In the brief, the Department argued that a district court judge failed to apply strict scrutiny in determining whether Harvard’s use of race in its admissions process was “narrowly tailored to a compelling interest.” In other news, Athletics Director Robert L. Scalise said he does not support calls to implement separate academic support structures for student-athletes. in The Rea l World

Columbia Columbia University researchers recently received a $2.1 million grant to research viable drugs that could combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, according to the Columbia Spectator. The Jack Ma Foundation — a nonprofit owned by Jack Ma, China’s richest man — donated the grant as the virus is spreading more rapidly throughout China. The donation occurred just days after the Education Department launched an investigation into Harvard for allegedly failing to report foreign donations.

Brown On Tuesday, over 100 Brown University graduate students marched in a protest led by the Stand Up for Graduate Students Union negotiating team, the Brown Daily Herald reported. The march follows almost one year of negotiation between the union and Brown over a contract, and during the march, participants repeatedly threatened striking. SUGSE has been openly negotiating graduate student concerns with Brown since its inception in 2014, but since they’ve begun negotiating a formal contract last year, the two sides have failed to come to “final agreements.” SUGSE leaders said Tuesday that they are currently planning more marches and picket lines as negotiations continue.

uPENN The University of Pennsylvania athletics department and men’s basketball team received sanctions from the NCAA yesterday following a bribery scandal surrounding the former men’s basketball team coach, Jerome Allen, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian. The basketball team’s participation in the regular season will not be restricted, but the team does face a three-week ban on recruiting. The athletics department faces a $5,000 fine and two years on probation. This follows after Allen was implicated in a July 2018 scandal where it was revealed Allen had accepted money from businessman Phillip Esformes to secure his son’s acceptance as a basketball team.
