The community has been so supportive of the SoFi Hawai’i Bowl, and we are pleased to give something back to the community. Throughout the year, the Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation has raised funds for charities. Entering the 2018 campaign, the University of Hawai‘i football team was picked to finish fifth in the West Division of the Mountain West while many experts predicted the Rainbow Warriors would win little more than three games. Those expectations quickly subsided after the first month of the season.
early season success had players and fans alike excited about the return of the Run-N-Shoot offense under third-year head coach Nick Rolovich. In week zero, UH dominated conference foe Colorado State on the road for a 43-34 victory. The next two weeks fed into the excitement as UH went 3-0 with wins over Navy and Rice. Sophomore quarterback Cole McDonald and junior wide receiver John Ursua put up dizzying numbers to fuel the Rainbow Warriors. All of the
UH suffered its first setback of the season on the road at Army on Sept. 15 but bounced back over the next two weeks with wins over visiting Duquesne, followed by a five-overtime classic at San Jose State. The longest game in program history wouldn’t be the last time the Warriors ventured into overtime in 2018. The midway point of the season saw the team forced to start freshman quarterback Chevan Cordeiro due to an injury to McDonald. The Honolulu native answered the call, helping lead UH to a comeback victory over Wyoming. Cordeiro found junior wide receiver JoJo Ward in the back of the end zone with just over a minute left in regulation for the 17-13 win, giving UH possession of the Paniolo Trophy and a solid 6-1 overall record.
The next month, however, proved difficult. Hawai‘i dropped four straight against BYU, Nevada, Fresno State, and nationally ranked Utah State. The stretch took UH out of the picture for a MW title but still hopeful of a winning record and bowl game berth. Those hopes were realized when Cordeiro flashed his brilliance again during the team’s home finale against UNLV. With UH trailing, 28-13, Corderio entered the game in the fourth quarter and tossed three touchdowns to complete a 35-28 comeback and help UH claim the Island Showdown Trophy and bowl eligibility. Despite seven wins on its resume, UH entered the final game of the season at San Diego State uncertain of their postseason future. All doubts were cast away as McDonald saved his best for last, throwing for a career-high 452 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another
in a 31-30 overtime triumph of the Aztecs. During the season, McDonald earned spots on the Maxwell Award and Manning Award watch lists and was also honorable-mention all-MW. The La Mirada, Calif., native is fifth nationally in both passing yards (3,790) and passing yards per game (315.8) and is No. 7 in passing touchdowns (35). Ursua, meanwhile, wrapped up the regular season as the nation’s leader in touchdown receptions (16) and claims the No. 5 spot nationally in both receiving yards (1,342) and receiving yards per game (103.3). He was named first-team all-MW and was an Associated Press and USA Today Mid-Season All-American. With eight wins this season, UH ranks fifth nationally for biggest turnaround and has its most wins since 2010. In addition, the Warriors posted their first winning record in Mountain West play (53) and the team’s runner-up finish is tied for the team’s highest-ever MW finish.

NICK ROLOVICH: LIVE ALOHA, PLAY WARRIOR In just three seasons as head coach, former Warrior quarterback Nick Rolovich has reinvigorated the University of Hawai‘i football program and returned it back to national relevancy both on the field and in the football community. The 2018 SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl marks the second bowl appearance for the Rainbow Warriors under Rolovich’s tutelage, while the eight victories entering the game are the most for UH since a 10-win season in 2010 and the fifth-largest turnaround among FBS schools. UH’s success this season is largely due to its offense. Rolovich re-installed the Run and Shoot that made Hawai‘i famous in the 2000s and behind quarterback Cole McDonald and receiver John Ursua, the Warriors put up video-game numbers in jumping out to a 6-1 start. Rolovich’s “Live Aloha, Play Warrior” and “Pride Rock” slogans, which echoed throughout his introductory press conference, were the foundation of his inaugural season of 2016 that saw the Warriors reach a bowl game for the first time in six years. In addition, his witty theatrics helped promote the program off the field through numerous ESPN SportsCenter Top Plays and viral videos across social media.
In that first coaching stint at UH from 2008-11, Rolovich directed one of the top passing offenses in the nation. For the latter three years of his time with the Warriors, he had play-calling duties, while UH threw for 13,915 yards—an average of 347.9 yards per game— and 96 touchdowns. That included the 2010 season in which Hawai’i led the nation in passing offense (394.3 ypg) and finished sixth in total offense (500.6 ypg). Rolovich has been apart of seven bowls in 11 seasons coaching at the FBS level. He also has coached four quarterbacks who went on to play professionally: UH’s Moniz (CFL – Hamilton Tiger-Cats) and Shane Austin (AFL – Philadelphia Soul); Nevada’s Fajardo (CFL – BC Lions); and City College of San Francisco’s Jeremiah Masoli (CFL – Hamilton Tiger-Cats). Rolovich was a two-year letterwinner at quarterback for Hawai‘i from 2000-01, starting the bulk of the 2001 season and leading the team to an 8-1 record as a starter. He passed for 4,176 career yards and 40 touchdowns and still holds six school passing records. The highlight of his career was perhaps one of the best performances in college football history. Rolovich led the Warriors to an upset over previously unbeaten and No. 9 BYU in the 2001 season finale, 72-45, with 543 yards and eight touchdowns. As a senior that season, he ranked 10th nationally in passing efficiency with a 150.5 rating and broke 19 school passing and eight total offense records.
Most importantly, the Warriors won on the field in Rolovich’s first season to help rejuvenate the fan base, finishing with seven wins capped by a 52-35 victory over Middle Tennessee in the 2016 Hawai‘i Bowl. After a 3-9 mark in his second year, Rolovich has orchestrated a five-win improvement in 2018 including consecutive wins to close out regular season and to clinch the program’s eighth Hawai‘i Bowl appearance. He became the 23rd head coach for the Rainbow Warrior program when he was hired in December 2015 following a four-year stint as Nevada’s offensive coordinator. Rolovich, the fifth-youngest head coach in NCAA Division I FBS at the age of 37 at the time of his hire, is still regarded as one of the top offensive minds in the country. Under Rolovich’s watch at Nevada, Wolf Pack quarterback Cody Fajardo made history in 2014, reaching 9,000 yards passing and 3,000 yards rushing in a career—becoming only the second player in NCAA history to accomplish the feat, joining Colin Kaepernick. In addition, Rolovich tutored Bryant Moniz to 10,169 career passing yards in his tenure as Hawai‘i’s offensive coordinator.
He went on to play professionally for the Rhein Fire (NFL Europe) as well as in the Arena Football League for the San Jose SaberCats, Arizona Rattlers, Chicago Rush and Las Vegas Gladiators. The Novato, Calif., native earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from UH (2004) and a master’s in human performance and sport from New Mexico Highlands (2007). Rolovich and his wife, Analea, have three sons, Daniel, William and Patrick, and a daughter, Alana.

The Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation was formed to provide support to Hawai‘i-based non-profit organizations. Since its inception in 2002, the Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation has awarded more than one million dollars in cash to local charities and millions of dollars in tickets to military personnel, first-responders and Hawai‘i non-profits. In 2018, the SoFi Hawai’i Bowl, through the Hawai’i Bowl Foundation and ESPN Events, will grant over $115,000 to deserving organizations. Louisiana Tech head coach Skip Holtz knew the start of the 2018 campaign would be tough. With three of the Bulldogs’ first four games on the road, including at No. 6 LSU and at Conference USA preseason favorite North Texas, Holtz and Co. had their work cut out for them.
Following the win over Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech’s season hit a snag as the Bulldogs lost three of their final four games, including two straight against Southern Miss and WKU to close out the regular season with a 7-5 overall record and 5-3 mark in C-USA.
But any preseason concerns were washed away following a 3-1 start to the season with wins at South Alabama, at home versus Southern and a two-point road win at North Texas to start C-USA play.
Although it was a disappointing ending to the 12-game schedule, the 2018 season included plenty of accolades and achievements to brag about for the Bulldogs. Defensive end Jaylon Ferguson came back to LA Tech for his senior season, and in doing so, solidified his ranking as one of the nation’s top defenders and a future first round draft pick.
The only slip up in the first four weeks came at Death Valley, where the Bulldogs held their own against the No. 6-ranked team in the nation in the LSU Tigers. Still, confidence was still high entering LA Tech’s Oct. 6 home matchup against the UAB Blazers, but an uncharacteristic performance by the Bulldogs coupled with a flawless defensive effort by UAB turned into a 28-7 loss for LA Tech.
With one game left to play in his decorated career, Ferguson has already broken both the Louisiana Tech and C-USA records for career sacks, while he is 1.5 sacks shy of tying the all-time NCAA record for career sacks held by Terrell Suggs (44). Ferguson is having a season for the record books as he leads the nation with 15.0 sacks in 2018, while ranking second nationally with 23.5 tackles for loss.
Eager to get the bad taste out of their mouths, the Bulldogs rallied together and strung together a three-game winning streak that included victories over UTSA (W, 31-3), UTEP (W, 31-24) and Florida Atlantic (W, 21-13) with two of those wins coming on the road.
On Nov. 28, the Bulldogs were awarded an opportunity to end the 2018 season on a high note after it was announced Louisiana Tech would travel to Honolulu, Hawai‘i to compete against the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors in the SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl on Dec. 22.
The 2018 SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl will mark Louisiana Tech’s fifth straight bowl berth, which makes the Bulldogs the only team in C-USA to achieve such a feat. LA Tech heads into its final game of the season as one of only four teams in the nation to win four straight bowl games, along with Georgia, Utah and Wisconsin.

SKIP HOLTZ: A WINNING TRADITION Skip Holtz is currently in his sixth season as the head coach at Louisiana Tech after being introduced as the 33rd head football coach of the Bulldogs during a press conference on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012. The 2018 season saw LA Tech attain bowl eligibility for a fifth straight season, a feat that no other Conference USA team has achieved over the last five seasons. LA Tech posted a 7-5 record under Holtz, as the Bulldogs also became the only conference team to win seven or more games in the last five years. Holtz and the Bulldogs closed out the 2017 season on a threegame winning streak to end the campaign with a 7-6 record. Holtz guided Tech to a 51-10 victory over SMU in the DXL Frisco Bowl as the Bulldogs joined Georgia, Utah and Wisconsin as one of only four schools in the nation (and the only non-Power 5 program) to win bowl games in the last four seasons. In 2016, Holtz earned C-USA Coach of the Year honors after Louisiana Tech finished the season with a 9-5 record, a C-USA West Division title and a bowl victory over No. 25 Navy in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl. It marked the first time in school history Tech posted three consecutive 9-win seasons and three straight bowl appearances and victories. In 2015, Holtz led the Bulldogs to an 8-4 overall record and 6-2 mark in C-USA, while Tech appeared in the team’s second straight bowl game and defeated Arkansas State in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. In his second season at the helm in 2014, Holtz enjoyed a five-win improvement from his inaugural campaign after leading Tech to a 9-5 record and a C-USA West Division title in the team’s second year in the league. Holtz and the Bulldogs closed the season with a 35-18 win over Illinois in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.
Holtz spent the previous three seasons as the head coach at South Florida and has also served as the head coach at Connecticut and East Carolina where he won back-to-back C-USA titles in 2008-09. Holtz spent time as an assistant at South Carolina, Notre Dame, Florida State and Colorado State. Holtz is set to appear in the 20th postseason game of his career, including 12 as a head coach and eight as an assistant. Of the 12 games as head coach, 10 occurred in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Born March 12, 1964, in Willimantic, Connecticut, Louis “Skip” Holtz was a quarterback at Fayetteville High School while his father was the head coach at the University of Arkansas. He attended Holy Cross Junior College in South Bend, Indiana, for two years before transferring to Notre Dame in 1984. Holtz earned his bachelor’s degree in business management in 1986 and lettered for the Irish that same year. Skip and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of three children: Louis Leo (Trey) Holtz III, Chad Fitzgerald Holtz and Hailey Elizabeth Holtz.
