T

he Huffington Post” has likened Yik Yak to “bathroom stalls without toilets.”

Essentially one big gossip site, this app allows users to share their thoughts with any other users within a certain mile radius. Hendrix users can therefore see what students from the surrounding areas are saying, like University of Central Arkansas and Central Baptist College students. The big draw is the anonymity; there are no user or screen names and no personal profiles. Everyone is anonymous. In theory, Yik Yak could serve as a simple Twitter-inspired site to learn about fun upcoming parties or events within the area from people you wouldn’t necessarily know to follow on Twitter. And for those who want to share thoughts or opinions they wouldn’t normally on Twitter because it could be attributed directly to them, Yik Yak allows an outlet for the thoughts to be shared without the spotlight being shone directly on the users. But like all social media sites, this app has been used and abused for less than innocent means.

The newest social media craze to sweep through college campuses across the United States, Yik Yak has successfully infiltrated Hendrix. It’s difficult to sit through a meal in the caf without one person bringing up “what that one person yakked about so-and-so” or “did you see that one yak that said...,” and so on. Like most trendy things to roll through Hendrix, many expected Yik Yak to follow the same pattern: get popular fast, plateau as the trendiness wore off, and then fizzle out into hipster-fueled hatred for anything mainstream. But surprisingly, Yik Yak has proven more resilient.

One of the bigger flaws to this app is the element of public shaming. While there are more instances of harmless yaks about parties, functions, or various Hendrix elements (squirrels, the cats on campus, sports teams), there are also horribly personal, crass and insensitive yaks about members of our student body all too often.

Being called out anonymously for sexual orientations or promiscuity and using people’s actual full names are certain examples of cyber bullying. Whether or not the statements have any validity to them, sharing them while hiding behind an anonymous mask is spineless and cowardly.

Several students are beginning to doubt the longevity of Yik Yak’s presence on campus.

“It won’t last because people who are big into social media want the acknowledgement and credit,” senior Emma Paul said. “Those who are big presences on social media outlets don’t get the credit for what they say when using Yik Yak because of how anonymous it is.”

Ellen Martin, a sophomore and user of the app, shared a similar mindset to Paul.

“By spring break, Yik Yak won’t be relevant anymore. When Yik Yak first got big, everyone abused it by yakking ‘who’s the hottest girl?’ or ‘who’s the ugliest guy?’ or ‘biggest flirt?’ and after a while it got old fast because people were getting their feelings hurt. So, after a couple of days, the novelty of the app wore off. And the people who used it to yak funny things wouldn’t get the credit for the funny stuff they posted. So why not just use Twitter and get the credit?” Martin said.

It is important to keep in mind that the app itself isn’t a bad idea. As a localized collection of

anonymous thoughts and opinions, Yik Yak is basically anonymous Twitter with GPS. Sports teams can travel to another city and see yaks from their opponents or the rival school’s student body. A Yik Yak user from Conway can travel to Little Rock and see an entirely different set of yaks – something that Twitter can’t provide. Actual unbiased opinions about your college campus can be shared without fear of judgment or reprimand.

But, all too often this app is used to spread rumors and be mean simply because it’s easy to get away with. Since this app was designed for college-aged or older users, several high schools around the country have taken to banning and blocking the app from their servers due to the high amount of underage users. Geofences have been installed around middle school and high school campuses to disable the Yik Yak app within the defined border.

Yik Yak itself isn’t what is hurting people. It’s the users. And while it is highly unlikely this app will ever fade to complete nonexistence, its relevance to this campus and our student body will most likely diminish entirely in the near future.

The unfortunate truth is that gossip and rumors will continue to be spread with or without Yik Yak as an outlet. So, maybe Yik Yak is allowing us the opportunity to take a step back and really think about what exactly it is that we’re saying about one another. It’s an anonymous mirror, reflecting the ugly truth about all of us that no one wants to admit.

Construction begins in Village NEW PUBLIC BUILDING HOUSES RESIDENCES, OFFICES

By Daniel Grear In early October of this year, The Village broke ground on a new structure. The two-story, two-building facility, called the McKennon Building, will be home to business offices on bottom and apartments on top.

Because a tarp-covered, chain-link fence stretches the majority of the project’s perimeter, it’s difficult to get a good look at what’s going on. As of now, the site consists of very little but dirt, gravel, and preliminary pipe work.

Despite its undeveloped appearance, completion is slated for the summer of 2015.

“The supply of nice apartments in Conway with a great location is small to nonexistent,” Ward Davis, The Village’s CEO, said.

Unlike the other mixed-use buildings in The Village, the apartments housed in the new buildings will be marketed to the Conway public, not Hendrix students. Each of the 10 one-bedroom apartments will range between 600-700 square feet, solidifying young professionals without children as the target demographic.

“Small offices are a natural progression for the neighborhood,” Davis said. “They will drive traffic and round out the neighborhood.”

Davis sees office buildings as a critical third component to a community that already boasts both residences and

recreation (i.e. restaurants like Zaza’s and Purple Cow). Between the two buildings, there will be enough office space to welcome five businesses. At this point, one of the 1,300 square foot spaces has already been leased to a real estate agency. Davis anticipates that small professional firms (architecture, law, insurance, etc.) will take up the remaining four spots.

“Though it’s clearly a commercial building, I think it’s going to be the best looking building in the neighborhood,” Davis said.

Despite Davis’s excitement, some Hendrix students are less pleased about the new buildings.

“I’m a little annoyed about the noise,” junior Kimberly Bolin a junior, said.

Bolin, who can see the project from her apartment window at Market Square North, assumed that the McKennon Building would function just like the Row Houses next door: another Village space that’s home to one and two-bedroom apartments. Aside from the construction itself, Bolin was upset to see some of her favorite trees cut down in the interest of the new building. Additionally, she voiced concern at having lost a number of potential parking spaces.

Ebola

Ebola has been rapidly encompassing all news channels in the country. Although this disease is relatively new to the United States, it isn’t new to the continent of Africa.

The first Ebola outbreaks took place in rural villages in West Africa. As of Oct. 23, the epidemic has killed 4,922 people in five different countries, including: Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and most recently, the United States. The World Health Organization suspects that there could be around 20,000 cases of Ebola if action isn’t taken to overcome this epidemic. In contrast with Africa, the U.S. has only experienced four cases of Ebola, resulting in one death.

Election Review

Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor ran for his second term against his competitor, Republican Rep. Tom Cotton. Cotton attacked Pryor for his linkage to President Barack Obama, while Pryor attacked Cotton for his opposition to federal disaster aid, the funding of pediatric research at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the farm bill. For the majority of the election, Cotton was in the lead. On Nov. 4, Cotton won the election with 56.12% of the population’s vote, in contrast with Pryor’s 45.6% of the population’s vote.

Inspirational Player

19 year old Lauren Hill has served as an inspiration to many. During her senior year of high school, Hill was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor. It’s expected that she’s not going to live past December. Hill doesn’t let her cancer slow her down, though. Currently, Hill attends Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she plays basketball for their Division III team. Because of Hill’s critical condition, the NCAA moved up the team’s first basketball game. Mount St. Joseph’s basketball games are typically played in a court that seats approximately 2,000 people, but due to the incredible amount of fans wanting to see Hill play, there was a change in venue, resulting in the game being played in Cintas Center, which seats more than 10,000 people. Thousands of fans cheered her on as she scored the first two points of the game.

CATS ON CAMPUS TRIESCHMANN HOME TO COLONY

rospective students might find it strange that among all the squirrels, birds and chipmunks on campus, Hendrix is also home to a colony of cats. However, these felines are quickly becoming a part of the Hendrix community.

There are currently 19 cats living on campus next to Trieschmann and behind Hardin Hall. Freshman Hannah McCarthy has teamed up with Hendrix Brailler Darryl Manes to create an Odyssey project to spay, neuter and feed each cat. The overall goal is to stabilize the community of cats so that it won’t continue to grow. McCarthy also hopes to create a dedicated club that feeds the cats every evening and sponsors fundraisers to raise money for food.

“Darryl feeds every day and I started coming out to feed every single day with him, and within the first couple of weeks, we started formulating this Odyssey project and we had it turned in within the first month of school,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy received about $1500 of Odyssey funding, which covered the spaying and neutering of 28 cats.

However, nine of those cats

are now being adopted, meaning she now only has to spay and neuter the 19 remaining cats. The budget also covers the $35 weekly food expenses until the end of the semester.

The nine cats being adopted are kittens that can be easily domesticated. McCarthy took six of them back to her hometown of Saint Louis and the other three are currently with Manes.

Any other cats they see as becoming too domesticated will be put up for adoption, but their goal is to keep the colony together.

The cats are considered to be semi-feral in that they’re somewhat scared of humans. The ones that have been spayed and neutered have clipped ears so people know that they’ve been fixed. Every evening around 5 p.m., the cats can be seen gathering around McCarthy and Manes as they pry open cans of cat food and affectionately refer to each one by its individual name, including Peanut Butter, Paint and Mister Missy.

McCarthy and Manes have built relationships with each cat, and say that they’re not up for people to adopt. Manes also asks that students don’t interfere

with the cats.

McCarthy and Manes’ partnership happened by chance. McCarthy became aware of the cats on campus during her older sister’s college visits at Hendrix, and one day in the cafeteria, she overheard Manes talking about cats in the cafeteria line, and the rest was history.

“We just started talking and sat together, and he [Manes] told me that he feeds this colony on campus, and I told him that I really wanted to go see them and that I’d known there had been cats on campus,” McCarthy said. “We started talking about how great it would be to do an Odyssey and he how has done similar things with different colonies.”

Manes has completed similar projects with other cat colonies that include spaying, neutering and rereleasing.

“While I was growing up, animals were my companions. They were a refuge for me,” Manes said. “Some people see animals as subjects, but I think different people have different relationships with them.”

B

loodbath is too violent a term. Loss is too kind a term. Collapse is an excellent term. The Arkansas Democratic Party has capitulated and given way to a sweeping Republican majority in both legislative chambers.

All seven constitutional statewide offices went red on Tuesday as did every single congressional district and the one open Senate seat we had left. For all their work this election season, the Democrats have nothing. Well, that’s not entirely fair. Two ballot measure victories with ethics reform and the minimum wage prevent any further salt on the wound. But the only thing the members of the Arkansas left can do now is ask what all is left for future elections?

Not much it seems. Max Brantley, Editor of the Arkansas Times and a liberal icon within the state, characterized the election as nothing less than a fundamental shift in the electorate’s “genetic code.” Arkansas had been a Democratic stronghold for decades up till this election. The rest of the South had long since left the New Deal Coalition in favor of the GOP. To Max and many Democrats like him, this election represents the fall of a stronghold to Republicans in what has been a decades long process for the rest of the South. There’s just one major problem with this analysis. What constitutes a state’s political “genetic code?”

Does it include political party affiliation?

Presuming such a genetic code, defined for my purposes as a predisposition to vote in particular directions, exists, I’d argue it stretches deeper. It must include ideology. And on that front Arkansas has been unremarkable. We’ve by no means been as far right as our southern counterparts in Texas or Mississippi. But our Democratic Party isn’t exactly a force for progressive change. At best it could it be called centrist, a term that essentially disavows any policies that would remotely be considered to the left of the political spectrum.

This is, after all, Bill Clinton’s home state, the

man who made his name on breaking with Democratic policies and adopting Republican mantras on welfare, trade, crime, the budget, etc.

But when I frame the issue like that, it still sounds like the state underwent a significant “genetic” change of sorts. After all, we’ve elected candidates who aren’t Clintonian in any sense of the word. The key word there is elected. What this election displays more than anything else is that voters are switching the party they’re voting for as opposed to the ideology first and foremost.

Barrett Goodwin, an active campaign participant during the 2014 midterms, held a meeting with the Hendrix Union which attempted to explain the voting trends.

“Many of the voters today who voted Republican would have been voting Democrat in roughly the same proportions just ten years ago when all the statewide offices were blue instead of red.

The difference now is that the Republicans did great in securing the bulk of a voters who used to automatically vote Democrat without a second thought” Goodwin noted during his speech.

What this seems to imply is that the electorate hasn’t changed all that much ideologically relative to the ongoing changes in partisanship nationwide. But something got them to vote differently than they would have for decades in the past. Whatever that something was, it destroyed a long-standing political institution and elevated the Arkansas GOP to take its place. Because ideology doesn’t seem as large a factor, I’m hesitant to call it solely a genetic change as Max Brantley would. I have no doubt however that this change is here to stay. What happened in Arkansas in the past two elections was demonstrated nationwide in 2010. Since the parties themselves are polarizing, the electorate forced itself to realign away from things like the Blue Dog coalition which tried to get centerright votes for the Democrats. That means that the Republicans in Arkansas finally captured the

Along with the cold weather of winter comes the potential of snow. So yes, let’s curl up in our sweatpants, watch Netflix in bed all day and sip on a delicious cup of hot cocoa. After lying in bed all day, sometimes it’s nice to go outside and recreate an Elf snowball fight because, I mean, who doesn’t want to be Buddy the Elf (a.k.a. Dean Wiltgen)? Oh, and did I forget to mention that professors sometimes cancel class due to snow?

Along with Christmas comes the wonderful holiday that is New Year’s Eve. Whether you’re at home with your parents watching the New York City ball drop, or out at a raging party, enjoy your New Year’s Eve. Because soon enough, school will start up, and you’ll be desperately wishing it was that night all over again.

center-right vote that the Democratic Party has monopolized for years.

But what’s different now? An obvious reason thrown out is low voter turnout which the Democrats have repeatedly suffered from during midterm elections when the President’s popularity also enters a trough. Another reason is campaign organization. I had another chance to speak with Sam Spjut, another former volunteer who’d spent time in Washington observing Republican candidates. He pointed out that the Republicans are getting far more effective at utilizing techniques that their blue counterparts have used so effectively since President Obama’s debut. But Spjut had another key observation.

“It doesn’t hurt that, for the most part, that statewide candidates have been able to appeal to President Obama’s unpopularity. That challenge he issued to make the campaign about him was really significant because it made it so much harder for candidates nationwide, like Kay Hagan in North Carolina, to run away from him,” Spjut commented.

This last part hits on something very troubling.

If we accept the provision that this change hasn’t completely been a “genetic one,” but rather involves voters switching their default party, then there’s a troubling implication. This phenomena largely started as a reaction to President Obama’s tenure. Tom Cotton’s campaign in particular focused heavily on him and went to copious trouble to link Mark Pryor to the President; remember the debate parody when he purposely repeated Obama’s name despite being told not to? All this despite Obama having less than two years in office left. It’s worth asking in the future: what is it about the President that troubles the Republican Party so? Winning strategy or not, it’s strange. I could make guesses. But I’ll leave it to you, the readers.

Winter Break, AKA Hibernation

Yes, winter break is finally upon us. After a torturous week of finals, winter break is going to look like the Holy Grail. Delicious food, awesome presents and most importantly, sleep. Winter break is the time for you to do everything you wanted to do before, but couldn’t because, ya know, finals. Also, you conquered the first semester, so reward yourself with bountiful amounts of candy, sleep and doing absolutely nothing before the next semester hits us.

Age-Old Skeleton of Hendrix Student Found in Library Study Carrel

ONWAY, AR—After entering an empty study carrel in Bailey Library, two Hendrix students confirmed Friday that they discovered the dusty skeleton of a forgotten student sitting at the back of the room.

The skeleton, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, is reported to have been hunched over a large pile of final exam notes in complete and utter despair.

“I was minding my own business when all of a sudden I heard a scream come from the carrel next to mine,” sophomore David West told reporters late Friday. “I went over to see what was going on, and then I saw it.”

Sources say that the corpse was covered in dust and cobwebs as though it had sat, unnoticed and unbothered, for several decades.

“It was terrifying. Its eyes—those hollow holes—just kept on staring at me anguish and misery,” junior Kellie Benet said, adding that the remains still gave off the slight scent of cheap

coffee and desperation.

Experts speculate that the skeleton is an archaeological artifact from last spring’s finals week, although the exact age of the remains is yet to be confirmed. Nevertheless, the administration assures parents and students that it will get to the bottom of this mystery—pending approval from authorities.

“We will share the necessary information about the discovered remains, including its identity and origination, as soon as we are able,” the dean of students said at a press conference Monday.

“We are doing everything in our power to make sure this campus provides a secure and comfortable environment for students as they study for finals.”

Yet the speculation has continued at Hendrix.

Many wonder how the skeleton had gone unnoticed for so many months. Others theorize how long the student had sat in the carrel, slowly wasting away in front of his or her notes for exams. All, however, can agree that it could have happened to anyone.

“Considering I spend close to 20 hours in a study carrel at a time during finals week, yeah,

I’d say that I would have been as easy of a victim as anyone,” senior Amy Blanche told reporters.

Sophomore Tyler Hayes agreed.

“I’ve pulled all-nighters in those things,” he said, adding: “They’re kind of a no-man’s land. You’re just stuck in a hole for hours on end; no sunlight, no fresh air. It’s only you and your impending anxiety over your final exams. I’m actually surprised this is only the first time someone just withered away and died in there.”

At time of press, there was no confirmed estimate on the level of anxiety the average Hendrix student experiences during finals week.

Jeers The Struggle of Holiday Shopping

Ah, it’s that time of the year again; it’s time for the unending holiday shopping. Of course, we all love shopping, but do we love it when we’re suddenly having to buy presents for our family members, our close friends and really everyone we’ve ever met? Not so much. No worries, though. The long hours of relentless holiday shopping will pay off when you’re graciously thanked by all of your loved ones.

P.S. If you can’t think of any presents to get someone, you can’t go wrong with chocolate.

Perks (not) of a Winter Birthday

We all know the tradition Hendrix holds of throwing someone into the infamous fountain on their birthday, right? For those lucky ones who have summer birthdays, this isn’t a problem. Actually, the water might feel quite refreshing in the 100-degree heat on a hot, summer afternoon.

But it’s a different story for winter birthdays. The air will be cold, the fountain will be cold and really, your entire body will be cold. Not to worry, though. To prevent this coldness, rules need to be followed: 1) don’t reveal your birthday to anyone, 2) if you already broke rule #1, then simply say you’re going “out of town” on your birthday (such a shame), and 3) if you’re a bad liar and can’t follow rule #2, then avoid your friends at any and all costs.

The word no one likes to hear is approaching us. Yes, it’s time for finals. Finals will consist of countless hours of studying, sleep deprivation and the lack of a social life. It’s important to remember, though, that finals are doable. Rather than dreading them, prepare for them! Study hard, stay caffeinated (have coffee at hand at all times) and don’t procrastinate. Your finals won’t even know what’s coming.

New Sustainability Fund Seeks to Promote Green Projects on Campus

O

n the outskirts of campus, just past the library and before the Huntington apartments, lies an institutional vestige of Hendrix College. Unknown to many students (including yours truly at the onset of writing this piece), the Garden Club’s garden has existed for several years now as a testament to the environmental ingenuity of our students.

It started around 2010 when a group of students began an Odyssey project to form a permaculture garden on campus with perennial plants that could sustain themselves without much outside assistance. In the years after those students graduated, the garden was overseen by the residents of the Eco-House, but they routinely encountered funding issues. That is, until this past year. Senior Natalie Skinner currently heads the Garden Club, which formed to permanently manage the garden and expand it beyond the small plot it currently occupies.

“Our goal is to demonstrate to students that this wonderful community resource exists by trying to make it a permanent part of campus. That means improving the garden, building a fence around it, and ensuring someone is always there to maintain it,” Skinner said.

But how will this vision be realized? The recent

budget cuts undertaken by Student Senate’s Financial Committee, alongside campus-wide departmental cuts, mean that nearly everyone has had to delay grand projects in favor of more realistic, financially advantageous goals. However, this may very well change next year with the introduction of a sustainability fund at Hendrix.

The idea of a sustainability fund came from the Environmental Concerns Committee (ECC) last year. They looked at the figures from comparable, small liberal arts colleges nationwide and found that most have some sort of fund that students contribute to for environmentally friendly initiatives on campus. The average amount raised per school is approximately $75,000-$100,000 per year.

The funds would work similarly to our current student activity fund which, as part of their required expenses, students currently pay into via a $150 student activity fee. A sustainability fee would be a required $20 fee that would contribute into the established sustainability fund.

Senior William O’Brochta, the chair of ECC and one of the original proponents of a sustainability fund, projected that this would raise about $55,000 annually for the fund.

paign to make the sustainability fee a reality. Following his research, a poll was sent out to the student body. Of the 318 students who responded, 91 percent supported a sustainability fee in some form while a further 84 percent supported the idea of it being included in or similar to the current student activity fee structure.

Based on these results, ECC submitted a proprosal to various faculty members, including the Board of Directors, the President, and the Dean of Students. O’Brachta also gave a presentation before the Senate.

In response, the Board will be voting on whether to include a sustainability fee in next year’s annual fee structure during their upcoming February meeting. Prior to that meeting, a student-wide referendum will be held to get one last measurement of student opinion.

“The support for this so far has been outstanding and we fully expect it to pass. The president, the Dean, Student Senate, and Bill Smith [a member of the board] have all agreed to it. There is no requirement for students to say yes, but an approving vote would certainly help it pass the Board meeting quicker,” O’Brochta said.

What, then, can the sustainability fund be expected to support? Would it replace or offset

existing expenditures? In O’Brochta’s words, the money would primarily go to “capital projects that seek to develop innovative ways to make Hendrix a more sustainable campus.”

In short, the funding would be entirely independent of existing projects like ECC. It also excludes routine expenditures like parties, consumption spending, club activities, projects that should obviously be handled by the college (recycling bins), or salaries.

Students, teachers, faculty members, etc. would all be eligible to apply for project funding, provided that they could detail what exactly it was that they aimed to do and demonstrate some return-on-investment from the campus.

These projects come largely in three categories.

“The first category includes things to assist in monitoring efforts, like a specialized meter for example. Another category includes one-time purchases of equipment. The last includes funding for longer-term initiatives,” O’Brochta said.

Whether or not a project receives funding would be determined by a special committee that would be chaired by a student – either the ECC chair or someone they designate. Other members could include the president of the Garden Club, the Senate Treasurer, the Chair of the Environmental Studies department, the Dean, and additional

members representing the stakes of parties interested in sustainability.

Once a project is funded, the applicants would be responsible for ensuring its execution and the project itself would undergo periodic review to determine whether its funding should continue.

“The sustainability fund is paid into by students and controlled by students,” O’Brachta said. “The committee would be chaired by a student and the body, while reporting to the Senate, would hopefully be placed in the office of the president which would enable it to be a bridge between students and the faculty. Plus, the money won’t just go away. It will roll over year to year to hopefully keep funding new things.”

Such is the Garden Club’s hope. The club also hopes to utilize the sustainability fund for its expansion projects, which have been noted by O’Brochta to be “exactly the kind the fund would look to cover.”

The garden as it currently stands consists of five beds, each one 17 by 2 feet long. In order to ensure that the garden can continue throughout the year, the president, Natalie Skinner and her team hope to build a small greenhouse to serve as both a repository and a learning tool for students.

Among other projects, the club hopes to acquire funding for include a new drip watering system.

It would involve a one-time purchase of the required equipment and the setup could be done by hand.

However, some of the other projects might not be covered by the fund. Building a better fence around the site or providing stipend money for someone to manage the garden over the summer likely wouldn’t classify as the kinds of capital projects the sustainability fund seeks to assist.

Other projects, like a pavilion, would be items the college itself would have to consider due to the cost. It is important to realize from these examples that the sustainability fund isn’t a catchall source of funding to fill in the gaps left behind

by Senate budgetary cuts.

When the pavilion comes up, the greenhouse becomes operational, and the water system drips away, the garden will have begun to achieve its original purpose of creating a new gathering space for learning on campus.

The sustainability fund, if it comes into existence, will have played its part in contributing to that promise through the fulfillment of its own promise. It will have acted as a conduit for the creation of sustainable, open, and accessible opportunities to learn. For a college that advertises itself this way already, this is a step in the right direction.

Overheard with Swampbird: One band’s success inside and outside the Hendrix Bubble by guest writers Anna Conard, KHDX Promotions Director, and Anna McCorquodale, KHDX Programming Director

I

n the parking lot of his Front Street apartment, Dylan Veron used to perch on the hood of his car and listen to KHDX. Now, three years later, KHDX sat down with Veron at Harvest Music Festival 2014 to discuss Swampbird’s success.

Veron and close friend Zac Hale, both of the Hendrix class of 2012, started playing music together in their Front Street apartments during their second year at Hendrix. This casual collaboration developed into Swampbird, a fivepiece folk-rock band now based in Little Rock.

Swampbird’s story is a story of the Hendrix bubble, which as Veron put it, “has both positive and negative components, more positive than negative in my opinion.”

Starting out, Swampbird found their first gig on Hendrix campus at one of Conway’s ‘finest’ music venues, Brick House. There, they took the stage with Tyrannosaurus Chicken and May the Peace of the Sea Be With You, two other bands that included Hendrix student musicians. This Hendrix-based community augmented into a music scene in its own right with regular shows at White House. Veron described White House at that time as “a haven,” welcoming student bands and music lovers. At its height, White House hosted its own music festival with a 16-band

lineup, including even larger touring groups like The Weeks.

“Some of those shows just got so out of control,” Veron explained. “We’ve been really fortunate to play a lot of big rooms now… but nothing will be like those White House shows.”

After forming a fan base amongst Hendrix students, Swampbird ventured out of the Hendrix bubble to play their first show off campus. On the last day of fall semester their senior year, the band played a “new music test” night at The Rev Room, a well-established Little Rock venue.

“I think they paid us like 100 bucks [for playing that show], which was a lot more than I thought we’d make,” Veron said, laughing.

While the crowd at The Rev Room was filled with Hendrix friends, Swampbird made a crucial new connection that night. The boys met Pete Campos, who eventually became the band’s general manager. For the past few years, Campos has helped Swampbird book shows, communicate with venues, and elevate their status from student musicians to a recognizable Arkansan band.

The group has gone on to play the Legends of Arkansas Festival and, for the past two years, River Fest and Harvest Fest. Harvest Fest in particular holds in a special place in Veron’s heart.

“I’ve volunteered [at] this festival, I’ve snuck

into this festival, and now I get to play this festival,” Veron said.

The crowd at their Harvest Fest show this year was certainly a testament to the journey they’ve taken to get there. One could easily spot the band members’ fellow Hendrix grads and other close friends, who boisterously yelled out the lyrics to every song. There were a number of current Hendrix students, like ourselves, wanting to put a face and a sound to the name that is so often mentioned in Conway. But the sizeable crowd was truly heterogeneous: from hula hoops and dreadlocks to cowboy boots and trucker hats, all types came to see Swampbird.

“We’ll do these country shows [where] it’s just cowboy hats and starched shirts, and then we’ll play White House with all these crust punk kids.

And we come out here [to play Harvest Fest]. I like to think it’s something special we have that we can fit in these different little slots,” Veron said. “And if I can play a White House show on a Friday night… I can handle anything.”

Swampbird will officially release their new EP “Something to See” Jan. 1, 2015 on all major media outlets (iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc). Check their pages on Facebook and Bandcamp for updates on their subsequent national tour, also in January.

FEATURE Sophomore intern prepares for ministry UMYF Scholar Sarah Partee Works With Local Church

S

ophomore Sarah Partee is a part of the United Methodist Scholars Fellowship at Hendrix. This is a scholarship program for students involved in the United Methodist Church.

“I got a letter from the school. There’s music scholarships and a leadership scholarship through the Miller Center, and then there’s this United Methodist scholarship through the chaplain’s office, so I got information on this and applied,” Partee said.

The scholarship requires recipients to participate in various projects and activities both on and off campus.

“We’re supposed to go to four Tuesday talks every semester, and four additional things that aren’t on the list. So my internship can count to that,” Partee said.

Despite all of these activities, Partee stressed the religious aspect to the program.

“It’s definitely spiritual; it’s definitely religious based, but there can be service aspects through it,” Partee said.

Partee was also offered the chance to be involved in an internship.

“I am a visitation intern at First United Methodist Church, which is just five minutes down the road,” Partee said. “I first heard about it through Wayne Clark, who is the chaplain here.”

Partee, along with junior Shannon Abbott, both participate in the internship. Partee visits around four people a week while also meeting with advisors.

“It’s a collaboration with Hendrix and Wayne is our advisor, and we have an advisor at the church. We each have a list, Shannon and I, of different elderly people, some in nursing homes, some in their own homes. They may be widowed or something of that sort, and we just go and talk with them and visit,” Partee said.

Partee is also a religious studies major at Hendrix, and is considering continuing that study after school.

“I am in interested in going into ministry,” Partee said. “I don’t necessarily have a particular area. I don’t necessarily want to be a youth minister. I don’t know exactly what I want to do in ministry.”

Partee is using the internship as a learning opportunity. Her visits have allowed her to see a different side of things.

“That was a main reason I wanted to do this internship, just to have a little better understanding of different opportunities in the church,” Partee said. “It’s very interesting to learn about things, and also to deal with people one on one when I visit. Some really don’t enjoy the visit and

don’t want me to come back, which is totally their right but that is uncomfortable. But some really love visiting and telling me about their lives.”

While her experiences have varied, there have certainly been some fascinating moments in her visits. It provides a unique perspective on these people’s lives.

“One of my favorite visits was actually about two hours long, which is not typical. Usually they are maybe about 45 minutes long. I could have ended it but he was really enjoying it. His name was Jim and he was a retired Methodist minister, and fortunately he was very excited that I - as a woman - was interested in going into ministry. I’ve definitely had some push back on that, mostly from women though, which I think is interesting. He just had a lot of fascinating stories about places he had worked. For a couple years he was a chaplain in the air force,” Partee said.

Partee has experienced some rejection during her visits.

“I had one woman who grew up Baptist, and Baptists do not ordain women but Methodists do. She told me: ‘I don’t believe in women ministers,’” Partee said.

Despite this, Partee has not been discouraged or even apologetic about the differences in beliefs with the people she visits. It is interesting to note that the United Methodist Scholars program is mostly made up of women, though this might be a result of the demographics of Hendrix.

“I didn’t apologize. I didn’t want to apologize, because I don’t think that’s something I need to apologize for,” Partee said.

Partee encourages people to participate in similar services through the Miller Center, pointing out that being religious does not exclude you from these internship and service opportunities.

“The Miller Center itself isn’t religious but it’s connected with the chaplain’s office which is religious. I think sometimes people get confused with that. The Miller Center is service, calling and vocation, and then there’s the chaplain’s office. But both together are really incredible services here,” Partee said.

Partee understands that many students are not religious, or at least are not Christian, but encourages them to be involved on campus.

“I think if people understood that Miller Center does not equal Jesus then maybe they would be more willing to seek out services there, because they do a lot to help connect with internships. It can be non-profits; it doesn’t have to be churches,” Partee said.

SIBLING RIVALRY

They say a sports team is like a family, but the Hendrix field hockey team is taking this to a whole new level. Not only are there three pairs of sisters on the team, but their increased team chemistry is leading to an improved season on and off the field. By Casey Hawkins

hese sisters include senior Erika and freshman Vanessa Jaso, senior Lauren and freshman Sarah Shklanko, and senior Lotte and freshman Elisabeth Kraaijenbrink. Many may ask whether this phenomenon is purposeful or just a really strange coincidence. The answer is a little bit of both.

“It was just a recruiting thing,” Erika said. “One of the girls on our team was recruited because her sister used to play, and she graduated so she’s no longer on the team, but it started with recruiting her, and then my coach started talking to us [the seniors] about trying to get our sisters to come. My sister was looking around and she wanted to play field hockey, but she was also looking at some schools that were in our conference. It was almost like we were going to have to play against each other, but once she came out and visited, I think the warmness of Hendrix convinced her. So it was also a little bit of a coincidence.”

This recruiting tactic is employed by head coach Rebecca Begley for good reason. Last year the team experienced a winning drought, but it was mostly due to THEHENDRIXCOLLEGEPROFILE.COM

lack of personnel. There were only 11 fit players on the squad for most of the season, and two of these were goalkeepers playing field positions. In field hockey, each team plays with 11 players, so last year, if a Hendrix player was fatigued and had to be subbed out, the team was forced to play a man down. However, this year’s freshman class has provided more depth.

“It was really difficult to have our roster be as deep as some of these other teams that have about 25 girls and are just subbing people on who are exhausted,” Erika said. “But this year we brought in a solid seven freshmen that matched up to the level of play that older players were at.”

At the time of writing, the team sits at 3-14-0. However, the seniors have seen improvements across the board from last year.

“Last year it was hard because we didn’t have a lot of incoming freshmen, so we didn’t have a lot of players,” Lauren said. “This year I feel like we just gel so much more together, and I’m not saying that’s just because we have so many sisters on the team, but because we

read each other a lot better and play more as a team.”

“Even in our losses we’re a significantly better team this year than we were last year,” Erika said. “We’ve come a long way in terms of establishing our style and the way that we work as a unit on the field. We’ve just kind of struggled with scoring, so that’s what put us behind some of the other teams.”

Aside from the on-the-field improvements the freshmen bring, the development of the personal relationships among the siblings has improved team chemistry. Erika and Lauren add that their relationships with their sisters have never been stronger.

“We’ve never really had a reason to hang out for so long,” Erika said of her sister. “Back home we would have school at different places so we wouldn’t see each other all day, and then we had our separate homework or had to go to our separate sporting things. We’ve never had a one group of people that we’ve both mutually had to hang out with for a significant amount of time. I was a little bit worried about it at first because I’ve never played with my sister and I didn’t even go to high school with her, so we didn’t really get along that much back home. But since she’s been on the team we’ve been closer than ever and it’s been really nice to have someone on it who’s not just your friend but is related to you, and we’ve gotten along really well,” Erika continued.

“It’s really nice having my sister here because she plays similar to how I play,” Lauren said. “It’s easy to play with her because I know exactly what she’s thinking and where’s she’s going to play the ball. I’ve never actually played with her before because during my senior of high school she was on the freshmen team, so we were in the same program but we weren’t on the

same team. It’s been really nice being able to play with her and it’s awesome that we have two other sisters on the team. We’re one giant family.”

Sarah, Lauren’s younger sister, not only feels a stronger connection with her sister, but also to the other two pairs of siblings. She and Vanessa are even roommates.

“It’s so fun having three pairs of siblings on the team,” Sarah said. “I think all of us have become very close. We connect with each other very well and can anticipate what they are going to do on the field next.

We all are really good at reading each others’ next movement. It’s interesting to see how every sibling has taken on the responsibility to take care of each other in any way that they might need. I think it has made us all become more mature.”

With improved recruiting, increased team chemistry, and a talented freshman class, the future looks bright for the field hockey team. Even though she will be graduating this year, Erika sees the improvement carrying over for years to come.

“Recruiting has always been kind of hard considering we’re the only team in Arkansas, high school or college level, that has field hockey, so you can’t recruit in-state,” Erika said. “It’s hard to recruit but our new coach is really good at it and so she’s been bringing in some pretty big classes. We already have some people committing for next year and that’s never been a thing in the past. I think we’ll keep bringing in bigger and bigger rosters, and a couple years out we could be the ones hosting conference tournaments.”

INTERSTELLAR: An Imperfect Adventure

nterstellar,” directed by the infamously daring Christopher Nolan (“Memento,” “The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Inception”), takes place in a not-so-distant future in which food is in short supply due to widespread blight.

Soon enough, the earth will no longer be livable.

The film centers on Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and his family. Cooper is a man with a lot of angst, mostly due to the fact that he no longer has a vocational place in society. Because there is so much emphasis on fighting food scarcity by way of farming, high-tech jobs have fallen by the wayside, rendering Cooper’s NASA and engineering background utterly futile.

After setting the stage, the film bombards us with a bunch of only-happens-in-the-movies kind of coincidences. By way of a convoluted miracle, Cooper and his 10-year-old daughter discover a mysterious set of coordinates. The coordinates lead them to an undercover NASA base that happens to be located just miles from their home.

What’s even more ridiculous about this moment is that, within mere minutes, they recruit Cooper, apparently a remarkable flyer, to pilot a high-stakes mission that has been in the works for years. And this is not a run-of-the-mill visit to the moon; they are planning to travel through a wormhole near Saturn, enter a new solar system, and survey the habitability of a dozen planets.

The return date is indefinite.

After grappling with the pain of leaving behind his family, Cooper decides that he has a duty to

take part in what he understands to be a noble effort to save humanity. If it is even possible, McConaughey plays up his misunderstood-charmer persona to newly cloying heights.

Despite the frustrations of such a contrived beginning, “Interstellar” ends up raising some pretty interesting, and scientifically accurate, questions. On the first planet they stop, one hour is equal to seven years back on Earth. As much as they try to limit their stay there, they end up racking up 23 years worth of time. In one of the most emotionally raw scenes of the film, Cooper watches clips of his two children growing up without him. The team starts to wonder whether or not anyone will be left on earth by the time that they return home. Furthermore, some parties start considering the prospect of abandoning the humans of earth and starting over completely. After all, they’ve always had a supply of fertilized embryos on board as a possibility for last-ditch re-population.

The movie’s ending is where things start to get a little sticky. I must applaud “Interstellar” for attempting to provide an explanation as to why the opening conceit is so unbelievable. That said, this task proves too ambitious. Ultimately, Nolan’s mad-dash to forge meaningful, metaphysical connections between the past and present feels forced and less artful than in his previous films.

At the end of the day, “Interstellar” is a gripping, entertaining flick, but not quite as significant or sharp as it claims to be.

Restaurant Saves the World from Hunger

as anyone else noticed the new hip restaurant on Oak Street? Sounds cool, but what’s up with the name?

According to their website: “Over 6000 children die each day due to starvation and malnutrition.

Tacos 4 Life and Pitza 42 exist to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. For every meal purchased in these restaurants, a meal is donated to a child in need. Meal for Meal.”

Tacos 4 Life (and its sibling restaurant, Pitza 42) is literally just that: you buy a taco (or any of the multiple other things on the menu) and a part of the amount you pay is donated to a child who is starving or malnourished. Who knew you could save someone’s life and feed yourself at the same time? It’s a win-win!

I entered the crowded establishment on a rainy Tuesday night. As I waited in line and looked around, I was taken aback by the interior of the building. It was dimly lit with wacky lamps and each and every surface was covered. There was a wall that acknowledged the 33 local donors involved, a wall with stories of children who had been helped, as well as a chalkboard with the number of meals served to date. The tables and chairs were mismatched, and one table had thank you cards and letters from children who had been helped. A photo booth was stationed near the entrance. However, the wall that attracted me the most was covered in merchandise.

It was covered in shelves containing necklaces, sunglasses, funny t-shirts and bumper stickers, all contributing to the cause.

I decided to order nachos with queso and a chipotle chicken burrito for $10. Items on the menu range from $4 – $12, including pretty filling tacos, rice bowls, quesadillas and burritos. There is a lot of variety in terms of what you can order according to your mood and taste. It doesn’t have

to be just tacos!

After I ordered I received a buzzer, which buzzed when the food was ready. It didn’t take long at all.

The nachos themselves were seasoned with unique spices and the queso was particularly delicious. Both came in a pretty decent serving size. Soon after came buzz for the burrito, which was definitely the size of my face, which made me happy. A unique blend of veggies, rice, cheese and chipotle chicken was just what I needed.

They’re giving Chipotle a run for their money!

While I was eating, I noticed that the line never came to an end. As it moved forward, more and more people entered the restaurant. Most were families with children and, not surprisingly, college students. With Conway’s status as a college town, it makes sense that several students from both University of Central Arkansas and Hendrix would be present at this type of restaurant.

While it has a homey feel with the dim lights and couch chairs, it also emits a vibrant energy with its colorful merchandise and engaging memorabilia. The prices are good enough for college students who are looking for a distraction from cafeteria food or want a fun night out with friends, and also affordable enough for families in the area. Moreover, the meal-for-meal aspect of this restaurant adds another layer of appeal to it. For families, it means educating their children about philanthropy and instilling in them a love for charity as they learn about hunger in the world.

For college students, it means giving to others in a unique, new way and still doing what we love to do: eating.

I can safely say that Tacos 4 Life has quickly become a very popular location in Conway, and is a great place to go for a meal if you haven’t been! photos Megan Prettyman DECEMBER 2014

The winter film season is notorious for its variety. We see the unabashedly mainstream (interested in very little other than reaping a quick holiday buck), the accessibly artsy (making a mad-dash for the Oscars), and everything in between. I’ve done by best to represent this truly mixed bag.

Safe Haven is a law designed to protect babies.

What is Safe Haven? In Arkansas, the Safe Haven law allows a parent to give up an infant anonymously. The purpose of Safe Haven is to prevent babies from being hurt or killed by unsafe abandonment. Unsafely abandoning a baby puts the infant in extreme danger that can result in the baby’s death.

It also is illegal, with severe consequences.

There is an option. Don’t abandon your baby.

Winter Cinema:

Coming Soon

Hitting theaters on Nov. 21, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” will follow in the footsteps of other multi-part adaptations like “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows,” “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn,” and “The Hobbit.” Aside from taking part in this gimmicky trend, “Mockingjay – Part 1” looks promising. The second film in the series offered very little closure, leaving the viewer (as well as Katniss Everdeen) awestruck at the promise of a burgeoning rebellion in District 13. What’s even more refreshing about the trailer is that it puts romance on the back burner. Instead of pandering to younger viewers by centering on Katniss’s love triangle with Peeta and Gale, the film seems more concerned with weighty political strife.

More than anything, I just feel grateful that we’ll be seeing Phillip Seymour Hoffman on the big screen one more time.

According to the trailer, “Inherent Vice” (Dec. 12) has the potential to be the most lighthearted film from Paul Thomas Anderson in years. Based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon, “Inherent Vice” chronicles the adventures of Doc Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), a graceless, dope-smoking private eye from the 1970s, as he attempts to track down his ex-girlfriend’s missing billionaire boyfriend. Though the trailer is sparse in terms of definitive plot points, it still manages to be attention-grabbing, thanks in large part to a colorfully suave Los Angeles and some playfully girlish narration from Joanna Newsome.

“American Sniper” (Dec. 25), directed by Clint Eastwood, takes a close look at the life of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history, as he traverses through four tours in Iraq. Counter to my expectations, however, the trailer doesn’t showcase a single gunshot.

Alternatively, it’s contemplative and inactive, presenting only one extended scene of Kyle as he solemnly deliberates on the pros and cons of shooting a suspicious pedestrian in the street. I don’t know if the trailer is indicative of the film’s overall tone, but I certainly hope so.

“The Interview” (Dec. 25), starring James Franco and Seth Rogen, features two ill-respected celebrity journalists who miraculously score the opportunity to interview Kim Jong-un, the supreme leader of North Korea.

When the CIA catches wind of their impending visit to Pyongyang, however, they recruit the pair to assassinate the dictator, unaware of their tactical incompetence. The trailer looks as ridiculous as you’d expect—bromance, explosions, and silliness abound. Though this film is rooted in modern-day politics, I scarcely expect it to offer any substantive commentary.
