Welcome Dear Friends,

It’s always a challenge to encapsulate in an annual report all that we’ve accomplished over the past year. The theatre continued to grow as an organization in 2016-2017, and reached more people in more ways than ever before. Here are a few of the highlights: At the top of the list was the January opening of The Hanover Theatre Conservatory for the Performing Arts with 25 classes in acting, music, dance, technical theatre and design for all ages. We partnered with Ballet Arts Worcester to bring their top-notch programs under our umbrella and we finished the spring semester with 180 students. As of the date of this writing, we have more than 200 students registered for more than 60 fall classes. Since its inception in 2009, the theatre’s Youth Summer Program has engaged more than 600 young people in classes, rehearsals and performances to build their self-expression, confidence and teamwork. With the opening of the new conservatory, we can create a much bigger impact by reaching our whole community year-round.

We redesigned our Franklin Square Salon and Bridge, resulting in a larger and more comfortable space for our Franklin Square Society members.

We entered a new public phase of our Theatre District Campaign to raise funds to program and vitalize the new Francis R. Carroll Plaza, with construction scheduled to begin in 2018. This new phase seeks to increase engagement throughout the district in collaboration with key stakeholders. As of October 26, we have secured more than $7.6 million toward our $10 million goal.

We began using the McDonough and Curtis rooms, our new function spaces in the 551 Main Street building, for events ranging from pretheatre wine and cheese receptions, to corporate trainings and fundraising events for nonprofit organizations and alumni associations.

The new spaces have been popular and very successful, enabling us to accommodate events we had previously been forced to turn away due to lack of space and amenities.

And 2016-2017 was our most financially successful year to date. More than 214,000 patrons attended 231 performances and special events. Over 12,000 students attended A Christmas Carol and other morning matinee performances, 2,400 Worcester Public Schools students participated in our AdoptA-School program at Kinky Boots and Motown the Musical. We ended the year with a surplus and were able to put $300,000 into capital reserves, allowing us to complete the ongoing maintenance and repairs that our beautiful historic venue will require.

The year ahead promises to be a momentous one, as we’ll celebrate our 10th anniversary in March 2018. We will see the start of construction on the Francis R. Carroll Plaza, the broad-based public phase of the Theatre District Campaign. Our conservatory will continue to grow and evolve, and we expect an exciting Broadway season announcement in the spring. We look forward to celebrating each new milestone with you as it comes, and we are so grateful to you for your ongoing commitment to the theatre’s success.

- Daniel Murphy, conservatory student Our new conservatory’s education and outreach programs represent the core of The Hanover Theatre’s mission to foster a love and appreciation for the performing arts in audiences of today and tomorrow. We believe education is a lifelong pursuit, and therefore strive to provide accessible experiences for a diverse population of all ages.

The Hanover Theatre’s new conservatory is bringing arts education back to downtown Worcester with over 200 students of all ages attending classes six nights a week.

At The Hanover Theatre Conservatory for the Performing Arts, we strive to cultivate individual attention, ignite creativity and inspire confidence.

The arts play a vital role in helping individuals develop self-esteem, compassion and problem solving skills. Students who study or participate in the arts have proven academic success. They find their voice and discover new avenues for creative expression. It is our goal to maximize a student’s social and emotional development while introducing them to theatre, dance, music and design. In addition, access to state-of-the-art equipment and hands-on training with industry professionals in our world-class venue allows students to gain real-world experience in the performing arts field.

In our inaugural semester this past January, we were thrilled to welcome so many talented students into our new space. The conservatory was buzzing with 180 actors, dancers, musicians and designers of all ages and abilities.

We taught those as young as two months old and were inspired by our adult students who brought up to 72 years of wisdom and experience to the classroom.

In addition to our theatre, music and design offerings, we were eager to expand our dance offerings this past spring. Ballet Arts Worcester joined the conservatory and brought their students, experienced faculty and disciplined training into the space just two months after we opened. With continued demand and the quick growth of the conservatory, we added two studios to the space this summer. The additional space allowed us to host over 150 students for our Youth Summer Programs in 2017. Now with the fall upon us, we’ve increased our capacity to accommodate over 200 students in 62 different courses! We cannot wait to see where this new venture takes us.

Connect and Enrich Our ever-popular Youth Summer Program (YSP), now offering experiences for students ages 6-8, 9-12 and 1318 served 150 students from central Massachusetts and beyond, offering them intensive training in a professional venue. In addition, our summer programs allowed us to offer 18 internships in arts education and theatre production.

Through the Access to the Arts Fund, we are proud to offer scholarships to those students who would otherwise be unable to participate. The fund also allows us to offer internships to area college students pursuing careers in the performing arts.

This summer, 18 interns were able to work with a professional staff and creative team, building their resume and experience in an atmosphere that prioritizes education.

We are so pleased with how this program has grown over the last nine years, and we were thrilled to receive the new Bay State Parent Magazine “Best Theatre Program/ Camp” award this year.

Our Student Critic Program celebrated its eighth year and we are taking advantage of our new conservatory to revamp the program in the 2017-2018 season as a professional development opportunity for our students on a pre-professional track. We also continued our partnership with the Goddard Scholars Program at Sullivan Middle School offering them in-school visits from actors like Jeremy Lawrence of A Christmas Carol and on-site workshops in our new conservatory.

In the 2016-2017 season, we entered our fourth year of the beloved AdoptA-School program, and took a big leap by adding a second school to our annual program and increasing our impact to 2,400 students. The Hanover Theatre partnered with the national tour of Motown the Musical to expand our program to a second Worcester public school. Burncoat High School, the city’s arts magnet school, has a student population of 1,000 individuals, many of whom are economically disadvantaged and experienced live theatre for the very first time through this initiative.

Motown the Musical presented the perfect opportunity for us to collaborate with school administrators and teachers on this curriculum-based arts integration program. Over a period of three weeks, all Burncoat High School students participated in lessons within every subject that incorporated Motown the Musical’s themes, historical and sociological elements, artistic aspects and musical score.

Students in the performing arts department trained to perform a musical number from the show. Dance captains from the national tour made a visit to the school to offer coaching to the students.

During the finale of the Wednesday night performance, students performed this choreography in the aisles. Cast members from the show visited the school, spoke with the students and saw the amazing work happening in classrooms in

preparation for the show. In addition, the cast ran their own food drive and donated hundreds of pounds of food to the Burncoat Food Bank before heading out to their next city.

Our continued partnership with South High School was just as rewarding this past December when we were fortunate enough to offer our first weekday matinee of a Broadway show with Kinky Boots. The students and faculty at South have come to count on this annual event as a way to instill pride in their students and come together as a community. The cast and crew from the tour were amazing to work with; visiting the school, rehearsing with the students and even helping with a winter boot drive for the school’s clothing donation center, “Andy’s Attic.” Superintendent and theatre board member, Maureen Binienda, convinced Durham Bus Company to donate all 18 buses to transport the students to and from the theatre during the school day.

We are extremely proud of this program and the impact it has made on WPS students over the last four years.

When we started the program in 2013, only 28% of South High’s population had seen a Broadway show and today, 98% of students are seeing a show on an annual basis. In addition, 85% of students feel that art can inspire change, up from 45% before the program.

Lastly, only 23% were initially interested in having the arts integrated into the curriculum and now 78% of students consider it an enhancement to the everyday classroom experience. We feel there is no better way to fulfill our mission than to foster a love and appreciation for the performing arts in audiences of today and tomorrow.

The Access to the Arts (ATTA) Fund continues to be a vital source of support for community outreach programs, providing access to the performing arts to youth and families who cannot afford to participate.

The Theatre District Campaign reached an important milestone this past year with the completion of two key campaign priorities.

Funds in the amount of $6,685,933 were raised to complete the construction at 551 Main Street and fully activate The Hanover Theatre Conservatory for the Performing Arts. In addition, administrative offices and two function rooms have been in operation since August 2016.

The campaign began to focus on raising the funds needed to complete remaining priorities, which include district enhancement, the redesign of Francis R. Carroll Plaza, and district programming in partnership with other cultural organizations to create an 18-hour-a-day destination.

Several events were held in March to inform business partners and leadership donors about the goals of the campaign. Special guest speakers for those events, Congressman James McGovern and City Manager Ed Augustus, expressed full support of the campaign’s vision for revitalization of downtown Worcester.

he Hanover Theatre’s staff and volunteers have been instrumental in helping the Carroll Plaza design team understand the operational needs of the theatre and its neighbors, and their participation in the design process will help achieve the goals of remaking Carroll Plaza into a public space that will be interesting, inviting and actively used.

From a community perspective, the theatre continued to play a leadership role in the Theatre District Alliance, in partnership with Worcester Business Development Corporation, bringing district stakeholders to the table to address mutual areas of concern such as safety, cleanliness and connectivity. A Theatre District branding campaign was launched and there was enhanced coordination for special events among alliance members.

In addition, the Alliance’s advocacy committee began to lay the groundwork for the creation of a Business Improvement District.

The 1926 Society

On April 20 the theatre hosted its annual 1926 Society Luncheon which welcomed approximately 40 individuals who attended to learn about the benefits of joining the Society and listen to a presentation about Johnny “Dee” DiBenedetto, who was the iconic manager of the Loew’s Poli Palace for 37 years. Pictured in photos to the right.

WICN Founder Brian Barlow interviewed Johnny Dee’s daughter Diane Cotter, who shared heartfelt recollections of her father and his love for the theatre he managed for over three decades. The audience heard personal stories of celebrities who visited the theatre for movie premieres during the heyday of the movie star era.

We will remember Carol Singh, a yearly Franklin Square Society member. Carol, along with her husband Dr. Jang Singh, was an enthusiastic supporter and advocate of the theatre and she was often seen at many of the shows celebrating a night out with family and friends.

We will miss Beverly Doubleday, a longtime supporter of the theatre and yearly Franklin Square Society member. Beverly along with her husband John “Skip” Doubleday, was often seen with a large group of family and friends enjoying the theatre that meant so much to her.

Outstanding Service Our volunteers play an integral role as part of the front-of-house team during shows and performances, as well as provide invaluable ongoing support to the theatre’s administrative departments. In addition, a special group of volunteers selflessly devote their time and energy to planting, weeding, watering and maintaining the Francis R. Carroll Plaza to ensure patrons and the community may enjoy a beautiful park directly across from the theatre. At today’s Massachusetts volunteer equivalency rate, our volunteers have donated over $6 million of in-kind services, or 200,929 hours of service, to our nonprofit organization since 2008.

Congratulations to H. Carter Hunt Volunteers of the Year Richard and Linda Adams We are pleased to recognize both Richard (Dick) and Linda Adams for their outstanding contributions to The Hanover Theatre’s volunteer program. Volunteers since the fall of 2008, Dick and Linda are very humble, claiming to be just “regular folks.” But we know that they are so much more! In addition to a full schedule of theatre events, the Adams also volunteer in the conservatory and administrative offices in a variety of ways.

As a team leader for all of our administrative volunteers, Linda continuously coordinates between her team of volunteers and the theatre’s administrative staff to assist with mailings and other office tasks. Plus, Dick comes to the theatre every Monday to sort, organize and stack bottles from the weekend’s performances so that the theatre is able to recycle them and save money. Their willingness to roll up their sleeves to complete some of the unglamorous tasks that need to be done is a testament to their dedication to service.

The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ Team

provides exemplary service in maintaining the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, a treasured musical instrument. Organist Len Beyersdorfer shares his talent during pre-show concerts, tours and theatre tours. Don Phipps, Bruce Hager and John Phipps take excellent care of the organ, so it always sounds its best, especially during our silent movies and our annual production of A Christmas Carol.

Before volunteering with the theatre, Dick worked in various Insurance institutions for over 40 years. He started at Paul Revere Life Insurance in Worcester and then went to Boston Mutual Life Insurance Company in Canton, MA. In addition to volunteering at the theatre, Dick devotes many hours to the driving duties that come along with being a grandparent. Linda worked as a nurse for 35 years; her last job was at Fallon Clinic in pediatric urgent care and primary nursing.

Linda also volunteered at St. Vincent’s Hospital and at their children’s schools.

Both Dick and Linda Adams are tremendous assets to the theatre and always go above and beyond to help with anything. We are incredibly grateful to have such dedicated individuals on our team. They truly exemplify the admirable qualities demonstrated by our outstanding group of volunteers.
