it has had the paint worked on by some sort of expert as the decals seem original as they show signs of flaking and fading in places but the finish is very smooth and glossy.

The components are all immaculate, featuring Campagolo gears, Campagnolo S e p t / O c t

Classic Corner

BIKE: 1959 Frejus WORDS & PICS: Graham Brodie hubs with NISI sprint rims, pantographed steel chainset and pedals ( probably Magistroni), and Ballila brakes. One the features is unused old stock brake lever hoods, - things of beauty that almost prohibit the thing being ridden, but I do gently!

The alloy pump and mudguards also feature the Frejus name.

It’s very much a fine weather bike and will stay inside in the warm this winter!

Some older members will have fond memories of Dave Bedwell who worked at Colin Lewis’s shop in Paignton, and rode with the group in his later years. Bedwell’s early days as a semi-professional was riding for “FREJUS CYCLES”, and continental company selling bicycles in the UK. Dave was best known for riding for the Hercules team when they won the Tour of Britain in 1954.
