Trinity expansion still awaits approvals

The Trinity Presbyterian Church continues to move forward with a controversial project seeking additional approval for the construction of a 19,200-squarefoot extension to its current 6,800-square-foot structure.

A site plan review was presented by representatives from Divney Tung Schwalbe Intelligent Land Use, a firm representing the church, at the Harrison Planning Board meeting on Jan. 26.

The proposed construction for the 526-530 Anderson Hill Road site includes a new sanctuary with 200 seats, 11 religious instruction classrooms, an extension of the current driveway, a second driveway that would provide a second access point

to Anderson Hill Road and 130 off-street parking spaces. Trinity is also seeking to construct a 70foot steeple for the structure.

This proposal has been a contentious issue between Trinity Presbyterian and the surrounding community for more than two years, with some nearby residents concerned about the traffic that the new church could potentially attract on Anderson Hill Road.

“Anderson Hill Road and Purchase Street is a terrible intersection,” said Anne Krupman, a resident of Purchase who lives near the project site. “[The location] is so inappropriate; I can’t believe the town wants it there.”

Krupman, along with several

other concerned homeowners, were present at the Planning Board meeting on Jan. 26. While the site plan review for the church was being conducted, there were some members of the audience eager to voice their opinions on the proposal concerning traffic issues and the scale of the project. Thomas Heaslip, the chairman of the board, closed off public comment, but assured those wishing to speak that there would be public hearings on the topic in the near future.

“There have been a lot of objections, and there will be more,” Krupman said.

Heaslip could not be reached for comment as of press time.

Village of Tuckahoe considers fast food ban A recent controversy between Subway and the village of Tuckahoe has led to the consideration of a fast food ban.

The ban would prohibit “formula fast food and formula quick casual.” According to Village Administrator David Burke, the Board of Trustees will likely vote on the matter sometime in late spring.

The proposed change in the village law was precipitated by a controversy that erupted last summer when a Subway went through the permitting approval process in order to open up shop along the village’s Main

Street corridor. During a board meeting in July 2015, residents presented a 200-signature-long petition asking that zoning rules be amended to prevent any other chain restaurants from taking up residence in the village.

If approved, the revisions to the existing code calling for a ban on “formula fast food and formula quick casual restaurants” include establishments with seven or more locations on a state or national level. For example, nationally, there are currently nearly 15,000 McDonald’s restaurants and 12,000 Burger King outlets, accord-

ing to figures provided by each company, and such establishments now won’t be allowed in Tuckahoe.

Sit-down chain restaurants with menus and waitstaff such as Applebee’s would still be permitted after the ban, despite the fact that they are considered chains.

However, since Subway has opened its doors, some village trustees have noticed increased foot traffic, a plus for small business owners on Main Street.

“They’re kind of going back and forth on it,” Burke said about the village board.

Parenting workshop: ‘How We Feel and Act’ Harrison resident Douglas Peck will lead this

parenting workshop held on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Halperin building. The workshop, which is appropriate for parents of toddlers ages 2 to 4, focuses on teaching emotional vocabulary to children and modeling the behaviors parents want to see in them. Parents will learn how to teach children words that can help them convey how they feel and display examples of these in their everyday interactions, helping children learn to communicate emotions in an acceptable way without resorting to throwing tantrums.

Read with therapy dog Angie Therapy dog Angie will lend an ear to readers of all ages on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Halperin building. Angie loves to listen to children read and talk to her, and she loves the library. Residents and children of all ages are encouraged to come visit with her.

M&M performance: ‘W.E.B. Du Bois, a Man for All Times’ On Sunday, Feb. 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Halperin building. Celebrate Black History Month with this live performance of “W.E.B. Du Bois, a Man for All Times,” written and directed by Alexa Kelly and presented with the Pulse Theatre Ensemble.

This play entertains and enthralls, as it compels the viewer to travel on this near-100-year journey. The audience is brought to laughter and tears. Brian Richardson portrays W.E.B. Du Bois, a black American born just after the Civil War, and five years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Du Bois fought tirelessly for anti-lynching laws and for civil rights for all people. He believed in women’s rights, and the right for all people to have work, free education and medical coverage. The name of Du Bois would be as famous in America as that of King, who said of his mentor, “History cannot ignore W.E.B. Du Bois.” Running time is Approximately 80 minutes, with no intermission. Purchase College ‘Friends & Family’ concert On Sunday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Purchase College Performing Arts Center, the Philharmonic warmly invites music-lovers of all ages to hop aboard principal conductor Ted Sperling’s guided tour to a family-friendly program, perfect for all ages yet fully satisfying to the most sophisticated musical palates. The annual “Friends & Family” concert will feature opera star Dawn Upshaw, a multiple Grammy-winner, McArthur “genius” and Mount Vernon resident, and welcomes children 17 and under free with a paying adult.

County upgrades PD training, creates new crime lab Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino recently unveiled the newly renovated Westchester County Police Academy following a $9.3 million overhaul to upgrade training facilities and create a new state-of-the-art forensic crime lab.

“This capital project is about much more than bricks and mortar,” Astorino said. “It is about ensuring that police recruits and veteran officers can receive the best training possible for decades to

come. It is about ensuring that our crime lab has the sophisticated tools and technology to meet the evolving demands of modern-day policing. It is about ensuring we are doing all we can to keep our people safe.”

Astorino, who proposed the capital project in 2014, was joined at the ceremony by Public Safety Commissioner George N. Longworth and chiefs and commissioners from multiple departments in the county.

Longworth noted that the academy is used by all police departments in Westchester to train their recruits to become police officers. Veteran officers return for lectures, seminars, supervisor school and other significant training throughout their careers.

The county police crime lab is also utilized by all law enforcement in Westchester to process evidence and assist with criminal investigation and prosecution, he said.

“This capital project is an investment that pays dividends to every city, town and village police department in Westchester along with the county police,” Longworth said.

The Westchester County Police Academy, located at 2 Dana Road in Valhalla, was built in 1986. The building was shared by the New York National Guard and the Westchester County Department of Public Safety until the Guard vacated in 2011.

systems were upgraded and made more energy efficient.

To enhance instruction and training, upgrades were made to the Police Academy classrooms, computer room and drill floor.

Sophisticated audio-visual equipment was obtained for use by instructors to enhance learning and training. Two classrooms can now be opened up into a single, large room, which will enable the academy to host larger-scale lectures or training than previously.

“Sometimes we had to turn people away because a class was filled to capacity,” Longworth said. “Now we have the means

to accommodate everyone when that occurs.”

Additionally, an interactive training area was created off the drill floor to enhance training that recruits and tactical teams receive.

The hallway-like setting enables scenario-based training for making entry into rooms or buildings and handling crisis-intervention situations and active-shooter incidents. An outdoor interactive training area and obstacle course is also being created on the academy grounds to improve physical and tactical training.

The county police Forensic Investigation Unit, which op-

erates the crime lab, was relocated from police headquarters in Hawthorne to the academy building. The expanded space will permit the crime lab to meet the evolving and rigorous standards required by its accrediting agency, The American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/ Laboratory Accreditation Board.

“Westchester County has always been a leader in utilizing forensic investigation to solve crime and hold criminals accountable,” Astorino said. “The new crime lab ensures that we can keep that commitment well into the future.” (Submitted)

“Years ago, doing ceramics was the fad,” Meduri said comparing that to the recent paint-drink craze. “I’ve probably been here about 10 times since this place has opened up.

It’s just something creative, fun and different to do.”

Although Muse has only been up and running in White Plains for five months, the chain has expanded to 14 businesses across New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Massachusetts since opening its first location in Manchester, New Hampshire, in late 2012.

The manager of the White Plains location, Miesha, said working at Muse has made her professional life the happiest it’s ever been.

“I just love seeing people get excited over what they’ve created,” she said. “I think people like coming here because it brings balance to their everyday lives, which are usually spent at a desk.”

The paint-and-sip industry began a little more than 10 years ago when the first studio, Sips n Strokes, opened in Alabama in 2004. The craze has gained rapid momentum since then, as an estimated 1,000 different paint bars have opened throughout the United States and Canada. Paint bar

clients can either rent a party room for a private event or register to paint during public classes offered throughout the week.

One such studio franchise, Pinot’s Palette, recently opened in Tuckahoe, making that location its 90th in the country, and its first in Westchester County.

Although the company is new to Tuckahoe—it has only been open since December 2015—it has grown exponentially since getting its start in Houston in 2009, and now has locations in 37 states and one in Toronto.

Cipollone said the popularity of paint bars makes publicizing his new location a challenge; he mainly depends on word of mouth to draw a crowd. He said his instructors do their best to keep the night light and fun for everyone, but in the end, it’s up to the client to make the best of it.

Julie Alfonso, an instructor and assistant at Muse Paintbar, said one challenging aspect of the job is encouraging adult clientele not to take themselves or their work too seriously. She said there’s always an opportunity to come back and try it again.

“We do our best to make everybody feel comfortable and not hold themselves to an unrealistic standard,” Alfonso said. “This gives people a chance to come out and do something new; to feel like a kid again.”

I would like to take this time to recognize a group of students at Harrison High School.

The students in Ms. Frawley’s class applied to the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, a nationwide contest for middle and high school students, which challenged them to develop concepts for mobile apps that solve problems in their region. After recognizing the problem of poverty and hunger, especially within the greater metropolitan area, the students developed a Pay It Forward app. The Pay It Forward app gives consumers an opportunity to buy a meal for a person in need after purchasing their own food online.

The Harrison students won best in the nation, which was quite an honor, as the award was only given to eight schools. A $20,000 grant will be awarded in support of further development of the app. Congratulations to students Paul Bilotta, Thomas Alvarado, Christine Cardascia,

Ricky Harris, Josh Munoz, Ben Struhl and their teacher, Diane Frawley, on this very impressive accomplishment.

A new Rye drug and alcohol coalition launched an online survey on Feb. 1 aimed at collecting data on parental attitudes and knowledge of their childrens’ drug and alcohol habits.

Beyond gathering data, one of the main goals of the survey is to start a communitywide conversation about drug and alcohol use, according Nancy Pasquale, a co-founder of the Adults and Children Together, ACT, anti-drug coalition and member of the Rye City Board of Education.

Those behind the survey hope it will engage as many members of the community across as many coalition member groups as possible, Pasquale said. The coalition will use data from the survey

to pinpoint problems and then align the coalition groups best suited to address them.

Rye Councilwoman Julie Killian, also a co-founder of ACT, echoed how important these types of conversations are.

The coalition grew out of parental conversations about drug and alcohol concerns.

“We had the feeling that this was something that we might need in our community,” Killian said.

The city lags behind several neighboring communities including Larchmont and Mamaroneck that have longstanding coalitions in their communities.

In Larchmont, the Responsible Action: Drug and Alcohol Resource, RADAR, coalition has existed for more than 20 years.

“We are very early in this process, as a community,” Pasquale said.

Formed in October 2015, ACT includes representatives from organizations including the city of Rye Police Department, City Council, school district, Rye Youth Council, local clergy and St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester in Harrison.

During its one-year grant period, ACT will operate under the tutelage of the Westchester Community Coalition, a group that oversees and mentors drug and alcohol prevention groups throughout the county. The Westchester Community Coalition will provide mentoring services to Rye-ACT and act as a fiscal agent for the Rye startup.

Village of Larchmont considers bike lanes The Larchmont Traffic Commission has a presentation and proposal ready for the village Board of Trustees to create bike lanes.

According to Carol Miller, co-chair of the Traffic Commission, the idea was formed in either 2007 or 2008, and the commission started working with the Rye YMCA to come up with ideas on how to incorporate bike lanes into the wide village streets. After the project was tabled for a while, Carolyn Lee, chairwoman of the Recreation Committee, approached the mayor about it to pick up where the Traffic Commission left off.

They were able to dig up a report that the Rye YMCA completed with the help of New York University Wagner, the graduate school for public service.

In the report, which included the city of Rye, the town of Mamaroneck and the villages of Larchmont and Mamaroneck, the NYU Wagner team describes types of bike lanes, including sharrows—painted markings on the roadway, indicating that the road is a shared space for both motorists and recreational

users—dedicated bike lanes— space for bicyclists along roadways, at least 5 feet in width and in the same direction as prevailing traffic—and two-way bike lanes—the same as a dedicated bike lane, but doubled in width, allowing for two directions of bike traffic.

The study recommends two different sections of roadway in the village of Larchmont: for Chatsworth Avenue (from Palmer Avenue south to Boston Post Road) and Larchmont Avenue (from Palmer Avenue south to Magnolia Avenue).

Lee, who told the Review that she is an avid biker, feels strongly that residents should be bik-

ing and walking more.

“My kids bike to school or walk to school every day, and they’re not the norm,” she said.

Lee, however, realizes that many parents make the choice to drive their children places simply for safety reasons.

The implementation of these lanes would be fairly simple, according to Miller.

“It requires some careful measuring and painting, and possibly labeling,” she said, adding that it would be costeffective. “There’s no construction, nothing has to be widened, and no traffic patterns have to change.”

Fordham Westchester’s Graduate School of Education is launching a Doctor of Education, EdD, program that prepares graduates for leadership positions in K-12 settings. An EdD is often required for assistant superintendent and superintendent positions in K-12.

The innovative doctoral program is based on the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate, CPED, model, which creates scholar-practitioners through blending theory and practice to solve contemporary problems in K-12 schools. The program emphasizes collaborative learning and leadership development and is designed with applied research and dissertation development as key components of each course.

The 45-credit program will start in the fall of 2016.

Fordham’s unique dissertation program matches small groups of students with high level, local school administrators for three years. Students work with an administrator on real-time issues facing the district. Each student’s dissertation will be based on a

different aspect of this issue.

In addition to the general requirements for graduate study in the Graduate School of Education, all applicants must: • Have a master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA • Hold educational administration certification • Have three years of educational leadership experience • Have a leadership role in their school or district • Submit scores for either the

Halstead Ave. bakery hosts ‘Visiting Chef Night’

By KILEY STEVENS Staff Writer In a small, cozy bakery on Halstead Avenue, brightly colored sweet treats line the walls of a glass case. The walls, painted a bright teal, pop with fun, chalkboard signs welcoming guests.

One of the signs reads “Welcome Chef Bill Powell.” On this particular evening, men, women and children alike poured into Nora’s Ovenworks for “Visiting Chef Night,” a new event hosted by bakery owner Nora Brunnett that features local chefs who teach participants how to make a specialty dish.

On Jan. 29, Nora’s welcomed Chef Powell of Powell’s Catering in Harrison.

On the menu for the evening’s demonstration were Powell’s famous hamburgers. Powell, who has owned Powell’s Catering for 35 years and is a lifelong Harrison resident, kept the kids giggling as he made burger after burger in the bakery’s kitchen, instructing the guests to only flip the burger once, and to never press down on it with a spatula.

A table loaded with toppings and condiments was nearly bare after each participant chowed down on their burger. Many of the children participating chose the usual toppings: lettuce, tomato and ketchup. One adventurous 6-year-old

topped her burger with bacon and a fried egg. With the sound of people chewing, the only noise in the room, it was clear that the burgers were a big hit.

“Nora picked them,” said Powell of his meal choice, adding that he loves community events such as this one. “It’s always new people, and you get to show what you do well.”

Powell said that Brunnett has been a great new asset to the neighborhood since her opening in December 2014, and joked with participants that when he has a bad day, he goes to the bakery for a cupcake.

Most of the people in attendance at last Friday’s event were mother-daughter teams, with a dad and a few teams of friends sprinkled in. Josie Marsico and

her daughter, Tessa, 6, of Harrison, were the first to arrive, eager to learn how to cook hamburgers and get a lesson in peach cobbler from Brunnett.

“I like the Cooking Channel and I want to be on [a show],” Tessa said, who also told the Review that her favorite thing to cook is “almost everything.”

Another participant, 8-year-old Sofia, said through a mouthful of a bacon-topped burger, “You should come to Nora’s Ovenworks every day,” and recommended Brunnett’s beet brownies.

According to Sofia, the brownie is so good, you can’t even taste the beets—and she would know, she doesn’t like beets.

peach cobbler. Brunnett allowed each child to lay the crust on top of the cobbler to make a crisscross shape with the dough. She warned that they could eat the raw crust, but that it probably wouldn’t taste very good. In true childlike fashion, almost all of them ate it anyway.

The class enjoyed the fruits of their labor and a look of satisfaction swept across Brunnett’s face as she cleaned up. Each guest took their turn thanking her and expressed their excitement for more cooking classes.

The first event, held on Jan. 15, featured Chef Anthony from Delfino’s, the Italian restaurant located next door to the bakery. Her love for community and family is what drove Brunnett to plan these events, she said, adding that, after the first one, she couldn’t sleep because she was excited.

“I really like the teaching part of it and I’m a big community girl,” said Brunnett, who has lived in Harrison for eight years.

She said the event is a great way for residents to get to know and build relationships with local restaurant’s chefs; something she believes benefits all of Harrison. This is probably what makes choosing the visiting chefs so easy for her.

“I go to a lot of the places,” Brunnett said. “My family and I eat at Billy [Powell]’s place;

we eat at the taqueria; we eat at Rattlesnake Jack’s.” She said that every chef she has asked to present so far has been receptive.

Brunnett added that she thinks the price of the event is great for what the participant gets. Classes run at $30 per person, or $55 per couple, which can include a parent-child team, and $15 for each additional child. Classes include a cooking lesson from the visiting chef, a dessert lesson from Brunnett, and—the best part—a chance to eat.

Brunnett plans to continue these events through the winter and summer when families have more time to spend together.

The next installment of Visiting Chef Night is on Friday, Feb. 5, after press time, which will feature resident chef Chai-Li, who will teach guests how to make Chinese dumplings, a choice Brunnett said was “purely selfish,” due to her love of her dumplings.

Digging in with The Diet Detective RHYMES WITH CRAZY Lenore Skenazy

It’s a cruel joke that the Super Bowl comes just a little over a month after we have resolved to forsake all wings, chips, dip, pizza, soda, beer, cheese sticks, Cheez-Its, Cheetos and anything else that is bright orange and vaguely food-like.

Ha. That’s why every year around this time, the press turns its hungry eyes to Charles Platkin— a.k.a. The Diet Detective, a.k.a.

Hunter College’s distinguished lecturer­—for some of his trademark “equivalencies.”

For instance: Working off the calories of a footlong Italian subsandwich would require you to walk the entire length of the Brooklyn Bridge—14 times.

That’s a Dr. Platkin equivalency.

So are these: Four swigs of Bud Light = eight minutes of playing pro football.

One handful of pita chips with artichoke dip = running 141 football fields.

Working off one measly Cheeto—one! = chanting and waving around a foam hand for two minutes.

And God forbid you scarf down four Domino’s Stuffed Cheesy Bacon Jalapeno Breadsticks. That requires 193 touchdown dances.

So how did Platkin, a lawyer, publisher, technologist, real estate guy and bestselling author, become obsessed with translating calories into everyday activities? It all started when he was young—and tubby.

“I remember my doctor saying, ‘You’re not going to have a good social life because you’re fat,’” Platkin said. “And I was like, ‘You don’t know what you’re talking about.’ But the truth was, I was ostracized as a child.”

He was still overweight in early adulthood when he decided to write a book on how to truly change your life. This was after he’d gotten the law degree, but still was floundering—and single. “I was confused. I was thinking about changing behavior. I was overweight and had terrible relationships,” he said.

So, for three years, he researched how real behavioral change happens.

He was finally ready to hand in his manuscript when he realized something. “I hadn’t changed one behavior of my own!” So he decided to actually follow his own advice and, at last, he started losing weight.

He also realized that the underlying cause of ending up “with difficult and strange kinds of women” was him.

Changing required that word we hear so often lately: mindfulness. He had to pay attention to what he ate, and when. And who he dated, and why. He also had to stop feeling too embarrassed to ask for things like a plain grilled chicken breast when he went out to eat. In other words, he had to stop being ashamed to admit he knew he was fat and wanted to lose weight.

He folded his stories into the book and it became the bestseller “Breaking the Pattern.”

The great thing about mindfulness, Platkin says, is that you don’t have to be mindful for-

ever. He said if you had to use Google Maps every day to figure out what floor your office is on, that would be painful. (And you would need some other kind of help.) But after a short while, of course, you know the drill.

It’s the same with figuring out what your food patterns are. And once you notice that every night, right before bed, you eat a bowl of Ben & Jerry’s, well then, all you have to do is start figuring out a “food swap”—an alternative. For Platkin, he started making swaps just like the ones you can make on Super Bowl Sunday: Toasted pita points instead of chips. Pizza without the mozzarella—add your own parmesan. Slow-churned Breyers instead of Ben & Jerry’s.

The idea is to concentrate not on what you can’t have, but on what you can. And since we gobble down many foods without realizing just how fattening they are, he popularized the “equivalencies.” FYI: One bowl of chili = over an hour of cheerleading.

Platkin is now married and has a daughter. One day, a couple years ago, he was walking her to school and saw her holding her tummy in. He asked why.

Well, of course she was practicing looking skinny.

“I just want you to know that you don’t ever have to worry about dieting or any of these things,” he told his daughter.

Life is not about forsaking.

It’s about embracing who you are and what you love.

So long as it’s not Domino’s Stuffed Cheesy Bacon Jalapeno Breadsticks.

Escape from winter with the art of flamenco

By MARA RUPNERS Contributor Have you had enough of winter? Then let’s get out of here, and head on a journey to someplace warm. How about, for example, the rocky, sun-baked region on Spain’s southern coast known as Andalucía?

Andalucía is a place that embodies all of our stereotypes of Spain: spirited and passionate, a fiesta-loving land of guitarwielding troubadours, reckless bullfighters, feisty operatic heroines. This simplistic portrait is no doubt a bit outdated and overly romantic, but it does carry an element of truth, and nowhere is this truth more evident than in the age-old art form of flamenco.

Flamenco is part folk tradition, part high art. It mixes the gypsy music of the Romani people with the rhythms of North Africa, brought to Andalucía by the Moors—a rich blend that

makes flamenco a unique form of artistic expression, full of irrepressible, complex rhythms and anguished melodies. It includes cante (singing), toque (guitar-playing), baile (dance), jaleo (vocalizations), palmas (hand-clapping) and pitos (finger-snapping).

This is no social dance you can pick up in a lesson or two; it is performance art at its finest and its technical demands are arduous. Mastery requires years of training and dedication, and the intensity of emotion generated during a professional performance is truly something unforgettable.

County announces new drop boxes for unused meds Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino recently announced that 12 additional drop boxes for unused prescription drugs have been brought to the county, thanks to an $8,000 state grant secured by Sen. Terrence Murphy, a Yorktown Republican.

The proper disposal of unused prescription medication is critical so they do not get into our water systems or into the hands of people who can misuse them. Both men spoke of the local heroin epidemic that can often start with prescription drug abuse.

“Prescription medication can be a lifesaver when properly used, but when not properly disposed of they can be a real health and safety issue,” Astorino said.

“Thanks to Sen. Murphy’s efforts, we have delivered 12 more of these receptacles, where residents can take their unused medications for proper disposal. Don’t throw them in the trash, don’t flush them down the toilet and don’t just leave them lying around the house. Go to your nearest drop box and dispose of them properly.”

Westchester County is a pioneer in the Med Return effort, having started the practice back in 2008. The Astorino administration has dramatically increased the number of municipalities

equipped with them, and after Jan. 27’s announcement, the total number of drop boxes within the county stands at 38.

Super Bowl? Super boring LIVE MIKE Mike Smith

I can’t really explain it, but here we are, just days from the biggest sporting event of the calendar year, and I’m having trouble getting “super” excited.

Even if you aren’t a fan of the NFL, even if you haven’t watched a down of football all season, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to tune in on Sunday and watch the Panthers play the Broncos in Super Bowl 50; it’s just kind of what America does.

The two best teams on the planet going at it, a tonnage of star power, all the trappings of pageantry and excess that have come to define the NFL, and here I sit, overwhelmingly ambivalent about it all.

On the surface, it doesn’t make much sense.

If you’re looking from a dramatic narrative, this Super Bowl

has it. I mean, just look at the quarterbacks. On one side, you have Peyton Manning, the most prolific passer in the history of the NFL, playing in what may be his last football game. If Peyton represents the NFL’s past, his counterpart on the Panthers, Cam Newton, is clearly its future. At just 26 years old, Newton has put together an MVP season this year and is well on his way to becoming the face of the league, like Manning—and New England’s Tom Brady— were before him.

On the surface, can you ask for a more compelling storyline?

The aging gunslinger returns to town for one final draw-down with the pistolero who grew up idolizing him; it’s the stuff of Hollywood.

Unfortunately for Manning, this story won’t likely end with him riding off triumphantly into the sunset.

Conventional wisdom has long held the Super Bowl as a game destined to be something

of a disappointment. With two weeks of hype leading into the big game, it’s not hard to see why; anything less than a game that is decided in the final minutes couldn’t possibly live up to the hoopla surrounding the event.

But we’ve gotten kind of spoiled for the last decade or so in terms of Super Bowl finishes.

Between the Giants’ wins over the Patriots in 2008 and 2012, the Steelers’ 27-23 win over the Cardinals in 2009, the epic blackout game between the 49ers and the Ravens in 2013, and last year’s game-winning interception to cement another Lombardi Trophy win for the Pats, these games have been tremendously competitive. The last real dud, so to speak, was two years ago when Seattle put a 43-8 whoopping on—you guessed it—Peyton and the Broncos.

I mean, that game was out of hand by the time the coin-flip was over.

And, like it or not, that’s how

I see Sunday’s game unfolding too. Manning was great once, but he no longer has the arm strength to make the big downfield throws. Denver’s ground game is largely ineffective, too.

Sure, the Broncos have a formidable defense, one that was able to pin its ears back two weeks ago and knock Tom Brady around, but then again, Brady isn’t a 6-foot-5, 250-pound phenom with a rocket arm and wideout speed like Newton.

Between Cam’s brilliance, a tough stable of running backs and a Carolina defense that’s every bit as talented as Denver’s, it’s tough to see a scenario in which this game turns out to be competitive.

I’m still going to be tuning in, regardless. It’s Super Bowl Sunday, after all, and crazier things have happened. Maybe Manning can turn back the clock one last time and turn in a Super Bowl performance for the ages.

Maybe the Broncos’ pass rushers can disrupt Newton’s rhythm and somehow limit the damage he can do with his legs. Maybe Panthers’ coach Ron Rivera’s risk-taking blows up in Caro-

lina’s face in a big spot and gives Denver a chance to win it late.

It’s unlikely, but the idea that we might see something unexpected is why we watch this game in the first place.

Let’s just hope the fireworks aren’t limited to the halftime show.

Cheerleaders take mat at counties

By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor Last week, several of the area’s top cheerleading squads traveled to the Westchester County Center in White Plains to compete in the 67th annual Westchester County Cheerleading Invitational. The two-day competition, which took place on Jan. 27 and Jan. 28, saw teams battle for local supremacy and get in some much-needed work before traveling to Orlando, Florida, for the Universal Cheerleading Association’s national championship event this week.

North Rockland nabbed the top spot in the Grand Championships for the third year in a row, but a number of local squads, including Eastchester and New Rochelle, also fared well in the event. Both the Eagles and Huguenots performed well enough in their first performances to earn a spot in the Jan. 28 Grand Championship round.

Kearns said that while her team may not have been its best on Jan. 27, its performance hinted at what the team is capable of.

“They did great, but they are capable of so much more,” she said. “When they hit, they are dynamite, and we had some alternates in, we had a couple of injuries, but I think they did pretty well.”

Like the Eagles, the Huguenots fell short of their county title goal, but New Rochelle coach Chrissy Stanionis was still impressed with her team’s performance.

“The season’s been going great, we have a very difficult routine, and our scores kind of threw me for a loop,” she said.

“But the one thing we’ve talked about as a team is fighting for everything, getting through the mistakes and relying on each other out on the mat.”

Eastchester, New Rochelle and Harrison, who also competed at the County Center, will all be heading to Florida for nation-

als, which will begin on Feb. 6, but the teams are also in the mix for the first-ever New York State Cheerleading Championship to be held on March 5 in Syracuse.

“Nationals has always been our big thing, so I think the girls are a little unsure of what this state championship will mean,” Kearns said. “It’s going to be interesting to see what a state championship is going to look like.”

Stanionis said that while her team is looking forward to trying to qualify for states, something they will attempt to do at a Feb. 27 meet at Harrison High School, the team’s sights are firmly set on a strong showing in Orlando.

“I’m sure the school would like us to attend the state championship in its first year, and the girls know that,” she said. “But right now, our focus is on nationals, and we will zone in on the state level when we get back.”

Rye tops rival Harrison in thriller

By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor Playing in front of a raucous home crowd on Feb. 1, Rye celebrated its senior night in style, honoring the Garnets’ graduating class with a hard-fought 5752 win over rival Harrison. The win, though not Rye’s easiest of the season, may have been the biggest, as it clinched yet another league title for the Garnets.

Rye’s Katie Popp scored a game-high 21 points on Monday in a game that the Garnets could never seem to crack open. Twice, Rye flirted with a double-digit lead, but Harrison came back both times—thanks in part to the efforts of Gia Mancini, who had 13 points, and Avery LaBarbera and Kendall Lefkowitz, who each had 12—to head into the final minute of play trailing by just three points. With 11.4 seconds left, the Huskies had a chance to tie the game, but a 3-point attempt by Mancini rimmed out, ending the threat.

“We beat them the first time, so we knew they were going to come back stronger,” Eck said.

“They’re a really good team,

and they’ve got so many great, athletic players.”

Rye, which usually thrives in up-tempo games, was effective in its half-court sets, despite a solid defensive effort from the Huskies.

“They came out strong, especially defensively,” Eck said.

“But we were able to capitalize on their zone defense and move the ball around really well.”

In addition to clinching a league title, the Garnets also moved another step closer to a second goal with the win, as they need just two more victories in their final three games to finish the season with a perfect in-league record.

“This was an important win because it’s Harrison and it’s our league rival,” Eck said. “But we also want to go undefeated in our league and we knew this would be a tough game.”

The Garnets can run the league table with wins over Port Chester and Pelham this week, after press time, before traveling to Lakeland for their regular season finale on Feb. 8. As the playoffs loom, Eck said, the Garnets will have to rely on the lessons they learned in tight games like the victory over Harrison.

“It was good,” she said. “It replicated a playoff atmosphere.

The intensity, the crowd was into it, so it’s going to help us prepare for the first few rounds of the playoffs.”

Huskies host Coaches vs. Cancer showcase

By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor On Jan. 30, eight Section I teams took the court at Harrison High School to compete in the Lower Hudson Basketball Coaches Association’s annual Coaches vs. Cancer showcase.

Several local squads, including Harrison, Rye and Mamaroneck, were in action, hoping to build momentum as the playoffs approach while raising money for cancer research.

The Coaches vs. Cancer program, founded in 1994, is a nationwide collaboration between basketball coaches and the American Cancer Society, aimed to raise money for cancer research and awareness through basketball. Since 2011, the LHBCA has held its annual event, alternating sites between schools in Rockland, Putnam, Duchess and Westchester counties.

On Saturday, it was Harrison’s turn.

“We were lucky enough to be asked to play last year, in Brewster,” Harrison coach Gary Chi-

arella said. “[The organizers] liked our facilities and this year was a Westchester year, so they asked if we would host.”

The program has raised more than $87 million nationwide since its inception.

“All of the money from tickets and concessions went to the charity,” Chiarella explained.

“We were more than pleased to be involved with this.”

Chiarella’s Huskies had plenty to be happy about on Saturday, as they beat Pearl River handily in the night game, topping the Pirates 63-41. Mike Nannariello led the way for Harrison with 14 points, 12 of which came in the third quarter, while Zach Evans scored eight points en route to being named the game’s MVP. Prior to the Huskies’ game, Class AA Saunders squared off with conference foe Fox Lane, downing the Foxes 50-32 thanks to 17 points from senior guard Anthony Miller.

In the tipoff, Rye withstood a late charge from John Jay East Fishkill, topping their foes 51-44 after outscoring the Patriots 20-3 in the first quarter. Despite the Panthers’ surge in the second half, Rye’s Charlie Nagle, who had 21 points, said that the Garnets never felt overwhelmed by the pressure.

“Coach told us at halftime that they were a good team and they could come back easily,” Nagle said. “We just had to keep on playing together... in order to win this game.”

As for Rye’s participation in the event, Chiarella said he was happy for the Garnets’ involvement, but only wished that there was a little more time in between the Coaches vs. Cancer showcase and their rival’s next trip to Harrison on Feb. 1.

“It was nice, they wanted to be involved,” Chiarella joked. “I just don’t really like them playing one game before they’re coming here to play us.”
