I

D

am writing this article in mid-January, and we are in the middle of a deep freeze. The temperatures have not gone above freezing for days. As always, I want to thank our maintenance department for the great job they do clearing our roads of snow and ice. Because of their efforts emergency vehicles and members can travel on our roads. Just keep in mind it is Winter and always drive with caution as road conditions can change quickly.

The 2021 dues statements and packets have been mailed out and need to be paid by March 1st. All dues paid after March 31st will incur a penalty.

Included in the packet are changes to our Bylaws that require a vote by the membership. These changes were recommended by the Governing Documents Committee and approved by the Board of Directors to be sent to the membership for a vote. All changes to the Bylaws must be approved by a majority of the members voting. The recommended Bylaw changes may seem minor and of not much consequence.

But when it comes to a Bylaw every sentence and word is important. So please follow the voting instructions and vote.

Also, thank you to our Ski Hill team. After warm temperatures and much rain, they were able to open the Ski Hill for a very successful MLK weekend. As with anything concerning the Ski Hill, Mother Nature is in control.

This is especially true for our Recreation Department and their plans for a Winter Carnival on Presidents Day weekend.

Watch for the email blasts and check this issue of The Hideabout for more details. As I said before, Mother Nature is in control, and we just hope she will cooperate by giving us seasonable weather for our Winter Carnival.

ooking Court time at the Recreation Sports Complex As we move into the winter months the indoor multisport courts in the RSC become more popular. Our indoor courts are such a great amenity and allows you to enjoy several activities year round. The most popular being pickelball, tennis, and indoor basketball.

We offer a few different programs that allow you to utilize this amenity for free during different time periods. We offer after school open gym on Monday, and Wednesday from 3:15 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. During this time period you can utilize an indoor court for free. We have a walking for wellness program that allows you to walk on the indoor courts at your own pace.

This program takes place Monday- Friday from 8 A.M. – 9 A.M., and Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4 P.M. - 5 P.M..

Pickleball has been a sport that has been taking off across The Hideout, and across the country. Its popularity has really grown and we have some great opportunities at the RSC for any skill level pickleball player. We have open Pickleball on Tuesday and Friday from 1 P.M. – 4 P.M. The cost is $5.00 a person and allows you to utilize the courts for 3 hours. We also offer a free open play pickleball on Monday for members only from 1 P.M.-3 P.M. There are many other options to get court time as well. Whether you have a small group or a big group, no matter what sport or activity we can accommodate. Below is an amenity fee chart for booking court time. You can reserve court time up to 24 hours in advance and you can reserve a time the day of as long as it’s available. Again please don’t hesitate to call with any questions as we will try to accommodate your requests for court time.

Winter has arrived bringing with it some cold, some warmer than normal, and some rainy weather. Unfortunately, rainy weather has hampered our Ski Hill operations. However, our staff was able to endure even with the rainy weather. We have enjoyed a great Martin Luther King weekend with excellent skiing conditions.

We want to acknowledge the staff at the Ski Hill complex for their remarkable achievements and commitment. During the off season our staff was able to add a new trail to the hill. This is the longest trail The Hideout has had at the Ski Hill. The success of the Ski Hill and Ski Hill Grill is attributable to the devotion and hard work of those employees. Our success in any endeavor is a team approach so we would be remiss if we did not mention the assistance from Maintenance, Public Safety, Recreation, Food and Beverage and Administration.

Our dues assessments were mailed out to all our members in early January.

We want to thank those members who pay their dues in a timely manner. The dues are our most important form of revenue and are the main reason The Hideout has an outstanding reputation with our members and other home owner associations. We are constantly working to improve our amenities and services.

We ask members to kindly remit their dues payments as soon as they can.

Part of these improvements is updating our By-laws and our Rules and Regulations. In your dues packet, you will have observed a number of By-law recommended changes. Some of these changes are necessary because The Hideout's current business practices need to keep up with current trends. We

ask you to review these changes, and should you have any questions, please contact our offices for any clarification.

The Hideout has been faced with increasing speeding within our community. We have addressed these concerns before. We also advised we would be taking a more active approach in controlling and correcting this issue.

We have purchased a radar unit which captures the speed of vehicles. Citations have been issued and will continue to be issued to those who violate our posted speed limits. We are aware there are those who have complained; however we remind everyone if you are speeding, you have to accept that responsibility.

We allow what we consider to be an adequate speed between posted speeds and the citation speed.

Committees play a vital role in the operation of The Hideout. We urge members to volunteer to become a member of a committee. Please contact the administration office for more information.

During these times when weather can be unpredictable, we ask members to be vigilant and cognizant of their neighbors who may need assistance. We ask you to be alert when using our facilities and especially our roadways. We make every effort to keep them safe; however, nature can be a challenge in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Our wish is for all is to have a safe, healthy and prosperous 2024. ■

ello valued members. Valentine’s Day is on Wednesday Feb 14th, this is also Ash Wednesday - the beginning of Lent.

With the Clubhouse historically being closed Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be offering our version of Fat Tuesday on the Saturday prior (February 10th) with Cajun style features and Bourbon Street style cocktails all weekend. The Fridays after Ash Wednesday the clubhouse will be offering a variety of seafood features. Saturday, February 17th, we will be featuring Prime Rib for an after Valentine’s Day special.

We have added vending machines at the front of the POA and Public Safety by the lodge. 20oz bottles are priced for our members at a deep discounted price compared to the local area stores. Herr’s

snacks are now available at the Ski Hill Grill and the Clubhouse Pub for a quick munchie fix.

Finally, with the needed snow the Ski Hill is open.

With upgraded food and snack offerings at the Ski Hill Grill, Arlene and her crew continue to fill the needs of hungry breakfast goers and skiers.

Remember that Brett at the Main Lodge continues to offer Tuesday dinners and we will have 2 Lunches on the Lake in the month of February.

ts snow and ice season in the Hideout!!

The Facilities Department has been working extremely hard to keep our roads clear of snow and ice. The last few storms have not been too bad but we anticipate more snow over the next couple of months. We would like to remind our members to stay off the roads during the winter events to allow the Maintenance crew time to properly clear the roads and lots. During these storms we experience drivers getting stuck and or sliding which causes safety concerns and members walking in the dark when visible is low. Please if you are out and about use caution, wear reflective clothing and be mindful of our safety and yours. All of our equipment is fully operational to handle just about any snow and ice storm and our crew is always prepared prior to each event.

The Maple wood Swale project is scheduled to start February 5th and should take a week or two to complete.

The scope of work for this project is to reinforce the banks of the swale, relocate the mouth of the swale over onto hideout property, remove old pipes and clean up the area from debris and gravel.

properties to be signed so we can get the final plans stamped and approved by PennDOT. Once we have the stamped plans, we can move forward with sending this project out to Bid.

We are currently waiting for stamped plans to extend our Tiki Bar deck. Once we have these plans, we will look into completing this work in house or sending it out to bid. This expansion is to extend the existing deck out another 10-12ft.

The Trash and recycling center will be getting a cover this year so when members and staff are disposing of household trash, they will be out of the weather we are waiting on plans so we

can bid this project out.

The Clubhouse deck is scheduled to be replaced this year as we are just waiting on the stamped plans so we can bid this out.

The entire deck will be replaced and new footers installed so we can also plan on expanding the clubhouse in the future with a four-season room.

Stormwater remediation will start back up in the spring. We currently have a long list of minor projects to complete from 2023 and some larger projects that will all get completed in 2024. Stormwater issues have decreased over the years with very few calls coming in. This is a great indicator that the work we have been performing is working and the issues of stormwater effecting members lots has decreased. Stormwater and groundwater are two different issues, members that have a groundwater issue will need to address this on their property as the Hideout is not responsible for these issues on members lots. The Hideout will continue to correct stormwater issues to help reduce the impact on members lots but groundwater can infiltrate members lots from underground due to the rocky terrain the hideout is located. Water may just creep onto a lot then disappear due to the ground. Members with broken water or sewer pipes can contact RS&W with those concerns at (570) 698-6162.

024 looks to be another great year at the Hideout golf course. The cart paths on holes 7 and 8 are currently in the process of being replaced and should be completed in the spring weather permitting.

Plans are going forward to install a driving range near the camp grounds. No time table has been established as of yet.

We are still putting together the tournament calendar for 2024 and I hope to have that to share with you in the March Hideabout.

Tentative League start dates, based on last year’s schedule, are as follows. The Thursday Night Men’s League will kick

revalidation times.

To participate in this program, please be sure to include your MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION FORM, CURRENT VEHICLE REGISTRATION(S), COLLEGE STUDENT ID’s and any other materials you wish to add on at this time, in order to have all of your items included within your certified mailing envelope.

Payments can also be made online through the membership portal. If you do not already have an account, you will need to validate your membership credentials in order to access the portal.

Your member number will be your Lot Number with zeros preceding to equal a total of seven digits. Please note there will be a fee incurred when making a payment utilizing a credit or debit card.

As it has been previously announced, the credit card convenience fee has increased from $30.00 to $45.00 and will need to manually be added at the time of your online transaction.

’d like to take this time to review some important information to help everyone better assist you in an emergency situation. During an emergency it is normal for some of us to react differently but try to be calm, take a breath and these few tips will help you & your family.

~What’s the number you are calling from or verifying the number on their ID system. ~What’s your name? Who is in trouble, sick, or injured?

When you are in The Hideout and experience a Police, Fire, Or Medical Emergency CALL 911

~Are you at the location now?

Upon making contact with the 911 dispatcher please be calm and remember to speak clearly as you relay information they will be requesting. They will want your “EMERGENCY” number. This number is printed on your “GREEN” reflective sign located on your lot post at the front of your driveway. They might then ask for your “Street” name and confirm that your located in the HIDEOUT. Your lot number if requested is the other numerical posting on your lot post. Again, the first most important number is the “EMERGENCY” number which is on the reflective green placard on the front yard post.

~Depending on the incident/issue be prepared to give a description of a vehicle or suspects.

Some other critical questions that might be asked are: ~Tell me exactly what happened.

~If domestic related or an altercation are weapons involved?

2024 PROPOSED BYLAW AMENDMENT FOR MEMBER VOTE Association of Property Owners of The Hideout, Inc.’s Bylaw Amendments for Membership Vote Included in your annual membership dues mailing is the 2024 Bylaw Amendment Ballot packet. Please follow the instructions therein to cast your vote either “FOR” or “AGAINST” the “RECOMMENDED CHANGE(S)” indicated for Article II and Article III. If you did not receive this mailing, please contact the POA. CURRENT BYLAW ARTICLE II Definitions The following terms as used in these Bylaws are defined as follows: a) “Association” means Association of Property Owners of The Hideout, Inc., DBA (doing business as) “HIDEOUT POA INC”, a Pennsylvania not-forprofit corporation. b) “Board of Directors” or “Board” is the group of persons vested with the management of the business and affairs of the Association as is more fully set forth in these Bylaws, as amended December 29, 1979. c) “Bylaws” means the written code or codes of rules for the regulation or management of the business and affairs of the Association as adopted from time to time, as amended December 29, 1979. d) “Common Areas” means all property included, from time to time, within the definition of “Common Areas” set forth in the Declaration. e) “Declaration” means the Declaration of Protective Covenants of the Developer dated as of May 11, 1970, as the same may be supplemented or amended from time to time. f) “Developer” means Boise Cascade Recreation Communities and its successors and assigns. g) “Development” means all of the real property known as The Hideout, a subdivision, situated in the Townships of Lake and Salem, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, as the same is referred to in the Declaration of Protective Covenants, which is duly recorded in the Recorder of Deeds Office in and for Wayne County, Pennsylvania. h) “Elected Official” means an officer of a body elected by the Membership of the Association, including but not limited to the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee, in whom is vested the authority by the Protective Covenants, Bylaws and/or other governing documents, or to whom the authority has been delegated, to appoint, or to recommend individuals for appointment, election, or advancement. (Amended April 1, 2023) i) “Guest” means all spouses, dependent children and legal

dependents of Class B & C Associate Members; invitees of: (a) Members, (b) Class A Associate Members and (c) Tenants. The use of any particular genders herein shall be deemed to include all genders. (Amended October 6, 1991) j) “Lot” means any lot in the Development included from time to time within the definition of “Residential Lot” set forth in the Declaration. k) “Member” means those persons having membership rights in the Association in accordance with the provisions of these Bylaws. l) “Member in Good Standing” means a Member who has not defaulted on any financial obligations to the Association for all lots owned and has not breached any other obligations under the community legal documents.

(Amended March 31, 2004) m) “Owner” means: i. Any natural person, firm, corporation, trust or other entity who holds fee title to a lot or an undivided interest in fee title to a lot. ii. Any person who has contracted to purchase fee title to a lot or an undivided interest in fee title to a lot under written agreement, in which case the seller under said agreement shall cease to be the “Owner” while said agreement is in effect; or iii. Any lessee of a lot under a recorded lease from the owner of fee title to said lot for a term of not less than fifty (50) years, in which case the lessor under said lease shall cease to be the “Owner” while said lease is in effect. n) “Policy” refers to the written regulations or course of conduct adopted and followed by the Board of Directors in the governing and operation of The Hideout. o) “Relative” means, with respect to an Elected Official, an individual who is related as father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, first cousin, nephew, niece, husband, wife, father-in-law, mother-in-law, sonin-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, stepfather, stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, and half-sister.

CURRENT BYLAW ARTICLE III Purposes Section 1 This Corporation shall have the purposes or powers as may be stated in its Articles of Incorporation, and such powers as are now, or may be granted hereafter by the Non-Profit Corporation Law of 1972 of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or

any successor legislation. The primary purposes of this Corporation are: a) To assist in the establishment and promotion of a planned unit residential development designed for healthful and harmonious living. b) To promote, assist, and encourage the collective interest of all Members in the Development. c) To promote and assist in the establishment, care and maintenance of improvements to the common property and any facilities of any kind dedicated to the use and enjoyment of the Development which now exists or which may hereafter be installed or constructed. d) To regulate the use, maintenance, repair, restoration, replacement and modification of common property in the Development. e) To assist and cooperate with the members of all lots, improved and unimproved, for the purpose of promoting and maintaining the natural beauty of the physical environment in the Development so that the value of property will not be impaired or adversely affected by nuisances or other property conditions detrimental to the health and welfare of the Members, and to take such action as may be desirable and necessary to prevent or abate such conditions as may be consistent with the Bylaws, the Declaration of Protective Covenants, and the applicable law. f) To aid and cooperate with members of the Association in the Development, in the enforcement of such conditions, covenants, and restrictions on and appurtenant to their property as are now in existence, as well as any other conditions, and restrictions as shall hereafter may be approved and adopted.

g) To exercise any and all rights, privileges and authority that may be delegated to it from time to time by the Members of the Association. h) In general to do everything necessary and proper for the accomplishment of the purposes hereinabove set forth.

RECOMMENDED CHANGES TO ARTICLE III, Purposes, Section 1: The Hideout is referred as “Association” throughout the Bylaws. For consistency, it is recommended to change the term “Corporation” to “Association” in the first paragraph for consistency. Our existing bylaw definition of “Association” means Association of Property Owners of The Hideout, Inc., DBA (doing business as) “HIDEOUT POA INC”, a Pennsylvania not-for-profit corporation.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the homegoing of our cherished husband, father, and pop-pop, John G. Bobcik, on December 20, 2023, age 81.

Born November 21, 1942, to the late John and Victoria (Lilli) Bobcik, in Palisades Park, NJ, he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Caterina Iacono Bobcik; his children, Jennifer (Paul) of Dingmans Ferry, PA; son, John, of Morristown, NJ; and his grandchildren, Natalie and Christopher as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, George Bobcik.

Trained in the automotive field in his early years, he was a self employed mechanic from 1968-1978 in Lodi, NJ. With various jobs in between and often working 2-3 jobs at a time, the ever-so-hardworking John moved into the newspaper business and retired from the Star Ledger around 2006. He and his bride, Caterina, began their family in Palisades Park, NJ, and then wanting to raise their children in the country, moved to Sparta, NJ. When not working he loved and enjoyed his family, coached both softball and baseball, and always had the door on Hunters Lane open for company, offering a cup of coffee and a slice of Entenmann’s cake. On his retirement years, he and Catherine moved to the Hideout in Lake Ariel, PA. He loved community life and served in various activities: the garden club, teaching wood-burning classes, and their Thursday night friend’s group, continuing to open their home for coffee and cake. At their church, the Light of Christ in Mount Cobb, John enjoyed serving as an elder, a youth bible study teacher, and as a financial Christian counselor. Ever so determined to make a difference, John loved being productive and serving the Lord and his people!

Hideout Domestic Pet Policies 1. Pets must be licensed, inoculated, leashed and kept under owner’s control at all times.

2. Dogs may be off leash when at the Dog Park Amenity.

3. To use the Dog Park Amenity, dogs must be registered annually.

4. It is the responsibility of the owner of the pet to clean up and remove animal excrement of their pet.

5. Dogs are only allowed at the Dog Park and Walking Trail, if they are registered with the POA, the owners pick up after their pets, and they are leashed at all times with the exception of the Dog Park. (Exception: Guide Dogs) 6. It shall be a violation of Hideout Rules for any property owner, including their family, guests or renters to shelter or maintain more than five (5) pets (Dog and Cats combined total) on any Hideout property/dwelling lot unit. All puppies and kittens over the set limit of five (5) shall be properly removed by the tenth week of birth. a. All pets must be registered (Non-Fee) through the Hideout POA on a annual basis (see annual POA Registration Form). This registration does not pertain to the Dog Park amenity. As we power through the cold, harsh month of February, here are some things to keep up with in the Hideout as we approach warmer days.

ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATES • USDA deer population surveys took place in Mid-January. o Any questions regarding deer management, and population numbers can be answered by contacting the Environmental Manager (Paul Matarazzo) via email or phone. o pmatarazzo@thehideout.us o 570-698-4100 x108 • Necessity of deer removal for the 2024 calendar year has not yet been determined. o Removal is not expected o Removal is population survey results based o By the time the Hideabout Newspaper is released, survey results may have determined a cull necessary / unnecessary • Roamingwood Lake will remain at a height of 5-6ft once work has commenced on Maplewood Swale, current lake height is 7ft below pool due to the work being performed.

• Roamingwood Lake will be re-filled to pool height beginning on March 15th, 2024 (pending lake thaw if necessary).

• The Windemere Dam Restoration Project has been completed o Structural repairs were made. o Trees Impeding the dam were removed. o Stone was added for reinforcement along the dam face. o The dam outlet was fortified, and reconstructed to avoid interference from beavers.

In simpler terms, the feeding of deer can lead directly to them being removed by the USDA if counts are skewed towards higher population densities being observed on survey nights, than there actually are if the deer were not being fed.

In conclusion, we ask that you do not feed the deer, not only is it prohibited within the Hideout, but you are indirectly leading these deer to their demise, whether that be via natural causes, or by the deer management program. Reducing the feeding of deer, can reduce the rate at which deer removal is necessary drastically.

Chimney damage is often obvious, but sometimes it can be hidden. ACTIVITIES TO STRENGTHEN THE HEART The heart is a vital component of the human body. Intermountain Health says an individual who dos not exercise is more than twice as likely to get heart disease. UCI Health says heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death.

Exercise is an ideal way to strengthen the heart and reduce your risk for heart disease and other conditions.

Certain activities are prime for boosting heart health. ¥ Aerobic exercise: Aerobic exercise raises heart rate and gets the blood pumping throughout the body. Aerobic activity improves circulation, and over time it ensures the heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood, thus potentially lowering blood pressure. Aim for 30 minutes each day, for at least five days a week. ¥ Resistance/weight training: Building muscle can help the body burn fat and boost metabolism. This type of training can use weights or the body’s own resistance. Recommended two to three days a week.

¥ Balance and flexibility exercises: While there isn’t a direct correlation to how the heart works, these types of activities will help reduce the risk of falls or injuries to muscles and joints while working out. Inactivity is dangerous for the heart, so ensuring that physical activity can continue is important. Flexibility and balance exercises can be incorporated into daily workouts. Stretching, tai chi, yoga, and pilates can be included two or three times a week. ¥ Healthy eating: The foods people eat can affect heart health. Opt for lean protein sources and foods that include healthy fats. Salmon, avocados and olives are some options. Balance these foods with whole grains that are full of fiber, which can help a person feel fuller longer. Fiber also is essential for preventing atherosclerosis, a condition that causes hardening of the arteries. ¥ Meditation: Slowing down, performing deep-breathing exercises and meditation can reduce stress. That, in turn, can help prevent damage to the heart.

Strengthening the heart and maintaining its health involves various activities that can be incorporated into daily routines.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT U.S. PRESIDENTS Americans celebrate Presidents’ Day each year on the third Monday in February. The holiday is known as Washington’s Birthday within the federal government. While it has honored George Washington since it was first established as a holiday in 1879, the day now honors all who served as United States presidents. ¥ Anecdotes abound in regard to George Washington, and his famed wooden teeth is among them. However, that story is an enduring myth and not reflective of reality. Various historians and groups, including the National Constitution Center, note that George Washington’s dentures were not made of wood, but rather a combination of ivory, gold and human and animal teeth, among other materials. ¥ Two former presidents and founding fathers passed away within hours of each other. John Adams, who succeeded Washington as the nation’s second president in 1797, and Thomas Jefferson, who served as the third president of the United States between 1801 and 1809, each died on July 4, 1826. The two one-time friends and then foes ultimately reconciled prior to their deaths. ¥ John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams, who served as the sixth president of the United States from 1825 to 1829, are the only presidents among the first twelve to have never owned slaves. ¥ Though outdoor inaugurations are now the standard, the nation’s fifth president, James Monroe, was the first to be inaugurated in the elements. ¥ Many U.S. presidents came from humble beginnings. Millard Filmore, who served as the thirteenth president between 1850 and 1853, was born into poverty in upstate New York. Filmore became president upon the sudden death of President Zachary Taylor, who died suddenly on July 9. Perhaps his humble origins and unexpected ascendancy to the presidency is why Filmore memorably refused an honorary degree from Oxford University. ¥ One of the more notably named U.S. presidents was not actually given his memorable moniker at birth. According to the National Constitution Center, President Ulysses S. Grant, who was the eighteenth individual to take the office of the president, was actually named Hiram Ulysses Grant. He only became Ulysses S. Grant, a name that clearly stuck, after Congressman Thomas Hamer mistakenly listed his name as “Ulysses S. Grant’”upon nominating the young man to attend West Point. ¥ President John F. Kennedy, who served as the thirty-fifth U.S. president until his assassination in November 1963, was the first American president born in the twentieth century. It will likely be awhile before the first U.S. president born in the twenty-first century takes office, as the nationÕs current president, Joe Biden, was born just 25 years after JFK.

Join THE HIDEOUT TEAM! The Hideout POA, a Gold Star, four-season recreational, private, gated community in NEPA is seeking candidates for the following: Public Safety Department (3 p.m. - 11 p.m.)

Respond to all incidents (i.e. complaints, fire, ambulance, crimes-in-progress, etc.).

Issue citations when warranted (i.e. Traffic and Non-Traffic).

Maintain radio communications with North Gate Control Center and other patrol vehicles.

Notify the Shift Supervisor of any unusual occurrence that may involve, but not limited to, POA licensed premises, serious assaults, damage to amenities, any action that involved a response on the part of local, federal, and/or state law enforcement personnel.

Be in contact with law enforcement agencies to exchange information and procedures relating to criminal matters within the confines of The Hideout.

Ensure that all POA buildings and installations have been checked, (alarmed and locked when necessary) during his/her tour of duty.

Responsible to identify and log in all calls for service, visits, and any action taken on his/her respective shift.

Respond as directed by Control and take appropriate action as required.

Escort responding Emergency Service Personnel as requested.

- Keep your gas tank half-full at all times. In extreme cold, a tank with little gas in it can freeze up. And if you’re stuck in traffic in a storm, you don’t want to risk running out of gas.

One of the most important winter driving preparation steps is to make sure your vehicle is up to the challenge of extreme temperatures and slippery roads. As part of your regular maintenance schedule, consider the following.

- Stock a winter emergency kit in your vehicle. Key items to have on hand: cell phone and charger, flashlight with extra batteries, snow scraper and brush, small shovel, spare tire and jack, jumper cables, flares, extra clothing or blanket, sand or kitty litter (helpful for giving you traction when stuck in the snow), extra washer fluid, drinking water, non-perishable food, and any necessary medications.

W INTER?

- Make sure your battery has enough life left. Cold temperatures are harsh on batteries, so an older one may need to be replaced before winter sets in.

- Check your vehicle tread. It takes sufficient tread to give you the traction you need to maneuver safely on sleet- or snowcovered roads. To gauge tire tread, insert a penny head-first into the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, you don’t have enough tire tread.

- Top off all fluids, including windshield washer fluid. When roads are salted and sanded after a storm, you’ll go through a lot of washer fluid keeping your windshield clear.

- Replace wiper blades that are torn, frayed or cracked. You’ll need blades that are in good condition to keep your windshield free of winter precipitation.

- Have key components checked, including brakes, belts, hoses, ignition system, fuel system, heater and defroster.

Avoiding a breakdown in cold winter temperatures is certainly ideal!

- If foul weather is anticipated, make sure someone knows your itinerary and intended route.

WHILE ON THE ROAD - Keep tabs on changing weather conditions. It’s not enough to check the forecast before you head out for the day or evening; weather can change rapidly in the winter, so stay current. Check weather apps or web sites on your phone during stops (not while driving).

- Stay focused at all times. Distraction behind the wheel is always dangerous, but even more so in foul weather. Keep your cell phone out of sight and out of reach (ideally in a work bag in the trunk, cargo area or rear seat floor). Take time to eat meals while safely parked, and take time for personal grooming before you get behind the wheel.

- Avoid using cruise control in foul

weather. If you encounter slippery conditions, you want the ability to ease up on the gas but avoid hitting the brake to keep from skidding.

- Don’t rely on electronic stability control (ESC) solely. ESC is designed to improve control in situations such as when you must swerve or brake abruptly. The system automatically brakes one or more wheels briefly and/or reduces engine power in response. Transport Canada advises that drivers not have a false sense of safety in vehicles with ESC, since driving too fast for road or weather conditions will still result in a loss of vehicle control.

- Make sure your exhaust pipe is entirely clear of snow and ice. Never run your engine with the vehicle stopped unless you are certain the exhaust is not being trapped inside, to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

- Be cautious on bridges and overpasses. Just like the signs say, these surfaces really do freeze before the road. As you approach a bridge or overpass, slow down preemptively so you can avoid hitting your brake on a surface that may be slippery.

This also gives you greater following distance, which helps in the event you begin to slide.

- Give snow plows room to work.

Stay further back behind a snow plow and don’t drive directly next to it if you can avoid doing so. They need more room to maneuver than a passenger vehicle, so give them a wide berth.

IF YOU GET STUCK - Call for help right away, since it may take emergency vehicles or a tow truck a while to reach you in a storm.

- Use a flare (a key emergency kit item) to note your location, both for emergency

- Know when to turn off ESC. The system prevents your wheels from spinning, but if you’re stuck in the snow then spinning your wheels actually can help you. Car and Driver advises that as long as the snow isn’t too deep, turn off your ESC just until your vehicle is no longer stuck in snow. Then turn it back on once you’re moving freely. If the snow is very deep, turning off ESC is not likely to help and could make matters worse.

Exercise Guidelines For Adults A physically active lifestyle has been linked to a host of health benefits, including a reduced risk for various chronic diseases and a longer, healthier life. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that moving more and sitting less benefits people regardless of their age, sex, race, ethnicity, or even current fitness levels.

Whether they're adapting to a more physically active lifestyle, already physically active or somewhere in between, individuals can benefit from recognizing the latest physical activity guidelines from the DHHS.

Adults The DHHS notes that substantial health benefits can be gained when adults do between 150 and 300 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity each week or between 75 and 150 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week. The DHHS notes that aerobic activity, which can include walking, running, cycling, and hiking, among other activities, should be spread out over the course of the week. In addition to aerobic activity,

Older adults The DHHS recommends older adults adhere to the same guidelines as younger adults but take some additional steps as well. Older adults are urged to incorporate multicomponent physical activity that includes balance training into their fitness regimens. The DHHS also advises older

adults to determine their level of effort for physical activity relative to their fitness level. It's also recommended that older adults with chronic conditions discuss their ability to engage safely in regular physical activity with their physicians. Vigorousand even moderate-intensity exercise may not be possible for some older adults with existing conditions.

Routine physical activity can help adults and older adults live longer, healthier lives. Adults of all ages are urged to speak with their physicians about safe ways to become more physically active.
