Keep your Spine in Shape Your spine is the backbone of your entire body – literally and figuratively. That means poor spinal health may negatively impact you from head to toe. How can you keep your spine in shape?
EXERCISES (to Do & Not to Do)
NUTRITION ESSENTIALS
Some common exercises help promote spinal health in the form of proper posture while others promote poor posture and put the spine at risk. A strong core supports the spine, whereas a weak core can lead to pain and injury. To build the core, think bent-leg knee raises, stability ball exercises and other exercises that strengthen the core muscles (remembering to keep your spine protected at all times by avoiding rounding the back / neck). On the other hand, avoid exercises / movements that unduly stress the spine: slumping while sitting and bending forward immediately after sitting come to mind, as do exercises that make you prone to rounding your back (traditional sit-ups, toe-touches, etc.). Please seek exercise advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
Believe it or not, certain foods promote a healthy spine (and vice versa). For example, adequate water intake is necessary to nourish not only the body’s cells, but also the spinal intervertebral discs. As you might imagine, water helps keep the discs (and thus the spine) from getting stiff and becoming subject to injury. In addition, an antiinflammatory diet is key to preventing back pain and other spine problems due to inflammation. Think foods such as omega-3 fish and lean proteins, fresh produce, avocado and olive oil while reducing intake of pro-inflammatory foods (most fast foods and processed foods, sugar-laden sweets, etc.).
SLEEP MATTERS Your sleep position and the overall quality of your sleep play a big role in spinal health. The ideal position for the spine during sleep places you on your back with a pillow underneath the knees. As you might imagine, lying on your stomach is the worst position. Your pillow and mattress also matter, so make sure you choose the right ones for you, or your spine will let you know with neck and/or back pain. (Talk to your healthcare professional for suggestions.)
CHIROPRACTIC CARE No conversation about spinal health would be complete without mentioning chiropractic, an entire health care profession founded on the principle that a healthy, properly aligned spine may have far-reaching effects on the entire body. Research asserts chiropractic’s effectiveness in treating back pain, neck pain and various other musculoskeletal conditions, and the goal of chiropractic care is to improve spinal health and help prevent pain from returning. Pumpkin chilli con carne This fright-night feast isn’t just for Halloween – it’s the perfect winter warmer the whole family will love. Serves 4 Preparation time 20 minutes Cooking time 1 hour Ingredients • 1 small pumpkin or butternut squash • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, plus extra to drizzle • Salt and black pepper • 500g beef mince • 1 small onion, peeled and diced • 1 green pepper, deseeded and diced • 1 tbsp tomato purée • 1 x 400g tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed • 1 x 500g carton passata • 1 tsp chilli powder (heat of your choice) • ½ tbsp dark brown soft sugar • 1 tsp yeast extract • 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes • 700g baby potatoes • 1x 300ml tub crème fraîche • 30g watercress, finely chopped For more recipe inspiration, visit www.watercress.co.uk; for more information on the health benefits of watercress, visit www.thewatercresscompany.com.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. 2. Peel and halve the pumpkin (or butternut squash) and scoop out the seeds. Dice half of the pumpkin into 1cm cubes and reserve. Chop the remaining pumpkin into large chunks, place in an oven tray, drizzle with oil and season. Roast in the preheated oven for approximately 25 minutes or until cooked through. 3. Meanwhile, place a large pan on a medium-high heat. Add the oil and heat until beginning to smoke. Add the minced beef and fry until browned. Drain the beef onto some kitchen paper. 4. Turn the heat down to medium. Add the beef back to the pan, then add in the onion, diced pumpkin and green pepper, cooking until the onions are translucent. Stir in the tomato purée and cook for a further minute before adding the kidney beans, passata, chilli powder, sugar, yeast extract and chopped tomatoes. Cover the pan with a tightfitting lid and simmer for 1 hour.

5. Place the potatoes in an oven tray, drizzle with vegetable oil and season. Roast in the oven for 30-40 minutes, or until cooked through and crisp on the outside. 6. Once the roasted pumpkin is cooked, remove from the oven and place into a blender. Add a ladleful of liquid from the chilli and blend until smooth. Add to the simmering pan and stir through. 7. Mix together the crème fraîche and watercress, and season to taste. 8. Divide the potatoes between four bowls. Add a ladleful of chilli and serve with a generous dollop of crème fraîche.

Mobile phone masts in Balgreen There is a plan to put a 20 metre high mobile phone mast on the junction “island” of Balgreen Road and Glendevon Park. This is to improve the 4G and 5G signal in the area. Some neighbours are not pleased. At the time of writing, a planning request has not been made. Craigleith Drive tunnel opens again After many weeks of works and delays, the Craigleith Drive tunnel has re-opened. This was after safety upgrades for those on foot or with wheelers in the shared-use tunnel. There are new speed bumps, automatic signs and better lighting.
Number 13 bus review We met with a team at the City of Edinburgh Council as part of a “review of Supported Bus Services”. In our area that means the Number 13. We asked for your input and passed it on. We said the service was a lifeline in the Ravelston Dykes area, which has few bus services. And
we said it might be even better served by a more routine or re-routed long-distance Lothian Buses service.

Crossings Continental with Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP There’s a new way to request a pedestrian crossing on the City Council’s website https://www.edinburgh. gov.uk/road-safety/request-pedestrian-crossing. Most junctions have “no crossing”. “Uncontrolled crossings”, like raised pavements and islands, cost a lot and are so are not built enough. We think the City should add cheaper, “continental style” crossings (zebra-painted road surface but no lamppost) and put them in more places. Meanwhile, boundary changes and the Holyrood elections gave us a new MSP for much of the Murrayfield Community Council area: Alex Cole-Hamilton. Our Road Safety Group wasted no time in meeting him to seek help in pressing the case. In our area the junction of Murrayfield Road and Ellersly Road would be an example where one would be useful. Mr Cole-Hamilton said he would write to Transport Scotland to ask them to explain any delay to using these crossings and to press the case. Most people have struggled to get a GP appointment, others have found it frustrating to be told to; go online for the service they need, to use their smartphone, to download an app, or to scan a QR code (the small square of black dots) to find out more. If accessing an essential service, like booking a doctor’s appointment, paying a bill or finding out what is in your bank account needs the help of someone else who is more tech savvy, then the system that has been developed to serve the public has failed. Many services which were accessible by making a phone call and speaking to a real person have now been replaced by apps, chatbots and artificial intelligence. For some this is no problem, but for others it is a nightmare. With the closure of bank branches and Post Offices and NHS facilities becoming more and more difficult to access or sometimes requiring online questionnaires to be completed as a first step. In many cases the basic service we should all expect is vanishing in front of our eyes. Even access to public toilets in Edinburgh has reduced to the point where the public have been let down time and time again. The demolition
of the public toilets at Haymarket some years ago was a loss to many. They were not only a convenience but also access to free clean drinking water. The new Haymarket office development was granted planning permission with a condition that the toilets be replaced, yet the offices are open and no toilets have been built. Elsewhere the Council closed public toilets and sold them privately, despite local communities offering to help keep them open.

Dry brush
Silk pillowcase
Dry brushing is a great way to exfoliate and boost skin circulation. Look for a brush with a long handle so you can reach your back. If you’re new to dry brushing, choose a brush with softer bristles.
A silk pillowcase is smoother than cotton, so there’s less friction between the fabric and your skin and hair. That means less frizz and tangling, and fewer skin creases. It also helps to regulate your temperature in summer and winter.
