unveil Rye’sAbove Public Art Project

The Rye’sAbove Public Art Project includes about 45 butterfly sculptures, with the larger ones on display at the Rye Village Green until Sept. 19, when the program will culminate at an event at Wainwright House and the auction will close. Monies raised from the auction and sponsorship will be used by the Rye Rotary and Rye Arts Center for programming and scholarships. Support for this event was provided by major sponsors, including The Osborn, White Plains Hospital, Greenwich Hos -

pital, Rye Brook Service Center and Hightower Westchester. The unveiling on May 15 was moved inside due to the rain but it did not dampen the spirit of about 50 attendees of all ages. The program featured comments from Rye Mayor Josh Cohn and Westchester County Executive George Latimer, who both addressed the crowd and spoke about the importance of volunteer projects such as this one, which beautify and unify the Rye community and beyond. Three of the participating artists also spoke about how

public art projects showcase the work of local artists and give them a platform to express themselves. This program is especially near and dear to them because the proceeds help fund art programs at the Rye Arts Center and scholarships through the Rye Rotary. Many of the small butterflies will be on display at stores and businesses along Purchase Street through the summer. The online auction is now open and bids are being accepted at: https://givebutter.com/c/ryesabove/auction

friends. I’m excited to welcome everyone back to the beaches, and to the pools in June, to experience everything Westchester County Parks has to offer.” Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, Kathy O’Connor said, “Summer is peak-season for the Westchester County Parks Department with pools and beaches open, and a variety of activities and programs available County-wide. I’m looking forward to sharing another season full of fun events with our park-goers.”

County launches multilingual brochure for AAPI Heritage Month

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is announcing a new initiative aimed at promoting inclusivity and accessibility for the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. In response to the findings of the Westchester County Asian American Advisory Board’s Surviving and Thriving AAAB Needs Assessment, the county is announcing the creation of an easy-to-use informational brochure tailored for Chinese, Japanese and Korean-speaking populations.

Latimer said: “As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we take this important step towards ensuring that our services are accessible to all residents, regardless of language or cultural background. This brochure represents our dedication to fostering an inclusive community.”

Conducted by the Asian American Advisory Board in 2022, the survey examined inclusivity, language, transportation and education in Westchester, and revealed crucial insights into the challenges faced by the AAPI com-

munity in the county. Among the prominent findings were the necessity for improved language access and a desire for better communication regarding county services.

In line with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Westchester County is now introducing a brochure focusing on key service departments:

1. Westchester County Department of Health: Providing comprehensive information on health services, wellness programs, and vaccination clinics accessible to the Chinese, Japanese and Korean-speaking communities.

2. Westchester County Department of Social Services: Offering guidance on social assistance programs, eligibility criteria, and support services tailored to the cultural and linguistic needs of the AAPI population.

3. Westchester County Department of Emergency Services: Ensuring vital emergency information, disaster preparedness tips, and contact details are easily accessible to Chinese, Japanese and Korean-speaking residents.

4. Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health: Addressing

mental health resources, counseling options and support networks in a culturally sensitive manner to foster well-being within the AAPI community.

5. Westchester County Department of Transportation: Facilitating seamless access to transportation services, schedules, and routes for individuals who speak Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Asian American Advisory Board Co-Chair Marjorie Hsu said: “The Asian American Advisory Board applauds this first step in addressing the unique challenge of language access for our AAPI community. Asian seniors, new immigrants and under-served residents don’t avail themselves and their families to very basic necessities because of language barriers. Emergency services, medical and mental health, transportation and social services were determined to be the first priority to lower the barrier for people to access essential services. We will continue to work on better outreach to inform and educate Westchester residents as additional County information becomes translated to Chinese, Korean and Japanese.”

Graduating senior brings CPW’s Gifted Corner Showcase to Iona

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, Cerebral Palsy of Westchester (CPW)’s Gifted Corner premiered a powerful showcase at Iona University as part of Iona’s Abilities Week 2024. Hosted by Senior Annika Ziels, and with the support of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, the Gifted Corner’s program was presented as part of Ziels’ senior thesis. CPW’s Ollie Lowery, Claudia Tompkins, Jennifer Feltenstein and Nickolas Wheeler presented singing, cooking, poetry and a live sports podcast to an entranced student audience – demonstrating how much those with intellectual and developmental disabilities have to offer. The group was vocal about their desire to be acknowledged and “seen” as vibrant contributors to society.

The Gifted Corner was originally conceived by a group of CPW’s Self-Advocates as part of “We the People - Partners in Advocacy: Shifting social perception about disability and the value of difference in our community,” a program facilitated by Carol Blessing from Cornell University. CPW’s team chose to use a showcase-styled platform to educate the community about individuals like themselves who are living with disabilities, and to banish some of the negative conceptions.

“With a little bit of assistance, we can be full

members of the community,” commented the advocates. The Gifted Corner’s mission statement includes “Shifting perceptions by showing what we can bring to society … Let’s Stand Together and Be Better Together!”

Iona University Senior Annika Ziels has been volunteering with CPW since the fall of 2022. Connecting those living with disabilities and the broader community has been part of her personal mission and has played a part in her studies ever since she participated in her high school’s peer mentor integration program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Ziels initially committed to volunteering at CPW once every other week, but soon began showing up weekly. She organized friendship visits with her Iona peers, bringing in 8-10 volunteers every week to assist in various art and recreational programs at CPW. When CPW volunteer and internship placement manager Joan Colangelo approached Ziels about arranging a showcase for the Gifted Corner, Ziels quickly went to work, realizing that the Gifted Corner’s mission so perfectly matched her own and aligned so well with her senior thesis, which broaches on the subject of repre-

sentation and inclusion of those with IDD’s in the media and the arts.

“Annika has been a wonderful addition to CPW, helping to bring in different people from the Iona University community, helping them to get to know the individuals here, and connecting our communities,” Colangelo said.

Celebrating its 75th year in 2024, Cerebral Palsy of Westchester’s mission is to advance the independence, productivity, and full citizenship of people living with all developmental disabilities including autism, neurological impairments, intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy. CPW’s main campus is located in Rye Brook, NY, housing a special education school, an adult day habilitation program and recreation programs. CPW operates the United Preschool Center in White Plains, as well as seven group homes throughout Westchester. Through a comprehensive network of educational programs, day services, residential sites, therapeutic services, employment training, recreation programs and advocacy, the agency helps thousands of children and adults in Westchester and Fairfield Counties live more productive and satisfying lives. The final countdown

It may seem a bit unfair that the good weather we’ve waited for all spring finally shows up on the last week of the regular season, but here we are; warm climes and sunshine for Championship Week in Section 1.

Now don’t get me wrong; even if it were 60 degrees and breezy, the last—and next—few days would still be filled the familiar sights and sounds of late May—Section 1’s top teams grinding through a grueling playoff scheduled until only the top two squads remain, taking the field in front of rabid fans at a neutral site.

But a little bit of sunshine makes everything a little bit better.

From a storyline standpoint, we’ve got some real doozies; Eastchester’s baseball team reaching the Class AA finals on the strength of two shutout pitching performances and two home runs that propelled them through the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. A No. 3-seeded Harrison softball team running to the championship game with three straight wins by at least nine runs. Rye’s girls lacrosse team earning another shot at a Nyack group that dealt them a close loss early in the season, everything to set the stage for an inevitable final showdown. This is why we play the games right?

Sure, I’m going to busy this weekend, but it’s a good kind of busy. Will I be able to make it to every game on the docket? Probably not; I’ll be driving back and

forth between Lakeland and North Rockland all day on Saturday, putting miles on my car for a good cause, the chance to catch one of our Review teams taking home a Section 1 crown.

The best thing about these one-game championships is that anything can happen. A quick start from an underdog can change the complexion of a game, star plays made by unlikely heroes can energize a team and a fanbase, the permutations are endless. And in a one game affair, that kind of uncertainty means that the stakes of every pitch and every face-off are magnified ten-fold.

Who will be left standing after this weekend? We won’t know until the final whistle sounds, the final out recorded. The future is wide open right now for the teams still

batting for their seasons and the immediacy of the moment makes this weekend’s games must-watches.

So let’s break out our sunscreen, find a comfortable spot on the bleachers and settle in for a weekend full of drama. It’s the end of the spring season, and I’m sure we’ve saved the best for last.

Eagles edge Harrison on Porcello blast

• Matt Porcello hit a 2-run

• Jason Ugalde threw a C G shutout

• Marco Citro allowed just 4 hits

In a game between two ball clubs built around pitching and defense, it’s no surprise that runs were at a premium when Harrison squared off against Eastchester in the Class AA on Monday afternoon.

In fact, it was a two-run, first-inning blast off the bat of Eastchester’s Matt Porcello that would account for the entirety of the offense on the day, as Porcello’s drive off Harrison starter Marco Citro stood up as the Eagles came away with a 2-0 victory to keep their season alive.

Porcello said he was just doing his best to make decent contact when he connected with a Citro offering, driving the ball over the left-centerfield fence.

“I was just looking for

something I liked, and we obviously new Marco was a great pitcher coming in,” Porcello said. “But I liked that one and was able to get him there; we knew [starting pitcher] Jason Ugalde was going to give us a big performance and we went from there.”

Ugalde ran into a bit of trouble early on, as Harrison had runners at second and third in the first inning, but a brilliant play by third baseman Aidan Schultz kept the Huskies off the board, leading to Porcello’s decisive homer in the bottom half of the inning.

Ugalde would go on to scatter three hits over the course of seven innings, fanning five batters to pick up the complete game win. His Harrison counterpart was nearly as effective, allowing just four hits on the afternoon.

“There were definitely some nerves there in that first inning,” said Ugalde. “But that homer gave me so much confidence, I knew I was going to give the team some good innings today, but I definitely felt a little more comfortable after getting those two runs early.”

Eastchester head coach Jesse Waters credited the senior for his poise on the mound today, noting that Ugalde—who was brought in

to close out a tense extra-innings affair in the 2022 semifinals as a sophomore— has consistently come up big throughout his career at Eastchester.

“He’s always showed a lot of maturity out there, now we’re just able to get more

length out of him,” said Waters. “He wants the ball, he’s wanted it all year, and I can’t say enough about what he’s meant to this team.”

With the win, No. 3 Eastchester will move on to the Class AA semifinals, where they will take on top-seeded

Mahopac on Wednesday afternoon—after press time.

The Wolf Pac squeaked by No. 8 seed Suffern on Monday, beating the Mounties 4-3 on an RBI by DJ DeMatteo.

“Our guys played against Mahopac in the finals of a

summer league we played in, so we’re familiar with them,” said Waters. “Every game is going to be tough at this point of the year; nothing is going to be easy.”
