Green Speed Networking Event: Guide Erin Fenley

Energy Management Communications Specialist, UC Berkeley

Erin Fenley is the Energy Management Communications Specialist for the University of California, Berkeley. She is currently focusing on the development and implementation of a campus-wide outreach and behavior change campaign around energy conservation. A 2011 graduate of the Design for Sustainability Master of Arts program at Savannah College of Art and Design, Erin studied the ways in which graphic design and communication can facilitate sustainable behaviors and promote new social norms. Her professional career has included experience in graphic design, web design, and art direction in advertising, along with work as an art educator in public schools and non-profit organizations.

Leah Dockstader

Programs Director, Bay Area Green Tours

Leah is the Programs Director for Bay Area Green Tours, where she oversees the implementation of educational tour programs related to sustainability. Leah studied Sustainable Development and Environmental Justice at UC Berkeley, focusing on climate change adaptation and food systems. After graduating, she served as the Outreach and Marketing Manager for the Union City site of California Youth Energy Services. She also travelled with Global Inheritance doing community education on renewable energy, and facilitated events for the Institute of Environmental Entrepreneurship. Leah is interested in supporting empowering solutions to food justice issues as well as facilitating creative discussions amongst change-makers.

Andy Bayowski

Business Developer, kW Engineering

Andy helps kW Engineering grow into new, exciting markets where kW’s expertise in saving dollars, energy, and water in buildings is needed. Prior to joining kW, Andy was a co-founder of the Business Sustainability Network: an invite-only, private peer network of senior executives from 14 industry-leading multinationals focused on deploying energy, water, and waste solutions in facilities, fleets, and products. Prior to BSN, Andy spent 2.5 years living and working in Asia with Platinum Technology Partners: a technology transfer consultancy he co-founded in 2006. Originally from Ohio, Andy studied Engineering & Public Policy and Materials Science & Engineering at Carnegie Mellon.

Charles Bohlig

Supervisor of Water Conservation, East Bay Municipal Utility District Mr. Bohlig has been involved in water and energy efficiency for more than 17 years.

Before joining the East Bay Municipal Utility District, he worked as an Energy Analyst with Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Food Service Technology Center.

Currently, Charles is the Supervisor of Water Conservation for commercial, industrial, and institutional programs. He was the lead on the Water Energy Partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric Company in an Embedded Energy research project for the California Public Utilities Commission. Charles currently finished working on the District’s Water Conservation Master Plan for 2040 in support of the District’s long-term goals for water supply and demand and the Governor’s water reduction goal of 20% reduction by 2020.

John Elliott

Chief Sustainability Officer, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

John Elliott is Chief Sustainability Officer at Berkeley Lab and is responsible for directing and implementing the Lab’s sustainability strategy. He was previously Director, Energy and Sustainability at UC Merced and has previous experience in energy efficiency program design, leading a professional services team implementing energy software solutions for utilities and market operators, working with native American tribes on energy efficiency and renewables, as well as doing groundwater modeling and design of soil and groundwater remediation systems. John draws on the local academic communities of Stanford and the Energy and Resources Group at UC Berkeley, where he received undergraduate and masters degrees.

Chris Jones

Lead Coordinating Researcher, CoolClimate Network

Chris Jones is the lead coordinating researcher at the CoolClimate Network, a research program of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) at UC Berkeley. He also currently serves as co-chair of the Behavior, Energy and Climate Change Conference and is a doctoral student in the Energy and Resources Group. His primary research interests are industrial ecology, with an emphasis on life cycle assessment of products and services, behavioral psychology and environmental policy. Jones is the coordinating researcher for 9 projects at RAEL, including the CoolCalifornia Challenge, a contract to monitor the complete supply chain carbon footprint of Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and a greenhouse gas calculator for residential building construction.

Tim Pine

Environmental Protection Specialist, Office of EH&S at UC Berkeley

Tim Pine is an Environmental Protection Specialist with the UC Berkeley Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S). Tim has more than 20 years experience in the field of environmental protection and regulatory compliance with positions in private sector chemical manufacturing, consulting, public water utilities, and public education. In his current role at EH&S, he is the UC Berkeley Water Quality Program Manager which includes oversight for campus storm water quality, surface water pollution prevention, petroleum fuel storage, and habitat protection/restoration. He is also the Staff Adviser for the student led Strawberry Creek Restoration Program.

Wen Lee

Presenter, Alliance for Climate Education

Wen Lee has years of experience as an environmental educator, from being an outdoor science school naturalist to being a high school science teacher. Today, she is a presenter for the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE), where she visits local high schools and gives assemblies about climate change. In the last year, she has presented to over 27,000 students in the Bay Area. In addition to her work at ACE, Wen is the Director of Online Media and Engagement at the Center for a New American Dream, managing social and digital media campaigns to promote sustainable lifestyles. Wen holds a B.A. in Biology from Occidental College and an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Oregon. Wen loves being outdoors, eating vegan food, playing music, and trying something new at least once a week.

Katherine Walsh

TGIF Coordinator, UC Berkeley

Katherine began working as the TGIF Coordinator in September 2010. Being TGIF Coordinator has given Katherine the opportunity to serve on the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability, the Zero Waste Working Group, the Berkeley Climate Action Coalition, and to represent UC Berkeley on the Campus Green Fund Collaborative. She has a B.A. in Political Science and Environmental Studies from Boston College, where she led the student environmental group, Ecopledge, interned for the Director of Sustainability, was involved in BC’s alternative breaks program, Appalachia Volunteers, and served in the Undergraduate Government. Born and raised in Boston, Katherine is happy to still live in a city near the ocean, which gives her access to urban street trees and bike rides along the shore.

Ronald Amundson

Environmental Science Policy & Management Department Chair, UC Berkeley Dr. Amundson is the Environmental Science Policy & Management Department Chair at UC Berkeley. Ron is a professor and researcher on campus. He studies the role of soils on global elemental cycles, the use of soils in paleoclimate research, and the interaction of biological and abiotic processes on landscapes. At Berkeley, we are interested in the natural capital of landscapes, the record of Earth history they contain, and the utility and value that landscapes hold to all of us in the 21st Century - especially as we try to meet the demand of growing populations for food and prosperity amidst diminishing natural resources of land, energy, and nutrients. It is a very exciting and important time to be an earth scientist.

Eric Magnan

Environmnental Project Manager, US Environmental Protection Agency Eric Magnan is an Environmental Program Manager at the United States Environmental Protection Agency in San Francisco. He is responsible for coordinating U.S. EPA’s oversight of the RCRA Hazardous Waste enforcement, permitting, and cleanup programs in California and Hawaii. Eric has also worked in the Underground Storage Tanks (UST) Program, where he conducted inspections, developed enforcement cases, drafted regulations, managed UST cleanups, and built program capacity with states, tribes, and U.S. Territories. Prior to joining U.S. EPA, Eric worked as a Gas Distribution Engineer at Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Eric received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2003 and he is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of California.
