FIX from CR Smith, Gardeners Street, Dunfermline, KY12 0RN. Registered in Scotland No. SC51530. Ref: COG1126. *Supersedes all other offers. Only valid when presented to technical assessor at point of sale. Minimum order value of £120 after discount applied.
Once selected, each stone is brought to our onsite designer, who creates a design around it. Rather than asking the gemstone to fit a predetermined design, its shape, colour and personality become the inspiration for the finished piece. The result is jewellery that is as individual as the stone itself. Every gemstone presents a different opportunity. Some call for diamonds, some for sculptural settings, and others for almost nothing at all. Our jewellers discover the stone. Our designer interprets it. Our craftsmen bring it to life. The result is a collection of distinctive jewels that could not have existed without the stone at their centre.

Autumn could be looked as a secondary ‘new year’ after all of the high energy of summer, where you could set yourself new goals/projects, or new learning opportunities. Possibly a more cozy routine? I am delighted to continue to offer a service to many local companies and also local groups and charities. Please contact me on the email below if you would like something to be included.
Clarity. Direction. Healing.

Let's talk about what matters to you. 27
THIS IS HOW DENTAL CARE SHOULD FEEL
TREATMENTS AVAILABLE s
Dental care should feel calm, personal and unhurried - an experience where patients feel listened to, reassured and confident that their individual needs come first, with appointments available when they need them. That is exactly what patients can expect when they visit our recently transformed Advanced Dentistry clinic in Corstorphine. Now one of the most comprehensive dental centres in Edinburgh, our St John’s Road clinic has been thoughtfully designed around patient comfort, helping appointments feel less daunting from the moment people arrive. The environment is welcoming and reassuring, with modern facilities that support calm, confident care. But patient-centred care is about much more than surroundings.
Now accepting new private and dental plan patients.

All your dentistry needs under one roof
Preventative care to help avoid problems before they occur
Our team of 25 professionals takes the time to understand each patient, explain their options clearly and help them make informed decisions about their oral health. Prevention is central to this approach, with regular monitoring and proactive care helping patients maintain healthy smiles and address potential issues early, before they become more serious.

All dental needs in one location When more advanced treatment is needed, patients can benefit from an exceptional breadth of skills within the practice, making it easier to receive joined-up care in one familiar location rather than travelling between multiple practices.
Caring for all the family
Good dental care should support every stage of life - from helping children develop healthy habits early on, to maintaining oral health in adulthood, or restoring confidence in later years. Whatever the need, the focus is on helping each patient achieve the outcome that is right for them. Dental membership plans are available from £25.50 per month, giving patients another way to manage the cost of regular care. NHS treatment is also available for children and adults under 26 as part of Advanced Dentistry’s offering.
Whether someone is attending for a routine appointment, considering cosmetic treatment or needs more complex restorative care, the principle remains the same. Every appointment is an opportunity to listen, reassure and provide care that feels right for you.
Because at Advanced Dentistry, every visit matters. 29
Keep your Spine in Shape Your spine is the backbone of your entire body – literally and figuratively. That means poor spinal health may negatively impact you from head to toe. How can you keep your spine in shape?
EXERCISES (to Do & Not to Do)
NUTRITION ESSENTIALS
Some common exercises help promote spinal health in the form of proper posture while others promote poor posture and put the spine at risk. A strong core supports the spine, whereas a weak core can lead to pain and injury. To build the core, think bent-leg knee raises, stability ball exercises and other exercises that strengthen the core muscles (remembering to keep your spine protected at all times by avoiding rounding the back / neck). On the other hand, avoid exercises / movements that unduly stress the spine: slumping while sitting and bending forward immediately after sitting come to mind, as do exercises that make you prone to rounding your back (traditional sit-ups, toe-touches, etc.). Please seek exercise advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
Believe it or not, certain foods promote a healthy spine (and vice versa). For example, adequate water intake is necessary to nourish not only the body’s cells, but also the spinal intervertebral discs. As you might imagine, water helps keep the discs (and thus the spine) from getting stiff and becoming subject to injury. In addition, an antiinflammatory diet is key to preventing back pain and other spine problems due to inflammation. Think foods such as omega-3 fish and lean proteins, fresh produce, avocado and olive oil while reducing intake of pro-inflammatory foods (most fast foods and processed foods, sugar-laden sweets, etc.).
SLEEP MATTERS Your sleep position and the overall quality of your sleep play a big role in spinal health. The ideal position for the spine during sleep places you on your back with a pillow underneath the knees. As you might imagine, lying on your stomach is the worst position. Your pillow and mattress also matter, so make sure you choose the right ones for you, or your spine will let you know with neck and/or back pain. (Talk to your healthcare professional for suggestions.)
CHIROPRACTIC CARE No conversation about spinal health would be complete without mentioning chiropractic, an entire health care profession founded on the principle that a healthy, properly aligned spine may have far-reaching effects on the entire body. Research asserts chiropractic’s effectiveness in treating back pain, neck pain and various other musculoskeletal conditions, and the goal of chiropractic care is to improve spinal health and help prevent pain from returning.
For the ones who did things differently. No two lives are the same, so no two funerals should be either. Whether it’s a traditional service or something completely bespoke, we help you plan a tribute that truly remembers them.

Silk pillowcase
Dry brushing is a great way to exfoliate your skin and boost circulation. It can help to unclog pores and may reduce cellulite and keratosis pilaris (rough little bumps caused by keratin buildup). Look for a brush with a long handle so that you can reach your back. If you’re new to dry brushing, choose a brush with softer bristles and don’t scrub too hard to begin with, to reduce the ouch factor.

Dry brush
Once you’ve slept on a silk pillowcase, you won’t want to go back. Not only does it feel incredibly luxurious, but it’s also smoother than cotton, so there’s less friction between the fabric and your skin and hair. That means less frizz and tangling, and fewer skin creases. It also helps to regulate your temperature, keeping you cooler in summer and warmer in winter. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, then a bamboo or eucalyptus silk pillowcase is a great alternative.

5 beauty aids to try today.
These textured gloves help to unblock pores and remove dead skin cells. You use them after soaking or steaming your skin in the bath or shower for at least ten minutes. If you’re after visible results, you won’t be disappointed – you can literally see the little clumps of dead skin that come off. Totally gross but weirdly satisfying! Follow with a rich body lotion or oil.

Shower filter Do you live in a hard water area? Swap out your shower head for one with a built-in filter. The one by MyHalos is a great choice as it’s approved by dermatologists and easy to fit. As well as softening water, it filters out chlorine, heavy metals and other impurities. Eighty-four per cent of users reported smoother hair, and 86% said their skin felt softer. It’s particularly good for people with eczema, psoriasis or sensitive skin, but most people will notice a difference after using it. 32
Love an at-home facial? Add one of these to your wish list. They use sonic vibrations to deep clean and exfoliate your skin. There are lots on the market to choose from. While some have rotating heads, you may want to stick to one that just vibrates, to avoid pulling at your skin. The OG is the Luna by Foreo. Now on its fourth iteration, it’s designed to remove 99% of dirt, oil and makeup, while reducing puffiness, boosting circulation and firming your skin. There are different Luna devices for balanced, sensitive and combination skin, and you can select different vibration levels and cleansing modes.

Corstorphine
News
by John Barrett former local Member of Parliament and Councillor
In the last edition of the Corstorphine Grapevine I mentioned many things happening in Corstorphine, from the new monthly series of talks organised by the Corstorphine Lit. on the first Monday of each month at 7.45pm in St. Ninian’s Church hall, to events organised by the Corstorphine Trust with all details at www.corstorphinetrust.co.uk/concerts/ to the many things going on in the Corstorphine Community Centre (CCC) in Kirk Loan, which is open Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm. After all that activity many people need to stop for a cuppa and there are now two new places to enjoy in the area. I was recently
in the new Molly’s coffee shop has now opened in The Dower House with excellent home baking and indoor and outside seating when the weather is good. There is also another coffee shop set to open soon in the old railway station at Pinkhill. As well as being home for Molly’s coffee shop the Dower House also has an excellent museum of Corstorphine’s history upstairs, and a room for hire from the Corstorphine Trust. I was delighted to host a charity event there recently and I have arranged another one on 5th December. Tickets are available from the Corstorphine Trust website. The Friends of St. Margarets Park have been doing a great job improving facilities in the park for everyone to enjoy. Corstorphine in Bloom is a community initiative to improve the area. Friends of St Margaret’s Park co-chairman Andy Wallace is part of the steering group for Corstorphine in Bloom, working with Corstorphine and Clermiston Community Council, and other local park groups. The Bowling Green in the park is now being improved by Earth in Common to create a community croft. If you have some spare time to volunteer, both groups welcome more helpers. The West Edinburgh Community Support Group continues to do great work helping those who are finding the cost of living a struggle to cope with. If you can donate anything on their list that is needed, to one of the drop off points, it will go to families in the Corstorphine area who really need some help.

Method 1. Pour 25g of the miso glaze onto each cod loin, spreading it out evenly. Leave to marinate for about 30 minutes or up to 4 hours (or overnight if you can). 2. For the crispy rice salad, mix the cooked rice with the sesame oil and soy sauce, ensuring the grains are well separated. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds and mix through again. 3. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Spread the rice out on a baking tray and cook for 30 minutes, giving it a good stir a few times during cooking.

4. Meanwhile, make the salad dressing by whisking all the ingredients together in a small bowl. Set aside. 5. Once the rice is golden and crispy, remove from the oven and transfer to a large heatproof bowl. Add the chopped cucumber, sugar snaps, coriander and mint, then stir through the dressing. This can be served warm or cold. 6. When ready to cook the cod, roast in the baking tray in the oven for 12-15 minutes. 7. To serve, spoon the crispy rice onto serving plates and serve the miso cod on top or alongside.

What’s the limit?
How can you reduce separation anxiety?
You should only leave a puppy for a couple of hours, whereas the Dogs Trust recommends a maximum of four hours for an adult dog. You might need to come home sooner for an older animal.
Get your dog used to being left on their own. Start by moving a short distance away, then progress to leaving the room. Each time they remain calm, give them a treat. Then try leaving the house, just for a few minutes initially. Gradually increase the time you’re away. Always reward them when you return.
Otherwise, consider doggy day care, a pet sitter or a dog walker. Find one on www.narpsuk.co.uk.

Looking after a dog when you have a job can be a tricky juggling act. They may bark, howl or be destructive if they’re home alone for too long.
If you can’t work from home, coming back during your lunch break can reassure your dog and allow you to let them out or take them for a quick walk. You can ask friends, neighbours or family to do the same.

About a fifth of people have a thyroid disorder, according to the British Thyroid Foundation, with women disproportionately affected. It’s easy to miss the symptoms or mistake them for menopause or stress. So, what does my thyroid do? Sitting just in front of the windpipe, this butterflyshaped gland produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) that regulate your metabolism and influence virtually every cell in your body. What can go wrong? The two main problems are an overactive or an underactive thyroid. They are often caused by autoimmune conditions, where the body attacks its own cells.

The most common thyroid issue is an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, which often runs in families. The thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroxine, which can cause: • Tiredness
• Coldness
• Brain fog
• Weight gain • Dry skin
• Low mood
• Hair loss If your thyroid is underactive, you will need to take tablets, usually levothyroxine, for the rest of your life to counter risks such as heart disease and osteoporosis. And an overactive thyroid? When you have hyperthyroidism, your thyroid generates too much thyroxine. This can cause:

Weird and wonderful
Buttercups are poisonous
By Caroline Knight
October, when gardeners are getting into autumn mode, is actually a busy month. There should be squashes, main crop potatoes, spinach and leeks awaiting harvesting, not to mention autumnfruiting raspberries and orchard fruit, including apples and pears. It’s also a great time for a gentle tidy-up of the garden and for planting spring-flowering bulbs, such as daffodils, tulips, alliums and iris. They’ll then be ready to spring into action with the new growing season.
• There’s a poison garden in the UK. This is at The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland. The Chelsea Physic Garden in London also includes a dedicated area for poisonous plants, sited next to plants that have healing capabilities. • The dandelion was once a highly useful plant. Dandelion roots were cooked as a vegetable and leaves were used in salads. The flowers would be used in wine and the dye could stain wool. Dandelions were once a useful food source
Strange but true That spring will come around is a given, but how many of these weird and wonderful facts about the world of gardening do you know? • Microscopic munching in soil creates the energy that flows between plants. This plays an important role in the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycle which underpins life. Studies suggest that in just one spoonful of soil there could be more life than there are people on planet Earth. It includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea (single-celled microorganisms), and protozoa (single-celled microorganisms with a nucleus), vital for eating dead and decaying plants and animals. • One of the highest-maintenance plants growing in UK gardens is the hybrid tea rose. Roses require pruning twice a year. Repeat-flowering varieties also need to be dead-headed. Diseases including blackspot and mildew are common. But if you opt for more informal shrub or species roses with open, single or semi-double blooms, these are more appropriate for a naturalistic, easy-going style of gardening. • Buttercups are poisonous. They can be fatal to grazing animals, including horses and cattle. All species of Ranunculus contain an oil which can cause severe mouth irritation and stomach upset if eaten. Most animals avoid them. 52
• There are around 200 slugs in an average square metre of garden. • Bananas are the most consumed fruit in the world. However, their security is precarious. While there are more than 1,000 varieties, we regularly eat just one: the Cavendish. These bananas are clones, grown from a slice of another Cavendish plant and not from seed. This means the plants are unable to evolve. The disease Panama wilt has destroyed banana plantations in Asia, Africa and Australia. If it were to spread, we might no longer have bananas to eat.

Behind closed doors
From classic gothic suspense to unsettling contemporary fiction, here’s a selection of spine-chilling haunted-house stories for Halloween.
A Haunted House by Virginia Woolf Highly regarded by critics as a masterpiece of modernist prose, this short story is about a ghostly couple wandering through their former home in search of something hidden. While the living occupants sense them, they are not frightened. As the ghosts move through the rooms, their quest for an elusive treasure reveals a deeper, more mysterious connection to their past.
The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters Home to the Ayres family for over two centuries, lonely Hundreds Hall, once grand, is now in decline, its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, its owners – mother, son and daughter – struggling to keep pace. In a dusty post-war summer, Dr Faraday is called to a patient there. But does the family have a sinister secret to hide?
How To Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix When Louise and Mark’s parents are killed in a car accident, the siblings are devastated but nothing can prepare them for how bad things are about to get. Their one asset? Their childhood home. They have to get it on the market as soon as possible because they need the money. Yet before they died, their parents nailed shut the attic door…
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier Gothic suspense at its finest, this classic novel centres on a shy, unnamed young woman who, on a trip to France, falls in love with and subsequently marries wealthy widower Maxim de Winter. But as they arrive at her husband’s home, Manderley, the young bride is filled with dread – and struggles to escape the haunting memory of his late, glamorous first wife, Rebecca.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson This is a chilling story about the power of fear. A quartet of individuals arrive at the rambling old pile known as Hill House. As they begin to cope with horrifying occurrences beyond their control or understanding, they cannot possibly know what lies ahead. For Hill House is gathering its powers – and soon it will choose one of them to make its own. 57
