Mamaroneck resident creates kids journal Making art is not only enjoyable for children but significant in their emotional, cognitive and social development. “Draw and Discover: An Art-Making Journal for Kids” contains 60 carefully created prompts to help children become aware of their feelings, name them, express them and pay attention to the physical sensations that accompany them. Developed by an experienced art therapist, this journal uses art-making and drawing as a vehicle for children to learn about themselves and how they fit into the world. The journal gives children a safe place to explore on their own and invites them to share their work with trusted adults in their lives. It also contains a section for adults that addresses the process of making art with children and best practices for how to respond when a child shares their art and tells their story. This sharing opens
conversations and helps develop connections between adult and child. Structured enough to give children guidance and open-ended enough to give them freedom to explore and discover what emerges, the journal is perfect for children who like to draw as well as those children who prefer not to write. Caren Sacks, is a licensed, board certified creative art therapist and board-certified art therapy supervisor who has been providing clinical services in a variety of settings for more than 40 years. In addition to a master’s degree in Art Therapy she completed a certificate in the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program at the New Hope Guild Center and was a Full Adjunct Professor in the Art Therapy Master’s Program at The College of New Rochelle. The Westchester County Office of Economic Development, in partnership with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, is pleased to announce the launch of a Quantum Computing and Networking Technology Mobilization (QUANTM) consortium. QUANTM, which met for the second time in December, has already convened more than 40 stakeholders from across the New York Metro region, representing more than 25 organizations and institutions, to begin developing a strategy for quantum information science and technology (QIST) job growth. developing plans for promoting broad-based economic growth, creating good-paying jobs, assessing job quality, and helping students and workers gain training for advanced careers. Westchester County is delighted to have a team of innovative and forward-thinking partners at the table for this collaboration – including the New York City Economic Development Corporation – and is committed to driving regional growth in this booming national sector,” said Westchester County Executive George Latimer. Among the QUANTM Consortium’s goals, are: • develop a comprehensive regional technology strategy that that ensures QIST jobs will start, grow and remain in the region; • address regional inequities, and strengthen the labor and education infrastructure, in the QIST ecosystem; and, • develop QIST workforce development plans that embrace equity and diversity. Specialized working groups will be established within the QUANTM Consortium in early 2024. “The QUANTM Consortium will forge powerful connections among businesses, workforce advocates, and educational institutions in support of talent development, job creation and economic growth in the QIST ecosystem. The New York Metro Region is already home to a highly-educated and -skilled workforce, and growth in QIST will further enhance this position of excellence,” said Westchester County Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Deborah Novick.

Westchester film industry shines: Multiple nominations, wins during awards season Graphic Designer | Design2pro
In a testament to its growing prominence in the entertainment industry as a film destination, Westchester County is well-represented this awards season, with several shows filmed within its borders garnering 56 Emmy Award nominations and notching nine wins in Monday night’s ceremony. The industry bestowed additional acclaim on productions filmed here with honors at last week’s Golden Globes and with recent honors from the prestigious Critics Choice Association, and Screen Actors, Producers and Directors Guilds. County Executive George Latimer said: “The film industry’s impact on Westchester is undeniable. A driving force for investment, film production is a $1.1 billion sector in Westchester. It showcases our assets, creates jobs, supports local vendors, and attracts audiences here and around the world.” HBO’s “Succession” swept awards this year, scoring six Emmys, including outstanding drama and best writing in drama for show creator, Jesse Armstrong; four Golden Globes, including best drama, and three Critic’s Choice Awards. The series is set in New York City and in locations around the world, but the production filmed several episodes in film-friendly Westchester County. The shocking episode centering on the death of patriarch Logan Roy features scenes filmed at Westchester County Airport. The long-running Amazon Prime show “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” filmed at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle for its last season. The comedy earned two Emmy awards, for period makeup and cinematography. This year’s win-
ners also include the Hulu murder mystery, “Only Murders in the Building,” which filmed at the Westchester County Records Center. The series received an Emmy for outstanding production design and a Critic’s Choice award for acting for star Meryl Streep. Notably, Alchemy Post Sound, a post-production sound studio in Peekskill, took home a Creative Arts Emmy for its sound editing work on “The Bear” (FX). The honors celebrate how attractive our region is to the film industry and signal the quality of production that’s taking place.” Film business has steadily grown due in no small part to the services provided by Westchester County Tourism & Film. The film office provides location guidance, offers technical visits, and facilitates the permit process. The support makes a big difference in choosing where to film, according to many industry professionals. Location manager for “FBI: Most Wanted” Mike Hartel said: “They understand our needs and pave the way for successful filming. Westchester provides a wide range of looks and plenty of space to park trucks and equipment, set up complicated shoots, and establish base camps. Whether I need a traditional English garden, a Florida marina, a suburban home, or a wooded area, I know that Westchester has a location and facilitators to make filming as easy as possible.” Westchester’s film-friendly communities enhance the appeal of filming here, with crews visiting local parks and enjoying the best of the area, adds Michael Engler, “The Gilded Age” director. “We love shooting in Westchester. When we go up there, everyone enjoys it and stays for a few days... People are extremely friendly and gracious…creating a sense of community.” The Director’s Guild and Producer’s Guild Awards take place on Feb. 10 and 25, respectively, while the SAG Awards takes place Feb. 23.

A telling two weeks It may be hard to believe, but as we speak, the winter season is already drawing to a close. Although it might seem like the season kicked off just yesterday, we’re rounding into the home stretch over the next two weeks, as teams aim to put the finishing touches on the regular season and head into the playoffs with a little bit of momentum. But before we enter postseason competition, there are a number of storylines still playing out that could have big playoff ramifications. I, for one, am very interested to see how everything unfolds. On the basketball scene, there seems to be an unusual amount of parity this year. Sure, there are a few powerhouse teams in the mix;
Mahopac remains undefeated on the boys’ end while the top of the girls brackets feature three teams— Pearl River, Albertus Magnus and Ketcham—without an in-section loss. But more than anything, this season has been marked by tight games and unexpected outcomes, something that portends an interesting bracket layout come February. One of the most intriguing boys teams this year has undoubtedly been Mamaroneck. At 11-1, the Class AAA school may look like a juggernaut, but what makes them compelling isn’t the ease with which they put teams away, it’s the fact that they have truly embraced the “team” concept to become winners. On Tuesday, the Tigers earned a signature win, using a strong second-half effort to unseat perennial power Mount Vernon, beating the Knights by 72-61. Mamaroneck could be the hottest team in Section 1, not
having dropped a game since Dec. 12, but they’ll have to close out the season strong, with upcoming rematches against both Mount Vernon and New Rochelle. On the girls side, Class AA looks to be an absolute powder keg, with its top teams—including Harrison at (9-4)—all angling to knock Magnus off its perch. Hockey-wise, as always, the road to a Section 1 crown will go through Suffern and Pelham, but Rye Town/Harrison can make a case for itself as a true contender. While the Titans might not have played as grueling a schedule as either of the favorites, they have done quite well with the teams they have faced; in fact, RTH is currently undefeated at 11-0 and could conceivably put together a perfect regular season. That won’t be easy, though, as the Titans have nine games over the final two weeks of the sea-

Local wrestlers compete at Westchester County Championships By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor
On January 20th, Yonkers High School turned into the center of the local wrestling universe, as area teams descended upon the Bulldogs’ gymnasium to take part in the 2023-2024 Westchester County Championships. Hundreds of grapplers from both public and private high schools spent the day on the mats on Saturday in order to crown the champions and medalists, a sure sign that the regular season is coming to an end and divisionals and sectionals are looming on the horizon. Competing in 12 weight-classes, a grand total of 78 wrestlers—top six in each division—reached the podium on Saturday, highlighted by the four most outstanding wrestlers, voted on by grade level. The Most Outstanding Wrestlers were Martin Palmomeque, a senior 160-pounder from Peekskill, Fox Lane junior Alex Berisha (215 pounds), Nick Fortug-
no (wrestling at 108 pounds for the combined team of Byram Hills/Briarcliff/Valhalla/Westlake) and New Rochelle’s Fotis Koufalis, an eighth-grader who was named the Most Outstanding Freshman wrestler for his capture of the 101-pound belt. Koufalis is the first eighth grader in New Rochelle program history to win a Westchester County title, and did so by beating Yonkers’ Will Miller in the finals. New Rochelle had a solid day on the mats overall, with three wrestlers reaching the podium. That includes Koufalis, Josue Aguilar (4th place, 108 pounds) and Mateo Crineo, who placed third at 116. Eastchester/Tuckahoe had a total of four wrestlers finish in the top 6, with Kai Sheffield taking third at 138 pounds, Ariano Kukaj placing fourth at 285, Sam Cavanna taking fifth at 160, and Thiago DeCaravalho placing sixth at 215.
