On behalf of the Hawai‘i Bowl Staff, our Executive Committee, our Corporate Sponsors and Volunteers, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Aloha Stadium and the sixteenth annual Hawai‘i Bowl.

Congratulations to two outstanding teams, the Fresno State Bulldogs and the University of Houston Cougars on their selection to play in the postseason. And, we welcome both schools and their supporters to Hawai‘i. We think you’ll find that there is no better December destination than Honolulu, Hawai’i!

Through the year-round efforts and support of our fans and the local community, the Hawai‘i Bowl has become a holiday tradition reaching millions of ESPN viewers across the country and embodying the MADE IN HAWAI‘I, PLAYED IN HAWAI‘I spirit.

The community has been so supportive of the Hawai’i Bowl, and we are pleased to give something back to the community. Throughout the year, the Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation has raised funds for charities. Since the bowl’s inception, we have had the privilege to grant more than a million dollars, primarily to Hawai‘i-based charities. This year, we are pleased to grant more than $110,000 to various organizations during our in-game ceremony.

Each year, the bowl selects teams from the Mountain West and The American to compete for title of Hawai‘i Bowl Champion. Congratulations to the players of the Fresno State Bulldogs and the Houston Cougars, meeting on the field for the first time, for their success this past year that brought them to play post-season football in our islands. It reflects their hard work and dedication to the game throughout the regular season.

MISS HAWAI‘I BOWL BAILEY LUM Meet Miss Hawai‘i Bowl 2017, Bailey Jada Hi‘ilani Lum. Born and raised in Kāne‘ohe town, Bailey later moved to the beautiful island of Kaua’i, where she currently lives.

A proud alumna of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama Campus, she recently graduated with honors with the class of 2017.

Some of her favorite island activities are relaxing with family at the Kāne‘ohe Sandbar, eating an acai bowl from Kahuku Farms Cafe and watching the sunset on the west side.

Bailey grew up practicing the martial art of Tae Kwon Do and earned her black belt at age ten. Today, she volunteers at a small Tae Kwon Do school in Līhue, instructing keiki ages three and up, helping them become more confident and self-aware.

Currently, she is studying for her private pilot license exam and working full time at the original Duke’s Canoe Club on Kalapakī Beach.

She will soon be embarking upon her journey to become a commercial pilot at ATP Flight School in Long Beach, CA.

FRESNO STATE Fresno State continues to lead the way in Central California through innovation and by inspiring students to pursue their dreams and to become future leaders. The university’s mission is to boldly educate and empower students for success. As an economic driver within the region, more than 80 percent of Fresno State graduates stay and work in the Central Valley.

Student-athletes wear the “Green V” on their uniforms and helmets to show Fresno State’s pride in representing the hard-working leaders and innovators of the Central Valley. As academics and athletics rise together at Fresno State, student-athletes are setting records in the classroom. This past academic year, 120 student-athletes earned GPAs of 3.5 or higher, while 41 earned a perfect 4.0.

The story of the university dates back to 1911, when the doors of Fresno State Normal School opened to 150 hopeful future teachers. Now, the student population is nearing 25,000 – and the university continues to honor its historical roots by preparing more K-12 school teachers than any other public university in California. With majors in 64 bachelor’s, 44 master’s and three doctoral subject areas, Fresno State has come a long way from its humble beginnings.

Affiliation Fresno State is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University, one of the largest systems of higher education in the world.

The growth of the university mirrors the growth of the region as Fresno has blossomed from a city with a population of about 15,000 in the early 1900s into California’s fifth largest city with approximately 520,000 residents today.

During that time, alumni and community members rallied around the Fresno State athletics program that is often referred to as the “porchlight” to the university – introducing many in the community to all that Fresno State has to offer. Nestled in the heart of the Central Valley – the nation’s most productive agricultural region – Fresno State is known for its 1,000acre University Agricultural Laboratory and water research. In 1997, Fresno State became the first university in the nation to have a commercially bonded winery on campus.

Each year, academics at Fresno State steadily garners more attention with the release of national rankings. Washington Monthly, a DC-based magazine known for its annual rankings of American colleges and universities, placed Fresno State number 17 on its list of the top national universities based on social mobility, research and service. Fresno State was selected alongside six Ivy League institutions, six University of California campuses and some of the top private universities in the country.

“Learning by serving” is at the core of what Fresno State represents.

Community service is a hallmark at Fresno State, where students, faculty and staff have provided more than 10 million hours of service in the past 10 years, touching thousands along the way. The result is about $36.4 million of economic impact each year.

Fresno State has been recognized as an engine of social mobility due to its success in educating diverse students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college.

also just the third time during the last 25 years that the Bulldogs have gone through a conference season with just one loss. On November 26, Fresno State entered the polls for the first time 2013, checking in at number 25 in the Associated Press, and two days later at number 25 in the College Football Playoff – a first for the Bulldogs.

Before the 2017 season began, Fresno State had doubters. Coming off of a 1-11 season in 2016, the Bulldogs were picked to finish sixth in the West Division in the Mountain West preseason poll.

But preseason is the preseason for a reason.

Coming back to his alma mater, head coach Jeff Tedford made sure that this year was about 2017, not about what happened in the past. The 2017 Mountain West Coach of the Year and finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award retooled and reprogramed Fresno State into a team that produced the best single-season turnaround in 2017 (9-4), and one of the best in NCAA history, despite playing at then number one Alabama and then number six Washington in back-to-back weeks in September.

This year’s turnaround has come in large part due to its revamped defense under Orlondo Steinauer. One of the top defensive minds from the Canadian Football League, Steinauer forged together a group of starters from 2016, converted linebackers to defensive ends and blended them with young, hungry linebackers and defensive backs which included a Mountain West firstteam selection in sophomore middle linebacker Jeffrey Allison. The unit has been stout, allowing nearly two touchdowns less per game than a season ago at just 17.2 points per game, which ranks ninth in the FBS, and the lowest for the ‘Dogs since 1988. An emphasis on slowing down opponents’ running games, the Bulldogs’ run defense went from number 123 (247.4 ypg) in 2016 to number 16 (116.6 ypg) in 2017.

the year, ranking fifth in the country in sacks allowed (9). The beneficiary has been junior Marcus McMaryion. The Dinuba native returned home to Valley during fall camp after transferring from Oregon State following his graduation.

Joining the team on August 12, McMaryion made his first start for the Bulldogs on September 30 and led the ‘Dogs to an 8-2 record as the starter. In total, the local product accounted for 2,636 yards of offense and 16 touchdowns.

With nearly all of its starters back on offense, the unit was built on not allowing negative plays behind its veteran offensive line. With an O-line that ranks third in tackles for loss allowed (40), the Bulldogs’ young core of running backs in sophomore Josh Hokit and freshmen Jordan Mims and Ronnie Rivers have combined for 1,601 of the 2,039 yards the Bulldogs gained on the ground. The O-line has also kept its quarterbacks upright throughout

The Bulldogs qualified for their 28th all-time bowl appearance after earning their sixth win of the 2017 season on November 4 against BYU. On December 3, after falling in the Mountain West Championship game to Boise State the day before, Fresno State accepted its third invitation to the Hawai’i Bowl since 2012.

JEFF TEDFORD: A BULLDOG COMES HOME Jeff Tedford was named the 19th head football coach in Fresno State history on November 10, 2016 and assumed the role of acting head coach on November 27, following the conclusion of the 2016 season.

Tedford held the same position at Oregon (1998-2001) before he became the head coach at Cal. He was named the Pac-10 coach of the year twice, led the Golden Bears to a school record seven consecutive bowl games and to a conference title in 2006.

Tedford, a former Bulldog quarterback and Fresno State assistant coach, returned to the Valley after holding the position of offensive consultant for the Washington Huskies – a 2016 College Football Playoff team.

Following Tedford’s stint at Cal, he moved on to the NFL in 2014 as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator. The stop did not last long due to health issues during the preseason that evolved into an indefinite leave of absence which resulted in the two sides mutually agreeing to part ways.

Tedford, who is a proven winner on the West Coast, came to the Valley with 11 years of head coaching experience at the Division I level – having led the California Golden Bears to 82 wins from 2002 to 2012. He left as the school’s all-time winningest coach.

Tedford’s ties to the Valley and Fresno State run deep. He played quarterback at Fresno State in 1981-82 under Jim Sweeney and coached at Fresno State under Sweeney from 1987-88 and 1992-96, and under a then-first-year head coach Pat Hill in 1997.

Tedford’s coaching career started at Fresno State, volunteering as an assistant for the 1987-88 seasons, from there he picked up his first full-time position as an assistant for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League – a familiar league in which he played quarterback for six seasons after his collegiate career at Fresno State.

He returned to Fresno State in 1992 as the quarterbacks coach and served as the offensive coordinator for the Bulldogs over the ensuing five seasons.

Tedford made his return to the CFL in 2015 as he was named the head coach of the B.C. Lions. At the conclusion of the season, Tedford elected to exercise an option in his contract to resign and pursue opportunities in college football.

Tedford made his return to college football as an offensive consultant for the Washington Huskies under head coach Chris Peterson in 2016. A relationship rekindled after their time together as assistants at Oregon under then-head coach Mike Bellotti. Washington’s staff also included associate head coach Bob Gregory, who served as Tedford’s defensive coordinator at Cal for eight seasons.

Tedford graduated from Warren High School in Downey and attended Cerritos Junior College for two seasons before becoming the Bulldogs’ quarterback in 1981.

He and his wife Donna have two children, Taylor and Quinn.

The Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation was formed to provide support to Hawai‘i-based non-profit organizations.

Since its inception in 2002, the Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation has awarded more than one million dollars in cash to local charities and millions of dollars in tickets to military personnel, first-responders and Hawai‘i non-profits.

The 2017 season saw a new beginning for the #HTownTakeover as Major Applewhite, who was named the University of Houston’s 14th Head Coach on Dec. 9, 2016, entered his first year at the helm of the Cougars.

Applewhite’s first season started with adversity as Houston was hit one of the nation’s most devastating natural disasters in Hurricane Harvey.

Following a team evacuation to Austin and a cancellation of the season-opener at UTSA, the Cougars opened their season with a 19-16, grind-it-out victory at Arizona on September 9.

In its home opener on September 16, Houston recorded 484 yards of total offense in a 38-3 rout of Rice for the Bayou Bucket on September 16 at TDECU Stadium.

Quarterback Kyle Allen set the Houston

Houston defeated SMU, 35-22, on October 7. Running back Duke Catalon rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns, while Postma accounted for three scores, including a touchdown reception off a reverse from quarterback D’Eriq King. The Mustangs entered the game ranked third in the nation in scoring offense at 48.2 points per game and was one of two schools to score 36-plus points in every game played prior to the matchup.

Trophies, Oliver was named The American’s Defensive Player of the Year to lead five Houston All-Conference selections. Oliver and linebacker D’Juan Hines received first-team honors, while defensive back Khalil Williams garnered second-team laurels. Receiver Steven Dunbar and safety Terrell Williams each earned honorable mention.

Making his first career start at quarterback, King accounted for four touchdowns, with three passing and one rushing, in a 52-27 win over ECU on Nov. 4 to make the Cougars bowl eligible for a fifth straight season.

Following a 20-17 loss at Tulane, Houston closed out the regular season with a 24-14 win over Navy on November 24.

Defensive tackle Ed Oliver finished with a career-high 14 tackles while also tying career highs with 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

The 2017 senior class enters the Hawai‘i Bowl one win away from tying the Houston program record of 38 wins and would become the first senior class in Houston history with three bowl wins.

MAJOR APPLEWHITE: PREVAILING OVER ADVERSITY Major Applewhite was named head coach at Houston on December 9, 2016 after serving two seasons as the program’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

In his first season at Houston, Applewhite led an offense that was one of three nationally to average over 235 yards per game in both rushing (235.8 yards per game) and passing (248.4 yards per game).

Applewhite, who has 14 years of coaching experience including seven as an offensive coordinator, has coached in 12 bowl games, four of which have been the New Year’s Six variety including the 2010 BCS National Championship.

The explosive Cougar attack ranked 10th nationally in scoring offense with an average of 40.4 points per game, an improvement of 47 spots from 2014 when it finished the year 57th nationally with an average of 29.8 points per game.

Applewhite’s first season as a head coach started off with adversity as Houston was hit with one of the nation’s most devastating natural disasters in Hurricane Harvey. Following a team evacuation to Austin concluded and a cancellation of the season-opener at UTSA, Applewhite rallied his team to a seven-win season and a program-record fifth straight bowl game appearance, finishing second in The American West.

Houston was led by the Earl Campbell Award winner - Greg Ward Jr., who was one of only two players nationally to rush for over 1,000 yards and throw for over 1,400 yards, finishing the regular season with 1,108 rushing yards and 2,828 passing yards.

The junior broke 14 Houston or The American records in 2015 while tying three others.

Despite facing five of the nation’s top-20 scoring offenses, Houston finished the year second in The American in scoring defense while sophomore defensive tackle Ed Oliver won the Outland Trophy and was a finalist for the Nagurski Trophy.

Over the 2015-16 season, Applewhite’s explosive offenses have helped the Houston program to the best two-year win total in program history with the 22 wins over 2015-16 ranking fourth nationally behind only Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. Houston started out 5-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.

His offense eclipsed the 500-yard mark in 11 games and the 600-yard mark in five games over 2015-16. Scoring wise, Houston eclipsed the 40-point mark 12 times and the 50-point mark five times.

Applewhite arrived in Houston after seven years at Texas, his final four years as co-offensive coordinator after serving as assistant head coach his first three seasons.

Applewhite returned to his alma mater after spending 2007 as offensive coordinator at Alabama, where he was the youngest coordinator on the FBS level. Prior to Alabama, Applewhite spent a season as offensive coordinator at Rice Before his stint at Rice, Applewhite served as Syracuse’s quarterbacks coach in 2005. Applewhite’s coaching career began where he started, at Texas, when he served as a graduate assistant coach and worked with the offensive line for two seasons (2003-04).
