Monroe College student diagnosed with Tuberculosis The Westchester County Health Department has learned that a Monroe College student at the New Rochelle campus was diagnosed with active Tuberculosis. The student, who is not from Westchester, is being treated, is not on campus, and is expected to make a full recovery. The county Health Department, working closely with Monroe College, has identified and notified those students and faculty who were exposed, to recommend and offer free evaluation and testing, according

to Caren Halbfinger, director of public affairs for the county Health Department. Tuberculosis is an infection that usually causes cough and fever. It spreads through the air when a person with active Tuberculosis coughs or sneezes. A long period of close contact with an infected person is usually required for tuberculosis to be transmitted. In 2018, Westchester County had the second highest case rate of residents with Tuberculosis outside of New York City, ac-

cording to the state Department of Health. Last year, cases of active Tuberculosis were identified in Westchester residents who ranged in age from 8 to 81 years old. Tuberculosis also touched the lives of hundreds of Westchester residents who were exposed to someone with the infectious disease at work, school or home, in a social setting or a healthcare facility. The county Department of Health informed them about their exposure, offered them screening to determine whether

they had the disease, and provided follow-up treatment to those who needed it. People with Tuberculosis disease can be treated and cured if they seek medical help. Tuberculosis evaluation and treatment are available at the county Health Department clinics in White Plains and Yonkers, as well as at neighborhood health centers and family care centers throughout County. To inquire about evaluation or treatment, please call 995-5800. (Submitted)

Harrison police broke up a drag race along Westchester Avenue on Friday, April 5, arrested six drivers and seizing their vehicles. The drivers, five men and a woman, are facing multiple criminal and traffic-related charges. The incident unfolded about 1 a.m., when Harrison Police Officer Rocky Consigliere observed 60 to 80 vehicles and multiple spectators gathered in the vicinity of the Westchester Avenue/ Butcher Bridge. He then observed two vehicles engaged in a speed contest heading eastbound on Westchester Avenue and saw other vehicles staging for subsequent races. After calling for backup, Consigliere intervened and attempted to stop several vehicles. The drivers fled but after a short pursuit from the eastbound side of Westchester Avenue to the westbound side, the officer was able to safely and strategically box the fleeing vehicles in and bring them to a stop at the southbound entrance ramp to the Hutchinson River Parkway. “These events are fueled by social media as well as movies and reality shows like ‘Fast & Furious’ and ‘Street Outlaws,’” Chief Joseph Yasinski said. “They threaten the safety of not only those behind the wheel but

the public as a whole. I commend officer Consigliere for his diligence while on patrol and for ending this dangerous activity without accident or injury to anyone.” The persons arrested and the vehicles impounded are: Justin T. Rhodes, 22, of Pomona, New York driving a 2015 Ford Mustang; Justin Gonzalez, 22, of the Bronx, New York, driving a 2020 Mercedes Benz; Christian Contreras, 22, of Norwalk, Connecticut, driving a 2002 Lexus; Joseph Bartlett, 20, of Riverside, Connecticut, driving a 2007 Audi; Jerrymyah Alexis, 20, of Greenwich, Connecticut, driving a 1998 BMW; Despina Tsartsabalidis, 28, of Stamford, Connecticut, driving a 2000 Pontiac Trans Am. All were charged with reckless endangerment in the second degree, reckless driving and unlawful speed contest, misdemeanors; and speed not reasonable and failure to comply, violations. All drivers’ vehicles were impounded and towed from the scene. The suspects were released on $500 bail each and are scheduled to appear in Harrison Town Court on April 30. (Submitted)
