More than Just a Hammock
ThePawleys Island Hammocks story goes back to the Carolina Low Country more than 130 years ago. Joshua John “Cap’n Josh” Ward, a river boat captain, simply wanted a good night’s sleep during the sultry summers. He set out with some rope, wood, a little gumption and grit and soon fashioned what would become the basis for our company—the rope hammock—a hand woven bed, two wooden spreader bars, a clew knot with a ring for hanging the hammock. Pretty simple when you think about it.
Since those by-gone days of Cap’n John, we have continued to expand our collections and improve on the materials we use. In addition to our classic cotton rope hammocks, we offer rope swings, chairs and hammocks made with all-weather cottony-soft DuraCord® rope and Sunbrella® Fabric.
Since the Carolina Low Country is about sitting-a-spell, dropping in on neighbors and sharing a meal with friends and family, we also carry all-weather, sustainable HDPE “better-than-wood” furniture. Virtually maintenance free and easy to clean, our outdoor furniture will never rot, splinter, or need to be painted. Hammocks
Caring for the Rope
It’s surprisingly easy! Wash the rope using warm, soapy water and a soft-bristled scrub brush; a mild liquid detergent will do the trick nicely. Spread the hammock on a deck or concrete surface and soak it thoroughly with a garden hose, then pour on some soapy water and scrub away! Be sure to rinse everything thoroughly before allowing the hammock to dry. If the rope is cotton, it may shrink a little in drying, but will stretch back out with use.
Caring for the Wood
For long-lasting beauty, simply refinish the wood from time to time to maintain the natural look you love. There’s no need to take the hammock apart—keep everything tied together and work carefully around the rope.
DURAWOOD® Poly Furniture
DURAWOOD® Poly Frame:
• Clorox-type wipes or a soft bristle brush with a mild cleanser such as soap and water solution are ideal for this product.
• A soft bristled toothbrush can be used to clean crevices that are hard to reach.
• Our furniture does not absorb water and requires no painting, staining, or waterproofing.
Deep Cleaning
• For deeper cleaning, a pressure washer can be used on the lightest setting.
• Do not use more than 1,500psi.
• Keep the tip of the pressure washer at least 10-12 inches from the furniture surface so it doesn’t damage the lumber.
Metal Stands
Our stands are powder-coated using Cape Shield® Powder Coating. There should be no need to maintain our stands, but if you do, there’s a rust-resistant paint, such as Rust-Oleum, can help touch up and further protect your stand. For small blemishes, you should be able to match the stand’s color pretty closely to a rust-resistant outdoor paint at your local hardware store.
To completely refinish the stand, lightly sand the metal poles and repaint with your choice of rust-resistant outdoor paint.
Cape Shield® Powder Coating
Superior metal finish and extreme weather protection. Applied through an electrostatic process to ensure complete bonding and heightened rust protection.
Pillows and Cushions
These items are best hand-washed and laid flat to dry. Do not put either item in your washer or dryer as this can result in the fabric fraying, pilling or ripping.
To hand-wash these items we recommend using warm water, mild soap and a soft brush to clean the fabric. You can then rinse it thoroughly and allow the item to air-dry on a flat surface before reusing.
For Furniture Pillows only, please remove the pad inside before you begin cleaning.
If the fabric does however need heavier cleaning, we recommend using Sunbrella® Fabric Cleaner to help penetrate and remove any tough stains.
