W

ith just a little research online, an exhaustive list of the most elaborate April Fool’s pranks can be at your fingertips. As it turns out, googling “best April Fool’s Day jokes” offers much more entertainment than writing a thesis does, and as a result of my procrastination, I’ve assembled a lineup of my favorite ideas – replace Oreo filling with toothpaste, hide a toy snake in stacks of produce at the grocery store, disguise onions as caramel apples, plant and grow grass in someone’s keyboard – and that’s just to name a few.

After a substantial amount of studying, I’ve realized that my first memorable April Fool’s prank pales in comparison to the majority of the pranks listed online. It must have been in first grade or so, and I, along with my best friend that lived two doors down, thought we’d masterminded the perfect plan.

Giggling incessantly, we wrapped our forearms in toilet paper and tried to convince anyone who passed by my friend’s front yard that we’d fallen

out of a tree and broken our arms. Whether it was the flimsy toilet paper or our unconvincing performances that gave us away, not a single person was swayed.

After a few years of maturation, I’ve decided that the key to a successful April Fool’s Day joke is subtlety. Drawing attention to your prank – for example, giggling or being overly forceful when offering someone a toothpaste-filled Oreo – will make people see through it immediately.

That’s why, for the April Fool’s issue of The Profile, we’ve maintained somewhat of an air of mystery. We’ve covered April’s main events and topics of discussion, as we would normally, but with one twist: only half of the stories in this issue are real. The other half are spoofs. We invite you to join in the fun and try to separate fact from fiction, and if you’re stumped, you can compare your conclusions to the key on page 17.

That being said, the satire articles contained herein are just that – satire. Nothing written in such an article is factually true. While some

names and places may be used, none of the actions described or quotes are real.

The spoof stories are meant to entertain. In writing these articles, The Profile aims to take a fun or sarcastic spin on issues on or off campus; it does not intend to insult or place blame. We want to be clear which articles are satirical, and that’s why we’ve included a list in the back.

However, if there are concerns with anything that this issue contains, I will be happy to address them. My email address and phone number can be found on the contents page. Please feel free to contact me with any comments or questions.

Now that you’ve been warned, I hope you enjoy the rest of the issue and find yourself questioning what’s real and what isn’t. If you do, wave me down on campus and let me know: that way, I’ll finally experience the satisfaction of pulling a prank while maintaining at least a little subtlety.

Leading the Way Towards Diversity: Dr. Dionne Jackson named VP of Diversity and Inclusion

H

endrix alumna and professor of education Dr. Dionne B. Jackson ’96 was recently named the college’s first Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer. Created as part of the college’s 2015-2020 strategic plan, the position is aimed at increasing diversity and inclusion efforts on campus grounds.

“Since my position has been announced, there have been several opportunities that have come my way that I look forward to considering when I begin July 1,” Jackson said.

The position covers many broad areas of strategic planning. For instance, Jackson will take the reins on continuing efforts to define Hendrix’s mission for diversity. She will also work with institutional data to understand the ways in which Hendrix is held accountable for the diversity of students on campus. Finally, Jackson will examine mechanisms to meet the goal retention of student diversity.

But Jackson’s duties will span beyond spreadsheets to collaborative work with students.

Jackson hopes to continue conversations of diversity and inclusion on campus through exploring the creation of a center of inclusive community. Feedback from students, faculty, staff and administration, and the board of trustees will factor into considerations for Hendrix’s programming and training needs.

“One of [my opportunities] will be faculty development initiatives and working with the associate provost for teaching and learning, and our current provost thinking about faculty development programming that they might want me to collaborate with them on, and working with the task force for an inclusive community,” Jackson said.

Jackson will also work with individuals outside of Hendrix, specifically with Hendrix’s Aspire Scholars and the KIPP Delta Students.

Jackson pointed out that she will explore a prebaccalaureate program for junior high school students.

“We want to help students to become more exposed to Hendrix, and let them know that we are here as an institution,” Jackson said. “That we are a fantastic liberal arts opportunity for students within the state of Arkansas, and so helping juniors to really think about Hendrix College as a place that they might consider as far as their educational choices.”

Many members of the Hendrix community are excited to see Jackson taking this position for the campus, especially since Jackson has been a student, staff member, and professor at APRIL 2016

the college. Jackson also sees her experience in these three areas of the Hendrix community as an advantage.

“As a ’96 graduate of Hendrix, I vividly remember the efforts that were put forth to recruit myself and other minority students that I went to school with at Little Rock Hall High School,” Jackson said. “I remember the care that [was] given to get me here.”

Jackson also notes that her own life gives her a passion for this work. Not only does she consider the fact that she was a minority and first generation college student, but she also considers the future students of Hendrix.

“I have a child who’s very interested as an African American male student to be a student at Hendrix,” Jackson said. “And so I often think about what I would want the community to be for him.”

Deadly squirrel flu strikes Hendrix

O

n Thursday, March 17, three Hendrix students were admitted to a local hospital with a bizarre set of symptoms: sudden hair growth, swollen cheeks, and the most telling symptom - small bite marks on their arms and legs.

The signs of the squirrel flu, or H2N12, appeared back in February when a few squirrels on campus began exhibiting abnormal behavior.

A representative from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), speaking anonymously, reported several tips called in on the evening of Feb. 23.

“Several students and community members called into Hendrix Public Safety as well as the Conway Police Department reporting a group of squirrels running across campus and attacking students,” the representative said. “The reports were eventually sent up to the CDC, where we immediately recognized the signs of squirrel flu and sent a containment team to the campus.”

Following the incidents in February, several squirrels were placed under quarantine to prevent the spread. There is no vaccination or cure for squirrel flu, so several members of the Hendrix community feared that not enough was being done to prevent the spread of this deadly

disease.

“I don’t think the school or the government has taken the steps needed to keep everyone safe,” a Hendrix junior said after learning of the squirrel quarantine. “There are a lot of squirrels on campus, and we’re just supposed to trust that they got all the infected ones? We can’t be sure of that. I can’t even walk to class without fear of being attacked. We need to get rid of these squirrels for the safety of everyone on campus.”

However, no additional incidents were reported for a while, so no further action was taken. That is, until March 18.

According to the report from the Conway Police Department, three students were leaving the library at approximately 11:30 p.m. when they were approached by a large group of about 20 squirrels. The students attempted to run away from the squirrel mob but were quickly surrounded and attacked. Each student suffered as many as 15 bites all over their arms and legs and were admitted to the hospital at that time.

“It was terrifying,” one of the unnamed students from the report said. “The squirrels were running around and squealing, and they were foaming at the mouth. All their fur had fallen

out and their skin was all gray. They looked like zombies or something.”

All Hendrix students are being urged to exercise the utmost care whenever they are outside and to look out for the symptoms of squirrel flu.

“The symptoms of the squirrel flu in squirrels are pretty easy to recognize,” the CDC representative said. “Infected squirrels will generally be hairless, sluggish (unless provoked), and red-eyed. If you suspect a squirrel has been infected, get far away from it and report it to the authorities.”

Squirrel flu is transmittable to humans, so the CDC recommends looking for suspicious behavior in your friends and classmates.

“Humans that have been infected will act in a very particular way,” the CDC representative said. “They will attempt to store food in their cheeks and climb trees. They will also have sudden, unexplained cravings for acorns and their cheeks might be enlarged.”

The CDC is continuing their investigation into the current state of the squirrel flu. For now, students are advised to avoid squirrels at all costs.

Moving into Hulen and Buhler:

Lack of housing forces students to live in abandoned buildings

hanks to a disproportionate abundance of rising seniors, and therefore a lack of student housing for the 2016-2017 school year, a group of Hendrix students will find themselves inhabiting the once abandoned, asbestos-ridden academic buildings of Buhler and Hulen Halls.

“The academic buildings are in fine condition for living, and due to the lack of housing next year, we really don’t have much of a choice,” a residence life employee, who came up with the idea to transform the buildings, said.

“Although there have been concerns on campus about the possible health risks associated with the supposed asbestos, I don’t see it being an issue.”

Yet according to a sweeping amount of research, asbestos is an issue. The National Cancer Institute states that when asbestos fibers are breathed in, they stay in the lungs and accumulate over time, which can lead to the contraction of certain cancers. Asbestos has been strongly linked to lung cancer, and it could cause throat, kidney, esophagus and gallbladder cancers. The National Cancer Institute also cites asbestosis – an inflammatory condition affecting the lungs – as another result of exposure to asbestos.

When this information was brought up to the same residence life employee, her only response was that the Internet is a not a credible source for retrieving information and declined to comment any further.

The accumulation of Hendrix students slated to be living in Buhler and Hulen Halls came about by bid points. Rising seniors with the lowest bid points were automatically shunned from apartment living, and then put against rising sophomores and juniors to see who would secure a place in the dorms.

Oddly enough, teachers are supporting this system as it provides a better incentive for performing well in class compared to the latter system.

“I really see this as a way for students to buckle up and get serious about their studies,” one teacher, hoping that this system will continue even after the housing dilemma ends, said.

“No more Martin Hall shenanigans on Friday nights. Now students will really want to focus on schoolwork so they don’t have to be resigned to live an asbestos-filled life.”

The administration is also on board and is talking about keeping this system permanently

“Well, I certainly wasn’t looking to live a freshman-like existence again, and since I was excluded from my rightful place in senior housing, I decided to take a chance on this creative solution,” she said. “I can see this turning out really well, actually. For starters, I will be closer to my classes and the cafeteria, which means I will spend less time commuting.”

When asked about the possible health risks associated with these buildings, which were evacuated because of asbestos, she was not concerned. “I don’t see the issue there. It’s not like the buildings are falling apart or anything,” she said.

Other students do not feel so secure about the new housing, however.

Due to the unorganized nature of the whole ordeal, residence life is still working on how the buildings will be structured in terms of co-ed or separate gendered living between the two buildings. Many other questions remain as well, such as the lack of showers, properly working AC units, storage space, room dimensions, and the overall infrastructure of the buildings in general.

Give Them the Axe

Sword club poses continuous threat to campus safety

E

very Friday afternoon, they gather. A small group of smiling students gleefully brandish their colorful, duct tapewrapped weapons. They cheer, laugh and enjoy each other’s company, all while viciously attacking one another with their beloved swords.

This gruesome and bizarre club has been a facet of the Hendrix community for years, despite constantly proving to be a menace to campus safety. Their most recent act of violence involved members of this shadowy organization plastering flyers all around campus tempting students to attack their friends in a so-called “game” of assassins.

It is time that we stand up to this dangerous organization. We must not let them turn our peaceful, friendly campus into a violent, merciless nightmare.

We do not even know what the purpose of this nefarious organization might be. According to the Hendrix website, they “seek to entertain both ourselves and others through a myriad of games and events featuring fake weapons made out of foam and duct tape.”

First of all, how can we be certain that these weapons are “fake” and that there isn’t something far more dangerous than “foam” inside them? All sorts of dark secrets could lurk behind the distractingly pleasant layer of duct tape.

There is also the issue of “entertainment.” Can we really call this violent spectacle “entertainment” like the Romans did with the gladiators of yore? We can no longer allow this sort of violence to be tolerated simply because it is “entertaining.”

Finally, there is the far more frightening concern that sword club could have even more nefarious purposes. They could be attempting to raise a militia. They could be planning attacks on other organizations on campus in an attempt to prove their dominance.

There is, quite simply, no way of knowing exactly what these weapon-yielding maniacs could be planning to do.

Even if the club does not serve an ulterior motive (which again, cannot be proven), there are still issues with the way the club operates. For one, they promote a culture of sword violence

which must be stopped. We live in a world where we are already so desensitized to violence, and sword violence is no exception.

The motto of the sword club, according to its constitution, is “a silly club for silly people.” As a proud supporter of anti-sword legislation, I think that sword violence is not something with which to joke around. Sword culture is violent and outdated and has no place on our campus.

Fellow members of the Hendrix community, it is time we say enough is enough.

We will no longer be terrorized by sword club and its violent attacks. We will no longer allow this dangerous organization to thrive on our campus while keeping its true motives in the dark. We must cut sword club out of our campus culture immediately.

Social Scientist Senators

Why we need more than PoliSci and IR major representation

T

hough it is not unusual for social scientists to be active in the Hendrix College Student Senate, this year seems to have been particularly magnetic. Out of those elected to the 2016-2017 Senate, half of the voting members belong to departments that are a part of the social sciences area—and only two of those social scientists are unaffiliated with the department of politics and international relations.

As members of the Hendrix community, each of us falls into several distinct groups. We all belong to a housing unit, a class-cohort, several student organizations and an academic department. Each department resides in one of three areas: social sciences, natural sciences and humanities. And yet, despite our multi-faceted student identity, each of us selects only two senators for direct representation on Senate: one for our housing unit and one for our class-year.

Because our individual experiences define our issue stances, Senate must ensure that its body represents all of these categories. If it does not, Senate will, unfortunately, prove ineffective in its primary function: to improve the quality of life for all students.

To broaden its representation, Senate should add academic area senators: some amount of senators for the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Though the addition of academic area senators would be a significant change, it would not be an onerous task. One of Senate’s primary powers is to alter its structure to reach the goals it seeks to accomplish. To add academic area senators would require an amendment to the Senate by-

laws, which would take only two meetings once a senator introduces the change as “new business” on the Senate floor.

The amendments to the elections process would also be simple. To make elections relevant but flexible to those who change majors, Senate might allow students to annually select the area in which they will elect their academic area senator. That way, if a first-year student begins in the humanities but becomes a biologist during their second year, their representation could change along with their interests.

Arguments against ‘trying this out’ aren’t useful because trial run initiatives aren’t unprecedented in Senate. When two students felt that Senate needed a committee dedicated to gender- and sexuality-specific issues, Senate approved a pilot year for what is now the Committee on Gender and Sexuality. In this way, student government has an advantage that real government lacks: the ability to test a new strategy or program out, only to repeal it if it fails.

In the three years I was in Senate—and a politics major—my work mostly centered on refining the Senate organizational structure. It is my belief that sound procedures help facilitate a higher probability of progress. Though we have taken progressive steps on such work, Senate must do more. For Senate to be an effective representative body, it must truly be representative.

Adding academic area senators would certainly be a step toward more effective representation and could be accomplished before the semester is out.

Hendrix to sponsor new puppy colony

T

he Hendrix cat colony has delighted students, faculty, and visitors for years—and has been the centerpiece of numerous Odyssey projects and artistic endeavors.

Because furry friends have been such a welcome addition to the campus community, an animal shelter in Conway has decided to partner with Hendrix to sponsor a puppy colony.

Soon, orphaned and stray dogs (who have been properly sterilized and vaccinated) will make Hendrix their new home.

“Hendrix has proved to be so welcoming to animals on their campus,” an employee of a Faulkner County rescue shelter said. “We are up to our eyeballs with puppies in need of homes, and with so many college students nearby who would love to have pets on campus, this program could be the perfect solution.”

Because the needs and behaviors of dogs are quite different from those of cats, the puppies will not be allowed to roam campus freely.

Instead, students who live in on-campus apartments will be eligible to apply to sponsor a dog.

After the necessary paperwork has been completed, the administration will approve the host student to shelter the dog in his or her apartment. Students will be asked to check in their puppy to the Bailey Library center at the beginning of the day, where the dog will be cared for by faculty and students on duty.

“I think this program is a win-win situation,” an administrator said. “These homeless puppies will finally have a place to live and also provide

emotional support to our student body.”

Throughout the day, students will be permitted to interact with the puppies in the library, and participate in their care by “checking them out” for a walk around campus.

“I can’t wait to be able to play with the new dogs,” a freshman from Veasey said. “I haven’t seen my own dog since winter break and I miss him so much. It’ll be nice to be able to go play with them when I’m feeling homesick or need to relax before a big exam.”

Over the summer, the puppies will be placed with students living in apartments for research and internship purposes. They will be incorporated into the natural science, social science, and English lessons of Arkansas Governor’s School.

Starting next fall, professors will be able to rent the puppies to incorporate into lectures.

“Hendrix is all about interdisciplinary subject matter,” a psychology professor said. “Nothing is more interdisciplinary than a puppy. We’ve seen everything from environmentally conscious projects to photo essays with the cats on campus. The puppies will be excellent illustrations of concepts ranging from anatomy to development to literary symbolism—that is, if students can pay attention to the instructors long enough to hear the lesson.”

Hendrix will kick off the program by welcoming three new puppies next September. An application for canine sponsorship will be included in the housing forms for on-campus apartments for the 2016-2017 year.

Ready, Set, Action!

Hendrix Red Brick Film Festival

H

endrix is home to a plethora of unique activities and outlets.

One is the Red Brick Film Festival, a competition that features three-minute films

by Hendrix students. The festival originally began with an anonymous donation of portable video cameras in celebration of the opening of the Student Life and Technology Center (SLTC). The festival has gone on to encourage student creativity and enhance life on campus.

Red Brick Film Festival “lets students know how creative and hard working their fellow Warriors are! It also lets them come together for a night full of food and relaxation in an atmosphere where everyone’s talents are applauded,” senior Ty Spradley said.

Spradley is one of the many talented contestants in this year’s Red Brick Film Festival.

“I’ve always been into photography, and secretly wanted to be on camera as an actor or comedian, so I decided to try combining these things and put myself in a film,” Spradley said.

But by no means is a Red Brick production a one-person show.

“I like to talk ideas over with other funny friends and people with creative visions, then I basically plan a rough outline of things and shoot,” Spradley said when asked about his

individual filmmaking process. “I like leaving room for things to unfold organically within a reasonable framework.”

Those with the best films, as chosen by a panel of judges, can win a variety of prizes. The Best in Show Award wins $500, and the Best Original Film Score wins $50. Whether a film is awarded a prize or not, the night promises to be entertaining and thought-provoking.

Like all film festivals, it is particularly interesting to see what subjects are depicted in the films and in what direction each film will go.

With a community as resourceful and innovative as Hendrix, where contestants get their ideas from will be particularly intriguing and the festival is perfect for depicting the multiple lifetimes of a student’s imagination.

“I like to get my ideas from real-life experiences,” Spradley said. “Some from things I think about when I daydream during class or things I talk about on my KHDX radio show.”

This year’s festival is the Seventh Annual Red Brick Film Festival and will take place Wednesday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in the Worsham Student Performance Hall in the SLTC.

SHIRTTAILS:

T

he Shirttails experience will be quite different for the Hendrix College class of 2020 than it has been for previous classes.

Violations of Shirttails rules regarding decency and appropriateness committed by residence halls last fall have prompted the administration, along with some passionate alumni and donors, to form the Shirttails Reform Committee.

The new committee will be rewriting the rules governing the night. Changes will include dress code, music selection, dance moves and viewer conduct.

“The spirit of Shirttails is to help freshmen get oriented to the Hendrix community in a fun way,” an administrator said. “But over the years, the nature of the night has turned from friendly rivalry to risqué tomfoolery. That doesn’t represent the school well to the state of Arkansas.”

Because the committee feels that recent music selections for the routines have included lyrics too suggestive for a school function, they are creating a list of pre-approved songs from which choreographers must choose. The items on the list are based on their beats and lyrical content.

Two-thirds of the committee must deem the artist and song “appropriate” for it to go on the list.

So far, selections include “Schoolhouse Rock,” “What Does the Fox Say” and Beethoven’s “Sym-

phony No. 5.” Pop music will be permitted only if the Kidz Bop version is used.

In addition to music, dance moves will be getting a facelift. The Martin Push-Up, Hardin Hard-On, Raney Romp, and Veasey Crawl will be outlawed. Not to worry: each dorm will still get to have a signature dance move. Old moves will be replaced with Martin Peace Sign, Hardin High-Five, Raney Reach and Veasey Cool-Down (apparently this involves the Veasey girls fanning themselves to prevent over-heating).

All the dorms may need to cool down by the ends of their routines, as the dress code will mandate turtlenecks and sweatpants. The tradition of dancing in boxers has been discontinued by the committee.

“When I was in school, we just didn’t walk around gyrating in our drawers,” a member of the class of ‘55 and committee member said.

“The only thing that was short was our hair and the only thing shaking was our heads when someone offered us drugs.”

But the dancers aren’t the only ones targeted by the new regulations. Upperclassmen attending the event will also be subject to rules.

Public Safety will peruse the event before, during and after the dances in search of students who appear to be under the influence of illicit

substances. Students who seem to be intoxicated will be subjected to a breath test, and if they do not pass, the student will be dismissed from Shirttails and placed on academic probation.

The final concern the committee wishes to address is the issue of unnecessary rivalries formed so early on in the freshmen’s arrival to campus.

To prevent animosity between the residence halls, Shirttails will no longer be a competition.

Judges will not evaluate the dances in order to score the performance. Rather, judges will ensure that the regulations are strictly followed. If they spot a violation, the music will immediately be stopped and performers will be sent back to their hall and fed cold porridge for dinner.

All in all, the Shirttails Reform Committee is confident that the changes will positively benefit the Hendrix community.

“The reforms made are honestly so minor that I’m sure most folks won’t even notice a difference,” a committee member said. “The fun goes on! Rock chalk!”

Godzilla vs. Hendrix

Prehistoric monster terrorizes Hendrix College

omeone or something is causing worry on the Hendrix campus. Students avoid walking around campus after dark, cars were found smashed in the Front Street parking lot, and the cafeteria staff reported stashes of chicken and beef patties missing from the kitchen. Many claims have been made as to who or what is causing the concern across campus grounds: perhaps a couple of rowdy students or a wild animal.

Or Godzilla.

Recently, a number of individuals on campus reported sightings of the massive prehistoric monster. Being a creature that looks to be a cross between a dinosaur and lizard, not to mention a name that translates as a cross between a gorilla and whale, the visitor seems to many individuals to be a threat. The first sighting was reported to Public Safety last Saturday.

“I was walking back from a party in Huntington when I saw him,” a freshman said. “He was drinking out of the fountain, and when he turned around and saw me, I ran the rest of the way back to Hardin.”

Another student spotted Godzilla on her way

to late night at the cafeteria.

“I just finished practice when I spotted [Godzilla] on top of the SLTC,” the student said.

“Everyone was filing out of the building because of an apparent fire in the kitchen, but I guarantee that monster had something to do with it.”

Public Safety took necessary precautions as more sightings were reported. Pretty soon, the campus dubbed the emails concerning Godzilla “G-Alerts.” The Dean also sent out another email ensuring students that if the monster were ever captured, it would be handled carefully and transferred safely to the nearest ocean. However, some on campus suspect that the monster is a complete hoax.

“Obviously this whole ‘Godzilla’ scare is just a prank that’s gone too far,” one professor said.

“Why would a creature that famous terrorize a liberal arts college in Arkansas?”

Others are looking for hard evidence of the monster.

“Surely we would notice footsteps as deep as the brick pit around campus,” one maintenance worker said.

Tsutsui’s office, then he definitely isn’t on this campus, or at least he didn’t ask for a campus visit,” an admissions counselor said.

There is talk of a potential interest meeting for a committee that would find ways to take care of and protect the rights of Godzilla, but Student Senate did not approve of the group and cited that the student-monster interactions were too dangerous for the student body.

One student also applied for Odyssey funding in order to prove that Godzilla was terrorizing the pecan courts, but the funding committee was unable to determine what category this project would fall under.

As for others on campus, many students seem to be okay with sharing Hendrix with this new visitor.

“As long as I’m not eaten and he doesn’t smash my car, then I’m alright having Godzilla around,” a student said. “Our campus is working towards inclusion of everyone anyway! We should extend this idea to monsters, too.”

Theatre Senior Seminar

he majority of senior capstone projects involve compiling a paper with page numbers well into the double digits, presenting on hours of research, or both. However, the seniors majoring in theatre arts and dance put on an entire production. The majority of the work is done by the senior seminar students, but the theatre faculty also provides support.

“Danny [Grace] is our convener and he is kind of guiding us through the process and helping us sift through all the things that go through into making a show happen because there’s a lot,” senior Valerie Partenheimer, scenic designer and technical director, said. “We also have the ability to talk with other faculty members in the theatre department in order to get their advice on things but it all has to be cleared through Danny.”

The process begins during the spring semester of a theatre major’s junior year. The current juniors and seniors meet together to ask questions and get advice on how to make the seminar process more successful. Afterwards, the juniors begin to plan.

“We start discussing our plans for the future, the work we’re going to do over the summer because we do some research into plays and that kind of thing,” senior Natasha Bray, stage manager and light designer, said. “When we get back senior year fall semester, we work together

to review the plays that we have an option to produce, and then we pick a play.”

for the project, but one in particular – production design – stands out to Partenheimer.

“Your final project is literally every design element of a show,” Partenheimer said. “That was a really good experience because it’s given us all the ability to try out all of these things even if we didn’t have the chance to be a lighting designer for a show or a sound designer for a show before this.”

The courses leading up to the seminar and the seminar itself are meant to prepare the graduating seniors for their potential roles within the theatre industry.

“Learning how to communicate with each other [is important], but also learning how to collaborate is a very important process not only in the theatre but as young adults going into the world,” senior Austin Rodgers, director and house and publicity director, said.

With the entire seminar class working together, the seniors hope to combine their passion and knowledge to produce their best work yet.

“I think that another big rewarding thing for me is just seeing how a play comes to life and then continues to be reinvigorated with life, and you work in it more and more,” Bray said. “If you truly love what you’re doing, then that happens with every script and every day is exciting.”

Snowboarding at Hendrix

Olympic coach heads newest sport

rkansas is not necessarily known as the capital of snowboarding, but Hendrix is looking to change that label with the addition of a snowboarding team to its athletic program.

The new snowboarding coach, who has trained some of the greats - two-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White most notably - believes there is a lot of potential for success in the area.

“The moment I stepped on campus I saw many people fooling around on skateboards, and I immediately saw the beginnings of a great snowboarding dynasty here at Hendrix,” the new head coach said.

Despite Arkansas’ relatively flat geography, not to mention the record warms on the planet this year which have led to even less snow in Arkansas than before, the coach believes this southern landscape still provides a great venue for snowboarding.

“Well, there are at least a few hills here,” the coach said.

Both the administration and the athletic department came up with snowboarding in an effort to channel the teenage angst amongst

students into a more productive outlet.

They cited the exuberant amount of reckless skateboarders on campus as a main motive for implementing this sport. When asked why they did not just add a skateboarding team, one member of the athletic department noted the “ridiculousness” of that idea.

“I don’t see how a skateboarding team will help our cause of reducing reckless skateboarders,” the administration said. “And it’s not like skate parks are that easy to come by.”

Because the city of Conway is off limits, the new snowboarding team will practice about 30 minutes away, in a field “with only a few hills, but nevertheless accommodating for the team,” the coach said.

“The land was also being sold at an extraordinarily cheap price thanks to the former owners being imprisoned for exorbitant drug use, and so we jumped on that opportunity, both figuratively and now literally,” a member of the administration stated.

One main dilemma still being solved is what the competition will look like, considering that no other snowboarding team exists in the South-

ern Athletic Association (SAA). At this point, the coach believes that frequent trips to Colorado and Utah will be the solution, but he did confess his frustration in obtaining funding for such trips. He also expressed hope that other SAA teams will follow Hendrix’s lead and build their own snowboarding programs, but realizes that this will not take shape anytime soon.

So far only one student has signed up for the team, but the coach is still hopeful that he will have a full team for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. When asked if they would consider joining the new snowboarding team, one student suggested that it might be a “good waste of time,” while another confided that she would if actual snow was involved.

Despite the ambiguity of next year, the Hendrix snowboarding team is looking to start off on a high note.

“We will be training hard for whatever comes our way,” the coach said. “Soon, the Hendrix snowboarding team will be known around the country, and one day probably around the globe.

I believe that this is the start of something truly beautiful.”

POWDER PUFF PREP

Football team prepares to host Powder Puff game

n April 9, two teams made up of Hendrix girls will face off in the second annual Powder Puff football game. However, according to its organizers, juniors Matt Ramirez and Jared Lincoln, preparations start long before then.

Holding a Powder Puff game is not only a fun event to hold, but Ramirez believes that it also helps to serve many cultural purposes on campus.

“It’s just an opportunity for the girls to kind of get a taste of what the football players go through,” Ramirez said. “It’s kind of giving them more opportunity to get out there and make it less of a male-dominant thing. People associate football . . . they associate it with men.”

In addition to serving cultural purposes, the event also raises money for charity.

“It’s a charity event for Arkansas Children’s Hospital [ACH],” Lincoln said. “Our main goal is to raise money for pediatric cancer . . . Also, at the same time, we want to create an event for the girls on campus who don’t normally get to do things like that.”

Although the game was also held last year, the second annual edition will be accompanied by

other events.

“This year, we want it to be more inclusive and educational,” Lincoln said. “We have a Project Pericles forum discussing Powder Puff, clearing up some misconceptions and trying to help broaden people’s views about Powder Puff, and help everyone understand what our goal is. For the coaches and participants, we are going to have a seminar where we have somebody from ACH or we have somebody who works in the pediatric cancer field and a special guest speaker who has had pediatric cancer come in and speak to share their experiences.”

Lincoln felt the Project Pericles forum was an important aspect of the event because many people might have misconceptions about Powder Puff based on previous experiences.

“Sometimes people think Powder Puff would have been a place where things could get sexualized,” Lincoln said. “The first year we did the program, one of my good friends, when I asked her to sign up, she was like ‘no, no, I don’t really want to’ and I asked her why . . . She said that in high school, the guys who ran it made it that type of thing. I thought ‘oh, maybe people have had that type of experience before.’ I don’t want

that to happen again.”

The teams will be coached by current members of the football team.

“The ‘coaches’ are our current football players,” Ramirez said. “There’s two head coaches, Jared and myself. And the other players are assistants, so we have a specialty for kicking, and we have both defensive coordinators and offensive coordinators, and we have certain position coaches like lineman, secondary, and all that good stuff. It’s definitely something that’s very organized.”

Every girl who signed up was placed on a team, and they are currently practicing to prepare for the game.

“Everyone who signs up will play,” Ramirez said. “We wanted to make a point that if you sign up, you get to play regardless of talent or your current athletic situation. We want everyone to feel involved. It was really a thing to get the non-athletes on the field just so they can experience what it’s like to be an athlete, and . . . taking away the whole masculinity of football.”

A look into the 2016 outdoor season

A

s the indoor track season comes to a close, the Hendrix track and field team is shifting into high gear for their priority, the outdoor season.

While the current team has a large contingent of freshmen, head coach Patrick MacDonald is confident in the team’s veterans.

“We’ve got a big group of fairly experienced juniors and seniors and so our strengths this year are really going to be in the field event areas,” MacDonald said.

One member of the team that will be integral to success is junior Victoria Amadi, who is a three time All-American and a two-time conference champion in the triple jump. Helping her to score points for the women’s team will be junior Kelly Brice.

“I’m very excited for this outdoor season. A goal of mine is to focus on jumps and keep improving every meet. We also want to keep improving as a team so that we are prepared to compete at conference,” Brice said.

These upperclassmen, among others, are the key to the team’s success. The coaching staff will be leaning on them to set the tone for a successful season both on and off the track.

“We do look to them to make sure that we bring in the freshmen and sophomores into the program and bring them in well - make sure that they know what the expectations are and how we go about practices,” MacDonald said.

This is particularly important to the track team. There are several athletes that compete in other sports during the fall season that also run track. This can APRIL 2016

prove difficult to team unity because track has to grapple with being both an individual and a team sport.

“It’s a really different structure to [other] programs, with the exception of swimming, because they’re team sports. They also have a requirement basically to look at film, break down upcoming opponents, and we don’t have to deal with that,” MacDonald said.

The track coaches try and respect these athletes’ time constraints and help make sure that they are able to lift with their other teams in the offseason, yet still bond and train with the track team.

“We have a lot of different perspectives on the team because we have a lot of different backgrounds,” MacDonald said. “Trying to make a nice cohesive group with that is a challenge but the kids understand that and they do a great job.”

While the team will be leaning on the upperclassmen, the additions of the freshmen class will boost the roster size. Within the SAA conference, it is generally the rule that the team that attends conference with the most bodies is able to take home the conference championship.

This year’s roster is the largest it has been in the past 15 years with only one exception. With so many student-athletes participating, coach MacDonald is hoping for good results at the conference championship.

“With the group we have right now, I think it’s possible that we finish in the top four in both the men’s and women’s sides,” MacDonald said. “And we’ve never done that before.”

Spotlight on The Aonian

Students publish works through student-run literary magazine

uring the end of the spring semester, students start to notice stacks of small magazines appearing around Hendrix.

No, it’s not a fancier version of The Profile: it’s the college’s annual literary magazine, the Aonian.

Many universities and colleges have their own literary magazine, but these publications are usually run by the graduate programs and allow for submissions year-round from outside individuals. Senior Carl Napolitano, the editorin-chief of the Aonian, explained that the Aonian is dedicated to the Hendrix culture.

“The Aonian provides a place for students to have their work be published and read by everyone, which is really great because it’s all studentled,” Napolitano said.

To begin, Napolitano and the Media Committee collaborated to hire an associate editor for the publication. Then, Napolitano selected general staff members who meet weekly during the spring semester to put the literary magazine together. The magazine has four categories students can send submissions to: fiction, nonfiction, poetry and art.

Napolitano leads the general staff in judging and discussing submissions.

“We keep [the submissions] as open as possible,” Napolitano said. “We just want good

work and judge work individually on its merit.

We don’t compare the work that we get to one another.”

Napolitano also explained that the general staff meets with Hendrix faculty members and has practice workshops for how to judge and discuss certain genres of the magazine.

“This year I tried doing something a bit different and created genre editors because there are different categories for the Aonian,” Napolitano said.

These genre editors screen through their designated genre submissions for the general staff workshops. These new positions, as well as the magazine’s visual presentation, are some of Napolitano’s creative choices as the editor-in-chief.

When in charge of last year’s magazine, Napolitano went for a more colorful presentation and drawings of a bug collection as part of the design.

“This year I want to do something similar,” Napolitano said. “I want [the magazine] to be colorful and have a lot of several design element[s] come together on the cover and throughout the magazine.”

Napolitano wants to leave this year’s theme a surprise, but does note that this year’s magazine will hopefully reach out to other artists for design elements. His artistic vision aspires for a

more modern and graphic design. Although there are no overarching themes, the organization of chosen submissions will be grouped together based on similar themes.

“We try to transition through these groupings, and I think that’s a nice thing to do because this allows the readers – the viewers – to draw the connections between the works and also see how they’re having a conversation with each other,” Napolitano said.

Last year’s issue received first place in the literary magazine category at the Southern Literary Festival, a contest that competes with colleges from the Southeast region of the United States. But Napolitano stresses that working with the magazine is reward enough within itself.

“You get to see all these creative minds working and seeing all these things they make that matter to them,” Napolitano said. “And then you get to pick the best of those things and share them with the community and that creates conversation.”

TRUMP Takes Hendrix

ew people were told about it—for good reason. What would we, the students, think if we knew what the Hendrix College Board of Trustees was planning? How could we fathom what could have been? How could the Board have explained it to us…that Donald Trump would be the next president of Hendrix College?

It all started about two years ago when the word first got out that the college would be searching for a new president. What few knew was that one member of the board was pushing for Hendrix to take a more (how do I say this), “financial” approach, a more “business-like” mind to come in and take over the reins.

That’s how Trump’s name got thrown into the hat.

“Who other than America’s greatest businessman, who started out with a small loan of a million dollars from his father, to come into an area where he is an expert – small liberal arts colleges – and be in charge,” one board member said.

I was skeptical.

Truthfully, I only know about Trump’s visit through a matter of chance. The board randomly selected one member of the HEAT staff to provide a campus walk for Trump, and I accepted.

The following portion of this article recalls the trauma of the walk.

Upon first seeing Mr. Trump, I was shocked at how wispy his hair was—honestly one of the most life-like toupees I’ve ever seen. “Greetings, Mr. Trump,” I said.

“Ummm, excuse me, it’s The Donald to you, or Big D, or The Man, anything but Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump was my father, and he never did anything for me, so please, ‘The Donald,’” Trump said.

He was just as I expected.

The tour started at night, which was his idea: he didn’t want the students getting too rowdy if they saw him on campus, storming him for pictures and autographs. We started off by the fountain, and I mentioned how at Hendrix we throw people into the fountain on their birthdays. After the comment, Trump’s face formed into a frown.

“No one’s ever done anything for me on my birthday…especially not my father,” Trump said.

I quickly coughed to break the silence his comment had brought about, and I suggested we keep moving.

I picked up my pace for the rest of the tour, starting to become a bit suspicious and uncomfortable. We were passing by the wall surrounding campus when I heard a scoff behind me.

“You call that a wall!?” Trump said.

“Well, yes, it seems to have all the qualities of a wall,” I said.

“Sure, sure, but, it isn’t tall! I mean, anything could get over that wall. I’ll tell you: if I were to become president, the first thing I’d get done would be to make that wall three…four times as high. Keep out all of those . . .” Trump said.

“STOP!” I said, emphatically raising my voice.

“Nope nope nope nope, just stop. What is your deal with walls?!” I said.

“Well, you should know that walls are the best way to keep things out,” Trump said. “Things like your father. Things like suppressed memories…Right?”

I felt at this point that I might be picking up on something, and decided to cut the walk short.

We didn’t make it to the Village or the SLTC, fearing that more things might come pouring out of his mouth. He left just as he came, cloaked beneath a blonde halo.

I have to say, I’m thankful that Trump’s consideration was revoked after his visit. Trump being the Hendrix president would be much worse than president of the United States, because at least the government doesn’t function properly, and that seems like a nice place for him.

ou want to know about our spring concert, faithful reader of your college’s monthly publication? Want to know how the artist was selected? Read on!

I’ll cut to the chase and upright tell you that this year’s spring concert is Earl Sweatshirt. Thebe Kgositsile, better known as Earl Sweatshirt, is a Chicago-born rapper, but first came onto the scene in Los Angeles when, at the ripe age of 14, he started releasing tracks on his MySpace account.

Fellow Los Angeles rapper Tyler, The Creator, discovered Earl, who at the time was rapping under the name Sly Tendencies. Changing his stage name to Earl Sweatshirt, Earl joined Tyler and the Odd Future crew.

The rest is history.

Earl began to release mix-tapes with Odd Future before moving on to release his debut album “Doris” in 2013. Earl’s style is punctuated and bold; he never blows you away with the speed of his cadence, but his delivery packs a punch.

To find out more about the decision-making process, I sat down with junior Anna Conard, the KHDX concert director, to discuss the spring concert and the details surrounding the event.

The biggest news about the selection process was how the student body helped select the artist. The selection process for the spring concert started right after the end of the fall concert (STRFKR).

“The committee met up a couple of days after the fall concert to discuss how it went,” Conard said. “We received some feedback that while students did enjoy STRFKR and their performance, they didn’t feel as invested in the concert overall.”

Conard explained that the process moving forward was to address this concern and reformat the approach for the spring concert.

“Like we’ve done in years past: we created a

survey,” Conard said. “We selected ten artists for the survey based upon whom the Concert Committee was interested in. They considered our price range, but also tried to achieve a variety as well.”

Conard decided that she wanted to do a survey for spring, but have that survey still come from the committee she assembled at the beginning of the year.

“That survey went out to the students so that they might rank each artist and give us an idea about how much they knew about the artist,” Conard said, stressing that one important aspect of the survey was that the scale on the survey gauged not only how much students liked a band and how much they wanted to see them perform, but also how familiar they were with the artist.

In years past, the surveys have not always been helpful.

“Usually with past surveys, students are very polarized about artists,” Conard said. “Meaning that an artist that gets a whole lot of positive rankings might also be the artist that gets a lot of low rankings. There was no in-between. It’s hard to get someone that everyone likes. But that’s been the past, though.”

Conard explored how, by changing the options of the survey, new preferences and dates could be tested.

“You could have a mid-range this way,” Conard said. “One of the options was ‘I don’t know this artist very well, so I might go see this show.’ This offered a duality: not just preference, but also familiarity and knowledge.”

In thinking about how to generate a larger turnout for the concert, as well as ensuring the greatest amount of people pleased, Conard turned towards familiarity and the likelihood of students to go to the concert. The results of the survey would at least show that the selected artist would be well known, and might lead to ISSUU.COM/THEHENDRIXCOLLEGEPROFILE

more engagement with the artist selected for the spring concert.

“This year the results were totally different,” Conard said. “People unanimously liked a couple of artists on the survey. Earl Sweatshirt was the second highest ranked artist overall, with hardly any negative feedback.”

There is something extra special about this year’s concert. In addition to the talents of Earl Sweatshirt, the Concert Committee decided to book an opener for the show: Little Rock rapper Goon Des Garçons.

“We want people to get more bang for their buck: to have a fuller concert experience, to have a gradual building of energy and excitement,” Conard said, explaining why the committee added an opening act. “Not a ‘bang-bang,’ it’s over before you know it. An opener also stretches out the show, allowing it to go longer into the night.”

Moreover, Conard is excited for what this means for the local music scene, as well as for Goon himself.

“I’m really excited to support someone local, someone who is just starting to get press,” Conard said. “His manager told us the other day that two big record executives are coming to the show to see him perform. It’s honestly a pretty big deal for him to [be] playing alongside such a big name like Earl. We’re hoping this can be a stepping-stone in his career and a chance to introduce the student body to some local music.”

Why should people come out?

“We’re excited to offer this show for free, unlike other spring concerts,” Conard said. “We’re trying to open things up for students, and provide not just a good show, but also a good night.”
