Faculty, students, alumni, parents and community members paid tribute to Howard and Diana Nichols as they concluded their final year as president and head of school, respectively. Turn these pages to enjoy some heartwarming, humorous and inspiring sentiments shared by many about the contributions of these extraordinary leaders. Teachers Pay Surprise Tribute to Howard and Diana at Faculty Meeting school these were held quarterly — he would carefully note the phonetic pronunciation of each student’s name. To me this showed the respect Howard has for all students and their heritage.”

You may think you are retiring; however, your presence will be felt here always since every aspect of our school, from curriculum to construction, has your footprints etched permanently on them.”

The last all-school faculty meeting of the year offered some surprises for Howard and Diana Nichols. Expecting to hear news of end-of-year details, they instead found themselves at a tribute, as the honored guests! Faculty member contributions included heartfelt speeches, video clips, the sharing of old-time photos, and, in the case of John Heyes, singing a song. As each teacher spoke, a theme began to emerge, encapsulated in one word – “visionary.” Teachers, some new, some Harker veterans, paid tribute to Howard’s leadership and Diana’s vision in supporting them, their careers and their families. Some recalled their interviews and demo classes, and how impressed they were with their first experience of the administration and the students. Others recounted personal stories about the friendships they have formed and the impact the Harker community has had on their lives. Still others got some laughs by showing old pictures and recounting funny stories about some great adventures they shared with Howard and Diana. Touched by the attention, Diana joked at the end, “Now I don’t want to leave!” Here are some excerpts from some of the tributes: ■ “One of the first things that impressed me about Howard was the care he took to learn the correct pronunciation of every student’s name. For every awards ceremony — and when my children were in the elementary

■ “In my time here, I have had the privilege of seeing the school flourish in ways that Howard and Diana clearly aimed for but perhaps couldn’t have expected to achieve in such a short span. [Quoting Teddy Roosevelt], “It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man [and woman!] who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again — because there is no effort without error or shortcoming — but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause….” Howard, Diana — you not only sustained your vision but also brought it to fruition. And we are all the richer. Borrowing two words from William Faulkner’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1950, you did not just endure; you prevailed.”

I always made a point to go into Howard’s office at least once a year to express to Howard how much Susan and I appreciated the opportunity that was given to our children. About a month ago, Howard was standing in front of both Pat Walsh and me in his new home in Carmel and said to both of us, “What a ride it has been all these years, fellas!” That is exactly the way that both Pat and I feel about our years at Harker. How fortunate we have been.”

■ “I had just finished college and took what I thought was going to be a summer job with Harker Academy. Twenty-eight years later I am still here and loving it. Howard was a huge factor in my deciding to spend my career here. We didn’t have formal contracts back then, and I agreed to teach here on a handshake and Howard’s word that I would be able to raise a family here if I was willing to work hard. He has been more than good to his word, and working hard is always a little easier to do when your boss is the hardest worker in the school. When we started the upper school, one of the hardest things to adjust to when I moved to BKN was not being on the same campus with him. He’s always had an open door policy, and I loved to take advantage of it – to get advice, to bounce things off him or just to give him a little goodnatured ribbing. It has been a privilege to work with him over the years, and I’m going to miss him a lot.”

In 1993, when many schools (Harker included) were using Apple IIs and nary a teacher had a computer on the classroom desk for daily work, Diana saw a different sort of future. She saw classrooms with a computer on every teacher’s desk, clusters of computers in the room for individual or small group enrichment, and computer labs where both students could learn the ‘skills of the future’ and classroom teachers could work with computer teachers on classroom-relevant projects that counted technology among the tools at hand to get the academic job done. Roots and Wings: A Fitting Student Tribute to Howard and Diana The morning of June 3 was an emotionally touching one for the Nichols, as the entire student body gathered at 9 a.m. on Shah field (the first time K-12 has come together since the opening of the US) to pay tribute to them in a special one-hour ceremony. Each grade expressed poignant messages of appreciation, affection and gratitude, each eloquent and perfect in its own way. Recent alumnae Maheen Kaleem (’03) and Maya Hey (’04) helped host the event, and the morning ended with the entire student body singing the Harker school song to Howard and Diana.

The kids always thought of Howard as just the head of the school, so they were always surprised to see what a good athlete he is. • Gr. 3 – Students sang “When You Wish Upon a Star” • Gr. 4 – In honor of their support of the dance program, students asked the Nichols to dance a last dance with them, to the pop song “Celebrate” • Gr. 5 – Presented individually written essays on the subject, “What Harker Means to Me.” • Gr. 6 – Students sang “I Believe I Can Fly” • MS – Student speech, performance by Harmonics, who sang “The Gift of Who You Are,” and presentation of plaque dedicating the amphitheatre at the new MS campus to the Nichols.

• US – Short presentations from selected student speakers expressing gratitude to the Nichols for Harker’s academic excellence, athletics, performing arts, sense of community, and the presentation of an eagle statue and a beautiful student painting of Dobbins Hall.

In Their Own Words…

■ Harker can mean so many things. Harker is an emblem of pride and excellence. New students may not realize when they enter how much they will grow from their experience here. When leaving, each student will have gained self-esteem, self-control, and most importantly, an outstanding education. Now on to the real question; what does Harker mean to me? To me Harker has six meanings, one for each letter of Harker.

H A R K E R

stands for honesty. At Harker, students learn to make the right choices. Students are encouraged to make these choices with integrity.

is the simplest of all meanings - achievement. Students at Harker will gain one of the greatest educations available in the country, if not the world. At Harker, standards are high, and all children work very hard to meet that bar of excellence.

stands for respect. Students all learn to respect everybody, including ourselves. We maintain a high level of dignity, and to keep that dignity we have to respect our peers, our elders (Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Nichols) and ourselves.

is for kin. Kin means family and the Harker community feels like one big family. Like most families, we can have our arguments, but we will always care about each other.

stands for everybody. One of the main things we learn at Harker is to never exclude others. Everybody is in or no one is in.

stands for reputation. As a school, Harker has a great reputation locally and nationally. Our reputation is the reason the Harker family increases each year. All Harker students are proud to work hard to keep that reputation flying high.

Now, if you ask me what Harker means to me, I’ll tell you one thing - Great!

Harker. What a great word. What a great school. What a great community.

Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Nichols, for creating a place where honesty, achievement, and respect are fostered in a spirit of family-feeling and inclusion. Nearly 1,000 Attend Tribute Evening The evening event on Shah Field June 3 gave the nearly 1,000 parents, faculty, alumni, local dignitaries and other Harker friends in attendance a chance to pass on their best wishes and thanks to Howard and Diana.

Staffed by Harker’s catering staff and faculty volunteers, the evening included a special reception for the

• Jennifer Gargano, assistant head of school, read a letter of appreciation from Mimi Baer, the executive director of the California Association of Independent Schools.

• Harker alumnae Maheen Kaleem ’03 and Maya Hey ’04 introduced a video of highlights from the student tribute held earlier that day.

• Linda LeZotte, San Jose Council member for District 1, which includes all three Harker campuses, presented an official city commendation.

Tents were arranged around the field and themed by division, as well as for MS and US alumni, so guests could more easily unite with fellow attendees.

Howard and Diana were escorted from tent to tent to visit with everyone, and then all were seated for the formal program that began at 8:15 p.m. where the Nichols were honored with special commendations, speeches and presentations.

• Jeff Haugaard, PhD, professor of psychology at Cornell, and Harker boarding program director from 1973-1984, gave a moving tribute to Howard for his lifetime dedication to children.

• Executive Director of Advancement Joe Rosenthal, whose department was primarily responsible for organizing the event, played a special tribute video on a large screen on the exterior wall of Shah Hall.

Rosenthal then invited the Nichols to cross the stage and stand with the Harker Board of Trustees, in a symbolic gesture of their new roles at Harker. On a humorous note, incoming Head of School Chris Nikoloff was presented with an oversized pair of shoes to symbolize the

Began as full time employee of Palo Alto Private School, Inc. (PAMA and The Harker Day School) as Assistant Commandant, P.E. Teacher, Athletic Director, and Jr. High Coach.

1968-73 Assistant Superintendent, Palo Alto Private Schools, Inc. 1972

Merged both schools and moved them from Palo Alto to current STG campus.

1973-91 Headmaster, Harker Academy 1976

Built the swimmning pool and tennis courts on the STG campus and developed the Donald L. Nichols Sports Complex which included the above, plus what is now the Dobb ins (Rosenthal) athletic field.

1979

Phased out optional military program and greatly expanded extra-curricular offerings to students. Dropped ninth grade to make the school K-8.

1987

Harker Board formally commends Howard for his excellent judgment, thoughtfuness, and enthusiasm for the school over the years.

Organized efforts to earn first CAIS accreditation of the school.

Named President, The Harker School

Changed school name from Harker Academy to The Harker School; announces first-ever 5-Phase Capital Campaign, Expansion Program. Phase One results in kindergarten facility (groundbreaking Fall 1992).

Led campaign to build Dobbins Hall

Together Howard and Diana Nichols planned and implemented the founding of the Upper School, which included a faculty trip to East Coast prep schools to benchmark best practices.

The Nichols received a variety of fun and symbolic gifts - such as a lifetime pass to all Harker performances - and the Nichols surprised Chris Nikoloff with a cape and crown to annoint him as the new head of school. The caveat? He must wear it on the first day of school
