In fact, your mother is such a religious fanatic that she regularly locks you in a closet to pray. She has also neglected to tell you about the birds and the bees.

These are the events that sets the horror classic, Carrie, in motion. Released 40 years ago, Carrie still is still the queen of horror.

This was the first movie based on a Stephen King book. In fact, this was King’s first published novel, though it was the fourth one he had written. Carrie was based on a composite of two girls he had known – one was a fellow student and the other was a student when he was an English teacher. He initially didn’t like the first few pages he had written and threw them in the trash. Fortunately, his wife Tabitha fished them out and encouraged him to finish the book. It’s a good thing for all of us horror fans that he did. At the time, he was living in a trailer and had his phone disconnected to save on costs. He had to receive a telegram that Carrie had been picked up for publication and the rest is history.

Carrie is also the film that arguably launched Brian De Palma’s career as it was his first commercial success. Some of his later films include Scarface, The Untouchables, Casualties of War and Mission: Impossible. Carrie is also the film that launched De Palma’s first marriage. He met Nancy Allen on the set. They married in 1979 and worked together on the films Dressed to Kill and Blowout. That wasn’t the only marriage Carrie was responsible for. De Palma’s friend, Steven Spielberg would often visit the set. It was there that Spielberg met Amy Irving and they remained a couple until 1989.

10 CREEPIEST PLACES & BEYOND

LA Biergarten is well known for being one of DTLA’s beloved sports bars. Fans and hoolagans alike can cheer on their favorite teams, while enjoying a delicious selection of tapas and over 100 beers on tap.

Yet, few know what lies beneath the ground floor of the Chapman building where the two story brew hall is housed.

Last year, LA Biergarten gave us a sneak peak with the production of NEOTROPOLIS, a futuristic pop up that mashed together BLADE RUNNER, Cosplay, robotic service and some pretty solid drinks.

As part of the interactive futurist tavern, creators offered a tour that led to the underground basement through a hidden spiral staircase. Once inside, visitors became aware of LA Biergarten’s huge hidden cavern underneath. Though parts of the worn concrete and rubble ridden cavern were decorated or dimly lit, its ruins and hidden secrets disappeared into the darkness. What lies beyond the caution tape, to this day remains a mystery.

Another Downtown landmark includes The Biltmore which is known for its influence on the Overlook Hotel in “The Shining”. The most notable figure who has been seen to haunt the hotel’s halls have been the Black Dahlia herself. Beyond the layout and structure of the building, the inspiration comes from comments of an apparition of a boy wandering around the Club lounge while a young ghastly girl who resides on higher levels. Meanwhile, the ghost of a nurse allegedly wanders on the primary levels of the hotel just like the boy.

Speaking of children, the old Bob Baker Theater was renowned for its hauntings as it was for its puppetry. The spirits associated with this theatre were known for being nice and benevolent and easily manipulated. There have also been instances of unexplained production malfunctions and puppets that have gone missing, mysteriously found in hard to reach places of the theater. More abnormally broken cell phones were noted to call members of the cast or crew in the dead of night.

Lincoln Heights Prison

The inspiration and location for films like Wes Craven’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” this prison opened up in 1951 with the intention of any other prison that we have ever seen: punishment not rehabilitation. This venue’s time as a jail has associated it with the iconic “Bloody Christmas”, when six prisoners were taken from their cells, lined up and beat for over 90 minutes by as many as 50 officers. The prison is also known for holding iconic figures Al Capone and Lucile Watson amongst others, notable figures who have been seen to haunt the prison according to films’ cast and crews who have worked on the location over the past 5 decades.

Griffith Park is a popular nighttime attraction known for amazing scenery, great views of the cosmos, and well the curse that permeates through the park. While there is no specific proof to this curse, there has been physical evidence like multiple bodies from the Hillside Strangler. Other strange incidents that have transpired include sightings of Dona Petronilla who allegedly started the curse after cursing her uncle for not leaving the land to her. The uncle she killed, Don Antonio Feliz, has also reported sightings wandering

close to the Old Zoo area of the park.

Pantages Theatre is known for its haunted sightings as early as 1932, just two years after owner Alexander Pantages opened the club. This particular sighting is said to be of a woman who died after falling off the balcony during a performance. The other occurrences are supposedly linked to a robbery that happened at the venue resulting in two new apparitions: original owner Pantages, and the proceeding owner Howard Hughes. Since then some attendees have reported random cold spots and breezes, seeing shadowy figures around, as well as smelling cigarette smoke (when it’s a non-smoking theater).

Beverly Hills is a distinguished neighborhood that is the home to Greystone Manor known for its haunted sightings of men, women, and unidentified figures all around. These hauntings can be attributed to several travesties that have happened on the grounds including murders and suicides which have been the inspiration for films like both of the “Ghostbusters”, “The Witches of Eastwick”, “Dead Ringer”, etc. The original owner One of the most renowned stories comes from the original owner Edward L. Doheny who passed it on to son E.L. “Ned” Doheny, Jr. both who are renowned apparitions in the establishment. More notable is the spirit of the woman with the specific scent of lilac perfume.
