SUNY Purchase students break world record On Oct. 11, 300 volunteers from SUNY Purchase along with Chef Jet Tila, of the Food Network, broke the world’s record for longest California roll. Prior to this, the record was a 422-foot roll, which was held

by UMass Amherst. SUNY Purchase students beat the record by

creating a 504-foot roll on the Great Lawn. The event required more than 650 sheets of nori and 300 pounds of sushi rice.

The event was joined by members of the World Record Academy to certify the roll.

After securing their wins at the United States Tennis Association’s sectional championship, three teams from the Rye Racquet Club are moving on to nationals.

During the weekend of Aug. 25, the Rye Racquet Club, RRC, had three of their United States Tennis Association, USTA, competitive teams, made up of women 40 years and over, competing at sectionals in Schenectady.

“It was amazing that all three teams were there, it just added to the excitement,” said Wendy Hyer, co-captain of the 4.0 team.

“The fact that all three teams won is amazing.”

RRC is based in Harrison and offers competitive and noncom-

petitive junior and adult tennis programs.

This year will be Hyer’s and her co-captain, Gena Pettinato’s, second time going to nationals.

Hyer, of Rye, explained that ever since her first time at nationals, she’s wanted to go back, saying it’s part of the “addictive nature” of winning.

Pettinato, of Rye, said that having already experienced nationals once, she and Hyer feel like they know what to expect from the tournament.

In preparation for the national championship, Pettinato said their team is trying to practice on outdoor hard courts in order to mimic the conditions they’ll be playing in.

“Outdoors you have all the elements, there are so many distractions when you’re playing outside,” she said.

Corinna Ausfahl, captain of the 4.5+ team, said that their team’s approach has included studying their competition and figuring out which pairings of players on their team work best together.

This strategic preparation is only one factor in their journey. Pettinato believes that her team’s unique dynamic is what makes them such a force to be reckoned with.

“We put together this team of women who we thought shared a passion for the game,” she said.

Pettinato went on to say that the women all bring something different to their team.

“We’re mothers, college students, we have full time jobs,” she said. “We have a nice profile of women and yet we come together, enjoy the game, and support each other.”

Paula Lapkin, co-captain of the 3.5 team, described a similar dynamic in her team.

“Everyone just kind of supports each other, [and] really roots for the other one… which I think is what’s taking us to the next level,” said Lapkin, of Harrison.

Pettinato said that having these teams of older women allows for them to have a way to step away from their families for a little while, and do something for themselves.

“There are very rare moments when we can do it, and we really enjoy it when we’re out [on the court],” she said.

The teams will each be taking a weekend away for themselves in October to travel to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale in Florida to compete in the USTA national championships.

“It’s truly been a great season for the women’s team tennis here at Rye Racquet,” Hyer said.

SUNY Purchase presents ‘Classic Broadway’ concert From Nov. 9 through Nov. 12, SUNY Purchase Opera will stroll down Broadway from the South Pacific to the back streets of London to visit Sweeney Todd.

“Classic Broadway” in concert will feature the SUNY Purchase Symphony Opera under the baton of musical director Hugh Mur-

“Classic Broadway” in concert showcases students from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music’s Department of Opera Performance and Vocal Studies—a highly selective program that has won 15 top awards from

the National Opera Association for its acclaimed productions, among other national accolades.

While the SUNY Purchase Opera department has been highly successful in preparing young singers for operatic careers around the world, Trussel and Murphy are looking forward to expanding the singers’ repertoire to include musical theater pieces that classically-trained singers might realistically be expected to perform as they build their operatic careers.

Trussel and Murphy said, “Musical Theater is now a staple in most opera companies. When students land an audition with an opera company, they are often asked to sing a song by such composers as Sondheim, Bernstein, or Rogers and Hammerstein right along with their Mozart, Strauss, and Puccini arias.”

They continued, “As musical theater performance and vocal styles present unique challenges, we wanted to provide our students with additional training and performance opportunities to best prepare them for their careers. We look forward to presenting a full evening of beautiful songs, duets, and ensemble numbers from the American musical theater genre that will provide valuable experience for the students while appealing to audiences of all ages.”

It’s still great to live in Harrison HARRISON HAPPENINGS Mayor Ron Belmont

On the weekend of Oct. 7 and 8, Harrison held its 40th It’s Great to Live in Harrison/Columbus Day celebration. Our community takes tremendous pleasure in this annual tradition as our nation honors the culture and heritage of Italian-Americans. In addition to recognizing the many achievements of Italian-Americans, Harrison residents and visitors participated in a weekend of exciting events.

Saturday evening’s fireworks display was spectacular and the open house at police headquarters, featuring a display of emergency apparatus and tours of the police station, was well attended.

Although the weather did not fully cooperate, a sizeable crowd attended the annual It’s Great to Live in Harrison Day Parade on Monday, Oct. 9. Marching bands serenaded as student groups and civic organizations marched down Halstead Avenue. Following the parade, a fiesta took place in Ma Riis Park and included a variety of children’s activities.

It was a successful event, full of national and hometown pride. I enjoyed seeing many friends, and familiar faces, as the weekend’s festivities took place.

At the post-parade celebra-

tion, the late Joseph Cannella was posthumously recognized as this year’s Citizen of the Year. Joe was a longtime Harrison resident. He was a well-respected member of the Harrison Planning Board for eight years, serving six of those years as chairman. Joe joined the Town Council in 2002 and was a valued member for 14 years. In 2015, he was elected town justice and served with distinction until his untimely death in 2016. Joe was a wonderful role model and I am so glad that his many years of service to our community were acknowledged in this way.

Recently, the Jewish Community Center of Harrison organized their annual food drive. During Yom Kippur, the JCC collected more than 150 bags of food for donation to the Harrison Food Pantry. Nina Marraccini, Harrison’s director of Community Services, Councilwoman Marlane Amelio and I received the donated food on behalf of the pantry. The JCC’s rabbi, Eytan Hammerman, urged the congregation that, as they skip meals on Yom Kippur, they should think of those who are hungry and most in need.

The Yom Kippur food drive was designed to provide, through donations, what the congregation might have consumed during the 25-hour fast day of Yom Kippur.

For many families, a serious de-

cline in financial stability can mean hunger. All towns have members who struggle during hard times, and the good will of the JCC will help curb hunger in our community. Their contribution will provide the basic sustenance that some or our senior citizens, children and working families require. I would like to thank Rabbi Hammerman and the JCC of Harrison for this very significant contribution. For more information on our Food Pantry, please contact Nina Marraccini at 670-3026.

This year’s National Fire Protection Week was Oct. 8-14. I would like to take this time to remind residents of the following important fire safety tips: Test your smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries at least once a year; If you hear a fire alarm or smell smoke, exit the building immediately and do not return to retrieve valuables; If approaching a closed door, test the door before you open it as flames could be on the other side; If a room is smokefilled, crawl to safety on your hands and knees below the smoke line; If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop to the floor and roll; Develop a family escape plan and review it twice a year making sure that windows and doors can easily be opened; Choose a family meeting place that is safely away from your home.

By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor On Friday, Oct. 13, the Harrison Huskies ended a five-year drought, topping Byram Hills 28-20 in the Class A qualifying round to earn the program’s first postseason win since 2012. With a second-round game looming against No. 2-seeded Lourdes, however, the Huskies will need to stay sharp if they hope to keep their sectional title hopes alive.

The Huskies rode a terrific performance from junior running back D’Andre Cosby, who rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries to stake Harrison to a 21-6 first-half lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Although the Bobcats stacked the box in an effort to combat the junior’s effectiveness, the hard-running Cosby was still able to plow

through the Byram defense, helping the Huskies to consistently move the chains all night long.

“It feels really great, we were running a lot of power because we’re confident in our offensive line,” Cosby said. “They started to guess the plays, but coach told us never to give up and play so I didn’t and that ended up working out.”

“We knew we wanted to put it in Cosby’s hands, and he did a fantastic job,” Zanot said. “Over the last few weeks we’ve been working on having most of our guys play just one way, so he didn’t line up a lot on defense Brian Newsome tries to break a tackle on Oct. 13. Defensively, Harrison had its hands full with Byram quarterback Brett Stafford, who threw for three touchdowns, but was unable to put his team in the end zone with the ball on the Huskies’ 20-yard line and 10 seconds remaining in the game. Good Harrison coverage downfield forced two incomplete passes to preserve the win for the home team.

“We just knew we had to make a stop,” said defensive tackle Zach Jones, who was integral in helping the Huskies control the line of scrimmage. “We knew what we had to do and we executed.”

With the victory, the Huskies earned the right to take on Lourdes on Oct. 20. The Warriors topped Brewster 28-7 last week to improve to 6-1 on the season, and Zanot believes that his team will need to excel in all areas of the game if they hope to reach the Class A semifinals.

“We definitely need to make some adjustments and it seems like, all year, if our run game is working, then our passing game isn’t,’” Zanot said. “Tonight, our run game was definitely working, but we want to see if we can get them both going together.”
