The Party Scene It is Christmas Eve at the Silberhaus home, a large and grand house with the most beautiful Christmas tree imaginable. The Silberhaus' are hosting their annual Christmas party, welcoming the arrival of their family and friends. The children, Clara and Fritz, are dancing and playing as they also welcome their friends. The party grows festive with music and dance as Godfather Drosselmeyer arrives. He is a skilled clock and toy maker and always full of surprises. Drosselmeyer draws everyone’s attention as he presents two life-size dolls. They are the delight of the party, each taking a turn to dance. The children receive gifts and Drosselmeyer gives Clara a beautiful Nutcracker that becomes the hit of the party. Fritz becomes jealous and grabs the Nutcracker from Clara and promptly breaks it. Clara is heartbroken and looks on as Drosselmeyer quickly repairs the Nutcracker with a handkerchief he magically draws from the air. As the evening grows late, the guests depart and the Silberhaus family retires for the evening. Clara, worried about her beloved Nutcracker, sneaks back downstairs and falls asleep with him in her arms.

The Fight Scene As the clock strikes midnight, strange things begin to happen. Clara begins shrinking as her beautiful Christmas tree grows high above her. The room fills with an army of mice, led by the fierce Rat Queen. The Nutcracker awakens, and leads his army of toy soldiers into battle with the mice. The Rat Queen corners the Nutcracker and battles him one-on-one. The Nutcracker seems to be no match for the Rat Queen. Clara, horrified, makes a final, daring effort to wrestle away the Rat Queen’s sword, but the Nutcracker intercedes and impales the Rat Queen. She drops to the floor and the mice run away, carrying their leader’s lifeless body.

The Land of Snow The Nutcracker turns into a Prince and takes Clara on a journey to the Land of Snow, an enchanted forest wonderland where they are welcomed by the Snow Queen, Snow King and dancing snowflakes.

The Land of Sweets The Prince escorts Clara to the Land of Sweets, where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The Prince tells the Sugar Plum Fairy about the daring battle with the army of mice. They are rewarded with a celebration of dances from around the world. As a finale, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier dance a beautiful Pas de deux.

The Dream Ends

Clara awakens from her dream and finds herself back at home with her beloved Nutcracker.

JENNIFER AGBAY | Artistic Director

Who's Who in The Nutcracker JENNIFER AGBAY (Artistic Director) is the Director of Dance at THTC. She received her early dance training at The Performing Arts School of Worcester, studying under Directors Shirley Benjamin, Wayne Stuart, and the late Kevin Milam. Jennifer received a Bachelor of Science from New York University. While at NYU, Jennifer studied under Christine Spizzo, Mireille Briane, Oleg Briansky, Colin Connors, Douglas Dunn and Cynthia Rowan.

Her professional repertoire includes performing with “Ballet for Young Audiences,” and The Washington Square Repertory Dance Company.

From 2001-2003, Jennifer served on faculty at the Boston Ballet School.

From 2003-2005, Jennifer was Artistic Director for the Performing Arts School of Worcester. In 2006, Jennifer founded Ballet Arts Worcester to provide students formal training in classical ballet. In 2017 BAW merged with The Hanover Theatre Conservatory. Jennifer continues to act as artistic director and/or choreographer for the conservatory.

A fun fact, Jennifer is a two-time "Tamy" awards winner for Best Choreographer for high school musical productions. She is also a certified, trained instructor in Progressing Ballet Technique.

PAIGE DOKU (Arabian Princess) is a dance artist originally from Leicester, Massachusetts. She received her foundational training at The Hanover Theatre Conservatory, where she studied classical ballet, modern and contemporary. Doku proceeded to attend the Boston Conservatory at Berklee where she graduated with a BFA in contemporary dance performance in 2023. Along with her collegiate studies, Paige simultaneously trained with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company in Israel. She has danced and performed on stages abroad in Germany and Italy and Israel. Doku has performed works by

Kate Weare, Victor Quijada, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, Mats Ek and Rami Be’er, among others. Most recently she has been working and performing in New York City with Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup.

TEDDY GRILLO (Nutcracker Prince) started his dance training at a local dance studio before training at Ballet Arts Worcester, under the direction of Jennifer Agbay. From there on, his main focus was Ballet, Contemporary, and Modern. Teddy has placed 2nd and 3rd place in the Junior Age Division men category of The Youth American Grand Prix and has attended the finals for group ensembles and a contemporary pas de deux in Tampa Florida. Teddy was the first conservatory student to perform a professional role in The Nutcracker when he was a high school senior at 18 yrs. old. Teddy is currently a sophomore in college at The University of Hartford, majoring in Physical Therapy with a minor in Dance.

MARK A. HAROOTIAN (Drosselmeyer, Mother Ginger) is a native of Worcester, Massachusetts. Harootian received his early dance training at the Performing Arts School of Worcester. His main training was in classical ballet, but also had extensive training in Modern, Jazz and Musical Theater. He attended the University of Utah, became a member of Utah Ballet and received his B.F.A. in ballet in 2004. From 2004-2012, Harootian performed a variety of works with Festival Ballet Providence as a company dancer and choreographed many premiered works at FBP and several other regional dance companies and universities. Harootian was a guest artist for Hong Kong’s Academy for The Performing Arts, Orange County School of the Arts and an adjunct professor at Chapman University. He also taught at California School of the Arts-San Gabriel Valley and Pasadena Dance Theater. Harootian obtained his M.F.A. in dance from Montclair State University in 2020 and is currently an adjunct professor at Salve Regina University and Dean College. continued

Who's Who in The Nutcracker NOAH PARETS (Cavalier) was born and raised in Boston and moved to Toronto in 2018 to begin his professional ballet career with the National Ballet of Canada as an apprentice. He was promoted to the corps de ballet in 2020 and to second soloist in 2021. Recently, Noah made his debut as Mad Hatter in Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Amour in Carlos Acosta’s Don Quixote and the Principal Couple in George Balanchine’s Rubies. His repertoire includes Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet, Benno in Swan Lake as well as roles in The Nutcracker, Giselle, Onegin, MADDADDAM, Etudes, Chroma, Angels’ Atlas, Symphony in C, Diamonds, Suite en Blanc, Elite Syncopations, and more. Representing the company, Noah competed in the International Competition for the Erik Bruhn Prize. Also, Noah has performed with the National Ballet of Canada on world stages such as The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London and New York City Center.

Prior to joining the National Ballet of Canada, Noah was a student at Boston Ballet School under the guidance of Margaret Tracey and Peter Stark. Noah regularly appeared in Boston Ballet productions at the Boston Opera House including The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and Next Generation. Additionally, at 12 years old, Noah was cast as Billy Elliot in the National Broadway Tour of Billy Elliot the Musical, appearing as the title character in 40 cities across the US and Canada. Noah is thrilled to return to his home state and perform at The Hanover Theatre!

RACHELE PERLA (Dew Drop Fairy) is a professional freelance dancer based in New York City. She is a company artist with New Chamber Ballet, under the direction of Miro Magloire, and trained with master teacher, Wilhelm Burmann.

Rachele is an alumna of The Hanover Theatre Conservatory, The Youth

Ballet of Worcester and of the PreProfessional Program at the Boston Ballet School. She graduated cum laude from Fordham University with a BFA in Dance from The Ailey School. Rachele has trained and performed internationally.

HALE PULSIFER (Herr Silberhaus) This is Hale’s second year with the Nutcracker cast, and his first year as Herr Silberhaus. His daughter Emily’s commitment to the Ballet and to The Hanover Theatre drove him to volunteer for a year before auditioning to be a party parent in last year’s show. Hale is thrilled to support Emily’s favorite activity! By day Hale is a Vice President of Customer Inclusion at Fidelity Investments. His previous stage experience includes a decade of touring nationally as a drummer for major label recording artist Angry Salad in the 1990’s.

ANERIZ RE (Snow Queen) is currently living in New York City, but originally from São Paulo, Brazil.

This is Aneriz’s third season with Connecticut Ballet, she has also performed with New York Theatre Ballet, Ballet Papillon, American Repertory Ballet, Cleveland Ballet and Cisne Negro Companhia de dança - Brazil. Her training is marked

by Princeton Ballet School, School of Cleveland Ballet, RAD Royal Academy of Dance Examinations and others. Her favorite performances include the full length of Coppélia with Connecticut Ballet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream choreographed by Ethan Stiefel, Cinderella with New York Theatre Ballet, “Zulma” at the ballet, “Giselle” and “Sugar Plum Fairy” both for Princeton Ballet School, the Arabian Dance at The Nutcracker with Cleveland Ballet and many more.

MIA STEEDLE (Sugar Plum Fairy) is from Boston, MA where she trained at Boston Ballet School before joining Boston Ballet II. She has since danced with Kansas City Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, and as a freelance artist. As a freelance dancer, she performed with Moving Arts in works

by Stephanie Martinez, Gabriel Lorena, and Christian Denise and with Owen/Cox Dance Group in works by Norbert De La Cruz III and Jennifer Owen. Mia is an alumni of the Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Ballet Program where she was choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Jennifer Archibald for the 90th Anniversary Gala. She has spent many summers at Chautauqua Institution working with Patricia McBride where she performed in George Balanchine’s Rubies, Raymonda Variations, and more.

Some of her other repertoire includes Christopher Wheeldon’s This Bitter Earth, Michael Pink’s Dracula, Septime Webre’s The Wizard of Oz, ALICE (in wonderland) and Gerald Arpino’s Confetti.

ANA LUISA THOMPSON (Frau Silberhaus, Ballet Mistress) is a native of Brazil, Thompson-graduated from the Maria Olenewa School of Dance, the official School of the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro. While there, she performed in Coppelia and La Sylphide with the company. She also danced with Companhia de Danca Rio. Thompson completed the David Howard Teacher’s Seminar in 2000.

She served on the faculty at PASOW from 1998-2004. She served as ballet

mistress for Ballet Arts Worcester from 2005-2017. She choreographed for the Worcester Youth Ballet Company and PASOW’s The Nutcracker. Thompson has performed in numerous productions of The Nutcracker; including the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy, Snow Queen, Arabian Princess and Spanish Soloist.

She is now a faculty member and ballet mistress at THTC. Thompson is a licensed Zumba instructor and certified as a Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) teacher.

NICK JOYCE (Sound Design) has a four-decade long career in audio that spans the globe as a touring house mixer/monitor engineer/production manager for such artists as Miles Davis, Doctor John, Joe Satriani, Donna Summer and John Scofield. In addition to his touring repertoire, add such special events as the 1990 Earth Day in Central Park (to an estimated audience over 750,000), the rededication of The Statue of Liberty (with the Boston Pops, July 4, 1986 at Liberty State Park in NJ), numerous studio recordings, sporting events and five seasons at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee School of Music as audio designer and mixer for their musical theatre program. He brings his in depth knowledge and expertise of all aspects of audio to The Hanover Theatre Conservatory while starting his 13th year with The Hanover Theatre as the Head of Audio. He is the audio designer and mixer annually for A Christmas Carol and the Youth Summer Programs.

ERIC CULVER (Conductor) studied at the Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory and Catholic University. His teachers included Vincent Lenti (piano), Richard Pittman (conducting) and Robert Cogan (composition). He has been active as composer and conductor in New York City, Boston, Arlington, VA, Washington, D.C., Ramallah, West Bank, and Guatemala City. He is currently Conducting Consultant with the Concord Orchestra. For several summers he was Resident Composer at the Redfeather Theatre Company at Green Hill Park, wrote incidental music for Lope de Vega’s Fuente Ovejuna and a full score for Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle.

KIMBERLY PHEYMANNICIE (Youth Ballet Stage Manager) is a trained theatre technician and stage manager from the Boston area. She has worked on numerous productions and concerts with the Greater Boston Stage Company, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company and Reagle Theatre as a stage manager. She has worked with theatre educational programs at The Hanover Theatre Conservatory, the Greater Boston Stage Company and Groton School as a production manager and stage management mentor, and has taught workshops in lighting, makeup, and design. Kim received her Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology with a concentration in Technical Theatre from Fitchburg State University and a Master of Arts in Theatre Education from Emerson College. She is a MA certified teacher and has taught STEM and STEAM to grades K-12. She currently works at The Hanover Theatre Conservatory as the School Programs Manager and Youth Ballet Stage Manager. Kim is thrilled to be back for her 8th year as stage manager for this production!

Broadway Designers Transform The Nutcracker The Hanover Theatre Conservatory’s annual production of The Nutcracker has undergone a major transformation with the help of internationally recognized Broadway designers Christine Peters and Paul Miller.

When Ballet Arts Worcester became part of the conservatory and The Nutcracker became a conservatory production, redesigning the show was an early discussion. Jennifer Agbay, the conservatory’s director of dance and the artistic director of The Nutcracker, always envisioned the show as a pop-up book come to life onstage.

When the national tour of ELF the Musical came to the theatre, the show’s inspired design caught the attention of the theatre’s staff. We found that the set of ELF had a similar pop-up and whimsical quality to what Agbay imagined for The Nutcracker. After reaching out to Peters in early 2019 and officially bringing her on board, the redesign was set in motion.

Peters is an accomplished scenic designer most well-known for her work on ELF the Musical, although she has also worked on numerous other Broadway shows including Miss Saigon, The Book of Mormon, Newsies, The Addams Family and Bonnie and Clyde. Her national tour credits include Aladdin, Dirty Dancing, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Wizard of Oz, The Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, Les Misérables and Beauty and the Beast.

This production of The Nutcracker features a lighting design by Paul Miller, who collaborated with Peters on ELF the Musical. His Broadway

work includes Amazing Grace, The Illusionists, Legally Blonde, Freshly Squeezed, Laughing Room Only and other Off-Broadway and national touring productions. Miller’s lighting projects include every internationally televised live performance during the New Year’s Eve celebration in New York’s Times Square for over 20 years.

When approached with the project, Peters was excited at the possibility of making this magical world come to life on The Hanover Theatre’s stage.

“Before The Nutcracker was one of the most famous ballets, it was a children’s book. We wanted to go back to its roots, which felt like a very good fit especially for a production with so many children involved. The large illustrative quality of a pop-up book come to life gives a nod to the original story while adding a sense of whimsy and imagination as the characters travel to the different fantasy lands,” said Peters.

For Agbay, the project fulfilled a longstanding wish. “Finally after so many years, my dreams of designing the production from scratch are coming true!” she said. “After speaking with several designers, no one understood my artistic ideas more than Christine Peters. Right from the start, she was on the same page about my needs for magic and whimsy. Her designs emulate my vision of a real-life pop-up book with childlike charm, but not in a cartoonish way. She shared my desire to make these designs enthralling so that children and adults alike will be transported into Clara’s magical world to take part in her voyage while experiencing their own special journey through this timeless story.”

We are excited to host The Nutcracker for you and to share our unique set design. As one of the theatre’s annual holiday productions, we are thrilled this design will delight audiences for years to come. “This production provides so much to the city of Worcester and takes us on a sweet adventure, reminding us of the power of magic,” says Agbay.

THEATRE POLICIES & OTHER HELPFUL INFORMATION The following is presented to inform our patrons and to maintain an orderly theatrical environment and experience. These policies notwithstanding, management will always strive to be fair, ethical and understanding of our patrons’ needs.

Accessible Seating and ADA Provisions: The Hanover Theatre is committed to providing access and an enjoyable visit for persons of different abilities. Spaces are reserved for patrons who use wheelchairs and for their ambulatory companions. When purchasing tickets, please be sure to mention if any special accommodations are required, including low vision, hard of hearing, limited mobility, etc.

Assistive Listening Devices: Devices are available. Please inquire at the box office or ask an usher. These cannot be reserved in advance, but the number of devices available should be sufficient for the usual demand. You will be asked to leave your driver’s license as a deposit.

Booking Protect: Protect your investment by participating in Booking Protect, a ticket insurance option. You can choose to select Booking Protect as an add-on before finalizing your transaction. Booking Protect is only available at the time of purchase and allows you to receive a full refund of the purchase price should you or anyone in your party be unable to attend due to injury, illness, adverse weather conditions and more.

Box Office Hours of Operation: (in person and by telephone) Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm, and Sunday (if there is a performance), noon or two hours prior to curtain, whichever is earlier. So that we may best serve patrons attending each event, please avoid visiting the box office to purchase tickets to future events during the hour prior to curtain time. Tickets may be purchased online 24/7 at TheHanoverTheatre.org or call the ticket office at 877.571.7469 during standard hours of operation.

E-mail: boxoffice@thehanovertheatre.org Cameras (Recording Devices): Our standard policy is that all such devices are prohibited from use in the theatre, and offenders may be ejected without compensation. All members of the press or media must receive advance authorization from the PR dept. (PR@ thehanovertheatre.org) to use cameras or recording devices inside the theatre and must display identification upon arrival.

Cell Phones: Out of respect to the performers and to fellow audience members, please remember to silence all cell phones while in the theatre. Also please note, there is no telephone which is manned throughout the performance. Please be sure to leave your cell number with anyone who may need to reach you during an emergency, and in the event of an emergency please take your call in the lobby.

Children: All patrons MUST have a valid ticket. Parents are discouraged from bringing children under five years of age to performances which are not specifically oriented to children.

Parents must remove any disruptive children from the theatre into the lobby. For these reasons, and for the comfort of all audience members, please consider carefully whether it is appropriate for you to bring children under five to the theatre.

Concessions: Please do not bring outside food and drinks to the

theatre. Snacks and beverages are available for sale in the lobby.

First Aid: Please speak with the house manager or any of the ushers if you need first aid or have any sort of accident or medical emergency. Insurance regulations require that such instances be documented immediately.

Gift Certificates: These are available in any denomination and are available online, by calling or visiting the box office and may be used by the recipient in full or partial payment for event tickets or conservatory classes.

Groups: Attending the theatre is even more fun when you bring a group. Groups of 10 or more may be eligible for a discount. For information, contact Amy Osborn at 508.471.1689.

Inclement Weather Policy: It is generally impossible for touring shows and performances to be rescheduled, so we do not cancel events due to inclement weather. As with other touring performances and sporting events, we are unable to refund tickets.

In extreme weather conditions we will do our best to exchange subscriber tickets to an alternate performance, if applicable. The theatre strongly recommends that you add on ticket insurance at the time of ticket purchase through Booking Protect to protect your purchase.

Lost and Found: Management is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Items found at the theatre will be held by the house manager. If you have lost an item, please contact the box office as soon as possible to make a report. You will then be contacted if the item has been found. Retrieval of the item is the responsibility of the customer. Items not claimed within 30 days will be donated or disposed of without compensation.

Prohibited items and activities which are prohibited include (but are not limited to): Smoking, weapons, outside food or drinks, camera or recording devices, laser pointers, disruptive or abusive language, pets (except those assisting persons with disabilities) and persons exhibiting intoxication or drug use. Offenders may be removed from the theatre without compensation.

Resale of Tickets for Profit: Ticket holders may on occasion be in a position where they have purchased tickets that they later cannot personally use and will want to donate, give, trade or sell these tickets to friends or acquaintances. Management does not discourage private transactions of this nature. However, we may take appropriate actions to thwart the organized resale of tickets for profit by third parties, which we do not condone. The public is advised to be careful purchasing tickets from individuals they do not know personally, as such tickets may be void and in such cases admission to the theatre will be denied without compensation.

Standing Room: All persons entering the theatre must have a valid ticket, and are not allowed to stand in the back or aisles.

Ushers: The Hanover Theatre has a dedicated and trained force of volunteer ushers that seat and assist our guests. If you would like to volunteer, please email volunteer@thehanovertheatre.org.

We offer ASL and audio description services at specific performances during our season.

We offer wheelchair accessibility at all shows.

• Please remove your hat so that patrons behind you can see.

• Please limit heavy perfumes or colognes; others around you may be allergic.

• If you must leave your seat during a performance, please do so as quietly as possible.

• Please be kind and stay until after the cast bows. The performers work extremely hard to give the public an enjoyable show. It would be greatly appreciated if you share your enthusiasm.

• If any problem should arise and you would like to speak with a theatre representative, please ask your usher for immediate assistance or see a House Manager in the main lobby.
